She'd lost track of the days a bit in her stay on this god forsaken island. Her clothes were little more than rags now with nothing to patch them up with. It was all she could do to catch an animal or two that wasn't a crab or some oysters. Even just finding clean water to drink was a chore!

Now, however, Kerta sat in the shallows, eyes watching for movement around her in the water. The waves were gentle here, lapping up her arms and sides. She'd gotten used to the cool water long ago, patiently waiting for a crab to scuttle nearby.

Funny, really. She'd been rather ambivalent about the taste of crab meat before and now she couldn't stand it. Still, it was easy to catch and sometimes the only thing she was able to get her hands on. Kerta wasn't exactly a proficient hunter before this as it was.

Something from the corner of her eye caught her attention, far off in the distance. Curious, she lifted her head to see what it might be. There, on the horizon was a ship. Kerta's heart leaped. Was it headed this way? Maybe she'd get lucky and get off this island. She couldn't see any sort of a jolly roger flying among its sails...

Kerta stood suddenly, water splashing every which way as she hurried to the shore. The sooner she got some kindling burning the sooner the smoke could get their attention! It'd be a short affair as it was, some already piled up nearby for later in the night.

Ah Tabai had been surprised when a young female was brought before him. Apparently stranded on an island for who knew how long, the woman was able to send a smoke signal, calling to a ship.

It was a wonder that she managed to survive that long on her own much less anything else. He didn't question it. Whatever kept her alive, whether it be sheer determination or something else, he didn't ask. The woman was rather quiet about that particular story as it was.

For the most part, Ah Tabai kept an eye on her. She was a withdrawn one. Half the time, she seemed unsure of her surroundings or what to do. At times, he felt she knew he was watching her as well.

Often times, he was very aware of her watching him train with lower ranking assassin's. Being a mentor as he was, this came with the territory. She didn't speak up about learning from him, didn't speak up about much at all.

Despite himself, he found himself curious of her story. Quite fond of the tragic stories of his own people, he had come to wonder what happened to this girl as well. Ah Tabai found he might finally ask, if she was willing to share.

----|X|----

Amber was quiet as she started down the dirt road. A basket of bread at her hip, she glanced about. A short hum left her. This place was so large. She had doubts that she'd get lost, just turn back the way she came when she could. Still, it was a fleeting thought and nothing more.

Word from the neighbors had been that Manuel had returned home. He often disappeared for months on end before returning with as little word as when he'd left.

No one asked what he was up to or where he went. Most seemed to assume that he was simply working with other farmers, given what his job was. It was enough to keep others from asking.

Naturally, given how long he'd been gone, he probably didn't have much in his home at the moment. Other neighbors, including herself, often brought a little of what they had. Amber had wandered onto his property to do the same, unsure if he was even home at the moment.

Who knew, he might have been working out in the fields at this hour. She'd rather not be a bother if that was the case.

It hadn't taken long to get picked up, despite any wariness the small group of people had displayed. It was a small ship—a schooner, actually—but a ship all the same. Kerta didn't complain, even when the journey was long to this Tulum place they were heading for. She'd had a lot of questions for these assassins, taking in everything they said and brooding over it on that travel.

Tulum was a place full of dense plant life and all sorts of people dressed in similar uniforms. It was a little strange to get used to, the latter that was. Still, Kerta had managed it, taking care to try to remember as many names as she could though with as many as there were, some coming and going frequently on missions, it was a little difficult.

The day found Kerta wandering the island again. There was a lot to see and observe. Her new pair of clothes were easy to move in, bare feet padding along the ground, mindful of sticks and sharp stones. At her belt she kept a small knife, just in case. She wasn't trained like the others in this place but she knew some basics in case any wild animal tried to get at her. Kerta hoped it would be enough if that was the case.

She stopped, glancing down as something caught her eye. It might have been something others overlooked but Kerta found she quite liked collecting the odd stone or feather or shell. She brushed her hand through the dirt, fishing out the pretty white stone. She'd seen others like it but they'd been pretty tiny.

Standing, Kerta brushed as much dirt off as she could, tucking it away in the pouch at her belt. That feeling was back as she did so, feeling as if someone was watching her again. In a place with so many people, some of which stood guard on the paths, that wasn't exactly a surprise. Nonetheless she glanced around, wondering if she was just being paranoid or not.

----[x]----
Manuel heaved a relieved sigh as he sat on the wooden porch. It was nice to just sit again after so long of being out and about gathering information for his allies again. Being able to just watch the coffee plants grow day by day was something calming in recent years. There were a few others that worked on his large farm, seeing to the plants in his stead. They milled about between the rows as they always did.

Reaching up he situated his hat better atop his head. The wide brim helped shade his eyes from the intense sun as he leaned back on his hands. He wondered if that Amber girl would be coming 'round again. She had a penchant for doing so, that and a few of the other 'neighbors' nearest his farm.

'Suppose I can't deny I need some food,' he admitted. Being gone for as long as he had, off on another island, there wasn't any need for food to be stocked in his absence. He'd have to make a trip into the heart of town to later and get that done.

For now Manuel didn't move, instead stretching his legs out. It really did feel good to just relax. Sometimes it felt as if the Templars had him rushing around, especially when news of this Sage of theirs cropped up.

He shook those thoughts from his head. He was home now and he had coffee bean plants to tend to until the next time his services were called upon. Manuel wasn't about to waste that time worrying and brooding.

Kerta had in some form or manner, adjusted to this place. She'd often taken up asking others about training or learning from them. She never seemed satisfied with just listening, however. It left Ah Tabai wondering if perhaps she'd rather learn these things herself.

Still, she spoke little of herself. No one knew how she'd come to be on that island alone or why. It was something that nagged at him.

Again, he watched her from a distance. She was doing an odd thing or two, simply exploring the area. Once in a while, she'd dig up a shell or take interest in a feather. These seemed to be small hobbies to keep her busy.

At a point, it seemed she felt him watching her. She glanced around carefully, trying to figure out who it was. She obviously knew it could have been a great many.

Eventually, he simply approached her. He motioned to her briefly, waving away any caution she might convey. Kerta seemed to build up walls, though for what reason he could only assume.

"How have you been?" He inquired.

It was a start. Just asking her about her day, her adjusting, might cause her to open up a little. Who knew. Perhaps she had a story or two of her own to share.

----|X|----

Amber had kept a rather steady pace. This place wasn't exactly small, though she didn't mind it so much. The day was warm, something most were rather used to in this area.

She could see workers milling around the area. The smell of coffee beans was strong in the air. Since coming here as often as she did when he'd returned, she'd gotten used to it. The scent didn't bother her as much as it used to.

Not far from where she was now, she could make out his house. A familiar figure sat at the porch, looking aloof. He was a level headed, relaxed type, from what she knew. Amber often didn't hang around long enough to find out more.

She picked up her pace a little, walking along the path up to his home. Indeed, he was there, simply sitting about. She spared a smile as she walked up to his porch.

"How are you, Manuel?" She asked, waiting on the man to reply.

Kerta blinked, Ah Tabai's voice calling out to her. His accent was thick in places though he was still easy to understand, perhaps from years of adopting English to speak to all of the other assassins he brought into the fold. She turned to him, sparing him a polite smile. They hadn't needed to let her stay here, after all and yet they had.

"I've been all right," she said simply, shifting her weight to one foot as she did so. "And you?"

It wasn't like she'd often gotten the chance to speak with Ah Tabai. She'd been told he was the mentor to all of these assassins in the West Indies and so Kerta didn't want to take up any of his time. Usually she directed her questions to others when she had any in mind. Still, she wasn't sure what it was about him but he made it seem easy to trust him when he did approach.

Kerta tipped her head to one side, as if to better study his painted face under the ever present hood. Black, red and white spread over his skin, it wasn't a bad look for him though seeing as he had it on everyday it would be weirder to see him without the face paint.

"Do you need something?" she offered. It wasn't often anyone sought her out.

----[x]----
There wasn't much to listen to around the farm. Then again that was part of the appeal he felt. Manuel liked the contrast between here and the cities and towns. There were far too many impatient people elsewhere. There was something to like about just sitting back and enjoying the little things.

Manuel lifted his head, easily spotting Amber. Her clothes were cleaner than the farm hands and slaves and there was no telltale uniform that those who guarded his crops adorned. Her blonde hair was easy to spy as well amid all the brown and green.

"Well, if it isn't beautiful Amber!" he called, his accent thick. He lifted an arm, gesturing for her to come and sit with him. "Come to spare a loaf or two of bread again?"

There was a basket under her arm, a little clothe over it to protect whatever she brought this time. As if spurred on by the sight of it his stomach began to growl a little. Manuel didn't rush her, however, there was plenty of time to indulge in a meal.

The sun was high up in the sky, now that he thought about it. He had missed lunchtime due to his ship arriving later than intended. A group of pirates had decided to cause some havoc out on the seas again, delaying it. Manuel was glad that they'd gotten away more or less unscathed.

For a brief moment, she seemed surprised that he approached her. He had little doubt that she knew who he was. Maybe that's what brought about the brief reaction. He waved it off regardless.

He offered a slight smile back. She was rather polite, as strange as she had been when brought here. Kerta was certainly the mystery to unravel.

"That is good to hear." He answered. He motioned forward, hoping to take a brief walk. True enough, he had duties to attend to. For the moment, they could wait. "I hope no one has given you trouble."

There were very few who would, especially under his watch. He'd put a stop to those kind of things before they could really start.

He lifted his head a little, glancing at her again when she spoke up. It was a brief question, nothing more. Ah Tabai hummed slightly before answering.

"Merely curious," he answered, motioning toward the woman. "You are learning plenty of us but we know little of you. I'm, more or less, seeking answers."

If anything, that was straight forward. He wasn't sure if he'd gain those answers. It was worth a shot, in the end.

----|X|----

A larger smile tugged at her lips as he spoke up. She'd be the first to admit that she liked the sound of his voice. His thick accent was somewhat charming, in a way.

She took his invitation, seating herself beside him when she'd made it to the porch. Sometimes, it was a wonder how someone so relaxed could end up this successful. Most people she'd seen or worked with were rather grouchy, snapping at their workers more times than not.

"Mhmm." She started, finding herself rather glad she was off her feet. "Figured you could us them."

It was obvious that was the case. His stomach growled. She couldn't help but grin, making no mention of the sound. It wasn't as if he minded, after all.

She offered the basket, allowing him to poke around in it. There was a bit of bread, cheese, and jam. It would be a small amount to hold him until he'd have to get his own supplies. No doubt, others had already offered a thing or two themselves.

"How went the trip?" She inquired, glancing back toward him.

She glanced the way he gestured, the dirt path empty of others and of animals for the time being. It was one that wasn't so important, merely there for those who wandered as Kerta had taken up doing. Sparing a nod she started off with him, her feet padding along the dirt and stones once more. Ah Tabai's steps were a little quieter than her own, no doubt from years of practice.

"No, they've all been rather accommodating," admitted Kerta. And they had been even if she wasn't one of them. It was a little strange to be honest though she wouldn't complain.

She glanced Ah Tabai's way as he answered her own question. She hadn't thought she was much to think about! Still, Kerta couldn't deny that was kind of the case. It wasn't like she had many who were asking questions though.

"It wouldn't hurt," she said, brushing her bangs out of her face. Kerta long since had a habit of toying with her hair off and on as it was. "Though there's not much interesting to tell."

Now it was only a matter of what Ah Tabai might ask about. In truth Kerta wasn't even sure where he'd start. The only thing of interest she could think of was her abandonment on that island and even that was hard to discuss. Kerta wasn't entirely sure she even knew what had happened to land her there in the first place.

----[x]----
Amber was smiling even before she sat down, situating her dress around her better and slipping the basket nearer to him. Manuel dragged the little thing closer, tugging the clothe off of it and digging about inside. Bread, cheese, jam—the usual though he wouldn't complain. The simple things made life, after all.

"It is much appreciated," he started, digging out a wedge of cheese and pinching off a good chunk of bread. He didn't bother making any elaborate sandwich out of them, there wasn't much point.

He chewed thoughtfully at the cheese first, sparing a glance around at the farm again. A few of his farm hands were wandering off, getting a break while the handful of slaves would be at it for awhile longer. Manuel only turned his attention away from them and his coffee plants when Amber spoke up.

Offering a shrug he said "it went as it always did, I assure you there wasn't much of any excitement to be had."

Really it was true. Manuel was good at getting information as patient as he was and so this was often the task he was assigned. He didn't begrudge the Templars this however though he sometimes did question his place among them. Why did they needed a farmer, after all?

Manuel shook his head, gesturing to Amber instead. Perhaps she had something of interest to speak up. Who knew what happened about the area while he was away. It was worth a shot anyways.

"Tell me, anyone up to anything here while I was away?"

He was glad that no one seemed to be bothering her. That was a bit of a relief. If there had been a case, he would have taken care of it quickly. He couldn't have his own allies causing problems for others.

"Good," He answered, sparing a nod in response.

It was quiet for a brief few moments. He glanced around the area. For the most part, things were peaceful. These days wouldn't remain. They really never did.

Eventually, he glanced back toward her. She seemed to be thinking it over. Soon after, she agreed. He was glad to hear it. He couldn't help but allow that curiosity burn in him.

"How did you end up on that island?" He asked, watching her expression carefully.

This girl really was odd though, where she was from or who she was remained a mystery. She seemed less than confident that she had much to say however. He wondered why that was.

----|X|----

It didn't take him long to start into the basket. It was a common thing, anymore. Normally, though, she'd drop it off and head back home. It seemed he was in the mood for company today.

She waved off his thanks, though smiled. People took care of one another out here. It was the right thing to do.

She hummed briefly in response. It was an answer that was more or less common. He wasn't much of a trouble maker, or so she thought. Who knew what happened on those trips. He often said things like this, after all.

"Well, I'm glad you're back." She answered in return.

When the question was directed to her, she shook her head slightly. There wasn't much going on here. At least, not that she had seen.

"Nothing," she answered. "Though, we've been seeing those pirates about more often now, for some reason."

No one really knew what they were searching for. Amber figured they were just grateful they hadn't been raided.

Even with his hood it was easy to tell when he tilted his head this way and that, looking around the area. Sunlight streamed through the trees above, chasing away a lot of the darker shadows that would have been there. There were still plenty of places for animals to linger and hide in as well as any experienced assassin.

Eventually his gaze seemed to turn to her, studying her. In a way Kerta didn't have to look to know this, she could swear she could feel his gaze on her. Kerta wondered what he might have seen in her expression and gestures. Ah Tabai seemed like someone who knew how to read a person well.

The first question didn't surprise her so much as Kerta was expecting it. It seemed to be on everyone's minds here or at least the ones who approached her. She sighed, unsure of how to answer it.

"I'm really not sure," she said slowly, "I remember little things but everything up until I woke up on that island's a blank."

She paused, thinking back on it. No matter how far she delved into it in the past few weeks she couldn't get a clearer picture. The things she did remember didn't help to paint any sort of clear picture either.

"I remember the smell of rain and dirt and a cold breeze but that's about it before I woke up there," she elaborated.

----[x]----
From the corner of his eye Manuel caught the brief wave of her hand. He didn't think much of it, instead choosing to fill his stomach for the time being. No need to turn down food especially from one who dropped by often. It was easier to get through life when one had connections all over, after all, even for a simple coffee farmer.

He continued to chew thoughtfully, seeing no need to rush. Usually he didn't. His plants didn't go anywhere and it only served to make things sloppy if he didn't stay patient.

"Ah, I should certainly hope so," he said, "else-wise you showing up every time I make a return might raise a few questions."

Manuel hummed once after he he received Amber's answer. Of course the pirates would target this place. Manuel didn't sell any sugar but he knew of a small plantation nearby that did. That alone was a prime target for those sorts.

"I would have thought it obvious, Amber, they see a profit to be had," Manuel explained before finishing off the wedge of cheese. He was quick to start on the chunk of bread in his hand afterwards.

Ah Tabai waited on her answer patiently. He wouldn't rush her. These seemed to be things she had to think about. Who knew if she really even recalled how she had gotten there. He was merely chancing that information.

He did keep an eye out for the both of them however. This place still held it's dangers. It was far too easy to forget that. Ah Tabai would rather her escape injury if he could help it.

Minutes passed before a sigh passed her lips. He watched her briefly, waiting on her answer.

He listened patiently, going over the information in his head. It wasn't much. Like he suspected, she didn't recall much about it. The details were very few and fuzzy, it seemed. Still, he gave a slight nod in response.

"I see," he answered. "So that is still much of a mystery."

Until she recalled what had happened, they couldn't unravel it. He hoped there was a time she would recall. His own curiosity needed to be quashed as well.

"Then you've no family or friends to contact?" He carried on. "Are you alone?"

----|X|----

She leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees. For the most part, it was quiet. She could hear the chatter of birds nearby, a sound she'd grown to rather like. Amber took a deep interest in them and liked to try and pick out their calls.

He didn't seem to be in a rush to answer her. She didn't mind that fact. Honestly, it was this kind of nature that drew her to him. He was more relaxed than most, extremely patient as well. She took solace in that nature.

So when he next spoke up, she felt her cheeks warm a little. It wasn't as if some didn't talk already. Regardless, she brushed it off. There were worse things.

She glanced back toward him only when he spoke about what the pirates were aiming for. Of course it would be someone's own profit they were seeking. They'd already caused problems enough.

"I wish things didn't have to come to that." She responded briefly. "But what can one do?"

There was very little, in fact. She just held out hope that no one got hurt. It wasn't an uncommon thing, after all. Some had been here before.

For his part Ah Tabai didn't rush an answer out of her. From what she knew of him he was a patient man, however. It was something that Kerta could appreciate, especially at the moment when she had to stop and try to recall what she could. There wasn't much to say about it however, despite her best efforts otherwise.

When she shared what she could remember Ah Tabai took a moment, looking as if he were mulling over it. What he had to say seemed absentminded, as if trying to piece together something in his head at the same time.

"For the moment," she said, "hopefully."

The next question wasn't too much of a surprise, not really. Even so she took a moment to answer that too. It wasn't like she'd been particularly close to a lot of people that she could recall. For the most part she had work acquaintances and some family before she/d gotten on with her own life.

"My parents might wonder where I'm at but I haven't talked to them in two years," she admitted finally.

To Kerta it was a satisfactory answer. Anyone else had their own lives to go about after all, there wasn't much she'd expect from them except for maybe a passing thought about her at best. There wasn't any need to point them out.

----[x]----
Amber didn't say anything right away. Instead she'd shifted in her seat, her hair falling over her shoulder as she usually had it. There wasn't much to say at the moment he figured or else she might have said something. Manuel could only just catch the look on her face before it was hidden by her hair anyways.

It wasn't until the talk turned to pirates did Amber talk again. There wasn't much to react to her answer with. Manuel had heard that and other sentiments like it before as the pirates grew as more and more of a prominent feature of the ocean. Talking and wishing did little to change things.

"There is plenty one can do if they know where to work," Manuel pointed out simply though said no more. Most of the time it took guts and skill to do just what was required. Somehow he couldn't see Amber out doing any of what combating pirates would take.

Finishing his chunk of bread he brushed the crumbs from his hands and pants. A moment after he was laying back on his porch, arms folded behind his head. His wide-brimmed hat fell over his face and that's where he left it for the time being.

"Have the day off, Amber?" he wondered. Usually she was running odd jobs, as far as he knew. Or had she picked up a steadier job while he was away?

In the very least, she didn't feel the need to rush about her answers. If there was something that she recalled in that time, he would be grateful to hear it. He didn't have any idea if this girl was somehow involved with their war or not. If she was, it was best to keep her under their protection.

Still, little details seemed to escape her. He didn't mind this. Maybe they would come back in time. He could only assume as much for the moment.

Place his hands behind his back, he continued to glance about. Things were quiet for the most part, though the day was warm. It kept most out of trouble.

"If you recall any finer details, do not be afraid to tell me." He brought up. "It may be for the best."

Whether that was entirely true or not remained to be seen. Until she recalled these things, he couldn't say. It was a bit of a shame, honestly. He held out hope that her memory would return to her soon.

Her next answer was simple. He mulled over it briefly. It was a blunt thing. He didn't mind this. Some people had trouble with their families, after all.

"Cut ties, hmm?" He inquired. He gave a dismissive wave. "You do not have to answer that, merely thinking out loud."

What had caused that, he had to wonder? It wasn't much of his business however. If she wished to tell him someday, he didn't doubt that she would.

----|X|----

It was quiet for a few brief minutes. Not that she was bothered by it. It gave her time for her face to cool. A nice breeze passed by. During a warm day like this, the breeze was a relief.

He'd answered her briefly afterward. She didn't glance back though, mulled over his answer. She wasn't the kind to start fights, never had been. Up against pirates? It was a fool thing if she tried to do anything.

A moment later, he'd leaned back, tucking his hands behind his head. Amber turned her head, watching him for a brief moment. Carefully reaching out, she lifted the brim of his hat.

"Are you planning to stay here all day?" She asked, a light tone in her voice. This was something common. A bit of teasing never bothered him.

She let the brim of his hat fall back into place. A short hum left her in response. It wasn't as if she had much to do in the afternoons.

"I've been working as a stable hand." She answered. "Most of the work is in the early morning or later in the evening. My afternoons are pretty much free, if I don't have an odd job to tend to."

She preferred her time like this, however. If she did have to work in the afternoons, it at least gave her a little time to get to it. For the moment, she was free from the work and was grateful for it. Anymore, it was difficult to keep up.

Ah Tabai seemed to take his time mulling over what few pieces he now had. Honestly there wasn't much but maybe he was able to make more sense of it then Kerta could. This whole place was strange to her as it was. After all she wasn't a native to the West Indies and had never lived anywhere near them until now.

In the silence Kerta could hear the birds calling to one another among the tree tops. They weren't anything that sounded familiar to her either. Kerta didn't say anything about that for the moment however. Over the weeks she'd been on that island and then in Tulum it wasn't as if they were as foreign to her as they had been originally.

Eventually he did speak up again, requesting any other details Kerta might end up recalling over time. She couldn't promise much but maybe it was the least she could do.

"We'll see if anything pops up," she said simply.

There was another brief bit of silence as Ah Tabai seemed to mull over what she said. She couldn't be the first he'd met who had no one she or he would want to return to if they could help it. She found herself a little surprised when he talked about ties being cut before he dismissed the question as soon as he'd asked it.

"If you're sure," Kerta seemed to sing-song.

She carried on down the path, Ah Tabai didn't seem to have any set destination in mind. The path still went strong as it was so there wasn't much to worry about unless a wild animal decided to stroll on by. She'd been warned of a fair few that were dangerous around here.

----[x]----
Manuel kept his eyes closed even when he felt his hat lift a little off his face. It didn't take smarts to know who it was anyhow, Amber was the only one next to him. She was taunting him a little again as per usual.

He gave a shrug in return. "Perhaps" was his simple answer. A moment after and she'd let his hat fall back into place, properly hiding his face once more.

If he listened Manuel could hear some idle chatter nearby. It didn't mean much to him, however. So long as the plants grew as well as they could Manuel didn't see much need to get stressed. The coffee beans pretty much grew themselves after all.

Amber answered him quickly. So she had gotten some work then, he'd wondered when that would happen. It was nice to know something had changed while he'd been away. It often felt like nothing ever did here.

"That's good to hear," Manuel noted. He rolled his shoulders than, glad to be able to relax once more. It felt like too long, it always did on those ships.

Kerta seemed to take some amount of interest in this place. What was familiar to him and his allies, were completely foreign to her. This was one of many things that made her so foreign to this place.

Idly, he started naming birds that were calling out to one another. It was a simple thing. He'd known so many of them that it was very easy to pick out.

"The birds are nice," he explained. "But there are other animals you should look out for. Less friendly."

In the very least, he was being blunt about it. Wandering too far could cost her her life if she wasn't careful. It was obvious enough that she didn't know much of this place as it was. He'd rather not see her mulled by some wild animal.

"Is there anything you are particular interest in here?" He asked afterward.

He had no destination in mind. The idle conversation was a pleasant one, at least, he hoped it to be. While Kerta appeared to smile and seem content, it was hard to say. Who knew what she was really feeling.

----|X|----

Like always, his responses were lax. He was so easy going, didn't get angry when she started doing nonsense like this. She smiled, feeling a little more relaxed herself. That kind of mood could be infectious to the right people.

His reply was brief, something she was used to. He didn't do a lot of talking and in turn, Amber didn't either. Part of her hoped that he enjoyed these quiet visits when she had the time to stick around.

She watched the fields quietly. Some still remained within the fields. Briefly, she wondered how his planets were doing. They were probably well. It was rare when things didn't go well here.

After several moments of silent debate, she laid back as well, starting up at the ceiling of the porch. She folded her hands on her stomach, listening to the sounds around them.

She closed her eyes briefly, listening to bird calls. There were far fewer now than there would be in the later evening or morning.

He'd grown quiet for a time, their soft footsteps mingling with the rustling leaves in the breeze and the bird calls. When Ah Tabai's voice did reach her ears again it took her a moment to realize he was naming off the different birds to the matching calls. Occasionally he'd point one out in the branches before it would dart away or disappear from view.

Kerta did her best to store the names away for later though she wasn't sure if she'd be able to recall which were which right away. Talk shifted again, however, mentioning some of the other animals that lived on the island.

"So I've heard. Someone else was talking about jaguars and crocodiles," she said, glancing towards Ah Tabai. A thoughtful look crossed her face. "Or was it alligators? I can never tell the difference..."

She shook her head after, chasing away the thought. It wasn't an important one, just her rambling about nothing. Her gaze drifted back to him as he asked her something new. A thoughtful look crossed her face at that. Was there anything she particularly wanted to see around here? Kerta felt there was a lot she still had to see...

"Does a little bit of everything count?" she offered.

----[x]----
Amber grew quiet after that though this didn't particularly bother Manuel. It was often that they lapsed into such cases. There wasn't any need, he felt, for continued conversation all of the time. If that was the case things usually ended up growing strained and his patience tested.

Truthfully, it wasn't often that Manuel felt that his patience could be broken but sometimes, with the right kind of person it happened. He liked to pride himself on being able to maintain face, however. There was no need to lose his cool over little things.

Eventually he heard her shift beside him, a soft thump following after. Manuel scoffed, more out of thought than anything else. It seemed she had nothing else to do though he didn't much mind the company. If nothing else it would give others pause to come about and bother him for some time. Sometimes Manuel quite disliked large gatherings.

He began to tap his heel along the dirt, an idle motion. It followed some sort of nonsensical rhythm. If Manuel had to be honest he didn't really have a sense of rhythm and beat anyhow. Usually he just tapped his foot to pass some time or whistled tunelessly.

If Amber was bothered by the quiet she said nothing. He didn't think that she was of else she could just get up and leave.

The silences, as short as it was, didn't bother him. These things took some amount of thought before action. He'd rather she took her time with these kinds of things.

In the very least, she was adjusting. The worst case could have been the opposite. She bounced back rather quickly, though he had an idea as to why. On that island for so long, she must have been rather open to the idea of getting close to people again.

An amused scoff left him when she spoke up. She was getting used to the wilderness as it was, though some things she obviously hadn't picked up on.

"Crocodiles," he answered for her. "Though, either one would kill you if they had the chance."

It was what it came down to out here. It was a kill or be killed world. Dropping their guard could bare heavy consequences.

She mulled over his question for a bit. She seemed like the curious type, or from what he'd seen of her, it was that much. Kerta displayed not staying in one place too long before she was off doing something else. The answer didn't so much surprise him when it did finally come about.

"It does," he said, sparring her a glance. Even now, she appeared a little more thoughtful about it. "Perhaps that can be arranged. Give you a little to do around here."

The offer was there, whether she wanted to think it over or not. He wouldn't be so callous as to deny her these things.

----|X|----

The quiet didn't bother her. She could hear him tap his heel in some off rhythm. Maybe it wasn't even a rhythm at all. Last she'd heard him whistle, there was no real tune to it.

Briefly, she wondered about those pirates again. When they were going to make a move. It was almost guaranteed now, with how long they'd be in the area. The sugar plantation might be their goal . That didn't mean they might not wrack havoc on the other places here as well.

She tried to shove it away, in favor of closing her eyes again. When she thought about it, it seemed a long time since she'd actually just laid down like this. Most days were filled with work or odd jobs here and there between breaks.

Peeking up at the sky, the sun was slowly starting to move from the highest point. She still had plenty of time to laze about unless someone needed her.

She spotted a bird that had landed on the porches rail. Amber watched it quietly, listening as it started to chirp softly. He was a pretty little thing and she couldn't help but smile at him.

Ah Tabai seemed to grow thoughtful in the silences that followed, however brief they were. Kerta figured that was a given. Besides the first time she’d spoken to him upon arriving she had been mostly on her own, staying out of the way of many of the assassins. Other than the occasional chance when someone invited her to join for some of the easier training or in a conversation or so it had remained that way. It might have been odd to see.

In truth she’d found herself a little taken with Ah Tabai, it left her a little shy about approaching him. Not really knowing anyone here either didn’t help. Maybe in time the feeling would dispel but for the moment it left her a little reluctant to stray out to actively talk to anyone of her own accord, much less to Ah Tabai.

Eventually they spoke of the wildlife in Tulum, or rather, the more dangerous ones. It wasn’t the first time someone had thought to warn her and she had caught a glimpse of one of the crocodiles lurking in the wetter areas of the place.

That, in itself, was not a long topic. It almost seemed as if Ah Tabai had something else in mind. At her answer he didn’t waste time in answering either, perhaps having mulled over this very idea before coming to find her. Kerta blinked, glancing to him and trying to figure out what he had in mind from his expression. It gave nothing away though he seemed to look just a little amused at this change in her.

“Well, l-like what?” she wondered, a little hesitant even now. Kerta didn’t exactly want to make a fool of herself in front of Ah Tabai.

----[x]----
The quiet around them was well appreciated. It had been so noisy on that ship to and from his destination and it would have been Manuel’s luck that the assassin that they had wanted information on had left the city before he’d arrived. Very minimal could be found on the man though Manuel had managed and then come back home. It was nice to be away from all of that for awhile.

Amber didn’t seem inclined to leave yet, maybe she didn’t really have anywhere to be herself. That was odd though things had changed while he’d been gone. The trip hadn’t been a short one and he’d been away from his farm for some months.

He shifted and the sound of hurried wings reached his ears. Manuel lifted his head, tucking his hat back just enough to see what it was. The little bird was already some distance away, settling in on the fence and looking indignant in the way it fluffed its feathers out. Manuel snorted at that.

A moment later Manuel had laid back down, hat back in place. “Little Amber, I hope I’m not stealing away too much of your time today,” he said finally.

If that was the case he’d hoped she’d have the good sense to part ways with him for the day. As of now she seemed content in laying on the porch with him. Perhaps she really had liked sharing this time with him. She certainly made it a habit to see him when she could.

The silence had fallen between them again. Ah Tabai didn't mind it. She seemed to like coming in and out of it. She was adjusting but it didn't mean that she was quite ready to open up. It could be a long while before Kerta even managed that.

She glanced at her momentarily. A thoughtful expression had over taken her features. He'd seen that one quite a bit when he watched her. She was always in thought, it seemed.

He knew she didn't know many here. In fact, that kept her from branching out. She might have been shy or simply didn't know how to approach the others here. Kerta seemed to express that with him, after all.

The offer he'd made caught her attention however. He offered a smile, finding how surprised she was rather endearing. He found himself glad that she was at last taking to the idea.

He shrugged lightly in response. "Anything, I suppose." He answered. "Anything you might take interest on, we can focus on. Or perhaps you would like to learn something new?"

Kerta looked like the type who wanted to learn. The way she wondered and looked at the plant life or animals, trying to figure them out without so much as asking a question. There were other things he'd taken notice to as well. Ah Tabai found him watching her when she could.

"If you'd rather think about it and give me an answer later, I can wait." He continued. "It might be a difficult thing to decide upon."

----|X|----

The bird, startled by his movement, flew off. She appreciated the way the little birds wings spread before he settled back down a ways from the porch. The poor little thing looked a little startled, puffing out his feathers as he had.

"Now look what you did," She started lightly. "Scared him off."

She settled back down, quiet again. He seemed content that way, laying right back down. She spared a glance before staring upward again. The question hadn't been one expected.

Months ago, she was always busy. After the fire, she had to work to get back on her feet, doing quite a few odd jobs just to get a little money. The fire had been devastating, engulfing everything. Her parents had perished in it as well, leaving her to fend for herself.

"I'm not as busy as I used to be." She finally answered. "Managed to get back on my feet, with some help."

In the very least, she wasn't homeless or a begger. There were other alternatives as well. She found herself far too proud to end up like that. So, despite her grief, she worked. That was the most she could manage.

"Unless you'd...prefer I go?" She inquired, glancing at him. His face was hidden once again by that large hat again.

This was probably the first time that she spent this much time here. Most times, she had to be here and gone before any real conversation could begin. Honestly, she rather did like his lax nature. Maybe that's why she wanted to spend a little more time here.

Every so often during the silences that passed between them Kerta could swear she could feel Ah Tabai’s gaze on her. She tried not to be so conscious of it but it was a little difficult to achieve. She’d gotten rather smitten of him and because of it she was almost too aware of the things he did or said when he was around.

When she’d turned back to him, prodding for more. Whatever he had in mind to teach her, well, it got Kerta curious and she couldn’t deny that. There was some eagerness there as well, wanting to do something other than wander and stay out of everyone’s way.

She tipped her head to one side, unsure of what she could ask to learn about. The option was up to her now though Kerta had so many things she would want to learn from the assassins. They had such interesting styles and weapons to use on top of that...

Kerta blinked again, glancing toward Ah Tabai. It seemed he’d picked up on the difficulty she had deciding. The offer to give her some time to think it true left her appreciative, more so than before. It was clear now that he had a good grasp of people in general, or at least of her. Maybe she wasn’t so difficult to read.

“Mmm, I’ll be sure to,” she said with a nod. A pause followed as another thoughtful look crossed her face. “I’m not taking you away from anything more important, am I?”

It was a question she worried about when she was with any of the assassins for any extended period of time. They were all busy, either training or resting or heading off on a mission. Kerta hated to think that she was bothering any of them from those things.

----[x]----
Manuel snorted as he laid back. Of course Amber would pick at him for scaring away a bird. If only she knew what else he’d once scared away. He’d keep quiet about that, however. There was no point in bringing up his past before he’d come here and settled in as a coffee farmer.

“The little thing will live,” he said simply.

He could hear her shuffling about after that, maybe getting into a more comfortable position. With his hat over his face he couldn’t be sure. It was nice to just lay back and doze, however, after the last few weeks he’d had. Manuel figured he deserved the rest.

It took her a moment to actually answer him, perhaps mulling over what he’d said. If that was the case than Manuel wouldn’t break it, waiting patiently instead. It seemed to be the way she preferred things. The last time he’d seen her with someone more rushed in life she’d appeared frustrated by him. At least that had been the impression that Manuel had gotten from that situation.

He lifted his hat high enough to shoot Amber a look for her question. He hadn’t said that and she knew it. “Merely curious,” he answered simply before lowering it back into place. “No need for conclusion jumping now.”

Really, it was just a surprise to him. In the past she’d stayed no longer than a few minutes. Now she was able to lounge about with him. It would have left any man curious.

He knew that she was feeling his eyes on her. Despite her efforts to hide it, she appeared shy, awkward even. He wouldn't have written her off as someone who was bashful. Then again, he knew very little about her as well. This was the first time they'd really spoken.

She was quiet for some time, perhaps thinking it through. On and off, he noticed that she would tip her head to one side or the other. It must have been an absentminded habit.

There was a lot to mull over, he was sure. It wasn't all combat. There was history to learn as well. He knew that she had expressed a lot of interest in that as well.

Eventually, she answered. Ah Tabai gave a nod in response. At least she'd be thinking about it.

"You can come find me at anytime," He answered. "You don't have to be frightened to." He paused, watching her expression again. "Or perhaps it's something else?"

He couldn't be sure. Honestly, it looked like her cheeks warmed a little. An amused smile tugged at his lips. He turned his head, surveying the area briefly before her next question.

"Not too much at the moment," He responded. "Do you think you're a bother?"

It seemed to be the case, with the way she acted. He hoped that she'd take up branching out a little more. He'd like to see her confidence grow a tad.

----|X|----

He almost seemed amused as he leaned back. She had to wonder about. Maybe it was her words or something else. She didn't ask. He didn't give much about his own past or why he decided to settle here. Then again, she never had much time to inquire about it either.

She raised her gaze, watching the bird again. It flew off when startled again. She had to wonder where it would be off to. A short hum left her again.

Amber laid back, closing her eyes again. It wasn't often that she felt this relaxed. Not since her parents died. There were always worries. Regardless, at the moment, she was alright.

He was patient, waiting on her to answer. She glanced back toward him briefly, catching the look. She couldn't help but feel a little amused. It was a change of pace for him, after all.

"'Course not," she answered briefly.

It fell silent again. She rubbed at her eyes briefly, feeling a little drowsy. She couldn't recall a time she'd been tired in the afternoon. Maybe she was working herself too hard at this point. At this rate, she'd fall asleep here.

Kerta must have been taking quite a bit of time thinking over his offer given the thing he said, breaking the silence. Still, there was quite a bit to learn from everyone. Kerta didn’t want to make a decision she’d later regret or find boring after initially starting. Still, she was broken out of those thoughts at his insistence to take her time thinking it over.

She’d turned to him while he spoke. Kerta blinked at the things he said. Did she appear scared of him? She’d figured it was polite not to take up his time when there were so many other things to be done—at least that had been her justification. In truth she found herself shy around him that first and, until now, the only time they’d spoken and hadn’t wanted to do anything stupid or foolish around him. It had her keeping her distance, if nothing else.

Kerta started a little at his question, her face feeling a little warmer than it should have. Was he that perceptive or was she just that easy to read? “N-no, it’s nothing,” she answered.

Though she’d ducked her head a little, peering up at Ah Tabai through her hair she could swear she spotted a smile on his lips before he’d turned away. Kerta had to admit that he had a very nice smile, one that made her heart pound a little harder.

His answer made her blink again. “I’d rather not be in the way,” she admitted softly. She had very little knowledge about fighting and the like, just enough to do a bit of damage if she had to and that was that. With what the assassins strove for, well... Kerta didn’t exactly measure up.

Amber grew quiet again, perhaps losing herself in her thoughts. She seemed like the sort of person to do just that. Granted, Manuel hadn’t been with her for any extensive sort of time like this, learning about her in longer visits was new. Still, she didn’t seem inclined to push conversation for them to get up and do anything.

Manuel couldn’t be sure what she was up to. For all he knew she might be watching anyone in the nearby area. There were quite a few slaves that he had to help with the harvest once the beans were ready. A guard or so always ran patrol as well, keeping his livelihood safe. It was nowhere near as guarded as sugar plantations were, however.

Eventually she’d answered and it sounded like a light thing. Manuel was grateful for that. He wasn’t one for arguing and debating. That was all just so much of a hassle anymore. He got enough of that form his higher ups in the Order.

Eyes closed, the time ticked by slowly, he was sure. Whatever Amber was up to it wasn’t noisy. Perhaps she was merely enjoying the day. The humidity wasn’t nearly as high as it usually was this time of day and for that Manuel was a little thankful. It could be unbearable sometimes.

“Not dozing on me, are you?” he wondered briefly, hat still firmly in place over his face.

As he thought, she'd slipped into a little bit of a bashful side. She ducked her head, barely peering up at him before he turned away. Ah Tabai had to resist a chuckle. Here, he had thought the young woman might have simply been the silent, determined type.

Here, she was displaying a shy side. There was much to learn about her, he found. This really being the first time they'd spoken, he was finding his assumptions might have been wrong. Only time would tell.

She seemed to struggle finding an answer. Kerta looked down right embarrassed about it as well. Eventually, one sputtered forth. He offered a light scoff.

"If there's something on your mind, you can always speak it." He answered. "Nothing to worry about...or rather be shy over."

Glancing back, that comment did get a bit of a reaction out of her. He resisted a shake of the head. He hadn't made this kind of banter with someone in a long while. The change of pace was nice but there was a nagging in him as well. He tried to bury that down for a while.

He spared another smile her way as she finally managed to reign herself in. A wave of the hand followed. Is that what she thought? Ah Tabai wasn't sure how he felt about that.

"I assure you, you won't be in the way." He answered. "And you are free to quit at any time. You'll find a place here, I am sure."

It was the best that he could offer. Kerta still seemed a bit lost here, alone. He couldn't help but feel a tad bad about it. Maybe soon, she'd be able to branch out a little easier.

----|X|----

Amber had barely shifted after that. Eyes closed, she had fully intentions of falling asleep. She'd been having problems with it anyways. Nightmares, occasionally violent, kept her awake at night. Working at that crack of dawn didn't help.

It was warm out, a little comfortable now. Despite how hot it could get here, it wasn't nearly as bad as it could be. She normally didn't care for the heat. For the moment, it wasn't a bother.

She wasn't sure how many minutes had passed by. Still, she didn't mind it either. Amber had been a bit of a busy body as of recent. Kicking back was a bit of a relief.

Eventually, a simple question pulled her from her doze. She rolled over onto her side, blinking them open again. She watched him briefly, his face still covered by that hat. How he didn't doze off, she wasn't sure.

"Well, I was." She answered honestly, her tone a little light. "Seems like a nice day for a nap."

Amber hadn't indulged in such things for a long while. It almost seemed foreign. She had to admit, with the lack of sleep, it might have helped. If only she could find a way to get the dreams under control. That could have easily helped.

"How is it you're not?" She asked lightly. "Unless you're staring at the inside of that hat you're so fond of."

She didn't admit it but she was rather fond of that hat as well. It fit him rather well. That seemed a bit of a large confession, so she kept it silent. For the moment, at least.

Kerta fought not to frown too deeply. Her face burned a little, feeling foolish, just the thing she hadn’t wanted to appear, especially in front of Ah Tabai. With the way he’d turned away it was impossible to tell what he was thinking too. It was a little difficult to shake the thought away that she must have looked or sounded like an idiot. It wasn’t often she found herself fancying very many men and now...

She let her own gaze drift, unaccustomed to feeling so unconfident and out of place. Really, that’s all she was in this place though. It was a difficult feeling to get over when she was the odd one out.

It wasn’t long that she’d glanced away, when Ah Tabai spoke up it drew her attention back him. At the mention of shyness her face burned a little. She’d futilely hoped that it hadn’t been that apparent but it had always been obvious when she was.

“Mmm, I’ll keep that in mind,” she said carefully.

It was a relief when her face felt cooler. The change in topics, away from her behavior, no doubt helped. Kerta definitely felt better about the situation in a whole now that she wasn’t looking as stupid.

She tucked her hair behind her ear, though it did little to keep her bangs out of her face. Sparing a quick glance up at Ah Tabai again it was just another thing she’d noticed. Of everyone in Tulum she was the only one without a hood. It was just something else that must have made her easier to spot.

For a moment she was quiet after he’d spoken. He sounded sure what he said though why wouldn’t he be? Being the mentor he must have seen many come and go as it was. Still, it was the tail end of what he said that had Kerta’s attention.

“Thank you.”

----[x]----
Minutes must have ticked on by without his knowledge. From the porch’s shade and his own hat Manuel couldn’t make much of the how much the sun moved. He didn’t exactly feel very motivated to be up and moving, however. For all he knew Amber must have dozed off on him. In any case he hadn’t heard her moving around.

When he asked she finally moved, hitting the porch a little and making more noise. Manuel figured her movements might be a little groggy with the way things sounded. He still hadn’t picked up his hat to check or even really opened his eyes.

“Perhaps,” he said lightly. It definitely wasn’t nearly as sticky and hot as it could be. “Though I would hate for you to miss any appointments you might have this afternoon, if any.”

His eyebrow raised at the question. How was he not dozing off? That was a good question. Manuel figured it was merely because he had practice in sitting back and just listening around for any sort of trouble. That, thankfully, never seemed to be the case but his past kept him alert to any sort of possibilities.

Finally Manuel offered a shrug. “Perhaps you have figured me out,” Manuel said just as lightly. Whatever she had to say to that, well, Manuel figured he’d find out in a moment.

She seemed uncomfortable with the conversation. The poor girl was on the spot. He figured it might be best to cool it for the moment. Best not offend her for no reason. He didn't want to be that much of a bother. Her confidence already seemed a bit low as it was.

He waved a dismissive hand, as if to say not to worry about it. He wasn't quite sure why she was so bashful around him. It wasn't the first time he knew of a woman who fancied him. She showed the signs, though left this unmentioned.

It had been a long time since he'd opened up that part of his life. Not after his wife had died. That was a chapter of his life he'd rather not relive.

He spared a smile after she'd finally spoken. Her face had cooled, in the very least. He worried briefly with how it had rushed to her face so quickly.

"You are free to talk if you'd like." He carried on. "There's always someone willing to listen."

It was a bit of an invitation. At least she'd know that he would listen to her. Not simply because he liked to hear stories of tragedy or the mystery surrounding her. She simply needed to say what might be on her mind.

Ah Tabai shook his head in response. "It is nothing," he answered. "This is your home now. It's best you find your place here."

He held out hopes that it would be easier for her to adjust with time. He, as well as others, helping her might bring about some solace. She didn't seem to be able to reach out well, afraid to be a bother it seemed. Ah Tabai wonder if that was a habit he could break. She wasn't a bother to anyone, though she seemed to think that was the case. Nipping that view in the bud early would be the best for her, if only so she might others to turn to if she needed it.

----|X|----

She offered a smile that he wouldn't see. He seemed to like to laze about. Who knew however. Maybe he was listening around them. For what, she could only assume. Maybe trouble or something else. She didn't know his livelihood as well as other farmers would.

In the very least, his replies were light. She found that she was rather fond of that fact. Most men she spoke to were so patient or willing to speak so easily. She didn't quite blame them but the change of pace was nice.

"No worries about that." She answered lightly. "Won't have anything to do until the later evening anyways."

Tending to the horses would take up the rest of her evening. It always did. She didn't complain. She liked the animals as it was. It was easier dealing with them than with some people.

It took him a bit before he actually answered her next question. It was a simple answer, still rather light. She was finding she liked this kind of thing. Still, the statement left her wonder. She really didn't know too much about him.

"That's it," she responded lightly. She paused for a brief moment, studying him. There was always a look about him, though, she'd never really brought it up.

"You look like a pirate." She finally stated. "You always kind of have, at least."

Maybe it was just his appearance. He certainly didn't appear like the typical farmer. Amber, of course, might have just been letting her imagination run wild.

He'd waved a hand soon after, as if waving away the previous conversation. Kerta wasn't about to complain about that, she must have looked like an idiot anyways. Whatever he thought about the matter he kept it to himself. Kerta had to wonder about that though didn't pry, it wasn't her place to do that.

Kerta blinked as Ah Tabai turned to her again, a smile in place on his lips once more. She had to admit he looked quite handsome when he smiled like that. That was a thought she kept to herself though even as she nodded in answer to what he said.

She spared a nod and an "okay" in answer, unsure of what else she could say to that invitation. Kerta was one person, after all, there were a lot more out there who needed attention. At least that's how Kerta justified keeping to herself around here. She wouldn't be pointing that out, however.

Ah Tabai shook away her thanks simply. It was a little strange to think of this place as home. Her memory wasn't what it should be, she knew that, but she couldn't ever recall living near a place like this in her life. Boring looking homes in neat little rows or out on their own by large fields were what came to mind at that word. Kerta had to admit that the change was a nice one regardless of the unfamiliarity of it.

"Ah, if you're sure," Kerta said finally, drawing away from those thoughts.

They continued to walk, having circled back around on the path and towards the main area that was Tulum. Around them all sorts of people wandered, visited or stood guard on more important paths. It was something that Kerta found she liked to see, taking note of the different skin tones and the way this person walked compared to that one.

----[x]----
In the bursts of quiet it was impossible to tell what Amber might be up to. Manuel could only guess at what she might be doing with the sounds that reached his ears. Eventually she spoke again, her voice light and sounding a little drowsy. He had to wonder about that...

"Well, if you're quite sure you have the time to waste," he said reaching out to pat the porch beside him again. His fingers brushed past her arm as he did before he brought it back, laying his hand over his stomach.

Another stint of silence though that was good. If there were no shouts or alarm bells ringing than all was well. Manuel would take some time and make a few rounds about his farm later but for now he was feeling a little lax. Though it always seemed as if he indulged in lazing about that wasn't quite the case. Now was one such time in which he was.

His eyebrow raised higher at Amber's statement. So he looked like a pirate to her, eh? Manuel would have scoffed any other time for now he merely shook his head, the hat moving with his head briefly.

"Ruggedly handsome, am I?" he teased, "I don't think I'd make a fine pirate."

No, there was no need to shed light on that aspect of his past. It would only complicate things if he did.
