Backstory: updated on 10.11.2012 // The League has been corrupted. Gym Leaders, the Elite Four and even the Champion can't be fully trusted. People are oppressed and gender-roles are clearly defined and expected to be followed. Anyone who doesn't follow them are brought in to be jailed or - if the case is serious enough - executed. Pokemon are even assigned to specific male-only, female-only captures. Like the gender-roles, if these are not followed the League will come after you, ready to execute or jail you for disobeying their rules.

Originating behind the scenes in Kanto for seemingly years when the people noticed what was going on it was too late. With no set leader known to the people as to who set the laws in motion people blame the current Kanto Champion for letting this befall them. Johto and Hoenn have fallen while Sinnoh is on its last legs fighting against these ways of thinking and living. Unova is the only region thus far which hasn't fallen. Gym Leaders who were not swayed by these laws had to go into hiding or face punishment and were quickly replaced by others who would either follow of their own volition or out of fear of their lives.

People in Kanto have given up hope. Many follow the laws, keeping their heads down and their noses clean. Every now and again a 'rebel' is heard of, attempting to ignite hope into the people and fight back. They are swiftly put down and publically executed as a warning to the people.

With all this chaos can anyone step up and defy the corruption? With no known leader to the group at the top can there be any victory for freedom?

Region Kanto
Season Autumn
Opposing Team Genesis

Layla dipped her head, being led once again to another 'owner' of sorts. When Genesis had first attacked, she had joined the fight. She had openly rebelled and due to that, she was now being passed from one hand to the next. Those who were not being used as an example or executed worked under members of Genesis, slaves of sorts.

In a short amount of time her once fiery passion to see Genesis' end had been quashed. Her Pokemon had been stolen from her, she'd been beaten and mistreated, her spirits were broken. She no longer protested or rebelled against those around her. She simply wanted a break, a kind hand and no more pain.

Layla knew that there would be no time for kindness anymore however. Not with these ruthless people who preyed on the weak. She was just that.

Now her heart hammered in her chest. She was not to be taken to a normal member of Genesis, rather a leader it seemed. She wondered how this one would treat her, how she would be struck over the smallest of issues.

Everyone else in Genesis seemed to treat other like herself this way. They loved the power, to hold someone's life in their hands.

Her jaw clenched nervously, she let the man leading her about this stronghold push her in the direction they needed to move. She did not lash out at him. She had long learned what would happen if she did.

A faint part of her hoped that this time would be different, that she wouldn't have to go through so much suffering. She attempted to quash that optimism. There was no place for it now.

Lance waited patiently, his hands behind his back. He wasn't so much looking forward to the woman that was to be brought under his 'care.' It seemed that even he did not get a choice in the matter however and he only hoped that the rumors that this 'servant', as Genesis insisted they were, was not as rebellious and outspoken as he had heard.

Rumors were just that, after all.

He glanced out the window, musing. Would this woman end up holding him back?

Lance scoffed at that, shaking his head. That wasn't a thought he quite liked to think about.

His train of thought became fractured as he heard a pair of footsteps growing closer. He glanced towards the open door, turning towards it to get a glimpse of who would step inside.

----[x]----

Blaire scoffed, clenching her jaw. In her arms she held her Axew close to her, wary of what would happen if they got caught. She kept low, crouching with her back pressed up against the wall. She could hear the group of Genesis members seeking her out from around the corner.

It had been an accident. Searching for Benga after splitting up for supplies, she had run into a group of thugs, wanting to pick at her. One had made a grab for her pokeballs and had thus released Bahamut - the Axew in her arms.

Under Genesis' law all Axew were made to be for male trainers only. Females carrying an Axew were punishable under death or slavery.

Carefully she peered around the corner, swallowing the lump in her throat as she realized that the Genesis members - two men with pokeballs in hand - were drawing closer to her hiding spot.

Cursing in her mind she hurried down the alleyway, attempting to find a hiding spot for the time being. Axew glared, attempting to look behind them though Blaire had too tight a grip on him.

Layla was notably nervous when she was pushed into the room. Once upon a time ago she would have snapped at the man for this or at least shot a glare his way. Not anymore and she hated that fact.

She swallowed hard, lifting her gaze. This was not something she expected. She'd heard rumors of those within the league being corrupted in Kanto. Layla had never expected to see the infamous Lance had been one of them.

Layla ducked her head, giving a slight nod. Unless told to speak, she found she was often silent these days. The man beside her scoffed, making quite a display to hit her lightly in the back of her head.

"Well?" He barked, his hand falling back to his side.

"Of course," Layla muttered in response. "My name is Layla Glenn. I've been...assigned to assist you. It's a...pleasure...sir."

The Genesis member beside her snorted a little at the rather slow greeting. He had heard this woman had been quite the rebel. There wasn't much to her now.

"I'll take my leave, sir." He informed Lance before he turned and left the pair, shooting one last glance back at them.

----[x]----

Benga pushed his fiery hair from his eyes, looking about the crowds. He'd been running for quite some time now. Blaire , it seemed, had gone and gotten herself caught off guard by the Genesis members that stuck around the city. He scoffed at that.

Asking around a bit had given him the information he needed. Word spread like wild fire these days. If someone was stupid enough to get themselves caught, everyone seemed to know.

"Stupid girl..." He muttered under his breath.

He and Blaire had been akin to friendly rivals for the longest time. She was strong trainer and could take care of herself. That was if she wasn't being ganged up on. Genesis was full of cowards and would do just that.

What was more if they knew he was actively helping her, they could both be taken in.

Ducking through an alleyway, he attempted to remain unseen. Above, Latias remained cloaking, invisible in the shadows. She was tracking Blaire. Benga did his best to follow without being seen. It was a difficult matter. Genesis members were actively searching now.

There were days, he was finding, when all of this ducking around annoyed him. This was one of those days.

Lance's frown deepened at the woman brought before him. Someone this meek? She would most likely get in his way. This thought alone soured his already dreary mood.

Without a word Lance strode forward, his pace a swift one. The cape he took to wearing trailed behind him. In a matter of just a few steps he was before Layla, his hand finding a place under her chin and tipping her head up so that he could inspect her.

He quickly took note that she was doing all she could to avoid meeting his eyes and he scoffed that.

"You don't exactly live up to that reputation of yours," he goaded, attempting to get some form of a response from the timid woman.

----[x]----

Back pressed up against another wall, thankful that the alleyways were otherwise deserted for the time being Blaire shushed Bahamut. He was squirming in her arms, wanting to fight. Sometimes Blaire had to wonder which one loved to battle more - her or her Pokemon.

"Quiet! They'll hear us!" she hissed lowly.

She shifted, unsure if she should recall Bahamut and make a run for it. Blaire wasn't sure if they had put an APB out on her just yet or not. If that was the case it would be even harder to get out of the city.

Her hand itched towards the other pokeballs at her belt. She didn't want to call anymore unwanted attention on herself for the time being but if she had to she would call out one of her stronger Pokemon to defend herself until she could regroup with Benga.

Blaire shrunk back further down the alley, straining her ears to catch what the two were murmuring. She caught something about using her Pokemon for experiments once she was caught and she visibly bristled at that.

Layla's flinched visibly as he reached out to her. To her surprise however, it was not a motion to strike her.

Her breath caught in her throat. She berated herself for this reaction. This motion, it was different. No one had treated her this way, even in the beginning. Despite the man's annoyance, it was an almost gentle, round about way of inspecting her. She finally met his gaze, at a loss for words.

Swallowing the lump in her throat, she plowed on, "At one point that reputation might have been true," She explained. "After being beaten so many times, I just...gave up...I suppose. That rebellious attitude has only been used as an excuse to continue beating a defenseless woman."

She mulled over what she had said. Fearing that he might take this as an excuse to act negatively upon her, she spoke up again, "that was over stepping my boundaries. I apologize."

Layla wondered how many people had passed these rumors along, that she was rebellious and hard to handle. That was long since behind her. They beat her because they could. It was an excuse, nothing more, nothing less.

----[x]----

Benga ducked around a corner, keeping an eye on the cloaked Latias. She seemed to have located Blaire but she was too close to the Genesis members to approach her unnoticed. They'd have to wait. Too much sunlight was coming through the point she'd stopped at. Latias would not be able to signal to her without losing her invisibility.

Benga shifted a tad closer, motioning to the woman carefully. He ducked around the corner again as one of the members turned his head. This was not a good place to be in. If he managed to catch her attention in the very least, things would be alright.

Bahamut didn't seem like he'd wait around much longer however.

He recalled a time when little things like this wouldn't stop him. After seeing so many die by Genesis' hand, he wasn't risking his friends life much less the lives of his Pokemon. Being reckless was not to tact to take.

"Come on," He muttered under his breath, as if attempting to will the Genesis members to move on. "There's no time for this..."

Latias shot him a look which he ignored. The Genesis members in the city were up in arms already. If they didn't get out now, they would have no subtle way to leave the city without being followed.

Lance sniffed, dropping his hand to his side again. The fight in this woman had died out as it had for many. At least Layla had met his gaze, however brief it had been. That showed promise, perhaps a spark of her former self still thrived, hidden away by her fear.

"A shame. You would have been far more interesting if the rumors had been true."

With that he glanced away, as if listening or perhaps waiting for something. He had no plans for the day but that did not mean that he had to let Layla know that. Really it was time reserved to get to know how this woman ticked.

Lance needed to know if she would be a liability or not. It was no secret her Pokemon had been taken, all of the people in her position suffered that fate.

"Tell me," he began, glancing back at her, "what do you excel at?"

----[x]----

So focused on the enemy drawing closer, searching behind every little thing and inside them, Blaire did not notice the motions to catch her attention for sometime. It was Bahamut that clued her in, drawing still and tugging at her hair. Glancing at him she turned her attention to where Bahamut furiously pointed to.

The sight of Benga ducking around the corner rather comforted her though she wouldn't be telling him that later on. She had worried if he had been on the lookout for her or not.

Glancing around she looked for anything that could be used as a distraction. The only thing near her was a sizable rock. Taking it up in her hand she turned back, waiting for the right moment. Blaire only had one chance.

Blaire felt her heart racing, a determined expression in place. She couldn't mess this up or they'd both pay the price.

It was an agonizing wait and it felt far longer than it really was. Blaire had to wait until both were facing away however when this happened she stood, throwing the rock into alleyway that t'd off into this one. Their heads snapped to the sound of the clattering rock and they took off in that direction.

Blaire waited only a moment, to make sure they would not see her before darting towards Benga, ducking around the corner.

"Fancy meetin' you here," she whispered sarcastically.

Layla swallowed hard, her gaze averted for a moment. As he glanced back at her, she raised her gaze again. It very well seemed he wanted her to be this rebellious person he had heard about. She had no inkling as to why but, she tried to hold a steady gaze for a time.

She was a little unsure of his question. What she excelled in? That had been rather forgotten when her Pokemon were taken from her. Still, she had knowledge hidden away.

Layla shifted her weight from on leg to the other, a hard frown on her lips. "I used to gather intelligence when I had my Pokemon. A little bit of everything," She explained. "However, the most was on old lore and legends. I had tracks several legendary Pokemon throughout the years though, I've only seen a few in my time. Regardless, it's a skill I've notice most lack."

True enough, she had often times run into Genesis members who were attempting to track legendary Pokemon. Most were not very good at the tact, often times scaring the Pokemon away before actually able to disable and capture it.

Given her position, she knew that her knowledge might be exploited. She was not going to fight back, not now. Without her Pokemon, she was next to useless aside from the information she'd given him. If he knew that, she might very well be disposed of.

----[x]----

Began grunted in response as Blaire was finally able to draw closer to his side. It took all he had not to out right yell at her here and now. Something so simple would alert anyone near and all of the effort would be for not.

"You're such an idiot." He scoffed in response. The statement held a bit of bit to his tone but that's all the irritation he managed to push forward for now.

Turning his gaze on Latias, he gave a slight nod. "Scout ahead," he ordered the Pokemon. "Keep in the shadows. If there's a safe path we can take out of here, let us know."

The legendary Pokemon spared a nod toward her trainer before she carefully wove through the alleyways. Benga took to leading the way quietly, occasionally looking back at Blaire. He scowled a little at how calm she seemed to be, her playful expression back on her face for the moment.

"You could have gotten us both killed, you know," he stressed the words. "What made you slip up this time?"

Lance snorted silently at the answer. That wasn't anything that he couldn't already do. With his ability with Pokemon it was no matter to track down anything he needed.

He watched her, taking note that Layla was attempting to keep her gaze even with his though Lance could see her eyes dart away every so often. The fight must have long been beaten out of her.

Placing a hand on her shoulder Lance spun her around, indicating that they would be walking back out the door she had been led through. He didn't much care to be stuck in this bland room for the moment and wanted to stretch his legs a bit.

"Perhaps if you behave I might allow you to have a Pokemon or two back," he goaded further though that idea was still one with much debate behind it. Lance wasn't too sure if her will to fight was directly connected to the beatings she received or because she did not have any Pokemon with her.

In the end he figured he could at least toy with the idea and see what Layla would end up doing in a bid to get at least one of her Pokemon back.

----[x]----

Blaire scoffed at Benga, resisting the urge to swat at him.

"Hey, hey!" she hissed back. "You wouldn't have done much better if a buncha thugs tried ganging up on you! You're as scrawny as I am!"

That last statement was not quite true. While originally Benga had been a scrawny little thing over the years he had grown into his body a little better. He still wasn't much in the muscle department but he wasn't exactly all skin and bone either.

Aggravated shouts could be heard from the other alleys and Blaire had to wonder just how desperate to catch her these Genesis members were.

She braved a quick glance around the corner, spotting nothing. This was good, for the time being. They couldn't exactly afford to get caught when Latias was still looking for a safe path for them to take.

She continued on, Bahamut being still in her arms for the time being.

"Besides, I didn't start it, y'know?"

Layla wasn't sure how she felt about being lead about by this man. This one wasn't like the others, at least not yet. She still flinched under the slight touch, felt very uncomfortable. Yet he'd not moved to strike her. She was already telling herself not to trust this act, that it could change on a dime and that she was still in danger of him.

It had been that way with every one of them, no matter how cruel or 'kind' they acted.

His next words didn't startle her. She had been told that before, several times and it had reigned her in every once in a while. She had been a fool to believe them. This time was no different. It couldn't be.

She inhaled deeply, her gaze fixated ahead of her. She ignored the glances that were shot their way.

"Why should I believe that?" She questioned before she could stop the words.

Layla hated the fact that her Pokemon had been taken. False promises had lead her to believe that she'd never see them again much less the lovely Pokemon they were before. She knew of the experiments they so cruelly thrust upon them as if they were weapons and not living things. That could have very well happened to her own Pokemon as well.

----[x]----

Benga snorted in response, dismissing her words. She was a little overly loud but he didn't move to shush her. There was no point at the moment. For the time, they were in the clear. There was no telling when Genesis could stumble upon them.

Regardless of the explanation she gave, he felt she could have watched herself better. Benga had always been stubborn and a little rambunctious. Even as he grew, this personality stuck with him. If he believed he was right, than he was, in his mind.

Blaire often didn't agree with the mentality, however.

"I don't care who started it," Benga scoffed in response. "If I have to, I'll be the one to finish it!"

Keeping a close watch on things, he grew quiet whenever voices drew too near. They weren't found yet but it was only a matter of time. He'd peek around corners, check how things were before darting ahead again.

Latias had to hurry. He hoped the Pokemon hadn't run into any form of an obstacle along the way. If she was hit by direct sunlight, her cover would be blown. Benga clenched his jaw at that thought. The odds were not in their favor.

He was not surprised at the rebuttal she gave. In fact, he would have wondered if she hadn't responded with that question. Many were naive, however, and fell for false promises at the drop of a hat.

Lance felt that little honesty would not hurt.

"Because without Pokemon you are a liability to me."

They were the cold truth. In this day many people had become as morose as Layla without their Pokemon. It left them at less than their best, demoralized as they were. It made reigning over them for Genesis' mysterious higher ups that much easier.

"You said you gathered information before," Lance carried on, sparing a glance down at the woman. "If that is true than you most likely used your Pokemon for such intelligence gathering. Without them you would be too obvious."

He paused, allowing her to let those words sink in. He had heard about what Pokemon she had had taken from her. It came along with the rumors. With a little digging Lance had been able to at least confirm that much was true.

"So, tell me, did I hit the mark or not?"

----[x]----

Blaire glared at him, a small pout over her lips. She gestured around the corner as she answered him.

"Great. Then go finish it!"

It was perhaps a little crude to say such a thing but Blaire was a little miffed. It hadn't exactly been her fault that the thugs that had released Bahamut from his pokeball had caught her off guard. A smokescreen attack would have caught anyone off guard.

As they drew quiet, the argument dying if only for the fact that they needed to be undetected, they had to take their time. Benga would dart ahead into the next hiding spot before Blaire would have to wait for another opening to hurry after. It made for a frightening experience, when any number of things could go wrong.

Blaire had to wonder when Latias would return to lead them down a safer path, perhaps out of the city. Though Blaire was well aware that if they got that far out the argument might just kick back up before petering out again as both grew aggravated. It was a typical routine.

Layla listened to him plow on, gnawing at the inside of her of her mouth. What information he had on her, he'd obviously looked through. How much did Genesis know at this point? She was left wondering. She hoped she still had some tricks up her sleeves.

Layla stopped that thought immediately, shaking it from her mind. She didn't care for this man but what would fighting back due her? She was alive though in a situation she was not rather pleased with.

"No, you're on the mark," she muttered the response, her gaze narrowing slightly.

She was loath to admit it. From what she could tell so far, Lance was reserved and took care of things in a calm and collected manner. She wondered how long that would last. It never held up, things like this. She doubted everyone she met who affiliated themselves with these people after all.

Layla feel silent after that statement, her mind blank of any thought for a time. She didn't want to recall anything from the past. Thrust into the enemies hands for so long, it was a difficult thing to simply forget.

----[x]----

The argument hadn't lasted long between them. There had been worse, Benga admitted to himself. Much worse. How the two remained friends for so long, it was a wonder. His grandfather had told him that people who bickered about little things cared for each other quite a bit.

Benga had shrugged those words away for a long time. It wasn't until Genesis came about did he realize how true that was.

He stopped, catching a glimpse of Latias ducking around the corner. She motioned to follow. He grinned at the dragon Pokemon.

"She's found a way," he informed though Blaire would have obviously seen this. "Let's go!"

Benga would feel more comfortable long outside the city limits and in a place they could duck down for a short time. They had to regather what they planned on doing next. Genesis was crawling all throughout Kanto as the days grew colder.

There was no telling how easy it would be to find rebels come winter. He and Blaire needed to decide what they were going to do before autumn came to a close and welcomed much colder, snowy days.

"Good," Lance said simply. "Then perhaps we may get along well enough."

He very well knew that Layla would doubt that. Still, it was nice to have a conversation from time to time even if the other party was rather dejected. He supposed he couldn't blame her for that. Anyone in her shoes would be as such.

Really, the only reason he was apart of Genesis was to protect his own assets, his friends. He did not particularly care to see Pokemon injured and hurt - people, however, did not bother him too much. He had his own plans though he could not exact them just yet.

No, that was for a later date.

"Now, if you would stop being so on edge around me that might clear the air a little," he carried on as if nothing was wrong with their meeting. "I do not make it a point to injure my allies."

Whether or not she took this at face value Lance supposed only time could tell. It was a true statement even if she disbelieved it. However long she remained on what accounted as his side then he would not make any motion to injure her.

----[x]----

Blaire felt relief flood through her system, mixed in with the adrenaline there. Now that Latias had found a way for them to follow they just had to pick up their pace and not get caught.

She kept close on Benga's heels as he lead the way after Latias. They didn't stay hidden as long as before as they followed the cloaked dragon Pokemon. She would warn them when danger was ahead, keeping an eye out for the two. Even Bahamut stayed silent, knowing just how dangerous it was to be caught.

Having to resort to back alleys the entire way it made for a longer travel then either would have liked. Anywhere with direct sunlight filtering through were areas they avoided, due to Latias having to remain hidden. Because of these stipulations it took them anywhere from half an hour, maybe longer, until they managed their way out of the city.

It was only here that Blaire called Bahamut back to his pokeball, placing it on her belt again. She glanced at Benga, wondering what was on his mind for the moment as they made their way to better cover.

Had he been worried? She shook that thought from her mind almost as soon as it came.

In a bid to ignore the autumn chill, her shorts and top not exactly fit for this weather, she spoke up.

"Any plans, wild one?" As she spoke she rubbed at her arm where a bruise was forming. The thug that had grabbed at her had had a tight grip.

Layla glanced at him though it wasn't something of a long gaze. She turned her gaze away, her heart picking up pace with the thought. He wouldn't hurt her? Was that really a true statement? She'd heard these words before and she had lost trust in many of the people inside of Genesis.

She couldn't let herself believe. Not after so many months of nearly being beaten to death.

Layla knew he was different however. Something was genuine about his words. She swallowed, trying to push that thought away. Until proven otherwise, she wouldn't believe him.

"You shouldn't say things like that," she muttered in return. "I might believe you..."

Lyala couldn't fall for false hopes. Not again. She had been crushed under those hopes and she was broken by them. She didn't want to feel that pain again.

----[x]----

Benga released a held breath when they were outside the city. He patted Latias, thanking the Pokemon for her work. He called her back to her Pokeball afterward, his gaze turning toward Blaire for a brief moment. He scoffed a little at the nickname she'd been calling them since they were kids.

Benga took a moment to really watch her. She was cold, that was about normal. She was always cold. The bruise that was settling on her arm made him scowl however.

He attempted to reign in his annoyance toward the entire situation. Ruffling his own hair, he closed his eyes for a moment, mulling over her question. There was still a lot to be done. They knew where the rebel base was, his grand father residing there currently. Benga and Blaire often took off however, on their own missions.

This one had only been to check out where some people were being transferred and used as 'assistance' to Genesis members to put it in the lightest of terms.

"We still have to find those people," He scoffed a moment later. "Without getting caught...again."

He shook his head at the little form of berating her. At times, he couldn't let these things go despite his best efforts. His friend could have very well been killed or forced into slavery. He wouldn't have felt right knowing that he could stop it.

Lance didn't speak as Layla absorbed those words. He didn't feel any need to push the idea forward. It would be counter intuitive to what he intended. Besides, he didn't say those things to spare her feelings. He needed her to be useful and not hold him back.

When she did answer back after several moments had passed Lance mulled over his words carefully. That kind of a statement was a curious one. Perhaps she was already putting hope in it.

"Believe what you want," Lance said. "No one can tell you otherwise."

It was a true enough statement. While many a people kept their noses clean and followed Genesis' rules that did not mean that they believed in such things. It was the same for any given scenario. One just had to realize that.

----[x]----

Blaire glared at Benga in response. Of course he wouldn't let it go. Not yet. The accusation was still there. Did he really think she had set out to get caught?

"It's not my fault society has made a reputation out of girls being 'easy targets', y'know?"

With that she scoffed and turned away to find a suitable place for camp. It wasn't like they could head back right away, not when they would still be out for her blood.

Her aggravation, despite the respite between the argument and now, only had increased. It wasn't like she didn't know she had to be careful, Blaire had been. But with society as it was women were often targeted as being 'easy prey.' As a woman with Genesis' rules in place it made it harder for her to get around. She didn't need Benga adding to it.

Blaire was quiet now, her aggravation so high that she had past the want to argue or yell at Benga.

Layla mulled over the words. It was the only thing distracted her now. This one was different and whether it was because his status or something more, she didn't know. He seemed he wanted her to fight but for what reasons? Most she had 'assisted' over time had simply used her as a 'play thing' of sorts. She wasn't a person, she was a thing to be owned.

What made it so different with him? Why did he insist she not be a liability? What did he expect from her?

These and many other questions whirled through her mind. She hardly paid much attention to those who looked on. There were some who knew her, heard the rumors. Others who had not would be informed. Layla worried about these people. She knew if she was caught without this man, any one of them could use it as an excuse to 'punish' her.

These worries assailed her constantly. Who would take up the excuse to come into her room and beat her? Would she even be assigned a place to sleep in the first place? How many others suffered the same here?

The questions seemed never ending.

Gnawing at her lip, she drew her attention away from these people. "You're very strange." she stated simply after quite some time of silence.

She wasn't used to this. In a time, she had expected to be outright beaten or berated for the smallest things. She wasn't prepared for this and was at a loss as to how to react or what to think.

----[x]----

Benga ran a hand through his fiery hair as Blaire stormed off. Some days, he forgot that it was harder on women to be wandering about. They had no leeway unless they were to dress accordingly. Blaire had always been a tomboy though, she was as soft as a marshmallow. That didn't mean she had to show it most days.

He felt a little bad for his berating. It wasn't like she could just change herself to fool anyone. Genesis had an eye on them after all. They had for quite some time after taking out one of their smaller strongholds.

Benga puffed out another sigh before following her. She was shutting him out. This was normal behavior from the woman. If she was angry at someone, she simply stopped talking. The whole method was annoying. If he did or said something wrong, there were times he couldn't quite pinpoint it and make up for it later.

This time, he knew he had simply put his foot in his mouth.

As the two began moving through thick woods, Benga found himself growing annoyed over the silence. If anything, he felt a little awkward for blaming her anyways. They both knew the dangers. It wasn't her fault.

Rubbing the back of his neck, he shook his head a little. "Look...uh," Benga was never good at apologizes. He always felt rather awkward giving them, knowing that he'd hurt another. "I'm sorry...Blaire. I shouldn't be blaming you."

Benga coughed into his fist afterward before his hand fell back to his side. Would she accept it? With Blaire, there was no telling.

"Perhaps," Lance relented before drawing quiet.

He drew quiet then, brooding. He had spotted Layla glancing about, possibly even biting at her lip as she took note to the looks she was receiving. Lance would be lying if he said that some of the looks were rather devious or cruel in nature.

It was a problem that would have to be dealt with. If he wanted to boost Layla's confidence, perhaps gain another ally for his own agendas. Lance didn't rather enjoy seeing Pokemon in captivity to worthless trainers and nearly all of Genesis fell under that bill in his eyes.

Would Layla fall under that category as well? Or would she be one of the few Lance deemed deserving of her Pokemon? He couldn't possibly tell until he saw her with her own Pokemon.

But first things first....

"Tell me, what kind of torment have you suffered through," he said. Lance did not give Layla a chance to argue back to any genuine meaning before he plowed on. "I cannot prevent mistreatment from the others if I do not know what to expect."

----[x]----

Time seemed to pass on by agonizingly slow. Blaire couldn't be sure how much time passed as she searched out a spot to rest out of the way of any wayward travelers or Genesis members. She was very well aware of Benga following her and she found it a little hard to ignore the aggravated thoughts running through her mind.

Blaire paused a moment as Benga spoke up, sounding awkward. He was never very good at saying sorry. Still, at least he extended the effort.

It was quiet for a moment as Blaire climbed over a rotted out log carefully. She didn't want to agitate anything that might be making it its home. It was only after this that she spoke up, if sounding a little miffed.

"It's fine."

Despite the apology it would be a little while before Blaire would stop sounding so put off. While she had a hard time holding a grudge she could be angry for quite a bit before the anger cooled over. At least now it was dulled and could be less focused on for the time.

"Let's just find somewhere to camp out."

Layla jerked a little when Lance spoke up again. She hadn't expected it. Between beatings and staying alive, she rarely was every spoken to as an equal. He was actively attempting to prevent her from being harmed. Her heart once again stirred in reaction, beating quickly though she had no inkling as to why. Was she simply nervous over this fact, fully aware that he could easily go back on his word?

She chalked it up to such, attempting to calm herself.

Her gaze falling ahead of them, she ducked her head a little. She hated thinking about it but if this was going to really help her, she figured it might be best to speak up. She gnawed at the inside of her lip, feeling ill at the displeasing memories.

Finally, she gave a shrug of her shoulder. "It was mostly just the beatings," she explained. "Given any form of excuse, they'd attack me. Sometimes they'd have their friends join in as well. Most of these people, they like to show they've some form of power over you..."

It was for that exact reason she was unsure of Lance. He was actively trying to prevent this from happening. It was rather obvious he was higher up, a lengthy bit higher than the members that she had been passed around to. Most would have exploited this. Why wasn't he?

"Some used weapons," she plowed on. "Whether it was for a threat or actively used depended on the person wielding it..."

There were scars though, they remained covered. She was never comfortable allowing them to be shown. The ones on her arms were covered by her long coat.

Layla wasn't sure if this information was helping him. It was rather obvious at this point what had happened. It had been every person she'd been passed to over time. It was a living nightmare. Part of her, a small part that she allowed, hoped that Lance was true to his words. That he wouldn't hurt her.

----[x]----

Benga knew it would take time for it. It always did. until she cooled down, there wasn't going to be much talking between them. What they needed to worry about now was finding a place to rest and keeping an eye out. With the lack of foliage, it was harder to keep themselves hidden.

He listened carefully, watching for any sign of trouble. Blaire had been spotted so Genesis would assume he was with her. They would be scouting the area's if they had to, just to flush them out.

Benga couldn't let that happen. They needed to save the people who were slaves to Genesis now. If they didn't do it, who would? Numbers were growing smaller because of fear. Fear left most wanting to protect themselves rather than stick their necks out for others.

He scowled at that thought. In such a short time, it seemed people's morals had been completely forgotten.

His gaze raised, watching Blaire for a moment. She seemed to be cooling down as she looked for place to hide for the night. While it remained quiet it wasn't so much uncomfortable. Night was drawing on them and soon the forest would be plunged into darkness. They'd have to find a place quickly.

"We should keep an eye out for caves," he finally noted out loud. "They'll keep us covered for the night. If anything else, we'll be lucky to find any kind of 'house' or shack out this far..."

He spoke mostly to attempt to break the silence. Benga knew how cold Blaire would get, even during the day. If they were forced out into most of the night air, she'd freeze and most likely get very little rest. He wanted to at least attempt to prevent that.

Layla seemed to take her time in answering him however when she spoke up he listened intently, already deciding how to go about it. He could still see the occasional nasty look sent her way, some of them with a leery feel to them.

Power had a funny way of messing with a person's mind. Much of Genesis' forces had been corrupted by this power and they exploited it, especially on people like Layla who could not put up a fight anymore.

To Lance the solution was a simple one for the moment. His hand slipped to his belt, producing a pokeball from its hiding spot.

"If that is the case then you'd best make friends," he said before releasing the Pokemon within.

A Dragonair quickly took up pace alongside them, watching Layla carefully. Her scales were sleek, gleaming in what light that fell over her lithe body. Lance would make sure that Dragonair would follow Layla wherever she went in cases where he had to separate himself from her side.

----[x]----

The silence between the two made it seem like much more time had passed then it really had. Only the occasional call of a wild Pokemon or a breeze rustling the dying leaves broke it. Sometimes Blaire could spy a Pokemon peering at them cautiously before it bounded off for safety.

Blaire kept her eyes peeled, looking for a suitable spot for camp. If they didn't find one they might very well have to make due out in the open as they were as the sun was beginning to set. She frowned at that.

Out in the open meant that they would not be able to risk a camp fire of any kind. She had a hard enough time staying warm these days as it stood.

Benga's voice drew her out of those thoughts and she spared a glance at him, watching him for a moment before turning away.

"I'm aware," she noted lowly. She wondered if he was just trying to keep the quiet between them at bay for the time being. They had been traveling together for quite some time and Blaire knew the routine.

She gestured towards a larger hill, trees sparse over its form though the area around it were thick with trees. "If there's one nearby that would be the best bet."

Layla was surprised that he'd release one of his own Pokemon. She gazed at the Dragonair, a little awestruck by how pretty she was. There were rather rare chances to see this kind of Pokemon. It wasn't often they were seen, especially where she had come from.

She reached out, running her fingertips over the Dragonair's side. She didn't want to over step any boundaries and considered the Pokemon's feelings. If she was unwanted, Layla would not over step her comforts.

"She's beautiful," she commented, turning her gaze away from the Dragonair for a moment.

The statement was a tad odd for her to confess. It wasn't like she'd have made friends with any of the people who had hurt her. It was rare that they ever called upon their Pokemon themselves unless they really needed to.

With the Dragonair acting akin to a shield, she noticed that those leers sent her way dropped rather quickly. Some, she knew, were braver than others. Still, it was a comfort and she relaxed a little. She was aware of the Dragonair's gaze on her and offered a kind smile.

For once since being thrown into Genesis' hands, she found herself feeling a little more at ease. How long would that last however? She feared finding out.

She grew a little awkward, her gaze far from Lance's own. "Thank you..." She muttered.

This act of kindness, it wasn't something she was used to anymore. She'd nearly forgotten what it was like. Even if he was simply using her as an asset, the least she could do was express some form of gratitude.

----[x]----

Benga snorted at the response. She seemed to still be attempting to cool off or was simply in no mood to talk. He was beginning to find he didn't much mind it. Silence served them best at times.

As she pointed out the location, he sighed a little. The sooner they got there, the better. The both of them were exhausted, he knew that. It had been a long day and they didn't spare much time for rest. With the mission, they would need what energy they had.

Most of the trek was in silence, neither seeming to want to break it. Some evenings were like this. If any other person would have been there, they probably would have thought this awkward or strained. Despite his attitude at times, Benga did seek out a quiet atmosphere. It gave time to clear his head.

When they came to the area, he gusted out a sigh of relief. There, hidden by dead foliage and leaves was a cave. The thick trees around them would keep cover. They simply had to make sure nothing was already living in it.

"Well, looks like you're eyes have paid off," he jested. He spared her a smile before pushing his way carefully inside.

It was quiet here, no sign of life. Most Pokemon had fled areas such at this, in fear of Genesis. There were very few people on the rebels side and some would not think of taking up nights in caves or abandon homes.

Silently, he motioned for Blaire to follow. It seemed safe enough for the moment. Only time would tell however. If there was something that could be disturbed here, it hadn't shown itself.

Benga hoped there would be nothing to worry about here. Experience told him to be cautious however.

Their pace slowed as Layla took to watching Dragonair, reaching out to touch the Pokemon's scales. Dragonair shifted back a little, her head tilting to one side as she observed Layla. She cooed soon after, her tail flickering behind her.

Lance scoffed, a sound more of amusement than agitation this time around. Layla was dropping her guard quite quickly. Lance had been expecting this to happen in weeks not minutes. Still, he would not call it into question. Something like that might only make her draw back into it again.

"Do not thank me," he answered simply, "Just make sure to report any mishaps to me."

While her guard was lowering he could not expect full honesty right away. He would treat this carefully has he had originally set out to do, even if Layla was more at ease than he had expected.

Dragonair pushed her snout towards Layla's face, sniffing at her and observing the woman more closely.

----[x]----

It seemed that the area was farther head than it appeared. Thick bramble bushes or felled trees made it difficult to get to the area in a timely manner. Due to this the sun had almost entirely sunk below the horizon by the time they reached the area of a well-hidden cave.

"That's because I'm super awesome like that," she called back.

Arms crossed over her chest, Blaire crouched down, waiting for Benga to give the verdict. It was a normal routine. She sometimes wondered why Benga always went first but didn't question it. She didn't much want to get into an argument over something so petty.

When Benga pushed his way back through the dried foliage hiding the cave mouth from view and gestured for her to follow, Blaire took a moment to reach for a pokeball. An Arcanine was released soon after, shaking his thick coat of fur before looking expectantly at the two.

Silently Blaire tapped her nose and then gestured to the cave. It was a precaution to make sure anything inside did not come charging out over their voices. With Arcanine, he would sniff around for newer scents.

He lumbered on inside, pushing past Benga easily. It took the large canine Pokemon a few moments before he gave his own verdict, a quick series of low barks.

"Kujo says there's some Zubat deeper in but if we don't bother them we should be fine," Blaire answered. No doubt after awhile they might even fly over their heads and out of the cave.

Layla gave a slight nod in response. She'd keep it in mind. There was still a lack of trust for Lance but she very well knew she was letting her guard down. She hadn't always been so rough around the edges. She had liked to get to know people.

It seemed part of that was shining through.

Layla jerked a little as Dragonair pushed her snout into her face. She hadn't expected it. The Pokemon seemed rather curious of her, just as Layla was rather curious of the Dragonair. Being as she had specialized in ice and ghost types, she hadn't really given much thought of too many others aside from her own.

She reached out gently, stroking the Pokemon. Layla found she was always a little more comfortable around these creatures than people. While they could still be dangerous, more times than not as long as one was friendly, they would be the same back.

Layla needed that kind of comfort. It made her miss her own terribly. Her smile slipped from her face once again.

"Where will I be staying for the night?" she inquired a few beats afterward.

Night had drawn on them rather quickly. She still had no inkling what to expect further from Lance, just that his acts of kindness might have very well been for his own gain.

----[x]----

Benga was a little relieved at the news. With the cave mouth practically covered, it very well seemed this would be a completely safe place to hide out for the night. He had to wonder about their luck. For once, everything seemed to be falling into their favor.

He reached out, patting Kujo's side. The large Pokemon, he knew, would most likely serve as a cushion for Blaire. She needed the warmth, especially with how winter was drawing near. It wasn't like they had a warm bed to retreat to for the moment.

"We've lucked out than." He stated, shooting a smile at the woman.

Benga was rather pleased, knowing this. It was rare that they found places like this without some form of problem. It didn't mean they were completely in the clear yet.

Pushing his fiery hair from his face, he scoffed at the thought. "Hope all of this is worth it," He stated absentmindedly. "Rather not get persuade by someone higher up..."

There was always a chance. They both had heard 'horror stories', of sorts, especially regarding some from the previous Elite Four. They were a merciless bunch, it seemed.

Lance clasped his hands behind his back, watching the display before him. Dragonair was curious, always poking about for something new when she was not in battle. No doubt Dragonair wanted to know more about this woman before them.

Layla seemed just as fascinated, almost awe-struck by his Pokemon. Lance couldn't help but feel a little pride well up in his chest at this observation.

He turned, gesturing for Layla to follow when she questioned him as to her sleeping quarters. They would have to trek down the long hallways and a flight of stairs to reach it. Her room would be near his this way he could keep easier tabs on her through the night though he doubted she would be stupid enough to slip out and sneak around.

Dragonair shoved her snout into Layla's back, pushing her forward a few steps to get her going. A cooing sound left the dragon as she did this.

"If you'll be quick it won't take long to reach your room," Lance called over his shoulder.

----[x]----

At the attention he received from Benga, Kujo's tail twitched a little even as Blaire pushed her way inside as well. She looked relieved, not wanting to go out and about in the darkness for a better hiding spot. That could end badly for them if they were caught and separated in the middle of the night.

She moved towards Kujo, wrapping her arms around his large neck and resting her chin on his back, looking at Benga. He hadn't always been this full of worry or even this serious. Since Genesis had taken control it had been a notable shift in his personality.

"Well, since we've lucked out tonight then tomorrow will probably be a giant mess," she answered slowly.

It seemed to be how their luck went. Something good would happen for them and then their luck would twist and things would go to hell in a hand basket before they knew what was happening.

Blaire began bobbing her legs as best she could while standing, attempting to keep the blood pumping in them and thus keep her a little warmer. It wasn't working as well as she had hoped and her frown deepened.

"A fire will be foolish, huh?" she spoke, a little dejectedly. The light would no doubt shine through the deadened leaves and anything that they could find in the dark for kindling would smoke too much and lead anyone to their area in the morning if it was kept tended to all night.

"I don't get how you always seem to stay warm."

Layla was quick to pick up her pace as Dragonair pushed her snout into her back this time. She didn't want to keep either of them waiting. She reacted upon this more on caution than the Pokemon attempting to move her.

If she had not done what she was asked, she would have been beaten for something so simple.

Layla attempted to keep pace with him. Her body complained a little. Long before Lance, she'd taken more abuse and paid for it. Her body was still healing but it had left her rather sore despite this fact. Somewhat of a slow pace hadn't bothered her.

"You'll...you'll tell me if I'm not doing something right, right?" she inquired a moment afterward.

Layla was still rather paranoid. Even if he had been taking means to keep her safe or be kind to her in a way, she still couldn't bring herself to put her trust in the man. While she attempted to keep herself relaxed around him, the question was for more precaution sake.

As the Dragonair took to her side again, she reached out, stroking the Pokemon's scales again. She tried to keep pace with Lance as her hand fell back to her side.

----[x]----

Benga patted Kujo's side again, motioning toward Blaire. She was already cold. The large dog Pokemon would need to keep her warm tonight. There was no telling how low the temperature would dip.

"We can't be optimistic, can we?" he jested, grinning.

They both knew it was a truth they couldn't escape. When good things happened, something bad always followed. It seemed it had it's way of balancing out. As long as they were alive, Benga chalked that up to the best thing they could manage in any given situation.

He blinked at her, laughing a little. "And I don't know how you can always be so cold!" He shot back.

For as long as he could remember, Blaire had always had trouble keeping warm. She often looked pitiful during the long winters. It must have been something hard to deal with. Benga couldn't imagine what it would be like.

"Don't worry about it," he waved a hand dismissively. "You've got a fluffy pillow to keep you warm."

He pointed toward Kujo to confirm this statement. At least she had fire type Pokemon. He figured her constant lack of warmth might have been one of the reasons why she started training them.

Lance shot Layla a look, gauging what she might be feeling through her expression. It seemed she was far more broken down than he had first thought. The way she had asked that had been rather pitiful.

He waved his hand dismissively at the question. Dragonair cooed again as Layla took to petting her side.

"Do not think me like those others you've been passed off to," he berated, a little miffed at this. "It is rather insulting."

He had his honor and his own morals, after all. He wasn't power hungry and abusive. Lance felt as if his feathers were a little ruffled at just the very thought that he might be.

Lance spared her another quick glance, noting that she often fell behind a few paces only to quicken her step briefly in an attempt to stay at his side. Snorting quietly he slowed his pace a small fraction.

----[x]----

"I prefer being realistic, all things considered," Blaire shot back lightly.

She took a moment to tighten her hold on Kujo for a brief second. He loyally stayed near her, helping her to stay warm. As days grew colder this grew to be more common. It had been like this ever since he had been caught as a Growlithe, long before they had met Benga.

Blaire sniffed, lifting her head to glare lightly at Benga's jest.

"Hey, cold hands, warm heart and all that," she defended.

At the mention Kujo released a low bark. Though quiet for the large Pokemon, it was a deep sound. It was the kind of sound that seemed to vibrate in one's bones.

Blaire reached up to scratch behind Kujo's ears, a pleased look crossing his face. This was a way to distract herself from the disappointment that she felt at Benga's response. She didn't much care to think why she felt disappointed nor did she want to take notice into how much she felt it lately.

"He's my big, ol' fluffy buddy," she answered, smiling at Kujo.

Layla ducked her head a little. She hadn't meant to insult him. Her own precautions, what she was used to and what to expect, these instincts propelled her to ask. He'd told her that he wouldn't hurt her. His dismissive attitude on the issue only confirmed that.

Layla wanted to trust him but she couldn't bring herself to open up.

"I'm sorry," she apologized afterward.

She swallowed hard, trying to calm her pounding heart. This was not so much something she was used to. It wasn't fear or nervousness. Was it disappointment?

Layla grew a little agitated with herself. How could she not tell what she was feeling anymore? For months the only thing she had felt was fear and anger and remorse. Had she forgotten these other emotions, buried so deeply in everything else?

That unsettled her quite a bit and she grew silent because of it. Why would she feel disappointed in herself over such a small statement as it was?

She found she didn't have an answer.

----[x]----

Benga snorted in response but smiled none the less. It appeared that she was at least relaxing a little now. As relaxed as they could manage in this given situation that was. It wasn't like they dropped their guard completely.

Her expression dropped, he could see that in the darkness. He briefly wondered why but pushed the thought away for a moment. He couldn't focus on that now. She needed to rest in the very least.

"I'll take up first watch," He offered, glancing at his friend. "You just need to focus on keeping warm tonight."

He scoffed a little at this. "Maybe we need to snag you some better clothes for the winter. You're gonna freeze out in all of this."

Benga worried for her health though he wouldn't admit it out loud. She'd always tried to find warm places even when they were kids. He had to wonder how that might effect her health in the long run. Would she get sick easier, especially given the times?

Benga found he worried about this fact far more than he would care to.
