Lance frowned, taking note of the way she kept distance between them, Dragonair at her side again. She seemed to take too much to heart, taking his simple actions and reading too far into them. He shook his head, attempting to ignore this as he lead them to the nearest elevator.

His pace was slow, even. He didn't want her wounds aggravated further from a quick walk even if she was on medication for the pain at the time being.

Inside the elevator this distance began to aggravate him. Layla was taking great pains to keep several feet between them, perhaps believing that she was being rebuked by a crush or some sort. He shook his head as the elevator dinged, the doors sliding open and allowing them out.

It was at this final stretch did Lance reach out, taking her shoulder in his hand and steering her closer to his side.

"You're a handful, you know that?" he snapped, though it was softer than before. He'd have to watch himself around her for things like this. In his mind it was a little ridiculous, having to walk around on eggshells.

Whether or not she was effected by this Lance didn't stop to find out. At the door, back in place and with a couple of locks on the inside for Layla's peace of mind, he nodded to her.

"I'll see to it that you have your Pokemon first thing in the morning," he promised, allowing his hand to fall away. With that he strode off. He'd wait for her Pokemon to arrive by the transfer system as she slept.

Dragonair cooed, nudging Layla gently inside.

Layla had been rather surprised as he had steered her closer to him. She wasn't sure what to make of him. One moment he seemed more emotionally crippled to her thoughts, the next he made moves to make up for it. It all left her rather confused.

She had figured most of it was her fault. She was easily hurt by others and it only worsened over the time Genesis was in rule. She'd grown overly cautious with people and backed off when she felt she was not getting a good response from them.

Pulling herself from this train of thought was a difficult feat.

She watched him strode off after that. Dragonair was quick to nudge her in the room. Layla did as such, closing the door behind her. She eyed the locks added, wondering if perhaps it was a little much. Regardless, she shut herself in, turning what extra lock as there.

Layla didn't like the thought of being locked in her room. It was a tad depressing in her view. She'd been such a heap of emotions however, mentioning depression toward herself, she found was a little ironic.

She patted Dragonair, moving toward the bed. Layla knew that she wouldn't get much sleep throughout the night. Whatever she would was simply the drug putting into a deep doze.

She wasted no time in laying on the bed once again. She pulled the blanket over her, staring out into the darkness for quite some time before she closed her eyes. It took a long time before she drifted off. When she did, it was a light sleep, waking up on and off throughout the rest of the night.

As long as no nightmares assailed her, she figured sleep was sleep and some was better than none at all.

It was early in the morning, the sun just rising and turning the sky into a myriad of colors as the seconds ticked on by. It was a slow process though Lance spared no time in watching the sun climb higher into the sky.

In his hand he held Layla's pokeball, a healthy Weavile inside. He had had to see to it himself that Weavile was healthy. Lance was happy to see that his skill in healthy Pokemon was not needed. Whether or not the scientists had decided it was unfit for experiments was beyond Lance's scope of knowledge.

He stopped before Layla's door, rapping his fist against the thick door a couple of times. If he received no response for a few minutes he would knock again.

Lance wondered if the extra locks had put Layla at ease or not. They might have been extraneous but Lance felt they could not risk the locks being picked at. He also wondered if Dragonair had taken to sleeping in Layla's bed or had given her space as well. The Pokemon tried to be courteous of other's needs when she could.

----[x]----

It took quite some time for Blaire to rouse out of sleep. She was comfortably warm and she didn't quite want to get up because of it. The warmth relaxed her, put her mind at ease, even when the chilly morning air tried to sap it away again.

Several minutes passed before Blaire was able to recall the events of last night. They had been innocent things but the recollection of Benga reaching out and drawing her closer to his side caused her heart to hammer in her chest and for her face to heat up further.

Prying her eyes open she was met with Benga's chest, the necklace of Pokeballs at his neck obscuring a great portion of what might lay on the other side of him. Her own hand had fisted into his shirt at some point in the night as well.

Blaire swallowed, attempting to figure out the best way to untangle herself from Benga. Was he even awake yet? She couldn't be sure without stealing a glance up at his face.

She shuffled a little, unsure about that course of action.

Layla wasn't sure what time it was when she was roused from her sleep. She had heard the knocking and lifted her head, pushing her hair from her face. It took her a moment to push herself up. Figuring it might have been Lance, she attempted to get up and move toward the door.

In the attempt, she didn't take note of the blanket rather wrapped around her. With Dragonair's body curled up on the blanket, as Layla attempted to move toward the door, her leg snagged lightly in the blanket. She tried to catch herself before she hit the floor with a rather loud thump.

Layla laid sprawled out for a moment, hand covering her eyes and laughed. Really laughed, something she hadn't done in such a long time. It made her feel lighter, despite it being at her own expense.

She wondered what Lance was thinking as she heard his knuckles rapping against the door again. She untangled herself from the mess of blankets, glad that the pain killer seemed to still be warding off any pain.

Layla finally unlocked the door, opening it. She cleared her throat, still trying to calm herself down.

"I fell..." She informed, watching Lance before ducking her head slightly, her cheeks warmed with embarrassment, though, the joy from the event still lingered. "I just..fell...that's all."

----[x]----

Benga awoke feeling something pressed against him. It wasn't so normal for him. If his Pokemon did sleep with him over night, they wouldn't have been laying on him as such. He blinked his eyes open, protesting slightly at the morning light.

Pushing himself up, he caught gaze of Blaire wrapped around him. She seemed just as startled.

His face immediately warmed, his cheeks inflamed. He cleared his throat, averting his gaze awkwardly. Benga forgot that in the time he knew her, she had always been one to cuddle in her sleep. Especially when something someone was warm.

"Well...good morning to you too." He tried to jest, to smooth things over a bit.

Neither he nor Blaire seemed to know how to react in the given situation. This feeling was unfamiliar to him and no doubt her as well. They were inexperienced. They didn't know what this was.

Benga waited until she pulled herself from him, if she wanted to at all. Both were feeling rather awkward. He hoped that he would not hurt her in some way if she did pull away. Blaire made her needs known, most of the time, and if she did not untangle herself from him, he knew they would remain here for a time.

Lance waited patiently, his hand at his side and still holding onto Weavile's pokeball. He heard a thump and some muffled laughter from the other side of the door after too long and he had to wonder just what had happened. Still, the sound of Layla laughing was a rather nice thing to hear, even if he would not admit it later.

Cautiously knocking again it didn't take too long for a red-faced Layla to greet him, explaining the noises he had heard.

He snorted softly, shaking his head. From behind her he could see Dragonair blinking around drowsily, no doubt awoken by her fall.

Lance held out her pokeball. "As promised," he said, sparing her the embarrassment of commenting on her blunder. If she had taken enjoyment out of it there was no need for a callous remark on the matter.

"I suppose you'll be quick to want to get breakfast after reuniting with your Pokemon," he carried on conversationally.

----[x]----

It took Blaire a moment to compose her thoughts. They were still whirling after having woken up cuddled into Benga's side. She found she rather didn't want to pull away just yet either, despite the embarrassment of the moment.

Benga noticeably didn't pull himself away just yet, perhaps leaving that up to her. Blaire wasn't entirely sure how to feel about that. A large part of her enjoyed Benga being so close.

Clearing her throat she ducked her head a little. "M-morning," she stammered, biting back a wince. This was Benga, she had no reason to be so suddenly bashful around him and yet....

She bit at her lip, a little unsure of herself. In the graying morning light she could make out his red face when she peered up at him through her bangs. No doubt her own face was just as red.

"You're really warm," she rationalized, tugging a little at his shirt. The autumn air was chilly, doubly so due to the morning sun not yet warming the air up. "Do you mind...?"

Layla blinked, taken aback at the mention of her Pokemon. In his hand, her Weavile stared back, rather wide eyed himself. She took to the Pokemon tentatively in her hands, feeling her throat tighten with emotion.

She was quick to release her Pokemon, wrapping her arms around him. He responded in the same manner, keeping a tight hold for a smaller Pokemon.

"Oh, my poor Crux," She whispered to him. "I'm sorry I let them take you..."

A huge amount of relief settled on her however. One of her Pokemon had been returned, unharmed and unchanged. She had worried immensely that she might never see them again. Even knowing one was alive was enough for her to hold out a little hope.

She allowed Crux to settle himself on her back, clutching to her shoulder as he normally had in the past.

"Wea," the Pokemon chattered, a smile on his face. He nuzzled into her cheek and she knew that this display would only be a small amount of affection shown throughout the day.

"Thank you, Lance." She finally spoke up to the man. "For everything."

Despite the rather bumpy start, she was finding that she was putting a little trust in the man. With his confession yesterday, she knew that he was not helping Genesis' cause. That had relieved her. He was using the position he had to help her. She wouldn't be able to thank him enough for it.

She gave a brief nod in response after his next question. She needed to eat, after the doctor seemed to fancy scolding her over her scrawny body. More of her attention was on Crux, patting his side carefully. Crux always responded by nuzzling into her cheek, tightening his grip carefully on her shoulders.

----[x]----

Benga wasn't sure how to respond to her words. She didn't pull away. He knew now she wanted to remain here for a time. His heart hammered against his chest loudly. Benga wondered if it could be heard. The stirring in his chest only seemed to grow stronger.

It took him a few moments to respond to her. He hadn't expected to wake up to this. Though, part of him didn't seem to mind it.

"I...don't mind," he finally responded, laying a hand carefully on her shoulder.

It was a little bold in his opinion. He knew they wouldn't be moving in the early morning light and figured he mind as well try to relax himself. No doubt, she'd be doing the same. It was a rather unfamiliar thing for both.

He cleared his throat, attempting to will the blush from his cheeks. Benga didn't care for how much his mind whirled in response to all of this. He had no idea how to reign that nervousness and uncertainty in.

Was this how it was for everyone? He had never felt so bashful or shy before. He didn't care for it. He was always rather blunt with his emotions, as was Blaire.

"Did you sleep alright?" He inquired, attempting to smooth things over.

There was no telling anymore how either slept. Some nights, little sounds kept them up, others, nightmares. It simply was the circumstance of that night. He hoped she was able to fall asleep and stay that way throughout the night. He knew it could be hard at times, however.

While Layla was quick to tend to her returned Pokemon Dragonair made her way to Lance's side. Her head nuzzled up under Lance's hand and he kept it there, a brief show of affection for the time being. The two would watch Weavile and Layla interact, finding solace in how the two were so keen with one another being 'returned.'

It was a good sign for Lance. She treated her Pokemon right and that in turn left them with this strong bond that had them rejoicing. If things like this continued Lance would easily have another ally who might want to help keep Pokemon out of unworthy humans' hands.

Until he could be sure of her standpoints and thought processes, however, he couldn't dare say anything about it. Layla could just as easily turn on him and the other old Elite Four members.

Still, he allowed a smile to spread on his lips, however small it was. Lance was not a touchy-feel person.

"It was the least that I could do," he dismissed, waving his hand at her thanks.

He turned, gesturing for her to follow as she had again. With Weavile on her shoulder Dragonair took up Lance's other side. It would be interesting to see how Weavile acted throughout the day.

"Instead let's focus on getting you both fed."

----[x]----

Blaire nodded, relief flooding through her when Benga did not push her away. Why she felt as if he would was beyond her. Though really, why she felt anything like she did in this situation was beyond her. Blaire figured it had something to do with the thoughts she did not quite want to face just yet.

She laid back, resting her head against his shoulder. Kujo was still asleep, his ear twitching occasionally. The rising and falling of his side as he breathed kept the two rocking slowly. Blaire found it to be rather comforting in a way.

Gratefulness ran through her at Benga's question. It gave her something to focus on instead of her flushed face, beating heart and whirling thoughts.

"Uh, yeah, for the most part," she answered carefully. Was Benga's heart pounding as loudly as hers? He at least seemed to be as embarrassed as she was.

At some point, back at a rebel base, they might have to set aside time to talk to each other and figure things out. The way they were, however, both so blunt and not really all that touchy-feely, rendered that situation happening at a slim. Not unless something drastic happened or one got too fed up with having no answers.

She could hear Volcarona moving nearby. He must have been the one to be on last watch. Glancing around she noted that the Meowth had left at some point in the night. Bahamut and Cerberus had taken their place, the little dragon-type curled up against Cerberus for warmth.

"What about you?" she prodded after a moment, eager to keep the distraction up. She still kept her hand tangled in his shirt, as if afraid that he would pull away.

Layla caught the small smile on his lips. She felt something stir in her again and she did her best to ignore it. She tried to keep up with him as Crux looked about. The Weavile seemed to be taking things in.

She had to find a way to explain things to him. He was shooting her curious glances and seemed to wonder what she was doing in the stronghold. Layla did her best to reassure him, patting him lightly again.

Layla glanced at Lance. She had to wonder what his intentions were. Ever since he spoke of having more of his own agenda, she had been rather curious. Crux was curious of him as well though, she'd explain that along with everything else later. It didn't stop the Pokemon from watching him rather closely on and off.

"You should smile more often," she finally commented rather absentmindedly.

She found she was notably more relaxed with him, even after the night before. Genesis members who had woken early spared them a wide birth. Whatever Lance had done over that time he was away from her in the infirmary had sent a message.

It did not relax Crux however, often shooting looks at these people as if daring to pick a fight with him.

----[x]----

Benga looked about as he listened to her. He was glad she was able to sleep through the night, even if it was light at best. It was better than nothing after all. They couldn't risk not being rested, even if it was a little.

Blaire seemed to be doing her best to reign in her emotions. He wondered if she was thinking the same thing as he was. If they would actually talk this out at one point or another.

They couldn't afford to do that now. They would be up and moving with the rising sun. Neither could not wait in Genesis' territory much longer, though, he worried about what might happen today.

He grunted a little in response, shaking his head. "I slept fine," he responded. "Though, I normally do sleep like a rock."

Every since they were kids, it had been hard to get him up. He recalled her putting ice on him, banging pots and pans, pulling the blankets off, shoving him off his bed, all of these things just to wake him up.

It was from that point on she had decided that he would still be sleeping, even if a bomb when off in their home town.

That had long since passed however, since Genesis took over. He couldn't afford to sleep in that manner anymore.

"I got enough, let's put it that way. Hopefully, things today will run as smoothly as we hope."

PostSubject: Re: [PKMN Rp] Bring us Home [OPEN]   Mon Jan 28, 2013 1:17 am

They would take the elevator yet again. Layla's injuries were worse now, thanks to last night's fiasco, and he'd rather not have them jarred from going up and down steps if it could be helped.

Lance spared her a glance, his hand still resting atop Dragonair's head. It was an absentminded statement, perhaps a thought that had drifted past her lips before she was aware of it. He shook his head, pressing the button they needed.

The doors slid shut and the elevator began its short descent before he answered her.

"Perhaps I reserve my smiles for things that are worth them."

Lance liked to fancy himself better than those happy-go-lucky fools who grinned all the time. To him it felt like they validated themselves and their troubles with a grin. It was a strange thing to Lance. Why smile if it was not worth it in some manner?

The doors opened after a moment, allowing them off on the floor they needed. Lance was quick to step out, stopping only to double check on Layla and Weavile. They both seemed alright, though Weavile was particular about observing everything.

He mulled over a thought for a moment. Seeing no harm in striking a bargain with her he spoke.

"If you work on your confidence more often then perhaps I will smile more."

----[x]----

Blaire hummed in response. Of course Benga slept well enough. He never had issues with that and it was only due to the danger on their lives each day that he had actively changed his sleeping habits. Blaire figured it was only natural that at least one of them was able to sleep so well at all times.

"Lance is the wild card," she reminded, though it was not necessary.

As long as they were lounging about, waiting for the time when they would have to go find a manhole to crawl down again, they could at least plan out what might go wrong. If they had set plans for such things it could minimize any great repercussions to a surprise or a mistake.

Besides, putting her mind on the mission allowed her to calm her whirling mind and rapid heartbeat. Blaire could think about how to approach Benga with the conversation as to what was going on between them when they were safe in a rebel base, after all. For now it had to take a back burner to more important matters.

"From what we've heard he has more concern with Pokemon than humans so he may or may not interfere."

Kujo snorted in his sleep, drawing Blaire's attention for a moment. She scoffed in amusement after watching the large Pokemon. Afterwards she tentatively laid her head back against Benga's shoulder.

"If we're lucky we might be able to avoid him altogether."

Layla hummed slightly at his first response. It seemed appropriate of him though, she knew very little of the man beside her. He had made it obvious how reserved her really was. She saw nothing wrong with that in the end.

"I want to," She responded a moment after, a small smile on her lips. "It's difficult but I'd like to work at it."

Little things got to her so easily now, it was hard to keep hold on her confidence. She wanted the person she was before. She wasn't so naive into thinking that things could ever be the same again however. They couldn't.

Still, she figured regaining part of what she had lost would be the best for her.

Crux sent her another look frowning slightly. She only smile back, shaking her head. They'd talk about it later. The Pokemon she knew would no doubt be outraged by the treatment she would convey. She'd rather not have him make a scene when people were around, even if he wasn't going to hurt anyone intentionally.

----[x]----

Benga listened thoughtfully as she plowed on. That bit of information was a comforting one, though, he had to wonder why someone like Lance would take a 'charge' when he didn't care for humans so much. Perhaps it was forced on him. They had no answer to that question.

"Well, let's hope he doesn't," he responded, glancing down at her. "I'd rather us get in, find as many as we can, and get out. If we're lucky, we might find his charge and grab her as well."

Benga wandered if this woman working closer with Lance would know anything different. Those working under Genesis were rather meek or broken by the time they escaped. A very rare few had continued to fight back.

It simply depended on the person and their personality in the end.

His heart pounded again as she moved closer to him though he attempted to dismiss it, thinking on the day ahead.

"If this goes well, we'll be able to the old man again." He noted, shooting her a toothy grin.

For the longest time, his grandfather had viewed them as his children. He acted as such for every wayward person. So much so, Blaire had adopted calling him 'Papa Bear' for quite some time.

Benga had found it all rather fitting for his grandfather in the end.

Before the reached the cafeteria Lance reached out, clasping Layla's shoulder at her answer. It wasn't a strong one but she did want to try and heal. It was the best that they could hope for. People as broken as she was always carried scars and she would be no different.

Lance made sure that she went first, getting something for herself and Weavile. He wanted to make sure that those under him were fed first. It didn't take them long to get something and to be seated.

Dragonair was quick to help herself to an apple on his plate. He watched her in amusement, patting her snout for a moment.

"I take it you two will want to take some time to 'catch up?'" Lance questioned, shooting a look at Layla and Weavile. They didn't seem eager to part, in fact he caught another quick act of affection passed from Weavile to Layla. Another smile tugged at the corner of his lips at that.

"In the center of the stronghold is a garden of sorts. Not many stop by there," he suggested.

Many of Genesis' employees did not exactly want to dither about in a garden. Many enjoyed city life more or had errands to attend to. They might pass through or by it to the other side of the building but they did not linger there.

----[x]----

She nodded rather absently at his answer. She was still thinking through things that could go wrong, trying to discern which ones were more likely. They already both knew where the meeting spot was and would make their way there if separated with whoever they had broken out. That was the least of her concerns for the time being.

"If we can find his 'assistant' she might be able to give us some insight into what he's really after," she mulled after a moment. "That is, if she hasn't been affected by Stockholm's Syndrome."

It was a sad reality but it happened more often then they cared to admit. Victims identified and grew close to those who abused them. It was often that she and Benga had to force them away for their own safety resulting in many injuries in the process.

At the mention of Alder Blaire grinned, glancing up at Benga. Despite the fact that he still had an arm around her and she was still very much cuddled up into his side the conversation seemed to be able to let them focus on other things.

"I'm sure Papa Bear will be happy about that," she said, grinning wider. It had been a few weeks since they had been back at the Mount Moon base where Alder resided for the time being. It would be nice to see him again after so long.

"Maybe you can ask ol' Papa Bear for tips on flirting with a woman," Blaire teased. It was no secret that Alder had been something of a flirt before more serious matters with Genesis had cropped up. Sometimes she liked to embarrass Benga with that fact.

Layla was grateful for the comfort she received, whatever little of it there was. The start of the day had made her lighter, things turning for the better. She wouldn't have imagined that could be possible, especially withing one of Genesis' strongholds.

Not two days before, she had expected Lance to be like all of the others. She felt a little guilty for thinking as such now.

She was quick to grab something for herself and Crux. Afterward, they sat down. Layla smiled as Crux nuzzled into her again before taking a pear and began eating. She listened as Lance spoke, blinking a little.

"I would, yes," she began, watching the man. "I hadn't expected to hear of a place like that hear. Thank you."

Genesis hadn't seemed the type to indulge in 'nature' of sorts. She had an appreciation of it, found more interesting things within woods just waking or lazing about then she did in the city. Cities were loud and crowded - always made her nervous. A place like that, she figured it would be perfect.

"I'd like to explain it to him," She noted, smiling slightly at Crux. "Though, I'm afraid he might get a little...angry with it. I'd rather not make a scene."

Given the circumstances, Crux had idea what had happened to his trainer and it showed. He studied her for some kind of answer but there was none to give. Layla didn't want his anger to be used as an excuse, she didn't want him taken again. If he did lose his temper, at least there would be less around that would be 'targeted' by the Pokemon.

She hated walking on egg shells, especially given that she wanted to reign in her confidence. This kind of pre-caution, however, she figured was alright.

----[x]----

Benge scrunched his nose at the mention of Stockholm's Syndrome. How anyone could actively grow close to their abusers, he never understood. It was a strange thing and he didn't care to be reminded of it.

A few people had nearly gotten him injured, having to drag them out, after all. It was not something he cared to deal with, despite the given situation.

"Don't remind me," he responded, scratching his cheek with his free hand. "We won't know unless we find her. Though, I hope it's not another case like that..."

He couldn't understand it but he didn't want to think of it now. There would be a slim chance of even finding that woman in the building. He wasn't even sure where to look. It wasn't like he could stop and ask. Unless she gave something away that let them know she was Lance's 'assistant', there would really be no identifying who was who.

Benga felt his cheeks warm again at the mention of his grandfather. The man had always taken up flirting whether it was wanted or not. It often embarrassed Benga that Alder was so open about it.

Mentioning it in the position they were in now made his heart stir once again.

"I've never been good at that kind of thing..." He relented, coughing into his fist. "But at least I'm not as bad as you, subtle as a train wreck."

He blinked up, gazing out the window. The sun was rising steadily. They'd have to make a move soon.

Lance shook his head at her, taking a moment to eat some of the food on his plate before he would answer.

Of course she should not have expected, she had been passed around smaller bases and strongholds before. It was only the larger ones such as this that had the gardens in the center. It was more to show off though to who was anyone's guess. It's not like they had visitors or any such thing that liked to take tours through the areas.

"Not surprising," he said finally, "most areas don't have the funding or size for one."

At the mention of Weavile getting angry over the answer Lance was left unsurprised. It would only be a natural reaction from the Pokemon of one who was once a rebel. Still, if he caused minimal damage it would be alright. As if to convey this he glanced at Dragonair discreetly. She nodded, cooing and moving around to nudge at Weavile in a friendly manner.

While they were there she'd do her best to keep Weavile calm.

"If you find a secluded spot there and keep Dragonair nearby you should have no problem," he suggested after a moment.

----[x]----

Blaire couldn't help but chuckle at Benga's reluctance to this conversation. Always, it was the only thing about his grandpa that Benga seemed to get embarrassed about and Blaire delighted in exploiting it from time to time.

"Hey, I may be subtle as a train wreck but at least I leave an impression!" she defended, turning to pout at him.

It had actually been something Alder had given as advice at one point a few years back to her. Why he had indulged it to her and not to Benga, who never even tried his hand at it for various reasons, had baffled Blaire but she hadn't questioned.

"If I make someone smile than they're more apt to remember me and I can be cute and charming to make up for it later~," she carried on.

She took the time then to glance up at the filmy windows, gauging what time it might be by the gray lighting outside. It was getting brighter as they spoke, chasing away shadows outside and causing deeper ones in corners and under broken furniture in the little shack.

"Maybe we should get going," she offered, a little reluctant to get up. After a moment she did however, untangling herself from Benga's side and offering a hand to pull him up as well. Blaire wouldn't make note of how disappointment ran through her at not being cuddled into Benga's side anymore.

That wasn't exactly what needed to be the main focus of their thoughts.

Layla gave a brief nod at his first response. That was very true. Most of them were smaller and a tad more cramped. There were many from Genesis there however, despite the space issue. Layla attempted to shake those thoughts from her mind.

Those were not happy times to think of. She couldn't let herself fall into a darker place because of them.

Layla watched as Dragonair nuzzled into Crux a little. The Pokemon seemed uncertain of the motion at first but relaxed a little afterward, responding in the same manner. Crux had been the laxer of her Pokemon, more quirky and willing to be a tad goofy or affectionate.

It was nice to see, in her opinion and she smiled. She was afraid Crux would have suffered the way she had, growing to no longer trust others.

"I'll keep that in mind," She finally responded, glancing at Lance again.

Layla was beginning to feel lighter. Her stomach didn't complain as much as she ate, didn't protest when someone moved passed. It might have simply been a 'good day'. Layla hoped nothing would turn, however. She needed to relax for once and it seemed time was finally allowing that.

----[x]----

Benga grunted in response. What she said was true. Even if she wasn't so subtle about her emotions or intentions, she knew how to make a person laugh and smile. It was a talent in a way. She did what she was able to cheer people up.

It left some in the base in a rather light mood and no one tended to complain about it.

He blinked up at the window again. The sun was climbing higher and they needed to get moving. He didn't say it, but as she pulled away the cold that assaulted him after bothered him more than it should have. Still, he took her hand, letting her haul him to his feet.

"Given the time, it might be best. We can't waste the light, though, knowing us, the dark is gonna make great cover if we end up running about too long."

It was a normal worry. Even if they had a set time or plan, it never went that way. A quick attack might have drawn out for hours though, it might have only felt like minutes.

He knew today would be no different.

Calling back his Volcarona, he heaved a sigh. It was nearly that time. They would have to split up, along with their Pokemon, and hope that things simply worked out.

That was an unnerving thing for him, despite his efforts to hide it.

"Time to rock, yea?" He attempted to jest, shooting the woman a smirk.

Benga had no doubt that she was nervous as well. They always were, despite whatever efforts to reign in their composer was made. Either could easily never be seen again.

That thought alone was what unnerved him the most.

Lance didn't seem to notice the way Weavile and Dragonair took to each other, despite what Weavile might have gone through. He did take note of it despite this appearance. It lessened any immediate problems that might have arisen with his Pokemon following after Layla for protection after all.

"When you want to go there Dragonair can show you the way," he told her after a moment, chewing his food carefully. Lance wasn't one to rush himself just to get work done.

Still, while Layla conversed with Weavile he would be back to trying to locate the rest of her Pokemon. He'd have to contact Lorelei and the others soon as well. Though he didn't have much to update them with he needed to know about what was happening on their ends.

No doubt Bruno was out training himself and his Pokemon yet again.

Lance shook those thoughts from his head for the time being.

"You'll want to avoid the labs," he cautioned though Lance would not go into why. It should have been fairly obvious given Genesis' need to experiment.

----[x]----

Blaire felt too cold now that she was away from Benga, distracting herself by recalling her Pokemon. She'd make it up to them back at the rebel base for keeping watch so faithfully without complaint. It wouldn't be much but it was the best she could do in times like these.

"Let's just hope we don't end up getting lost," she mumbled, shaking her head.

It wasn't often, when they had a map for reference, that this happened. However down in the sewers any of those Pokemon taking refuge down there could become hostile, feeling threatened that their territory was being invaded. Some might outright attack or they might have to double around.

Blaire gave a small smirk of her own in response to Benga's. It was their way of keeping calm before a mission.

"We'll give 'em one hell of a party!"

Despite the words, it was still a bigger mission than they were used to. A larger area to scour, a better chance to get separated and many, many more enemies to deal with. Any number of things could go wrong.

Blair was the first to exit the shack, taking care to duck under the broken down doorway. She didn't much care for the idea of it falling down on her. She waited patiently for Benga to emerge as well before they started back off for the city.

In the morning light and past the thin layer of trees the Genesis stronghold looked even more foreboding.

Tentatively Blaire reached out for Benga's hand, ignoring the fact that her face warmed a little at this.

"Don't want you falling behind, y'know?" she covered though it was a weak cover story at best.

Layla finished what was left of her food, not much there to begin with. She had tried to put more on her plate and would do as such everyday until she could be considered at a healthy weight again. The doctor had frowned upon how scrawny she had been for her height.

Layla frowned, the mention of the labs unsettling her a tad. She didn't like to think of those places. She had seen some of the things there, in smaller strongholds. She didn't care to think about it.

"I will," She assured. She reached out, patting Crux before she did the same for Dragonair. "I don't particularly care for those places..."

It was for good reason. She would not be moving anywhere near there if she could help it.

Her mind instead pondered what Lance had been planning. She knew he had his own agenda now and was only here to ensure the safety of his Pokemon and himself. But what was he attempting to gain? She couldn't be sure. The man had not told her much and part of her doubted that he would anytime soon.

Still, she could not stop herself from wondering.

----[x]----

Benga glanced back once at the stronghold as they began heading back toward the city. They would duck back into the sewers again and find their way into the building, their Pokemon creating distractions to cover their tracks.

This was what Benga hoped for however.

There was no telling what would happen once inside the building. They couldn't even be certain of how many people would openly fight back against Genesis and escape with them. It was all a matter of chance.

His thoughts were broken as Blaire took his hand into her own. His cheeks warmed immediately though, he squeezed her hand slightly in response. It wasn't something he was used to and wasn't too sure if this was the appropriate response.

Clearing his throat slightly, he shook those thoughts away. "Sure, r-right."

Benga was always at a loss for words in moments like these. It wasn't like he actively attempted to be affectionate around women. His heart raced at the thought and quickly attempted to put his mind on something else.

It was hard when the silence was so awkward between them.

Still, Blaire didn't seem to mind it. As the city drew closer, easier to see where they were going, the silence between them only remained so they might not be detected by those of Genesis. Once they slipped back into the sewers, they would be able to speak openly again, if only for a short time before splitting up.

Lance grunted in response, if only to let her know he had heard her. It didn't take him long to finish up his own breakfast, pushing the emptied plate away from himself. He stood then, pausing only to glance at the trio beside him.

"It might be best if I am away while you catch Weavile up to speed on things," he noted. "If you need me you'll know where I'll be."

He nodded to Layla before turning and leaving. He didn't feel a need to hang about and wait for Layla to be off first. He had things to do and there was only so much time in the day to accomplish them. Chasing down the rest of her Pokemon was quite a chore in and of itself, after all.

Dragonair watched Lance leave silently, with a flick of her tail. Lance was always off on his own agenda, leaving with little warning whenever he felt he needed something done. It was no longer a surprise to Dragonair when he suddenly just up and left like this.

She instead cooed, turning to nudge at Weavile and Layla again. They had finished eating before Lance had and had yet to move. Didn't they want to see the gardens? That's what Dragonair had thought.

Trilling a little more insistently this time she turned, slithering forth a few 'paces' before stopping and looking pointedly at the pair.

----[x]----

Blaire couldn't help but chuckle a little at Benga's awkward reply, sparing him a small smile. It surprised her a little that he was even more awkward than she was with something like this. Blaire wouldn't point that out however. She could at least spare him that dignity.

What's more she rather liked when he squeezed her hand back.

It felt like a much longer trip back into the city than it was leaving in the dark. The silence made the seconds ticking by feel even longer though neither dared to say anything in fear of bringing someone's unsavory attention their way.

Inside the city's limits it became a little easy to skirt about quicker. It was even quicker to find a manhole out of sight of those in the main streets, leaving Blaire a little relieved of this.

Reluctantly letting go of Benga's hand then she spared him a glance. When she spoke up she kept her voice down, just in case anyone else was skulking about in the alleys and back roads. "Suppose it's a good time as any to get a move on in there."

They would have to leave Shiva and Latias behind with specific instructions. It wasn't as if they would be able to attack from below and serve as a distraction that way. Still, this would mean they could not dawdle about and get caught up in the sewers. If they did their timing could be messed up and the two dragons would attack and cause diversions prematurely.

"So, any idea how long it might take us?"

They both had a good idea as to how large the sewer system was thanks to the day before. It would just be getting a good estimate of how long it would take them to get into position that would be troublesome.

Layla smiled at Dragonair. She seemed to want to lead them on. Layla didn't quite care to leave when in the middle of a conversation, even if it was little things. Lance seemed to be very hard to get to know. She wanted to trust him, she simply hoped he'd allow some trust in return.

Regardless, she let Crux climb onto her shoulders again. His claws dug into the white clothe of her shirt. She'd forgotten her jacket that morning though didn't seem to mind it.

Layla followed Dragonair. The Pokemon knew the building and she trusted that they would get there at a steady pace. The pain killers threw off any pain she would have felt but they still avoided stairs if they could help it.

At one point, Layla did catch sight of the garden though they were still floors above it. She lingered for a moment, watching it's stillness. No one seemed to be inside. The foliage looked healthy however, from what she could see.

She couldn't help but smile at the sight of it, following Dragonair a little quicker to reach the place.

----[x]----

The walk into the city hadn't been as restless as previous times. They knew the alleyways now, able to duck through without detection. Benga was glad for this. They didn't have time to be chased by any Genesis member who saw them.

At her question, he glanced at the sky. The sun hadn't yet reached noon. He doubted it would for quite some time, gauging the time to be a little after eight or near nine in the morning. That gave them plenty of time, if things went correctly.

"I'm hoping perhaps an hour," He relayed, glancing back down at her. "We know the general area for the most part."

Above ground and under were too different things, he knew that very well. Still, given how many times they trekked through the area, general direction could easily be used in their favor. That was, if they didn't get lost.

He tugged out Latias' Pokeball, releasing the dragon Pokemon. She blinked at the pair, waiting for the orders that would be conveyed.

It would be a simply plan. He explained what needed to be done to the Pokemon. Benga made sure that Latias would remained cloaked as well, given, just in case. The Pokemon would have to rely on their own ability to survive to get where they needed to go.

Only when Latias and Shiva were at an understanding did he knell down, removing the manhole cover again. He scrunched his nose, not caring for this method but knew it was their best chance. Benga waited until Blaire slipped in before he followed, pulling the manhole cover over top once again and plunging them into darkness.

When Layla picked up pace it was noticeable to Dragonair. She chimed out, speeding up herself to lead Layla to the next and last elevator to reach the garden. Inside it she had a little difficulty pressing the button needed with her snout but managed it, settling back near Layla as it began its descent for them.

Only when the doors slid open were they admitted into the garden. Dragonair was the first out into the more humid air.

Many of the fauna was imported out, nothing inside indigenous to the area outside of the stronghold. Because of this the temperature had to be maintained to provide for the plant life within.

Dragonair cooed happily, relishing in the warm air. Her scales were already glistening in the humidity, water settling in on her scales.

----[x]----

While Benga briefed the two Pokemon Blaire took the time to make sure they were a little better prepared. So that she didn't have to fumble about in the darkness she pulled out the two flashlights and the map ahead of time.

Down in the sewers any little sound echoed, making it much louder than it originally was. Blaire was quick to flip on her flashlight, handing the other to Benga as they had before.

She didn't move just yet, not until she had the map unfolded, flashlight in her mouth. Her jaw would be cramped by the end of this but it was a minor discomfort. Blaire would do her best to ignore it.

"We won't be able to go up too high," she noted from around the flashlight, her words muffled. She started them off only when she was sure Benga was ready to follow. "That'd be foolish."

Despite everyone in the building they could not risk going up all the way to the top just to try and convince people to come with them, to fight back and to get away for their own safety. Not with Shiva and Latias attacking from outside when it would all be going down. They would have to hope some would take advantage of the situation and make their own escape if they could not be reached by the two.

"We should probably designate a meeting spot in the building before we go in. Go no higher and all that," she offered.

Layla was happy to enter the garden. The air was warm, warmer than the outside now. Autumn had chilled the air and the leaves on the trees had long since died. Here, it seemed more like a permanent summer. It reminded her of simpler times.

She avoided tugging at the sleeves of her shirt, despite the humidity inside. Until things were explained to Crux, she did not want to risk him knowing her torture the past few months.

Layla wandered for quite a bit of time, letting Crux do as he pleased, moving more along with Dragonair than herself for the time. It must have been difficult, finding other friendly Pokemon in the time he had been taken from her.

Eventually, she settled down, leaning against a tree. It towered in the air despite the size of the garden. Places like this had always been amazing to her.

It was only then did she motion for the Pokemon to sit near her again, halting his playing. The explanation was long and none of the stories were particularly comforting or 'pretty'. Until she had come to Lance, she had been openly mistreated.

They were painful memories but she plowed on despite that fact, watching Crux's expression throughout the time she spoke. He'd yet to lash out though, he did not looked pleased with the information. If he was going to target anyone, it would most likely be any wayward Genesis member who he felt like picking a fight with.

Layla would make sure that did not happen however. Despite his good intentions, she couldn't have him taken from here again.

----[x]----

Benga resisted gagging at the smell of the sewers again. Despite being here only hours before, it left him little comfort when he had to inhale the air. He shook his head slightly, attempting to ignore it.

As they walked, he mulled over her words. They wouldn't be able to get everyone out, but a couple of floors, attempting to convince people would be enough. He knew there wouldn't be a way to escape all combat, but they had to at least try to move as fast as possible.

"Two or three floors maybe?" He suggested. "We won't be able to get them all out, but maybe in the mess, some on the higher floors can slips out. It's only a guess, but I'd hope some would take advantage of the situation."

He snorted at that. Part of him wondered how many they would be able to free.

They wouldn't be able to pull any of the heavily injured out, if they had been treated in the first place.

Regardless, a couple floors would be enough. Some was better than none at all, in the end. He'd rather risk his life for a few of them to help the cause rather than just jump in for nothing.

"We'll meet up on the second floor at least, maybe even the third if we have to," he plowed on. "Then move down and back into the sewers again."

Benga hoped this would all go according the plan. He knew how things could work against them, however, and his stomach lurched to think about it.

Dragonair delighted in playing with Weavile. It had been a long time since any opportunity to do just that had arose. Their cries and shouts would reach out, muffled by the plants. Occasionally Dragonair would reach out to smack Weavile with her tail, a gentle hit, really, just enough to send him stumbling.

She halted when Layla finally called out for Weavile to join her under a tree. Dragonair waited then, watching the two carefully. Occasionally her tail would flick at the air but she remained in place for the most part.

When Weavile looked more agitated Dragonair took to patrolling the little area. She didn't want the other Pokemon to reach out and attack someone who might come strolling by because of any temper.

In fact, Weavile looked downright displeased.

Eventually Dragonair sidled up carefully, nudging Weavile's shoulder experimentally. She cooed quietly, wondering how the Pokemon was taking it all in.

----[x]----

"Sounds as good a plan as any," Blaire said, taking them around a turn. She kept her pace quick, unwilling to lose any time in case they had to back track. Occasionally a Raticate or Rattata would slip past her light though they remained unhampered by the wild Pokemon.

She tried to discern from memory or wide the building was. The floors would be large and if they were lucky they might save a good handful of people without too much trouble from them.

Blaire tried to ignore the fact that it wouldn't be so troublesome for them if the rebels could afford to get some good equipment for missions like this. However it was simply out of the question. Headsets and the like were well guarded anymore by Genesis members and even purchasing walkie-talkies had people eyeing the buyer curiously.

"Powering through might be the best course of action," she brooded out loud. She paused, glancing at Benga. It might have already crossed his mind but she wanted to put the thought out there. "It might be good for Volcarona to buff himself up with Quiver Dance a few times before we rush in."

Her own Pokemon did not have such techniques under the belt. She regretted it in instances like this thought she had speedy, powerful Pokemon as it stood. They could hold their own.

Layla watched as Crux attempted to calm himself. The Pokemon muttered under his breath but as Dragonair reached out to him, he seemed to visibly attempt to reign in the foreign, negative emotions he felt.

Layla felt that he couldn't be blamed and was thankful that Dragonair did what she could to calm him.

"Despite all that's happened," She mused out loud, catching their attention. "I'd like to think things are looking up."

Layla paused for a moment, mulling over her words. Crux blinked at her, as if unsure of what she was meaning. Everything had been different with Lance, despite how he acted. She wanted to put her trust in him.

"Despite being a little emotionally crippled with people," She plowed on, smiling a little. "I'd like to trust Lance, if he'd allow the same for me."

Out of the people in the building, he and Sam were really the only people whom she could call 'friend'. She thought of that term loosely for Lance for a time. She hardly knew the man at this point. She hoped that could change. She wanted to trust him, wanted to be a little closer to him. It was simply figuring out how.

She tried to put the thought from her mind, smiling a little brighter at the pair. She drew her legs to her chest, tipping her head back slightly, watching the leaves above them.

"It's ironic that people here would even think of putting something like this here..." She mused quietly.

It was the only statement she made after before she closed her eye for a short time, taking in the warmth around her.

----[x]----

"That's what I'm hoping will happen," he responded, glancing about. If he denied that he was anxious, he would have been lying. "I'd rather avoid the combat if I could. Knowing Genesis though, that won't happen."

He remained silent for a moment, quietly mulling over the plan. He ran through it several times, every detail there. Despite that fact, he could not calm his nervousness. There was no way that this could run according the plan and they both knew it.

They were simply attempting to fool themselves.

He shook his head slightly at the thought. He didn't care to think thees ways. Benga hated how pessimistic most people had to be. He liked to think that he wasn't like that. This was obviously untrue however.

Even anxiety fell onto him once in a while.

"Of course," He crowed, attempting to smooth things over, distract himself from his thoughts. "Volcarona will take out anyone that way! I wouldn't think of having it any other way!"

Benga grinned at the thought. Still, deep in his stomach, nervousness ate away at them. If they were drawing any closer now, they would be launching their attack soon. From that point on, they would have to watch their own backs for a time.

He hoped she would be alright on her own.

Dragonair watched the two, keeping tabs on things. It seemed Weavile was calming, if only for his trainer. This allowed Dragonair to relax, keeping an eye around them.

Layla seemed much more content with her Pokemon and her musings seemed to Dragonair as one who had been putting much thought into these things. Dragonair trilled, shaking herself as if in agreement to Layla's statement of trusting Lance.

She glanced up, eyeing the leaves of the tree above them. The sunlight that filtered in through the glass roof wasn't as warm as it would be at midday and yet Dragonair delighted in it anyways.

Now-a-days she didn't get to be outside as often. It was a sad thought.

Reaching forward she pushed her face towards Layla's, observing the woman. What was she thinking? How did she feel? These questions left Dragonair curious.

----[x]----

Blaire was grateful for Benga's old attitude rising again. It was something for the two to concentrate on. Joking with each other before something so big probably did better for the psyche than anything else. Or rather, Blaire liked to think so.

"Only if Kujo, Cerberus and I don't blast everything with fire first," she teased.

It was dangerous for those that they couldn't reach but they would be stupid to leave the stronghold without serious damage. With Shiva and Latias attacking the outside Blaire would have Kujo and Cerberus focus on not only their enemies but the inside as well.

She paused, taking the flashlight from her mouth and inspecting the last leg of their sewer path. Blaire made quick work of folding up the map, shoving it unceremoniously in her pocket. They wouldn't need it once inside.

"Just down this way and we take a left," she noted, picking up her pace. Benga would have no problem keeping up. He had a bit of a longer stride than she did and covered more ground as such.

"After that we'll get the party started."

Blaire could only hope that things proceeded smoothly for them after that.

Layla blinked as Dragonair pushed her face into hers. She laughed a little, reaching out and patting her side. As she sprawled her legs out again, Crux brought himself onto her lap, settling in for a time.

"I'm okay," she spoke, lifting her hand a little. "I haven't been this content in a long time. I can only hope it sticks around."

Despite the depression that had fallen on her over a time, she felt that good days could be coming. Part of her wondered if that was the optimism buried away for such a long time. It happened to more than they would know. People like herself? They didn't want to hope for the better only to have worse fall onto them.

She nudged the Dragonair playfully a moment afterward. "You've found quite handsome trainer, I'll admit that." She jested lightly.

Layla laughed Dragonair's expression as well as Crux swiping at her lightly, in attempts to calm her joking about. He didn't quite care in 'giving up' his trainer to someone she hardly knew.

----[x]----

Benga snickered in response, glad that she was able t joke about despite the task at hand. He knew that the both of them were nervous about this. Had been for quite some time. Now it was only a matter of time before they would be putting their plans in motion.

At the last bend, he released his Volcarona. The Pokemon shook himself in excitement, fluttering near his trainer. It had been quite some time since they had gotten into any 'trouble', of sorts.

"Third or second floor," he mentioned on last time. "If anything too drastic happens, get whoever you can out and leave. We'll meet up at the place we planned."

He knew that she knew all of this. Still, he felt a little reassured to repeat it, make sure she understood as well as reminding himself a little. The plan sounded a tad more favorable now that he had heard it again.

Above them, they waited for a few minutes until Latias and Shiva launched their attacks. The ground shook above them. Benga ordered Volcarona to use Quiver Dance a few times before he gave a brief nod toward Blaire.

They would both enter the building, heading out in different directions and hope for the best between them.

Dragonair was a little stunned by the words Layla had uttered. She found her trainer appealing? After a moment she keened joyfully at this idea. It had been a long time since Lance had gotten close to anyone. He couldn't even see his sister anymore as she had been taken part of the rebellion.

The Pokemon could only hope that something would come of it.

She took enjoyment out of Weavile's distress at this idea. Dragonair reached down, nudging Weavile gently as if to prod him into the idea. To her it was a wonderful one!

She keened again then, her mood the best it had been in weeks.

That was before an alarm sounded out, drawing her attention immediately. She remained stock still for a moment, listening. Dragonair shrieked then, nudging Layla up onto her feet, in a rush. They had to find Lance. That was an alarm for intruders, however rare it had to be used.

----[x]----

Blaire had been quick to release Kujo and Cerberus, nodding to Benga as he repeated the plan. It was a simple one but even the simplest of plans had a habit of going awry by the second or third phase. She could only hope luck would hold out for them.

"Right," she agreed, drawing herself up onto Kujo's back. She might have made for more of a target up here but she felt it only fair. Her Pokemon's lives were at risk and she could take some of the brunt of it as well if she had to.

"Remember now, Mr. Hero," she jested with a sardonic smirk. "We got plans to beat each other up later, so no losing to anyone out there, ya hear?"

With that she pointed up the sloping tunnel. They couldn't exactly pry the opening off themselves. Kujo and Cerberus would be the ones to remedy that problem however.

"Now, let's make an entrance with Flamethrower!"

It was a simple matter to blow into the building's lower level with the combined attacks from her Pokemon. The heat alone was sweltering and some of the sewage caught fire, leaving destruction already behind in her wake. Kujo and Cerberus were quick to take the lead, powering up the slope at Blaire's command.

She turned just long enough to call back "I'll take left! You take right!"
