Kalila shifted her weight, watching the waves crash onto the beach. Hao and the others had long since been whisked away by the Patch for the final fights. Hao was going to win. The Great Spirit would be his. It was already foreseen.

Still, so much had happened. The fights that took place were more like slaughter fests. A barrage of normal humans tried to invade this place. Even Peyote, so loyal to Hao, had turned on them, slaughtering nearly everyone in the group.

Mohammed had been one among those slaughtered. So close to him, Kalila hadn't allowed death to take him away. She revived him long after Peyote had killed himself. It was the one gift Hao had graced her with. The ability to bring the dead back to their bodies was a great one.

Now they could only wait. Some who had allied themselves with Hao still seemed sore about the entire thing. Hao had strung them along for years and, as such, didn't seem quite fond of him anymore. Kalila worried about what would happen to them after all was said and done. Would they survive when Hao returned?

"Too much to worry about," she finally muttered, sitting herself down on the sand. To think, everyone was sitting around barbecuing. The one man, she heard his name was Miki or something like that, had gathered them at the beach. It was honestly a little strange.

Waiting around was a little unnerving. Even Ayasha stood about, fidgeting far too often than normal. There was some deep relationship that she had with Hao. It was mostly private so Kalila respected that. To see Ayasha so nervous however was strange.

"I wonder how much longer it's going to take," she muttered, leaning back on her hands. Simple days waited ahead. Kalila couldn't wait for them to get here.

Mohammad remained, as many did, at the shores to await the victor of the Shaman Tournament. Even as some took part in some merriment, barbequing as they were, there were others who were lost in thought, unnerved and perhaps feeling a bit lost about it all. Mohammad was equal parts unnerved and lost, brought back from death by Kalila had been one thing but to see Master Hao as they all had…

He shook his head, glancing towards the one who’d rescued him from death, in a sense. She was off on her own, as a great handful of them were. Perhaps gathering together was just too much for some of them, Mohammad included. There was just too much to dwell on as it was.

For now all they could do was wait and piece everything together in the meantime. Perhaps preparations might be in order as well, depending on whom the victor ultimately ended up being… Mohammad wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the tournament anymore after all.

The days that would pass were ones that left him anxious, even tense. All they could do was wait and the waiting was the worst. Still, at least there were those here that Mohammad did know, those he could speak to. Kalila was a great help, distracting him from his worrying thoughts, though he did not miss the way she fretted over her younger companion from time to time.

Still, there was nothing they could do but wait, even then.

----[x]----

It was all so much to take in that even the days that had passed in silence as they waited and watched were not enough to sort it all out. Try as they might, her spirits had been little help on that endeavor as well. For the most part Ayasha had grown quiet, even a little fidgety during the wait. Even Maska’s wisdom and advice did little to settle her.

Could they expect Hao to fulfill his promises or were they in store for more of a bloodbath? Ayasha didn’t know, no one did, and that thought left her wary and a little frightened. The fear that settled in her, knotting up her insides and filling her with an icy cold she didn’t like, were rather unfamiliar to her… It hadn’t taken long to decide she didn’t like these feelings at all.

“Please, just… come back safely,” she’d muttered at one point.

And so, with her spirits to keep her company Ayasha could only wait for the results of the tournament to somehow be announced. The only question was how that would go about happening…

How many days had passed? They couldn't do much. It was a strange thing, waiting around. No one was really settled. A few had spoken with those who were 'enemies' not just days ago. In some sense, that might have been comforting for them.

Eventually, she got up and sat near Mohammed, wrapping her arms around her knees. It was strange to see so many so unsettled. Those who allied themselves with Hao were always so confident. Now, they were a shell of themselves.

"Are you afraid as everyone else is?" she inquired if only for a bit of conversation. Kalila needed to know. She didn't want her own fears to be unfound or considered strange.

It had been clear that was the case. Mohammed hadn't been as talkative. No one really was. Kalila tried to keep her own chin up, providing distractions if she could. She really did care about him so, this was the best thing she knew to do.

"I pray this doesn't get much worse..." she muttered quietly, resting her chin in between the crock of her knees.

As if to taunt her completely, the ground began to shake. The seas waves crashed against the shore, unsettled by some invisible force. Birds quickly fled from trees. Kalila's heart skipped a beat, taking hold of Mohammed's harm to steady herself.

"What's happening?" the words slipped out of her mouth, her heart pounding hard against her rib cage. Had the Great Spirit finally chosen it's winner?

---- [ x ] ----

Power. Hao had the power he needed. He had taken the throne, the Great Spirit had chosen him. He would purge the world of humans and bring a new world forward. A world of shamans and of peace. This was for the best. Humans were destroying it. They had no reason to remain here.

The eleven hours he'd spent in solitude were not wasted. The Great Spirit had given him knowledge far beyond any one persons comprehension. With this knowledge and power, he would bring a new world forth.

It was the beach were he found many of those who allied themselves with him. Among them were his parents and the parents of the other younger shamans. They had all been waiting for something to happen.

"My, my, quite the gathering," Hao started, a small smile on his lips, "I see many of you have made it back. My apologies. I should have warned you about Peyote's intentions but...Well, there were bigger problems to attend to."

That smarted some of them. Hao could feel it very easily. It was true, he mostly considered them expendable. Of course, now that the world was going to be purged of humans, it was only natural for shamans to survive. A new race needed to come forth.

Hao raised a hand, waving specifically more so to Ayasha. Of all people, she still had an amount of faith in him, "Forgive me for scaring you, my dear! It's all said and done. I am the new King and as I said, I will do as promised. This world will be purged of humans."

They should expect nothing less. A new kingdom would rise. Hao would be a savior, go down in history as such. This was for the best. This is what needed to happen.

Mohammad blinked, turning to glimpse Kalila as she sat beside him. Her spirit was nowhere to be seen, perhaps hidden within a memorial tablet to rest. His own was keeping an eye on the distance, perhaps eager to let Mohammad know of anything coming in from a distance. If nothing else it might give them all some foresight if Djinn spotted something.

He mulled over the question for moment before nodding. He couldn’t deny it; he didn’t think anyone really could. Apprehension fluttered through everyone as they waited. “I am, yes.”

Folding his hands over his lap he stared at them intently. From the corner of his eye he spotted Kalila resting her chin atop her knees, looking forlorn. There was great cause for it. Would Hao follow through with his promises or not? The thought that they’d all been tricked stung deeply when so many of them had fought and given their all for his cause.

“We’ll only be able to wait and see at this rate,” he muttered.

Anything more had been cut across, the ground shaking immensely and nearly toppling him right over. His hand reached out to grasp Kalila’s shoulder, as if to steady her when he couldn’t even keep himself upright. It looked like they wouldn’t need to wait long to find out however. It seemed like in no time it had stopped and there was Hao, looking quite content amongst them all…

----[x]----

The quaking had sent Ayasha toppling to the ground, scrapping her hands and possibly bruising her thigh though none of that mattered. She’d manage to push herself back up, waving away Muna and Tawa’s concerned questions. It had grown deathly quiet after all, drawing all eyes to the long-haired boy who’d arrived with a smile on his face.

His words hardly soothed over stung feelings though that didn’t seem to be his intention anyways. In fact, Ayasha was even a little surprised he’d stopped to greet any of them here; she had figured if he’d won he’d get straight to whatever he’d had planned first…

“A-ah?” She blinked, more than a little startled that he was addressing her right in front of all of these other shamans. If any had taken to muttering amongst themselves Ayasha didn’t really hear any of it. She might still be conflicted on eradicating all humans, despite the way it would help the earth recover from their damage to it, but she still had fought for that cause…

She walked towards him without a word though once she was close enough Ayasha reached out to slap him, hard. Whether or on the did anything to stop her slap, Ayasha was jut as quick to throw her arms around his neck, burying her face into the large cowl of his poncho.

“Dumb jerk,” she huffed, voice muffled.

Kalila was thankful that he'd reached out, steadying her a little. The quake was violent, sending most of the others onto their sides or falling right over completely. Did the Great Spirit truly have this much power? To move the Earth's crusts. It was amazing!

"I'm okay, thank you Mohammed," she stated, glancing at him. Concerned marred his face, not only for her but for the situation as well.

Her gaze soon found Hao. What he had to say wasn't so much of a surprise. He had been out to destroy humanity and many of those who allied with him agreed. Most of them had seen much cruelty from humans. Mohammed had eventually told her stories of his time as a mercenary. Naturally, this solution just seemed better for everyone.

Now that it was becoming reality? It was more than just frightening.

Before any questions could even be asked, Ayasha was on her feet and rushing toward Hao. An audible slap broke the ice before she hugged him. The pair were a strange couple, if Kalila let herself admit.

"Well...that's one way to go about things," Kalila muttered, pushing herself to her feet, "So that's it then? Armageddon for everyone who's not a shaman?"

Hao didn't answer, far too focused on Ayasha for the moment. Hao seemed intent on keeping the promise he made but truly, it was to benefit him the most.

---- [ x ] ----

Hao knew there was a flare of fury there. Ayasha clearly wasn't happy with him. Whether it was what he said or possibly the circumstances beforehand, he couldn't quite say. All he knew was she was angry with him.

She marched forward and, like the day they had really first spoken, slapped him hard. He nearly stumbled right over before she'd reached out, wrapping her arms around him. An unfamiliar warmth washed through him.

Hao returned the embrace, squeezing her tightly. He would have no one else by his side. Ayasha had done more than enough to remain there. He would not see her walk away.

"Surely you can forgive me, my queen?" he asked, closing his eyes for a brief moment, "I did not mean to hurt you."

Ayasha had been worried. Honestly, among all of them, she was the most concerned. The others, well, naturally fear swirled through them. She would be the only one who seemed to hold any fond feelings for him.

"Come now, it's fine now," he pressed after a moment, smiling, "Things will be repaired, slowly be surely."

Hao was confident about this. Destruction would rain for many days, no doubt. Those who remained would struggle to survive. Shamans would remain. Something new would blossom from all of this. His ultimate goal had finally been realized.

A frown lined Mohammad’s lips, as he shook his head, turning away from the reunited pair. There were more important things to fret about and besides, it didn’t seem like there was quite a rush just yet. There was time still to piece everything together, to prepare.

“I imagine that will be the case, yes…” Mohammad answered. That was, if Hao made due on his promises anyways… They could only wait and see now. “I worry for what might follow however.”

From the sounds of it, many were now. If any rose up against Hao they would most likely be struck down. At least, that’s what Mohammad assumed anyways. Things were difficult to predict now and Mohammad wasn’t fond of this. He gave a reassuring squeeze to Kalila’s shoulder. She’d revived him and in return, he would protect her as best that he could.

“Perhaps laying low while it occurs might be the best for everyone,” he pointed out. He’d want to avoid unnecessary bloodshed now if he could help it. Peyote’s betrayal still burned strong in him, as it was…

He wondered, briefly, if they might need to do just that soon, however. Why Hao was no acting out his desires now was concerning though perhaps he’d had other ideas to tend to first. It was increasingly difficult to guess at anymore.

----[x]----

It had taken only seconds for Hao to return the embrace, drawing her into his warmth. Ayasha felt her heart soar briefly in response, despite any agitation and worry she’d been contesting with over the last few days. She grunted in answer at first, unwilling to pull away just yet. For so many days she could only just wait. Sitting back so passively wasn’t in her nature at all.

“You’ve got a lot to make up for!” she accused, the pout she adorned hidden.

Ayasha found herself reluctant to pull away, despite any mutterings and stares. Many were probably concerned for what would follow once Hao enacted his dream. She couldn’t imagine it would be a peaceful affair after all. Perhaps it was this too that kept her stalling a bit.

“Jerk,” Ayasha uttered again, in lieu of anything further.

In a way she was wary of what was to come. Though many humans were despicable it were those children, innocent in all of this, that would ultimately pay the price. Still, Ayasha couldn’t bring herself to argue against Hao’s wishes, not this time. The world needed to change eventually or else everything would end up far too damaged to be repaired.

Kalila knew she had little to worry about with Ayasha in Hao's care. Still, it hurt a little to think they might inevitably have to part ways for a time. Hao's motives were still rather unclear. Some shamans might even fall to him. It wasn't safe for anyone who wasn't really close to the young man.

"I feel much the same," she replied to him.

Of course, the worry, fear, and anger was thick in the air. Shamans were rising to their feet. Some were fleeing, others stood to attack Hao. Kalila swallowed thickly. Things were not looking up. The Shaman Fights were over officially but it seemed it would continue until those who opposed were dead.

"I agree..." she shook her head a little, "There's going to be a fight, however long or short it is, I'd rather not stick around to see it."

She'd seen enough slaughter to last her a lifetime. Whatever Ayasha decided to do, it was up to her. She was capable of making her own decisions. Kalila wouldn't force her to do anything she might not want.

Hao looked far too intense now, staring passed Ayasha's shoulder to those who had stood. That was a look she knew well enough. People were going to fall.

"Let's find a safe place...just for a while. He won't let Ayasha get hurt. In that regard, I trust him," she finally finished.

---- [ x ] ----

Thoughts rushed through so many minds. He could feel the foul emotions of those who stood around him. Some had already risen to their feet, spirits bristling beside them. In moments, no doubt, he would be attacked. Hao would put down anyone who opposed him.

He chuckled a little. Of course she would be forgiving but with a bit of spunk to end it all. This fire was what drew him to her in the first place. Hao would have nothing else.

"There will be plenty of making up to do," he told her, "Anything you want."

His gaze wandered briefly toward those who would advance. A fire seemed to light in his eyes, intense and startling. These shamans knew who they were dealing with. For some to think they could rise against him was laughable at best.

"For now, it may be best that you lay low," he explained, "Once this has all passed and those who continue to try and oppose me are dealt with, I wouldn't exactly call this area safe."

It was the truth. Who would think that anyone would rise against the king. This is what would happen. They knew his plan and wanted to stop it. Now was far too late however. He shook his head, pulling back and spoke;

"There's much to do. I should be off. Unless you wish to accompany me. What you will see however, I can not shield you from it."

Mohammad nodded, rising to his feet and aiding Kalila in the process. The sooner they were out of this area the better. He had no desire to watch what would soon happen. The ones willing to try to fight Hao would not wait much longer, after all. It was even possible they were waiting for the right moment to strike first as it was.

“We’ll move quickly,” he promised, already urging her forward. Mohammad spared one last glance back towards Hao and Ayasha, wondering how the latter might fare after all this was over. He shook his head; if only for Kalila’s sake he hoped the young woman did not come out of this ordeal too broken…

His pace, even at first, grew swifter still. He could hear some shamans already integrating spirits with mediums, striding forward as they did so. It would only be a matter of seconds at this rate, and Mohammad could not be certain that they wouldn’t be caught in the crossfire if Hao used some kind of sweeping maneuver through the hostile shamans.

“I am certain Ayasha will come find you when things have settled,” Mohammad pointed out, urging Kalila to move quicker if she was able. The two were too close not to, even if Ayasha might be distracted in the meantime. For now they had to worry about their own safety.

----[x]----

Ayasha pulled away finally, well aware that those who were planning to oppose Hao, even now, would wait no longer. Perhaps they were preparing as it was. She’d rather not get caught in that crossfire. She hadn’t made it so far in the tournament for nothing but she wouldn’t be able to take on so many opponents all at once either. She had no doubts some might target her to get at Hao at this rate as it was…

She turned to view the shamans who remained. Some, still, were leaving, perhaps to find a safe place to bunker down now that they saw who the victor was with their own eyes. Among them Ayasha spotted Kalila with Mohammad and relief spread through her. At least Kalila would not be caught up in the residual fighting.

“And be forced to wait around again? Yeah, right!” Ayasha scoffed. Even so she couldn’t shake the wary feeling that washed over her either way. There was no way she wouldn’t come out of this without a haunted mind but sitting back, waiting and having to imagine it all would be so much worse…

Nearby Maska remained, Muna and Tawa on either side of him, waiting for Ayasha’s command. It would be a simple, practiced motion to infuse the three into their mediums and ready to protect herself. How any expected to best Hao, she hadn’t a clue but that didn’t seem to stop the group that remained.

“Besides, a few of these guys might think of trying to take me on anyways,” she pointed out.

Kalila got to her feet with the help of Mohammed. Truth be told, she'd been shaky ever since Peyote had done what he'd done. She'd always been the anxious sort but never this bad. It never lingered so long.

"Sounds as good a plan as any," she told him.

Truthfully, they didn't have much of a plan on any of these occasions. Kalila assumed the island would remain the safest place for any shaman while the purge took place. They couldn't leave here, not yet. Their only choice was to flee and hide out until the worst of it had passed.

Kalila kept a hand on her memorial tablet. If she needed to create a canopy to protect them, she would. Valen was mostly used for healing and bringing the dead back but he still had other talents as well.

"She will," she replied quietly, only sparing a glance back once, "though she certainly knows how to get into her fair share of trouble."

Whatever happened now, Kalila had good faith in Ayasha to be sensible enough. The girl wanted freedom and often became reckless.

She didn't get to finish her thought much further. They had covered a little ground but even so, a rumble shook the beach once again. Only a brief flash of light seemed to blind her before it settled again. The Great Spirit's power truly was terrifying.

---- [ x ] ----

Hao expected as much. Ayasha had something of abandonment issues, her parents having much to do with the condition. Understandably she was effected by it. He would ensure she had little to fret over.

"Ah, never the patient one, were you?" he teased in response, readying himself for battle. He had kept Spirit of Fire. Even with the Great Spirit, his previous one could trump all of these shamans, "Well, perhaps I did take a tad too long this time around."

With a flick of his wrist, the ground trembled. He would make an example of these shamans. No one would rise against him again.

Violently, one mans body contorted before laying still. The seas swelled, washing away others. Hao's new spirit, the spirits of billions, would make quick work of these invades.

"Is that so," he replied calmly, as if unphased by this slaughter, "Well, who has their eye on you? I will make certain they are dealt with accordingly."

One might not seem him as possessive. With Ayasha, it was a different story. There were only a few he would truly call 'important' among his group. Ayasha had been one of them. He would not allow her to be taken away.

"Truthfully, I could easily just split this island in two and send these fools plummeting," he admitted, "But I'd rather make an example. Besides, you worry for your friend. I'm glad she left. I can't guarantee onlookers won't be harmed."

Mohammad did not bother to spare another glance behind him. There was little time, he knew it even before the ground shook violently again. Just what was Hao capable of now? They all knew that becoming the victor and merging with the Great Spirit would bring great knowledge and power but this seemed so unreal!

He shook the thought away. For now they had to focus on finding a safe place even if they couldn’t be sure that the island would even remain safe at all. For all either of them knew Hao might very well decimate the entire place to rid all of these shamans at once.

“Let’s move quicker, if you can stand to!” he urged further. The further they were the better.

Even so, no matter the distance they might cross Mohammad could not rid himself of the wary feeling that washed over him. His stomach was in knots, and his legs felt weak. All they could do was wait it all out now…

----[x]----

At least Hao was well aware of just how long she’d been stuck sitting and waiting. Was he eager to show these shamans how powerful he was now? It seemed as such as he sent the ground quaking again, forcing Ayasha to work to remain upright. Only after the shaking had ceased did she integrate her trio of spirits into their chosen mediums, ready to defend herself as needed.

Even so, the contorted shaman was sickening to see. Perhaps those that had been washed away by the ocean had the merciful end of things…

“Hard to say,” Ayasha admitted. She’d felt a few stares, seen some judgmental ones to boot over the last few days for her loyalty and fondness for Hao remaining despite what had happened. Who they’d come from however, Ayasha hadn’t bothered to memorize the faces or the names. “But I know a few have the idea in mind at least.”

Ayasha wasn’t so sure about this ‘example’ business but if it meant that Kalila would remain safer then she’d prefer it that way. Splitting the island would endanger more than those fighting against Hao as it was. No, Ayasha couldn’t let that happen.

“I’d rather not see an island sink anyways,” Ayasha answered before dashing forward to meet another shaman who’d moved to swing his weapon. Whether he’d been aiming for Hao or for her, it didn’t matter.

Kalila picked up her pace. After that tremor, she didn't want to stick around close to Hao. She was afraid. Would the island hold at this rate? Even the water was starting to crash more violently onto the shore.

"How far is he going to take this?" she asked, as if anyone could answer.

Wind was whipping up. Kalila had to shield her eyes here and there, sand whipping up with the breeze. Trees howled and creaked. Well, the forests were out now. If those trees toppled, there was a chance one or both of them could be crushed. Staying on the beach wasn't exactly safe either, with the waters rising.

"We can run," she suggested, "But at this rate, I'm more unsure of where we would even go!"

With Hao literally playing with the weather, anywhere they could go was potentially dangerous. Kalila hoed that he didn't get it in his head to do anything more to the island. It was the only thing keeping them all safe, at least the ones who weren't fighting Hao now.

"I can't believe this. This is what 'God' is? It's terrible!"

---- [ x ] ----

Hao chuckled, barely moving back. These shamans would keep coming and would meet their end. Their thoughts were clouded with rage. Even some who had originally allied themselves with him were attacking. Three familiar witches were among them.

"A shame," he replied after a moment. He knew these ghosts and mediums well. They would be simple to snuff out, "They'll have little idea of their end. No one should even think of taking what's mine."

There was relief in her, it was easy to feel. Even now, her worries still show onto Kalila. While Hao had only picked her up for her ability, he would respect Ayasha's fondness for the older companion. If he played his cards right, he might even be able to get her and Mohammed back onto his own side.

"Perhaps it is better I leave it be, yes," he told her. Another flick of his wrist sent he winds howling, the sea continuing it's work. If he wanted to, he could make this volcano under this place erupt. Of course, that would be troubling for those who still wanted on his side, "After all, I've grown quite fond of the hot springs here. Maybe a nice long bath is in order after this, hmm?"

There was a sense of bashfulness there, uncertainty. Of course there would be. Despite her confidence, she was still quite shy. Ayasha was quite the funny sort.

"You're free to join me if you wish," he continued teasingly, "It'd make it a little more enjoyable."

Kalila’s question was one without answer, at least right now it was. They only way they would know was if they survived to see the aftermath. Mohammad had doubts they’d make it even passed that point. Despite their low odds Mohammad would do the best that he could to keep them both safe.

“We’ll find out in time,” he murmured though not without a bit of despair in his tone. They’d known this was coming but now seeing it… It was always going to end like this, if he was honest with himself.

He glanced around, making sure that Djinn had remained near to them. Dutifully, he had, without any kind of reminder to. This was good, he still had a wish to make today and if things got bad enough he’d use it to keep he and Kalila as safe as he could. It was the most he could do but using it too early might very well be a fatal mistake.

“In the end it matters who has that power,” Mohammad pointed out though it did little to help the situation. He squeezed her shoulder reassuringly again though it probably did little to help.

----[x]----

Ayasha still found it odd that someone would speak of her so fondly. Had she really grown so accustomed to just traveling from place to place, forming no really lasting attachments? Perhaps that had been the nature of most shamans now—or at least, it had been. Whatever might change after this Ayasha couldn’t guess at.

“Riiight. I’ll suppose they’ll learn,” she noted.

There was just enough time to trip up the opponent she’d engaged briefly before the gusts of wind grew ever stronger, nearly blowing some of the younger opponents down. Just how far was this going to go? Ayasha had a sinking suspicion it wouldn’t end until these shamans were dead…

That thought was replaced as Hao spoke once again, drawing her attention. It was difficult to break her habits, so long placed after years of training. And yet Hao would easily be able to protect her with that much power. There was honestly not much to worry about if her attention diverted briefly. Still it was difficult to do, even as her face grew a little red at the suggestion.

“A-Ah? I hardly think now’s the time for plans like that!” she scolded, if only to save face.

Kalila grabbed onto the back of Mohammed's shirt just to keep herself from stumbling over. Blustery winds were threatening enough. She didn't want to fall. Not now. Part of her worried that she might not get back up.

What worried her most was Mohammed's tone. He was normally such a sure individual. Now, his voice held nervousness and fear. If he was scared than she was too. This wasn't right. None of this was right.

"We all knew that's all he wanted," she answered him, "Were we right to let this happen?"

This was something that had bothered her for a while now. Sure, humans were despicable. She'd seen her fair share of cruelty. Kalila didn't care for their work on the environment. Something had to give. In this way though? A jab of guilt would always remain there.

He squeezed her shoulder, if only to let her know he was there. It was a comforting act and helped a little. Her heart still pounded hard against her chest. The wind was dying down a little. Maybe Hao was finished with his slaughter...

---- [ x ] ----

Despite the attempts on their lives, every attack from the other shamans were nothing compared to his power. He could easily destroy the human race in a whole with this. No one would stop him at this rate. There would be nothing anyone could do.

Ayasha's reaction wasn't something of a surprise to him. Honestly, he knew it was coming. Even if it was a brief pause in the fighting, her face turned red as she stared at him. She couldn't deny the emotions that swirled within her.

"It's the perfect time for plans," he replied, chipper. One man that had approached the two was crushed by the Spirit of Fire, set ablaze. That was all that was needed, "Besides, you can't deny wanting to."

There was a brief pause in the fighting. Some shamans were backing off. Those who remained were far braver than the others. He couldn't allow them all to live if they continued to do this.

"Is that all now?" he asked, glancing at them, "They all seemed so confident moments before. So you've finally realized not one of you can win?"

Hao allowed the wind to die down a little. Honestly, to think that they would bow out so quickly. What a shame. Then again, he'd done what he needed to do. He made an example. Perhaps now, they would all understand his point.

The tightening of her grasp on his shirt did not go unnoticed. It wasn’t hard to see she was frightened, he was too if he were honest. The question she asked however was too difficult to answer. There was no way of knowing if it was right or not, only that many of them had strove for it all the same.

He shook his head. “It might be the only way,” he uttered finally. Despite the way his heart raced, Mohammad was sure of this; he just hadn’t expected the weight that fell on his shoulders now that it was happening.

Moving forward still they had yet to find a place to bunker down and wait out this storm. Mohammad only hoped that Hao did not have plans to decimate this island as well, not for the first nor the last time. Everything could be sorted out later, when it was safe.

His eyes darted here and there, seeking a safe place. They’d made little ground as it was—would this continue for much longer? Mohammad hoped it wouldn’t. There had to be a period of rest, or at least for Hao to move on to enact his dream upon the world… Mohammad shook his head again.

“Keep your eyes open for a place to bunk down in,” he muttered, perhaps to distract both of them from the circumstances around them.

----[x]----

Hao didn’t seem at all deterred by her answer. In fact, he never was, now that she thought about it. Not for the first time she wondered if he asked those things just to goad her a little. If that was his plan it worked.

“H-Hush up, you!” she shouted. Surely the shamans who remained, trying to rise against Hao were growing enraged at this lax conversation as it was. “There’s plenty of time for that later anyways!”

She decided not to dwell on the fact that she hadn’t denied his claim. Was there even a point to anyways? Ayasha didn’t think so and besides there were more worrisome things to deal with right now. If those who still remained, despite the Spirit of Fire so easily taking out another threat, then this particular skirmish was not yet finished. Still, at least several had come to their senses—less lives lost would be a blessing by the end of it all.

It seemed the retreat of a large portion of their fellow shamans brought Hao back on track to what was going on. Or perhaps it was only a momentary distraction from the previous topic. Honestly, Ayasha wouldn’t be surprised either way.

The wind was dying down and the ground quaked less. Kalila was relieved momentarily until a distant shadow passed overhead. She swallowed hard when she realized it was the Spirit of Fire. No doubt, he'd be heading toward the closest cities.

"Too late now, either way," she finally said.

He continued to push forward and in turn, Kalila tried to focus on the same. It was hard, if she was honest. She was far more than shaken. The rush of adrenaline helped but she'd be so exhausted after.

"Right," she said, sparing a glance around herself.

The buildings on the island might have been less than safe now. Most of them were rotted and old as it was, having been abandoned for years. With the small tremors, no doubt many of them would have suffered.

"At least Hao isn't destroying the island, " she mused, if only to keep things up, "All I'm worried over now are a few wayward shaman."

---- [ x ] ----

Hao offered a chuckle in response. Honestly, it was always funny to see her grow bashful. He knew the right buttons to press. The amusement out of what he did never grew old. He simply kept doing it though, the feelings of fondness were always there.

"A little bashful now, are you?" he teased, "Some day, that will ebb away."

Whatever thought raced through her mind left him chuckling a little again. He would take pleasure in prodding her at a quieter time. After all, there was much she wanted. In time, Ayasha might receive it.

"Well, perhaps we should take care of the matters at hand," he spoke up once again. The Spirit of Fire remained near, easily taking to a sky form, "We'll leave the island, now that things have calmed down. I'm rather excited to start."

Hao nodded toward the large spirit, waiting on Ayasha to climb up first. He would follow suit afterward. She seemed intent on coming with him, after all.

"Anyone who may be foolish enough to follow will meet an untimely demise," he warned to the few shamans left, "I would rather it not come to that. We are fellow shamans, after all."

With that, he climbed onto his spirit and allowed it to raise in the air. A grin lined his lips as he went. Truly, these day would be magnificent ones soon.

Kalila was correct, there wasn’t anything they could do about it now but to see things through to the end. If they were lucky it would grow peaceful as Hao wished it to be. At least, in that way, Mohammad would be able to justify the means to that end.

He was quiet for the time being, focusing more on finding shelter. When things were blown over and Ayasha came to find Kalila then they would focus on the next course of action. Until then, they could only work on survival on this island. With their spirits it should not be too difficult a case, assuming things did not grow crazed here as well.

“We’re in luck, at least,” Mohammad agreed. “If he’d done that we’d be out of luck…”

Still, if he’d had to waste his wish that day to save them from such a fate, he would have in a heartbeat. Anything else that might have followed could be dealt with as they came. Nonetheless not having to waste that wish… it was a safeguard for the day, one that could not be tossed away so carelessly. Mohammad could not imagine that this purge of Hao’s would end in just a day after all…

His hand moved from Kalila’s shoulder, taking her hand in his instead. It was smaller than his own, the skin softer, yet he could feel her trembling. Was she even aware of it? He couldn’t be sure.

----[x]----

Ayasha huffed, close to pouting if not for the situation around her. The shamans that remained, while still bristling and champing at the bit to attack, had not chosen to try anything further—yet. There was no telling if that would change later, once their confidence was restored again. All the same it did not seem to deter Hao that this might be the case.

The Spirit of Fire had shifted form even a Hao spoke. So, they were to move on and get it all started then? Ayasha’s face cooled quickly, wary of what she might witness. Who knew what all Hao was capable of now after all, especially so if he intended to see this through entirely himself.

“Ah? Sure,” she answered, sounding much more confident than she felt. All the same she trotted to the large crimson spirit, scrambling up quickly. Muna, Tawa and Maska would remain integrated for the time being. With how quickly Spirit of Fire could travel when needed, there was little worry about straining her mana reserves just yet.

She’d made it atop properly by the time Hao had warned the remaining shamans that still stood gathered below and had begun his climb up as well. He took far shorter a time than she had, ease of practice aiding him. Even before he’d settled Hao was already grinning, looking rather elated.

“Where to first then…?”

They were in luck. How long would it last? Some of the shamans here were obviously going to pick a fight. With Hao gone now, maybe they'd turn on his followers. It wouldn't be out of the question, she knew that for certain.

He took her hand into his own, a comfort though, she knew she shook. The lingering anxieties was enough. She was exhausted. She would be for a long time.

"I just hope that luck doesn't run out," she finally replied, "People are bound to start a witch hunt, I'm sure."

Kalila prayed things didn't come to that but people were predictable, even if they were shamans. In fact, that just made them more dangerous.

She shook the thought from her mind, squeezing his hand briefly. At least she wasn't alone in all of this. She would have had a break down long ago, she was certain of it.

"There has to be a cave somewhere around here...something," she muttered, keeping an eye out. The island was otherwise deserted and the forests were thick. Much of it might have been unexplored so places to hide had to be hidden about.

---- [ x ] ----

No one followed, no one tried to shoot them down. That was for the best. They knew better at this point, or at least, for the moment they would slink away. Eventually, most shamans would do the same. There would be little reason to worry.

His attention turned more to Ayasha now that they were off. Since this was a Japanese island, it would be easier to start where it was closest and work from there. Even if the humans believed this could be fixed with their science or their machine, Hao would simply destroy them.

"Well take care of the first few Japanese islands and work our way from there," he explained, "The larger nations will be a hassle to separate shamans from normal humans but it will be done regardless."

If anything, Ayasha was more familiar with the States. She and Kalila had traveled much of it. One should be enough to aid him as it was. Kalila was far too shaken, thoughts rushing through her head, to aid him for now.

"If you wish to help, you can always aid the shamans," he suggested, "I'm sure many of them may be caught in cross fire. I trust you can handle such a feat."

That might shield her from a little bit of the carnage. Not much, but enough that she wouldn't be scarred. Until things settled and humans were gone, he would not stop.

”We’ll stay out of harm’s way, one way or another,” he promised. How they’d manage that, well, he wasn’t sure at all… Perhaps promising such a thing was reckless though Mohammad found he didn’t care much.

The other shamans would surely move on eventually and if they stayed hidden they’d be fine. At least, that’s what he was hoping for. The less confrontations they had to contend with in the coming chaos the better. ‘Careful what you wish for’—the saying had never rang so clearly in his head until now.

He shook his head. “We might need to search longer, but we’ll find somewhere to hide in.”

Was he just talking to sooth her nerves? Mohammad wasn’t even sure anymore; the words tumbled from his lips as if unbidden. If it helped he didn’t mind babbling, not now. It seemed like it might ease a few tensions at the moment as it was. Distractions might be a good thing, if not fully occupied with. It was the most they could do.

His gaze darted here and there, seeking that hiding spot they so desired and needed. It had to be easier than this!

----[x]----

Japan first… Ayasha had to admit she was not too familiar with the country, having arrived with Kalila only for the Shaman Tournament preliminary fights as it was. Perhaps Hao had a better idea of what to expect around these parts. Oh, what was she kidding, she had no fear that that was the case.

She spared a nod, though she was still quite wary of what she might expect to see. It wouldn’t be pretty at all… Still, she had no doubts that humans would man a witch-hunt against any known or even just suspected shamans. Hao couldn’t do everything if he was focused on this purging business first and foremost.

“Okay! Leave it to me!” she boasted. A long task was ahead of them and though she had no delusions that it would be a long affair she’d hold her own as best she could. Shamans were so few in numbers compared to what they were famed to be in history. Even just one unnecessary death of one would be too much…

While she had no shielding powers like Kalila and Valen, her and her spirits’ brute strength could suffice. She and Maska alone were a tough match but with Muna and Tawa they’d be a force to be reckoned with against any normal humans.

Her eyes strayed to the horizon, watching the point where sky and water met. While a breathtaking view, even now, there was much on Ayasha’s mind. It made it difficult to appreciate the sight.

Kalila nodded in response. She took his word for it, honestly. She trusted his ability and after bring brought back, he would be stronger. If Hao had done anything for her, it was giving her this ability. She'd nearly lost him. She wouldn't allow it to happen again.

She hoped to find a place soon. The way her mind raced worried her. Sleeping would be a blessing right about now. Kalila hadn't gotten much of it in the passed several days.

"I'd like to get off this island soon," she muttered the reply, "but it seems like it'll be the safest place for us right now."

Whatever Hao did beyond this island, Kalila figured this place would become something of a safe haven for the time being. She couldn't imagine what Hao might do in the future however.

These thoughts and mixed feelings mingled with each other as she kept an eye out. There wasn't much else to do. Conversation started and stopped. Mohammed had far more experience in recon and the like. He might be able to pick something out quicker than she was.

---- [ x ] ----

There was apprehension there. Hao knew she wasn't the type to admit such a thing. This wouldn't be easy for her. It really wouldn't have been easy for any of them. Even if they had talked big all those years, when it came to actually doing it? Hao knew they would not pull through.

"Then I'll leave you to that," he replied, "I trust that if you need me, you'll call."

Hao already had a bit of a spiritual bond with her. If he felt she was in trouble, he would come rushing to help. He could provide her all the protection in the world.

It might take hours to reach the nearest islands but at least he had a plan for her. From there, it was just seeing how things worked out. That wasn't always easy. Nothing often worked out as planned.

"Don't fret too much," he carried on, "I won't anything happen to you."

In some regard, it was almost strange for him to be so protective. He no longer dwelled on it as often as he used to. Ayasha was important to him, that was it.

They started and stopped, both in their paces and their conversation. At the very least Kalila was remaining calm, but was that only because he was here with her? Mohammad couldn’t be sure though he assumed so. He’d seen her stressed before—the time he awoke from death, with her at his side came to mind…

He shook his head again. This was insane but he needed to keep focused. Sucking in a deep breath, he did jus that, forcing away the worrisome thoughts. There would be plenty of time as they awaited this new world of Hao’s to settle to think them over.

“Until we hear from Ayasha we’ll have to operate under the assumption that things have not yet settled,” Mohammad pointed out, mind whirling. Though he spoke as if days might have already passed hardly an hour had gone by. This would be a long ordeal for sure… “We’ll get through this.” ’One way or another.’

Djinn gestured towards something nearby, drawing Mohmmad’s attention to it. It was a long minute of staring before he realized just what it was—a cave! Hidden behind thick underbrush and low hanging tree branches. If he’d been less stressed, less shaken up he might have noted it without Djinn’s help. But still, if he’d not noticed it it would be a good hiding spot for sure for the time being.

He tugged lightly at Kalila’s hand, urging her after him. “Looks like we’ve found our hiding spot. Thank you, Djinn.”

----[x]----

Her eyes strayed from the horizon, back to Hao as he spoke again. That sounded more like he expected it rather than hoped for it. Who knew, maybe that was the case. She couldn’t deny that the thought that someone was there to safeguard her if she needed it was relieving. Not that she’d admit to that out loud.

“Ah, assuming you’ll hear,” she pointed out.

She could hold her own against humans, she knew that much. Still, they could be dangerous in groups, overwhelming even and if a witch-hunt started and she was caught in the middle… She must have been obviously brooding by Hao’s following comment. Blinking, she jerked out of her thoughts, a second or two passing before she realized what Hao had said.

For a minute she wasn’t sure what to say to that. It had become a little more than obvious that Hao was a little possessive of things he grew fond of—it had seemed like she’d made that list of what he was fond of overtime.

“Well, I’ll hold you to that then,” Ayasha finally uttered.

Their search seemed like it was going to be fruitless. They started and stopped but nothing turned up. Kalila just tried to press on. It was the most she could do. After all, if she died here, she couldn't bring anyone back. Her life, she became aware, was worth quite a bit now.

"I imagine she will," she finally answered, "I trust Hao enough to take care of her."

Hao obviously wasn't going to let anything happen. He was closer to Ayasha than he had been to any of them. Due to that, Kalila did trust him with Ayasha. In that regard, it was the only 'blessing' she could really give.

Her thoughts were interrupted when Mohammed tugged at her hand, nodding toward the place he was talking about. Kalila hadn't even seen it, the foliage covering the entrance so much. It was something, far better than being out in he open.

"Thank goodness," she replied as they approached the opening.

Ducking in was a simple thing. The cave was cool and sheltered. They could hide here for a while, provided no one had a good eye for this place. Thinking on that, Kalila summoned Valen, placing him within his medium. She knelt down, touching certain parts of the foliage that might give way or make it easier to spot them. It grew thick and lush, further shielding them.

"Just to be sure," she finally brought up, "This whole tournament has made me terribly paranoid."

---- [ x ] ----

He glanced at her, sparing a smile. Surely she had felt when Kalila was in some kind of trouble. It was more than a sixth sense. Calling out might not echo to him but the feeling would. Only those with close bonds felt such things.

"There's no need to shout out if you don't need to," he replied, "People with special senses often don't even need to speak. If you're in trouble, I'm likely to feel it long before you could even call out for help."

If that gave her any hint as to how close he felt to her, than she would understand his position a little more fully. When he said he wouldn't allow her to be hurt, he meant it.

Her feelings on that might be a little mixed, might have even been flattered. It was true enough that he'd grown possessive of her. She could see that plain as day. Hao stopped trying to deny it to himself as well.

"You've nothing to worry about," he said, "I'll give you Spirit of Fire for further protection if I must. I'm well aware humans might view us as devils rather than saviors."

Hao was fully prepared for that fact. They would call him a devil and try to destroy him. Little did they know, the 'God' they knew so well was on his side. He was the god now and he would pass judgement on the human race.

Kalila was already looking as if she were more at ease now that they were out of sight. Djinn and Valen could stay out of sight and keep guard for them for any hostile or paranoid shamans that remained on the island. Turning against one another would do no one any good though Mohammad expected some might while Hao’s dream was in the midst of being achieved. Panic tended to do that to people.

He turned to watch as Kalila set to work with the aid of Valen, allowing the plantlife to grow further, bolstered by their mana. What would have taken years occurred in a matter of seconds, further obscuring the cavern’s opening. Sunlight filtered through—barely—allowing for sight though It was only enough to avoid running into one another.

“A wise course of action,” he complimented, sparing a smile she might not be able to see in the dark. “I am sure if we stay vigilant we’ll be fine.” ’For a time.’

Unless another’s spirit when poking about and found them or they were sensed they could make due with this place. Mohammad had been forced to remain in worse places after all. This would not be the end of him or Kalila if he had any say about it. No, there was too much yet to say and do.

----[x]----

Ayasha blinked, a little surprised at the little lesson. It was embarrassing that she didn’t know such simple things but really, could she be blamed? Everything she’d learned was self-taught or taught by Maska. What he did not know of shamans she did not either. She had never had a proper shamanic teacher.

Even more than that though, it told Ayasha a lot about Hao’s feelings for her. She’d had an inkling before now but this just seemed to be what was needed to really push it forward. She cleared her throat, turning her warming face away from Hao. Though she was admittedly fond of him she wasn’t quite confident in such matters. That much was probably obvious to everyone though.

“A-ah? I’ll keep that in mind!” she managed to say.

If they went with little rest it might very well come down to Ayasha having to rely on hiding behind the Spirit of Fire until her own mana reserves were able to be bolstered as she rested. At least Hao was well aware of any possible problems. She shook her head, turning back to the horizon. It would be some time before they reached the first of Japan’s lands… she hoped it would be enough time to prepare herself…

She shook her head, reaching out instead to pinch Hao’s cheek. “You better not think of leaving me anywhere if things get tough though!”

Kalila managed a smile at the praise. The soft spoken words seemed much louder as the noise echoed off the cave walls. At least this way, to the human eye they wouldn't be seen. As long as no spirits came poking about, they would be fine for a little longer.

"Thanks," she replied, sparing a glance back, "When Ayasha and I traveled, I'd do this a lot to block out rain or get a little shade on hot days. I never had to use it like this though. I'm glad that the little trick can keep us hidden for a time."

Kalila wasn't one for combat as it was. She could provide shelter, defense, and heal but fighting? It just wasn't in her. Mohammed and his spirit would be their only real form of protection. She prayed it would be enough.

When she'd finished, she pulled back and allowed Valen to rest in his tablet again. He'd merely huffed, something that went ignored by Kalila. She knew that Valen was concerned about all of this.

"That's the best I can do," she finally said, "without making it look too obvious that something may be here."

At least now they could rest without being out in the open. If she was honest, she appreciated the coolness in the cave. It left her a little less on edge and more comfortable.

---- [ x ] ----

He knew that she would be surprised by what he said. It seemed that neither Ayasha nor Kalila had known about that little tidbit. They both might have felt something when things went wrong but that particular feeling would simply be written off as intuition.

Her face turned bright red, her cheeks hot by the very thought. Ayasha's mind was whirling. It was hard to shut things out anymore. At times, Hao had simply given up on the idea of blocking out what everyone was thinking about. There was no point.

Hao chuckled in response. She really was a bashful sort, even if she tried to make it seem otherwise. That confidence could ebb away in a heartbeat.

"I'm sure you will, my dear," he replied lightly.

The silence only lasted a moment. It would be quite some time before they would even reach the nearer islands of Japan. From there, the chances of rest were slim.

Ayasha had reached out, pinching his cheek lightly. He laughed pleasantly, easily taking hold of her hand in his. He did not let go of it as she had figured he would. The closer she was, the better they both felt.

"I would not dream of doing as such," he assured lightly, "What kind of man would I be if I did? Even if want to protect the people I care for."

Mohammad’s smile grew a little as Kalila spoke of days long past. It was easier to forget the situation they were in when she spoke of such light-hearted things. Perhaps those memories would be what would tide them both over in this trying time. It was not as if they could relax enough to partake in hobbies with livid shamans out there, against Hao’s wishes.

“It is the basics that often come in handy,” he reminded her. He reached out pat her shoulder, hand lingering there longer than was probably necessary. Still, she seemed to enjoy the little touches. “It’s better than it was.”

Dropping his hand to his side, Mohammad moved to sit, tugging out a memorial tablet for Djinn to rest within. The great genie gave a grateful nod before doing just that. Even the ghosts were restless… It was not a good time at all and barely anything had really begun at all…

How many days would they be like this?

“Let’s just focus on calming down and thinking things through, huh?” he offered, moving to seat himself against the cool cavern wall. It was a nice distraction from everything that had happened and would happen. He patted the spot next to him before he realized Kalila might not be able to see the gesture.

----[x]----

She’d expected him to bat her hand away; instead he’d taken hold of it, warming it against the chill in the air at these heights. Firm, yet gentle—it was a surprising turn. Usually he was teasing her and trying to push her buttons. She found she wasn’t willing to tug her hand away.

“Well, t-that’s a weight off my shoulders,” she admitted.

She shifted, growing more comfortable. There wasn’t any reason to remain tense for so many hours of travel—no, it wouldn’t do her and good at all. But then, what was she supposed to say to the rest of that? Ayasha wasn’t even sure if he expected an actual answer to that question anyways.

In the end of things, Ayasha opted to remain quiet on the matter. Instead she shifted a bit closer to his side, hand still clasped in his. It’d been a long time since she’d opted to grow close to anyone new after all. It was a little odd, really.

Things were going to get hectic; she’d be dumb to deny that much. The most she could do was try to prepare for it and not to get too worried about it. Still, there were still those she knew from a time before she’d ran away from home… Ayasha dreaded glimpsing them again at all.

The mention of her travels seemed to lighten the mood. Honestly, it left her a little lighter as well. Most days were simple back then. Just wander from one place to the next. They weren't particularly close to anyone but that was okay.

Kalila shook the thought. The Shaman Tournament had brought her good things as well. If she and Ayasha hadn't joined, she wouldn't have met Mohammed. Even if things weren't good now, there was always something of an up side.

"That's very true," she agreed, sparing a smile he might not see, "The simple things can sometimes very well be the best ones."

She heard Mohammed shift, moving somewhere within the cave. Kalila could just make out his outline, his clothing much lighter than her own. He'd sat down, the sound of patting the ground audible in this place. Kalila followed suit, sitting down beside him.

Kalila couldn't deny the pleasant feeling that overtook her. Her stomach flip flopped and for once, she felt they were sharing time a little more normally. At least, as normally as they could manage in this situation.

"I can't object to that," she replied to him, "It's been one big mess after the other. I can appreciate the downtime, even if it's just sitting in a cave."

---- [ x ] ----

Her mind was whirling once again. Thoughts of the future, what would happen, where they would end up, flooded her mind. Foremost, however, was the thought of growing closer to him.

She seemed to keep herself from doing as such. Ayasha had her problems and as a drifter, she said goodbye to many people. Naturally, she might feel strange about a situation where she might grow this close to someone like him.

He allowed her to scoot closer to him. Ayasha grew comfortable at his side. He wouldn't do anything to push her away, instead keeping her hand in his own.

"You worry too much," he finally brought up. Her mind drifted to her parents. The feeling of abandonment was strong, "I wouldn't leave you. I'm not like these despicable humans, so fickle in who they really care about. Have a little faith, that's all I ask."

If it came to proving it to her, he would do just that. Hao didn't plan on allowing her to get away from him. He had grown rather possessive, even protective, of this one girl. That in and of itself was odd for even him. Hao did not question it anymore.

"I assure you, when things have settled, I intend in making you my queen," he informed. He had said it before and every time, he had meant it.
