Kalila kicked back, hands tucked behind her head and her leg propped up on her knee. The plane ride here was long enough. It was only after did it suddenly disappear midair. Like to Master Hao, they'd been saved from plummeting thousands of feet to the ground below. Even still, Kalila's stomach hadn't quite settled yet.

"Nice sky tonight," she commented offhandedly.

With her feet back on the ground, she felt a little more comfortable. She wasn't one for flying. Given that she had to return to America for the remainder of the shaman fight though? That was a little unexpected.

Briefly, she glanced up to see where Ayasha had wandered. She remained nearby, near Hao. It seemed she'd taken a liking to him. Perhaps she could something of a kindred spirit. Her life hadn't exactly been an easy one. No shaman's was however.

For the time being, Kalila would leave them to their devices. It seemed best, all things considered. She wanted Ayasha to be happy. Who knew, maybe now she could be.

---- [ x ] ----

It hadn't been long since they landed back in America. Hao's allies had spread out, some heading straight for the Patch Village as instructed, others sticking close by. He didn't mind either way. Those who survived would greet a new world with him once he became the Shaman King.

Recently, one young woman had taken a liking to him. This wasn't such a surprise. Many shamans seemed to find solace in his presence. He was not so petty as to deny them the pleasure.

He knew enough about Ayasha at this point. It was easy to dig up a past within her minds eye. A troubled life and parents who shunned her. It seemed the only light that was left in Ayasha's life was the woman nearby.

"I certainly hope the flight, and fall, didn't do anything to upset you, Ayasha," he pointed out, catching the girls attention, "You know, if your friend shrieked any louder, I would have been concerned for the both of you."

Nearby, he could hear the woman snort though, she remained silent. Kalila wasn't too far. Perhaps she had heard and found some amusement or embarrassment in the way she had reacted.

Mohammad spared a glance around at those followers that remained. Many seemed to be catching their breath and their bearings after the fall though none were injured it seemed. Spirits remained near their shaman partners, some reflecting and others hosting a number of conversations. It was nice to see such a group exist like this with so many of their kind bullied and harassed for what they were.

He spotted a familiar woman off on her own, looking as if she might still be a little shaky. Sparing a glance at Djinn, the pair headed towards Kalila and Valen. It would be best to make sure all was well before the remainder of their group headed off from this spot.

“Everything all right?” he wondered as he neared, glancing between woman and spirit. The large deer that was Valen seemed peaceful enough though Mohammad did not really know him well. He seemed to stick close to Kalila’s side more often than not.

Keeping a respectful distance, so as not to trigger any overprotectiveness Valen might have for his shamanic partner, Mohammad crouched down. He rested his elbows on his knees and waited for an answer. Admittedly he was rather curious of the woman in baggy clothing, the one who seemed to care for the one near Hao’s side as of the moment. What was their story? It was an interesting thought.

----[x]----

The trip to America had been an eventful one, at least at the end. Ayasha was sure that Kalila had never screamed louder before in her life though they’d all landed safely enough. With everyone coming down from the adrenaline high from the fall many had wandered off, some heading towards Patch Village already though she and Kalila remained.

Only when Ayasha had been sure that Kalila was okay, Valen at her side, did Ayasha wander off, closer towards Hao. She was curious of him though much of what she might want to ask remained unsaid. If she annoyed him at times he did not show it, instead he seemed to humor her. At least, that was the feeling Ayasha got. It was hard to tell sometimes.

She blinked, glancing at Hao as he spoke. He seemed a little amused by the proceedings that had transpired though Ayasha couldn’t be sure. He might just want to be polite.

“No way! It was fun,” she admitted with a grin. “Flying is pretty cool no matter what Kalila says!”

Traveling as they did and living day-to-day Ayasha didn’t get to experience a lot of the more thrilling aspects of life, especially so with Kalila’s mother hen tendencies at times. Being able to do them now in the Shaman Fights was exhilarating.

Kalila could hear every word spoken, or at least those that weren't so hushed. It almost seemed like Hao was teasing the both of them. For someone so young, he certainly had something of a charm that Ayasha was attracted to. Kalila couldn't quite say anything about it. Ayasha was still young, still had quite a bit to experience. Why stop her from doing so?

Those thoughts were distracted when another voice rang out. She blinked, glancing at the man she'd seen nearby Hao earlier. His face was obstructed from view, only his eyes visible. For a brief moment, she only stared back. A lazy grin finally tugged at her lips.

"Ah, I'm alright," she finally replied.

On the contrary, you screamed like a little girl. Valen decided to add.

Kalila snorted in amusement. It was rare that the deer would point out something in good humor. Given the situation well, she'd just opened herself up for being taunted.

"I don't like heights," she defended, "And falling even less so. Can you blame me, friend? The most that's hurt is my pride."

---- [ x ] ----

For only a moment did Ayasha appear surprised that he had spoken to her. A grin spread over her lips not a moment later. She denied being frightened at all. In some respect, she faced these things with some childish excitement and optimism.

A short chuckle left Hao. It seemed the two had been around each other long enough to know their habits, fears, and he could only guess what else. Kalila had come off something of a motherly type. Ordinarily, he would only allow someone of great strength to travel. Still, the pair were interesting and a healer was something of an importance.

"A brave one, are you?" he responded, if teasing just a little bit. From the looks of it, that was very much the case, "I wonder how far mother hen will allow you from the flock."

Ayasha seemed to be willing to do just about anything if it provided a bit of entertainment for her in turn. That could be very useful in time. Hao would have to test the waters a bit. For the moment, he was content allowing them all to rest.

"You very much seem the type to crave a bit of excitement, I can see," he continued after a moment, "I'm sure this all will be eventful for you."

Despite her assertion on the matter Mohammad was inclined to think otherwise, especially so when her spirit ally spoke up about it. Mohammad resisted a shake of his head. They’d all heard her shrieking even as they focused on saving themselves one by one. One would need to be a fool not to have heard her or recognized who it was.

“Perhaps you’ve yet to become truly strong then,” Mohammad pointed out, frowning behind the clothe that hid much of his face from view. If that were the case then their only healer would need some protection. Had Hao accounted for that or not? It was hard to say without outright asking.

He shook the thought away. For now dwelling on it would do no one any good. Such things could be taken care of in time, when it was needed.

“However if you are sure you are safe then I will leave it lie,” he promised.

For the moment they all needed a bit of rest, at least those that remained at Hao’s side. Others had already left, on the way to Patch Village. It would undoubtedly not be long before they followed suit however.

----[x]----

He might have been teasing her though Ayasha still felt a little proud at being able to gather his attention somehow. He was a busy guy, leading all of them as it was and someone like her? She was just a foot soldier at best and she knew it. At the very least all of this let her experience new things and to fight for a cause she could believe in.

Still, that feeling was crushed a second later when Hao mentioned Kalila’s tendency to mother her. Ayasha sighed at that. Was it that obvious?

“Why do you gotta say it like that? Jeez…” she huffed. “Kalila’s not mom, anyways, Kalila is big sister!”

Though she said that Ayasha was never sure how Kalila saw herself to Ayasha. Maybe it was the opposite with how long it had been. Still, it wasn’t a topic one just asked and she supposed it didn’t matter so long as they saw each other as family anyways. The thought was there and gone again a moment later.

The topic hadn’t lasted long, perhaps thankfully so. Ayasha grinned cheekily. “Well, of course!”

Kalila could see something of a critical eye studying her. She didn't falter. Truth be told, he was right, she wasn't strong. Her only ace in the hole involved killing her opponent entirely and that left her drained mentally and physically. Giving life could easily have a price, in the end of it all.

"Strength is a funny thing. Comes in all shapes and sizes. Maybe you just haven't seen mine yet?" she teased in response.

Kalila pushed herself up, leaning back lazily. Still, she smiled kindly at the man who's features were obscured. Kalila had learned long ago that appearing and being friendly could be a rather large advantage.

"You're the one a lot of the others call 'Chief', right?" she asked after a moment, "We came on so abruptly, I don't think I ever got your name."

For the most part, Hao's group was split in Japan. They had their own fights to attend to. Most had only just met traveling back to America. This was much the same case. Kalila would make a point to remain friendly with those next to Hao, if only to ensure she and Ayasha were kept as safe as they could be here.

She offered a hand, a friendly gesture upon meeting someone new. Kalila wasn't so foreign to manners despite her own lax behavior at times.

"I'm Kalila," she introduced, "Valen is my ally though I doubt you'll be hearing much from him. He enjoys his quiet observings."

---- [ x ] ----

The way she reacted to the simple prodding was a tad funny at best. Despite Ayasha's age, there was something of a childlike feel to her. Maybe that's what came from wandering the streets with no one but a wayward shaman to guide her.

Hao had no qualms about it. Given where she might have ended up? It was something of a relief that Ayasha ended up here. Another strong ally was always needed.

"Ah-ha," he laughed lightly, "Forgive me. She acts so protective. I suppose one would only think as such."

These two were naturally protective of one another. That could be useful if they stuck together. If anything, it would no doubt be interesting to see what became of the pair. Ayasha was ironically stronger than Kalila, despite any instance of Ayasha's companion trying to hide it.

Another brief chuckle left him at her grin. For Ayasha, this might have been the biggest event in her life. Given leaving home and traveling for a number of years, she might not have been able to do much.

"I imagine you'll do good things here," he replied, lifting his hand. He patted her head just for a moment before he allowed it to fall back to his side, hidden in his poncho, "But so tiny at that. I hope you'll be safe until the battles begin!"

This woman remained unfazed despite being a newer addition to their forces. Perhaps that was a good thing; being easily caught off guard wasn’t an ideal trait. Mohammad didn’t mention that however, not now. There were other things to indulge in conversationally.

He tipped his head in acknowledgement however. “Perhaps.”

Mohammad blinked as Kalila sat up suddenly, resting on her elbows now. She didn’t seem to mind the fact that his face was so hidden from view. Usually it took people a time or two to get accustomed to it, at least those who were not middle-eastern. Kalila was far too pale to be middle eastern, her accent all wrong.

“I am. They also call me ‘Turbine,’” he answered. “Though my actual name is Mohammad.”

Like the others, she may call him whatever she wished from those options. They were familiar to him, and he responded to all three. Anything more and he might just ignore it however. Two nicknames was more than enough for any one person.

“My ally is Djinn,” Mohammad continued, waving a hand towards the spirit in general.

----[x]----

It was strange to be led by one so calm and young looking. Come to think of it, Ayasha truly didn’t know a lot about Hao. Just asking didn’t seem right and she couldn’t be sure he’d even answer if she did ask. He seemed like the cryptic type when it came to stuff like that. So, she shrugged that away for the time being.

“Well, yeah, I guess that’s true,” Ayasha admitted, almost sheepishly so. She’d been traveling with Kalila for so long that she supposed she’d just gotten used to it all.

Whatever was funny about her Ayasha couldn’t say. Maybe he just liked her attitude but he kept chuckling every so often. Was that a good thing? Ayasha certainly hoped it was. She was part of something bigger than herself, something she couldn’t say had ever happened before. It made her feel proud, wanted even.

Her thoughts scattered as Hao spoke again, reaching out to pat her head. Her face flushed and Ayasha huffed again, attempting to save face. Judging by the amusement on Hao’s face she wasn’t very successful.

“Isn’t there a saying about small packages and all that?” Ayasha pointed out. She swore she could hear Maska chuckling nearby though she didn’t bother to doublecheck.

He didn't push the subject any further than it needed to be. Likewise, she dropped it as well. They didn't know each other or their abilities fully. Only in time would they demonstrate their abilities to one another.

If anything, he was friendly enough. Kalila didn't mind the covered face. Honestly, she'd seen her share of shamans coming from other nations. It was becoming less startling and more interesting.

From the nickname, she assumed he was rather high on the ladder. Kalila had wondered what made him so strong. Eventually, she might find out. For now, she focused on friendlier things.

"'Turbine'?" she echoed, her eyebrow raised. Whoever gave him that one wasn't very creative, "I think I like Chief better. Ah, but it's good to meet you, friend."

Kalila blinked at the large spirit lingering nearby. To think Djinn's actually existed was actually rather interesting. Legends came from some scrap of truth, in the end of things. This was no different.

"Nnnneat," she replied, a grin on her lips, "Spirits can reflect their shamans. I like seeing them. You're is very interesting. I'd like to see what he can do, sometime."

Kalila tugged her legs into an indian style, placing the palms of her hands on her ankles. She straightened her back a little, grinning a little wider. At least now she could offer her own services, just to keep them in mind.

"Ah, and if you need anything from me, just ask. I'll provide all I can," she finally added, finding herself a little excited to see how all of this would end up.

---- [ x ] ----

This girl was the amusing sort. So full of life and want to do something exciting. There were risks, of course, but Ayasha seemed to brush them off easily. Hao wondered if that kind of bravery would last in the shaman fight. This development would be interesting indeed.

Whatever reason that kept her from saying she relied on her friend. Maybe she was at that age when she wanted to do her own thing. Hao had been that age, long ago and he'd seen many like her. This was nothing foreign to him.

"Hmm, well I'm sure you'll both fit in well," he replied after a moment.

From the looks of it, Mohammed was speaking with the other, perhaps interested. He seemed to like knowing who he would be dealing with. If anything, the two looked as if they were getting along fine enough.

Hao's attention turned more fully as Ayasha protested about his previous comment. Her face tinted red and her mind was racing. Hao grinned calmly, finding amusement in her childlike behavior.

"Small packages, huh," he replied lightly, "I suppose we both fit that criteria."

He was tall but not much taller than she was. Ayasha might have pointed that out if her mind hadn't been racing so quickly. It was a little funny, actually.

"Of course, if I was weak I wouldn't have people following me, hmm?" he added after a moment, all too lightly that most people found unsettling.

When he’d mentioned his other nickname she’d shown confusion over it. Was it really that odd an alias? Perhaps it was to her if her reaction was any indication. Mohammad vaguely wondered what she might have chosen instead.

He chuckled and said, “Is that so? Then I will expect nothing less from you.”

Kalila’s attention did not linger long on him when he introduced his spirit. Djinn was a large spirit, green in color with an odd tuft of orange hair. The great genie spirit spared a nod towards Kalila and Valen but nothing further. Mohammad did not think much of Djinn’s silence considering it was rather common, actually.

Sparing a glance at Djinn, Mohammad briefly wondered what she gathered about him from Djinn. Perhaps he might never know. It wasn’t a topic he was entirely fond of drudging up right now when he barely knew her.

“Perhaps you might see in time,” Mohammad answered. He wasn’t about to go displaying his talents at the drop of a hat. Not during the Shaman Tournament at least. “However I will keep your offer in mind.”

This seemed to be enough to keep her complacent for the moment. Perhaps she was the type who enjoyed helping, it would certainly lend credence to any theories as to why she became a healer instead of a fighter. Did she dabble in defensive moves as well? Mohammad supposed he’d glimpse such things in the future if that were the case.

----[x]----

It was a little surprising for Hao to admit that he fit that criterion as well. She supposed that was true though, he was barely taller than her and that poncho hid most of him away anyways. Despite his subtle teasing the fact that it was getting less focused on her helped to cool her face and calm her racing thoughts.

“A-ah? I suppose that’s true!” she agreed.

Even the weakest can lead a group if they are quite charismatic, Maska pointed out. Perhaps he did so to save face for his shaman ally or perhaps he really did want to make that known. Ayasha didn’t know which one was the the truer possibility.

“Maska, please,” Ayasha said. “Don’t be a butt!”

She received a snort in reply though the ram spirit said nothing else, for now. It was difficult to tell when he wanted to be a pain in the butt or not. Sometimes she swore he did it just to give her a break when she was being teased so much. If that was the case Ayasha was always grateful for it.

“Though that’d be an interesting twist for a story or something,” Ayasha admitted.

She earned a chuckle out of him. That was a good step in the right direction, she figured. Some of the other followers seemed so intimidating. That was probably the point though. Being so on her own for many years, having someone approach her was comfortable.

"I'm a simple gal," she answered lightly, "I won't make your life too difficult."

This was the truth for Kalila. She wanted simple things in life. For that reason, she left home. Kalila had been aware that those were mostly selfish means but everyone had to branch out eventually.

'Simple tastes, simple life, simple everything. You know, you could make some things difficult. Like a normal person might.

"Oh boo. You make me sound boring," Kalila chastised her spirit in good humor. Valen only snorted in response.

Kalila's attention turned more fully on him once again. She grinned, happy to hear that he'd at least keep the offer in mind. She liked to help, liked to be useful. This was the biggest way that should could be.

"You do that, friend. I hope to be of a little more use in time," she replied, a friendly grin stretching over her lips.

---- [ x ] ----

Hao chuckled a little. Long before her spirit had spoken, Hao had already heard the wheels in his head turning. The old spirit was wise. Hao respected that. Especially so for allying himself with someone so young.

"Ah, I'll take that into account," Hao replied lightly, "Though, I think I have enough charm to suffice, don't you?"

It was a light prod. In truth, some people were drawn to him for that very reason. That's why Ayasha stood in front of him now, after all. Curiosity and a bit of charm in return went a long way.

"I didn't mean to offend the old ram! I hope I'm not being too forward about what I said!" he continued in good humor.

Honestly, it was a little funny to see such a creature get so huffy. If he had been alive and well, maybe he would have attempted to hit Hao. Now that would have been quite the sight!

Now that she said it, perhaps there was a bit of a story teller in her as well. Getting to know this young woman was going to be entertaining. After all, she was showing that much already.

"A story teller too?" he said, "My, you're a woman of many talents!"

These days, shamans had to be. They either held a job and continued their shamanic practices in secret or became vagabonds, much like Ayasha and Kalila were now. Hao would see to it that a world such as this would never come about again. Shamans were superior, as they should be.

It seemed Kalila was quite pleased with the direction their conversation was going. Mohammad relaxed a little further at that. Being the newest addition to Hao’s group alongside Ayasha made them something of a wild card. It was hard to say if their loyalty was strong or not or if they only came about to protect themselves once Hao’s goals were realized. For now, however, Mohammad shook such thoughts aside.

Valen seemed to see the need to prod his shaman ally. Mohammad chuckled again. Simple girl, was she? It seemed she had not been lying about that.

“Perhaps to some you might be,” Mohammad pointed out. “Though in time I am sure I might find a quirk or two in you that incites some interest.”

For a moment Mohammad wasn’t sure how Kalila took that. Was she confused? She certainly seemed baffled for a second there or maybe she was flattered. Mohammad didn’t think too much about it for the moment. Small talk was a nice thing every so often, even if it was spent prodding the newbie.

“There will be plenty of time until we arrive in Patch Village I’d imagine,” he further added.

----[x]----

Hao didn’t seem to mind Maska’s comment perhaps he even welcomed it. The old ram spirit didn’t just talk to anyone. Most times he was fairly content with just being near Ayasha or doing his own thing as it was. Perhaps the years as a spirit had tempered a feistier attitude but this was how Ayasha knew the spirit now.

As predicted, Maska only huffed in answer and turned away, busying himself with keeping an eye on Muna and Tawa. The two were bickering over something though Ayasha couldn’t say what. Until it grew too heated she didn’t see a need to stop the little lambs from going at it.

“Eh?” She blinked. Was it that obvious she dabbled in writing a lot? Or, rather, that she’d been pushed to succeed in both it and artwork by an overbearing mother? “Uh, just a rookie, actually…”

Or, that’s what she’d been told over and over again. Winning in writing competitions was the goal, it made her parents forget she was able to see and converse with spirits—it had been what she’d strived for when she was small, if only for her family’s love.

Ayasha could feel Maska’s eyes on her then. He most likely recalled those years of silently remaining at Ayasha’s side while she wrote and drew tirelessly to try to get better than everyone else.

Valen seemed to only pop into the conversation when he felt it was needed. For the moment, he was silent once again, merely observing. There were many shamans littering the area still. Several had left to locate the Patch Village.

Her attention was drawn back to him when he chuckled once more. He seemed to relax, something a of a relief to Kalila. There was no reason for things to get strained, especially so when she was already aware that others might not view them favorably. They were low ranking within the group.

Kalila blinked, taken aback by his playful words. For a moment, she had thought that maybe that was a subtle form of flirting. Kalila decided not to read too much into it, instead sparing another smile.

"I'm sure you will," she replied lightly, "though I'm afraid I might disappoint. I'm not all that interesting."

Kalila was merely a vagabond. Any hobbies she might have had, she gave up long ago. She wouldn't trade the life of travel however. This was always something she wanted to do.

"Though, like you said, we'll have plenty of time. That is if you don't mind a simply girl prodding you here and there," she added after a few beats.

---- [ x ] ----

Her spirit ally didn't say anything in return. Perhaps the old thing didn't care to banter too often. Hao had encountered the sort before. Some spirits were simply too stuffy for their own good. Still, the ram remained nearby, as if remaining vigilant of the goings on.

Ayasha's reaction wasn't so much of a surprise to him. Her mind was whirling already with thoughts of only momentarily proud parents and back to worse memories. She had a difficult life. Many shamans now did.

Hao wasn't so kind as to brush that away however. Testing her own resolve would be a little fun. Even as her ram friend was eyeing the both of them now, Hao didn't seem to care. Instead, he plowed right on, "Ah, I'm sure you would have done well. That is, if you hadn't left home."

It was subtle enough. The prod didn't exactly push the buttons of her parents but it was still a raw spot. Ayasha was forced from home. It was a desperate act simply to save herself.

"Now, now, don't give me that look," he chastised calmly, "You're not the only shaman who's ever experienced being run out, after all."

Even if what Hao had said was true, that didn't calm her any less. There was a fire brewing in her. That anger was apparent on her face. This was an interesting reaction indeed, if not a little predictable. Hao found himself interested in what she'd do next.

However she’d taken his words she responded amicably enough. For the moment she might just be worried about fitting in with this group and making a niche of her own, many did at first. Hao was a powerful shaman and catching his attention was favorable more times than not.

“I will judge for myself, if it’s all the same to you,” Mohammad answered amicably. He’d rather learn firsthand than through the brush she painted herself with. It would be better that way after all.

He spared a nod, indicating that he did not mind so much for the time being. It would be some time before things really kicked off in this tournament after all which would leave them all with plenty of time to get to know one another and perhaps gain or lose followers. Only time would tell.

Mohammad had opened his mouth to answer again when a loud crack caused him to stop short, his head swiveling around quickly to glimpse the source of the sound. Almost immediately he rose to full height, brow furrowed and wary of what would happen once he’d registered what the sound had been.

The silence around them all was deafening, all eyes on Hao and Ayasha. Mohammad wasn’t sure what to expect now, tense because of it. What had happened and why had Hao not done anything in retaliation yet?

----[x]----

Ayasha truthfully wasn’t sure what she had expected. Perhaps for the topic to be dropped and bypassed entirely? It was the most common way of dealing with those things, especially between shamans who so often shared such pasts. Maybe that was why Hao’s prodding was so startling at first.

She blinked, a moment passing before hot anger began to course through her. Who was he to make light of her past? It wasn’t like she’d just stopped though she didn’t exactly keep anything she started or finished since meeting and traveling with Kalila.

Whatever he thought of her change in mood he didn’t stop, instead choosing to chide her about her reaction. Ayasha’s mind whirled. Many might have shared her past but that didn’t lessen what had happened to her either. What right did he have to act so callously about it?! He didn’t have any kind of right to go saying anyone’s experiences were lessened because of it!

It felt like minutes but had to be only seconds at most as her mind had whirled in anger before she’d done anything. Without another thought Ayasha lashed out, slapping Hao hard across the face. The sound seemed to be all that was needed to quiet everyone in the immediate area and the feeling of eyes on her was highly prevalent. It was hardly noticeable compared to the stinging from her hand and the hot anger in her chest.

Maska was the one to break the silence. My, it’s been years since Ayasha’s temper has been triggered like this.

She couldn't help but chuckle a little at his pressing for deciding for himself. Kalila didn't mind that at all. If he wanted to take the time, she didn't mind. Having companions and friends before the Shaman Fights would be best.

"Well, I won't stop you," she replied to him.

For a moment, it seemed like he was going to speak once again. Before he could carry on the conversation, they were all silenced by a loud crack. Kalila raised her head, immediately becoming aware of what happened.

Her heart hammered hard against her chest. Eyes were all on Hao and Ayasha. This was going immediately against what Kalila had planned for this group. Hao wasn't doing anything now but what about later? What about his other followers? Would they hold this against Ayasha?

Kalila pushed herself to her feet, brushing passed Mohammed with a quick apology. Ayasha hadn't lashed out this bad for a while now. She had done the same to Kalila for a short time when they first met. Kalila was always patient with her. Maybe she could calm the young woman down now as she had done back then.

---- [ x ] ----

There was so much anger in her. It was like a pot trying to boil over, spilling it's contents everywhere. The anger had risen so quickly that it should have been a surprise. Ayasha had quite a bit of buried feelings. After so many years, it seemed they had risen again.

For a moment, he didn't expect her to do anything. Leave him, talk with Kalila, wander off, all of these things had gone through her mind. Instead, she raised a hand and struck him hard.

Hao's cheek burned and stung. All around them, there was silence. Mind whirled but no one verbally spoke. He could see Ayasha's friend rise to her feet, brushing passed Mohammed. The color looked drained from her face.

This really was turning out to be quite amusing.

"A-Ayasha..." Kalila reached out, touching her friends shoulder, "You can't do things like that...please, apologize."

Hao couldn't help but chuckle at that. Kalila forced such a wary, polite smile, trying to remain friendly. Ayasha seemed to want to lash out again. Before Hao allowed that, he put a stop to such a heavy air.

"Apologize?" he echoed lightly, "I haven't been hit like that since my mother! Anyone who's brave enough to do this deserves a place at my side!"

Even after that, Kalila still looked stunned. She had looked at him, baffled by what he had just said. Her jaw hung open briefly as if to say something. Eventually she did push some words out;
"I'm sorry, what?"

Hao only laughed in response. This was too amusing. Who knew accepting these two girls would be such a fun time!

What had happened and what was going to happen? Mohammad and the others could only wait even as Kalila hurried to Ayasha’s side and prodded her to apologize. No one else seemed to want to move or say anything, perhaps in wariness of what Hao might do.

It seemed it was all unfounded however.

’What is going on?’ The thought didn’t seem to have an answer, at least not for now. Mohammad could only stand and watch for the time being, perhaps hope for the best as well. It all seemed like it could go either way even as Kalila had brushed passed him in a hurry to Ayasha’s side.

For the time being he would wait and see what transpired, just as the others were.

----[x]----

Ayasha didn’t think much about the deafening silence that had followed or the feeling of all those eyes on her. Perhaps it helped that Maska did not seem worried, perhaps even indulgent in her anger as always. Muna and Tawa were nearby, creeping up behind her and perhaps trying to remain out of view as if any retaliation from Hao might spill over to affect them as well.

Kalila and Opacho were the first to react, the former coming to Ayasha’s side and trying to prod her into apologizing while the latter had tears spring to her eyes and looked about ready to freak out. Already Kalila was urging Ayasha to apologize though it would be a futile attempt to. A leader Hao might be but he’d crossed a line and she wasn’t going to let him get away with it!

She’d had just enough time to fold her arms over her chest before Hao beat her to saying anything, his voice light and a large smile spreading across his lips. This was enough to diffuse or at least dull a good portion of Ayasha’s anger, her brow furrowing at this. Arms crossed, she wasn’t sure what to make of Hao’s claim. It didn’t seem like anyone did.

Ooooh, I think Mister Hao likes abuse! Tawa crowed from behind Ayasha.

Folding her arms, Ayasha eyed Hao curiously. The anger might have dulled a little by this odd reaction but she was still quite agitated and wasn’t entirely willing to let it go just yet. “You’re the kind of guy who’s into mild BDSM, aren’t you?”

This seemed to be all that needed to be said to cause Maska to roar with laughter, a sound Ayasha hadn’t heard in quite awhile.

It was clear that Ayasha wasn't going to apologize. Whatever had been said between them must have struck a raw nerve. Kalila didn't even want to ask what it might have been. She was mostly concerned about what the others might think of the both of them now.

That concern was quashed almost immediately when Hao spoke again. He was laughing, laughing at what had been done and said. Hao almost seemed to like the idea that someone was brave enough to stand up to him. Was that what he was looking for?

It didn't help that now Ayasha's two small spirits were getting into it now too. Valen quieted them quickly, appearing near Kalila's side.

'Enough out of you! You're not helping!'

Kalila opened her mouth to respond once again when Ayasha went on about something else too. Something about BDSM! How did she learn about that?! Kalila's face warmed considerable at the very thought!

"Who told you about that!" she asked, placing a hand over her mouth as if that would quash her embarrassment.

Hao found himself giddier than usual. This was entertaining, this was fun. He hadn't felt this way in a long time. Perhaps prodding Ayasha had been a good thing! Hao had merely wanted to see what she would do. This was far beyond what he had ever expected!

"Now that's just dirty," he replied lightly, "Unless you've been prone to such things, hmm?"

The way she had gone straight to that kind of option was almost comical. He was well aware that she had known about these things. Being so bold as to say them out loud, even as her older friend seemed bashful about it, was hilarious.

"My, my, I'm glad I picked you two up," he prodded lightly, "You're so entertaining."

Hao had meant what he said however. He was very interested in Ayasha now, more so than he had been before. She was bold and strong. That was what he needed in the end of things. A bold, strong woman by his side would be idle for the new world.

From the corner of her eye Ayasha could spot Kalila growing bewildered by Hao’s response. Truthfully, Ayasha hadn’t exactly expected him to laugh either and see being slapped as a good thing. Still, Kalila was worrying over nothing now it seemed. That was good; Ayasha didn’t have any plans to apologize for slapping him.

She could hear Valen chiding Tawa for chipping in and for Maska’s laughter though the old ram did not appear to hear Valen’s scolding. Both buck and ram were old spirits and so did not particularly defer to either. Still, the spirits had grown silent seconds later.

“What? Am I supposed to be ignorant forever?” Ayasha pointed out simply, clearly not bothering to explain where she’d learned such things. Curiosity and a bit of research went a long way after all. She shook her head at Hao’s prodding. Even if she was she wasn’t going to go admitting it out loud in front of all these other shamans and their spirits. “Like I’m going to admit to what I prefer in front of everyone.”

Kalila’s face was bright red now, a funny thing actually considering this had little to do with her and more so with Ayasha. Or maybe it was ‘cause Kalila was so modest. Had she even kissed anyone? Ayasha realized she’d never really known if her older sister had even been with anyone before they’d met.

She shook the thought away. It wasn’t any of her business anyways. Instead she raised an eyebrow at Hao’s comment. He seemed glad to keep such company. Well, who was she to judge?

“Well, now I know I can get away with slapping you if you’re too much of a jerk,” she pointed out simply.

The banter was certainly interesting. Ayasha's own mood seemed to stabilize back into something more normal. Hao found that a tad disappointing. Over time, he might find more quirks about her. It would certainly be interesting to try.

"Everyone must grow up sometime," Hao pointed out lightly, "Though it seems Kalila might be still be rather...immature, hmmm?"

Her face seemed to warm all together again. Hao chuckled, easily brushing off the rest of it. No need to cause anymore trouble that was already been had. He'd learned enough for the time being. At least now, he had an idea of what Ayasha was like.

"I'm just...I'll leave it lay at that," Kalila responded. She shuffled awkwardly, her attention drawn elsewhere so she wouldn't have to face either of them, "As long as there's no more trouble..."

What Ayasha had done really startled her. It startled everyone. Now that they were aware things were more or less fine, less eyes were on them. If anyone gave Ayasha trouble, he would put a stop to it. He found he wanted to remain rather close to the young woman.

"Ah, you're welcome to try!" he teased in response, "Though I doubt you'll be able to manage to strike me a second time."

The first had been enough. It had satisfied him and shown Ayasha's resolve. He wouldn't allow it to happen once again.

Kalila’s face was beat red when she hurried away, mumbling something about things being all right now. Valen had soon followed though Ayasha’s own spirits remained near her side, perhaps more curious now of Hao and why she had slapped him so hard.

Ayasha watched her go for a moment before commenting on Hao’s jerkish behavior. She was still greatly agitated by the comment before though now that she’d slapped him so hard she felt a little better about it all. The stinging in her hand was an oddly nice feeling in tandem with her previous anger and the lingering irritation. For now she’d try to let that slide though it might be a little difficult not to be at least passive aggressive here and there until ebbed entirely.

“We’ll see,” she noted simply, perhaps a challenge sparking from that claim. That was assuming he angered her enough to warrant another smack however. “I never said when I’d be slapping you if it happened again.”

Still, this was a strange turn of events. Had he just been goading her on a few minutes ago? The thought didn’t sit very well with Ayasha though she tried to ignore it for now.

Is… everything okay now…? Muna wondered from behind Ayasha. Perhaps the commotion had worried the little lamb.

----[x]----

Mohammad wasn’t sure what to make of this strange new development. To think that Master Hao was someone who enjoyed being slapped as such! He shook his head at that thought. No matter his thoughts on the matter that seemed to be the case and Ayasha and Kalila were to remain here.

He gestured towards Kalila as she returned, red-faced and a little more than just awkward now. “A strange turn of events, is it not?” he offered. Perhaps a bit of small talk might take her mind off of things for now.

From the looks of it Kalila did not quite know what to say. Her thoughts were most likely racing or perhaps she was just shocked at what had happened. Truthfully, Mohammad was still bewildered as well though questioning Master Hao would do no one any good. If that’s what he desired in a follower who were they to question it?

“It is not so bad now, is it?” he further pointed out. “Nothing serious has been done however startling.”

Perhaps it was not this that bothered Kalila now but the curious information her apparent sister had held. Though Mohammad could not pretend to know how their relationship was it might appear as if the younger was actually most knowledgable in curious affairs. A strange twist indeed.

Things were calming down now. Some of the members within his folds were moving about, whispering to each other. Kalila wandered off back to Mohammed who had waited, perhaps wondering what might happen. That only left Hao and Ayasha once more.

For a moment, she merely watched him, as if studying what he might do next. Hao found himself in a good mood. He wouldn't do anymore than he already had. Surely he'd prodded her enough for the day. The strike had proven that enough.

"Haha, my you sure are confident!" Hao answered, "I quite like that. Perhaps I'll keep you close, hmm?"

There were only a chosen few who remained close to his side. Opacho had been one of them. Mohammed was often reporting to him. They were the most trusted he had. Ayasha might turn into another one. Hao certainly wouldn't mind that at all.

Her little spirit spoke, asking hesitantly if things were alright. Hao chuckled a little. It really hadn't been that bad in the first place. Of course, some of his other followers would have thought otherwise.

"Everything is fine, little one," he answered, "There was no harm in the first place apart from hurt feelings."

---- [ x ] ----

Kalila rubbed the back of her hand over her mouth. Her face still felt hot. There was nothing that she could do about that for the time being. Eventually, it would cool again. For the moment, her ears burned with embarrassment. To think she'd be heckled by a sixteen year old and Ayasha.

Kalila blinked up at Mohammed when he motioned to her, speaking in a manner to provide comfort. If anything, he was right. She was relieved that nothing more came out of what Ayasha had done.

"I guess I'm still trying to let that sink in..." she replied after a moment, "It almost seemed like I wasn't sure what happened."

Ayasha hadn't gotten that angry in a long while. She had been the shaky, wary sort when she was younger. Understandably, it took a long time to open up. Whatever Hao had said really shook her. Kalila was a little curious as to what it might have been.

"Anyways, it could have been worse. I'm just glad it wasn't," she added after a moment.

Kalila did want to ensure that Ayasha was safe here. If Hao had gotten angry, Ayasha might have been thrown out of the group. Naturally Kalila would have followed. She was just happy none of that had happened in the end of things.

Ayasha wasn’t sure what Hao meant by keep her close yet but she supposed in time she’d find out, assuming he followed through on that. For all she knew he might have just been trying to tease her again. She resisted a sigh at that thought.

“Riiight…”

The topic was averted for the time being as Muna spoke up, wondering about the situation in a whole. Hao was quick to reassure the little lamb that all was well though Ayasha huffed. Hurt feelings… more like belittling them as well. It sounded too innocent when Hao explained it the way he did.

O-Oh! Okay then… Muna relented, head canted to one side.

C’mon, Muna, don’t be so timid! Jeez, Tawa chided only to be quickly shushed by Maska. Any bickering between the two wasn’t needed right now.

“Which you still have yet to apologize for!” she pointed out. “Well?”

She waited further then, noting that Hao still seemed highly amused by everything. There was still quite the red mark over his cheek as well though it seemed to be fading a little now. Ayasha folded her arms over her chest as she waited, scowling at Hao as he took his time to answer.

----[x]----

He nodded as Kalila answered, still looking quite bewildered even now. Perhaps she’d remain that way for some time until things had truly settled down. Though the remaining shamans of Hao’s followers were back to focusing on their own conversations and problems they were probably still curious and confused. It would be some time before things truly settled down again.

“It seems that is the case for many of us,” Mohammad admitted. “Quite the show, if you’d call it one.”

A shake of the head followed this. Perhaps dwelling on it would do them no good. For the time being he could focus on calming her down a little further. Flustered shamans rarely were able to think and act rationally after all.

“Perhaps you might share what you take to in terms of hobbies?” he wondered instead.

From the corner of his eye he spotted Djinn nearby. He seemed to be keeping a vigilant eye out. A good habit to have, especially in a spirit ally when a shaman might otherwise be preoccupied. If anything was spotted by Djinn Mohammad would be the first to know.

Ayasha didn't seem to amused at the thought of keeping her close. He chuckled lightly at that. Perhaps she believed it to be another joke. Hao had different intentions on that than just a mere jest. She'd see in time.

He didn't mention it for now. The conversation went elsewhere, her spirits more interested in what had happened than anyone else for the time being. The one was cautious while the other seemed rather abrasive. It was a little interesting to see the two personalities.

"Cute spirits," he pointed out lightly, "I find they might just reflect their shaman."

It very much seemed that was the case. Seeing the spirits that followed their partners was always somewhat interesting. In some sense, they did reflect the people they were allied to. At least, in his opinion that was the case.

"Ah, I should apologize?" he taunted lightly. Hao then pointed at his smarted cheek lightly, "Perhaps we could call it even?"

It was just another light prod. If an apology satisfied her, than he would eventually get around to it. Ayasha very much seemed like the stubborn type. He was sure she would continue to to ride him about it until she got what she wanted.

---- [ x ] ----

If anything, he understood the situation had been strange. It wasn't just her at this point. Everything that had happened, quick as it was, seemed to catch everyone off guard. What Hao said and reacted afterward seemed to leave bewilderment in all of them.

"As long as everything is fine," she replied to him.

Kalila didn't want anything want rocky beginnings. Some of the members still might not take well to them regardless of Hao's own words. Mohammed's spirit ally seemed to keep an eye out just in case.

He changed the subject, perhaps to calm her down a little more. Hobbies were something she didn't often practice. Life wandering didn't leave a lot of room to actually keep things on them.

Kalila scratched her cheek as she thought about things that she did over the years. There were some that she could easily give him. At least that would keep the conversation going.

"Ah, well. I don't have many anymore, being on the road for so long. When I can, I've picked up a book or two as we've traveled. Likewise, I've quite the penchant for star gazing or listening to music. I've been wandering about four years now, so I more or less pick up things here and there as I go."

Ayasha blinked at Hao’s compliment. Behind her she could hear Muna and Tawa whispering to each other though their words were hard to make out. For the time being they were behaving and that’s what mattered—perhaps they only did so because of Maska’s watchful eye. If he’d intended to distract her for the moment it worked, if only a little bit.

“Huh?” A second or so passed before she shook her head. “Uh, yeah, I guess…”

That only begged the question of what he gathered of her from Muna, Tawa and Maska. All three had varying personalities and though Hao had only seem them once or twice now he surely had to have picked up on that. Ayasha might ask later, if it bothered her enough. For now it was a fleeting thought.

Hao didn’t seem too bothered by Ayasha’s demand for an apology. Instead he’d merely offered to call things even considered he’d gotten smacked pretty hard. Ayasha wasn’t very moved by this ploy of his.

“What, even? I smacked you for being insensitive, that doesn’t alleviate the ‘emotional duress’ your jerky little comment put me through, you know,” she argued from the top of her head. Kalila had always said she’d been good at winging it and rolling with it, Ayasha supposed that was true.

Maska snorted. You’re as full of it as ever, girl.

“Of course I am, it’s how I win all the time! I’ll just wear my opponent down with nonsense.” A pause followed. “So, you going to apologize or what?”

----[x]----

Mohammad nodded his agreement and left it at that. If Hao preferred Ayasha remain and even enjoyed her presence here then who were they to question it? The most they could do was move on and accept it. It would be better that way at least.

Instead of dwelling on such things he instead changed the subject though it seemed the topic might have been an odd one for her. The silence and thoughtful look that crossed her face was enough to tell him before she’d even answered at first. Still, he was a little curious and assuming she was strong enough to remain among them all and progress through the tournament he might as well know her better. So, he waited patiently for her to rattle off what she enjoyed doing. Though she claimed not to have much she did give a bit of a detailed list, giving him a bit of insight to who she was.

“I see. An interesting list if nothing else,” he answered politely. “I cannot say that I have as many hobbies myself.”

Mostly he fought, whether for himself or to protect the weak it didn’t matter. It was interesting to see what others indulged in sometimes however. Perhaps he might pick up a thing or two himself along the travel to Patch Village. Mohammad supposed it all depended on the circumstances really.

“Or maybe you will pick up another or so along the way,” Mohammad continued.

The two little spirits were whispering to each other. What they said wasn't so much hidden from Hao. Try as they might, there was another way he heard things. The ability to read minds was something very few shared. It was an advantage and yet, much like a curse as well.

What she had to say wasn't much. For a moment, Ayasha only seemed awkward about it. She brushed it off rather easily, if anything. He found she managed to do that quite easily.

Eventually, she focused on the apology at hand. Instead to doing as he'd asked, she argued against it. That took a lot of confidence. More and more, he found himself intrigued by this woman. Did she not know what fear was?

"Ah, ha! You certainly are a brave one!" he teased in response.

Any one of those who stood beside him would not question his motives. After all, they were well aware it took someone very powerful to lead this group. Hao had demonstrated his ability. They natural held a healthy respect and fear for him. Yet, she seemed to brush all that aside for her own favor.

"It seems as if you've gotten this thing down very well, if your spirit is correct," he replied lightly, "To think, you might be so bold as to get an apology out of me? Now that would be something to behold!"

He motioned to her then, a smile stretching across his lips before he continued; "Fine, if it pleases you, I apologize for what I said. Are you happy now?"

Kalila smiled politely, brushing a bit of stray hair out of her face. The beanie always seemed to be on her head, so much so that she sometimes forgot about it. She didn't remember when she got it, probably long since forgotten after she left home.

If anything, he was interested. Maybe taking the chance to learn about the others was a good thing. If this promised world was to come about, why not? Shamans would be all they had, much like the world today.

"There's always time to pick up one or two," she agreed, "Surely you've occupied yourself with something before, right?"

Kalila couldn't imagine what it would be like without something to do. Even traveling long distances on foot most of the time, she always made a point to enjoy something when she and Ayasha were in bigger cities. There was always something they offered.

"I might, if I ever decide to stop wandering," she replied, "It's given me a purpose. I suppose I was satisfied enough up til these Shaman Fights started."

Even more so than ever, her own purpose might be helpful to a great cause. Kalila felt that it was important, an honor to be serving during these times.

The teasing was back. Did anything ever faze Hao? Ayasha was beginning to think that there wasn’t but then it wasn’t like she knew him too well yet either. He could be either lightening the mood or just picking on her some more. Ayasha tried not to dwell on that too much.

“Yeah, I’m a regular dare devil,” she retorted simply, if only to further conversation. Ayasha had to admit that Hao’s response to being slapped so hard was a little intriguing after all.

For the moment that too was pushed to the back of her mind as the topic moved on. Hao really didn’t seem to mind much of anything. Ayasha sighed as he all but rambled rather cheerily about her ‘skill’ in arguing and wearing people down. It came with the territory she thought. It wasn’t like Kalila and she had it easy traveling from town to town after all.

She heaved a sigh, uncertain as to what to say or think. One second he was going on about how it would be a ‘sight to see’ if she did get an apology from him and then he was saying sorry! It was enough to throw a girl off balance.

As such, Ayasha gave a wary smile and said, “Yeah. Sure. Fuzzy warm feelings all around.”

----[x]----

She seemed to be recovering her bearings now though that was perhaps only thanks to the distraction of conversation. If that was the case then Mohammad would not remind her of the odd little scene they’d all been witness to. It might just be best to forget and leave things lie as they were.

He shifted his weight to one foot, nodding as she spoke. Kalila seemed to have a habit of fussing with her hair and hat, he’d noticed it even when they’d first been brought into the fold of Hao’s followers.

“Perhaps a I have, a time or two at least,” he admitted. Picking up something and giving it a try at least once was admirable. Whether or not he stuck with it was always the question at hand however.

There was a brief pause before Kalila was speaking again, admitting to perhaps finding new hobbies if she settled after the Shaman Tournament was finished. Mohammad had to wonder about that. They were all fighting for Hao in this group but she and Ayasha—would they try to turn away later on, when the finals were at a close? It was hard to say and Mohammad worried a little of it even as he reminded himself that Hao managed to find and keep good company about him.

“It is something to think about at least,” Mohammad pointed out.

Ayasha really was someone interesting. He quite found he liked almost right away. Hao made a good decision, allowing she and her friend into this group. What Kalila sought here was protection in the end. That allowed him full loyalty on her part. He was sure they both would stick around.

"Then you'll certainly be fine around here," he replied lightly, "I can only hope for more interesting developments as we near the Patch Village."

Many had already gone searching. Even now, those who lingered nearby seemed to be picking up what little belongs they had, namely weapons, to get on the road. The group was thinning out. Those who found the village and made it through the trials would remain by him.

Hao laughed lightly at her response. Warm, fuzzy feelings? Was that right? The sarcasm was thick in her voice. Ayasha certainly was a brave woman. Regardless, he reached out, patting her head once again.

"Warm fuzzy feelings, hmm? Well, perhaps that's a good thing," he taunted lightly, "But perhaps we should keep those for another time. It may be time to start moving."

They had three months to get there. Hao intended to arrive within days. That would be an advantage, especially so knowing that Yoh and his group might arrive later. He wanted to test his other half. This would provide the best opportunity.

---- [ x ] ----

His answers were simple ones. Kalila felt he was more interested in studying her mannerism as of the moment than anything else. Maybe he was trying to get in her head, figure out just why someone like her would want to join Hao. It was simple, really, though she wouldn't admit it out loud.

Kalila spared a simple nod in response. There wasn't much on the subject. Perhaps delving into the past was something he'd rather avoid. Shamans commonly didn't have the happiest stories. That's what left a lot of them so bitter.

"Ah, well, it's a long time away," she finally replied, "I'll worry about it when the time comes around."

At the given moment, Kalila worried most about the fights to come. She managed on her own for a long time, relying on self healing and defensive tactics. Who knew what other shamans would be like. Kalila had already seen many strong ones flocking for the shaman tournament.

It was a subject that was left lay for the time being. Hao seemed eager to move, having dismissed the previous happenings. Kalila might have worried for their well being but for the moment, at least she knew they were safe in the fold.
