"And you're close enough to lose
Close to the point, to where you know that your mind,
it cannot choose..."The abyss of space was illuminated by the violent rust like glow that irradiate from the Omega Four Relay. The endless void of stars and far off galaxies shrouded the Normandy, motionless against the deep blues and purples, protecting it briefly from the horror that lay within. Once this last night cycle passes, the ragtag team would be following Shepard into the rusted inferno like lambs to the slaughter.
That was to be expected right? Slaughter? The Omega Four Relay was a dead zone, filled with the skeletal corpses of ships and their long forgotten crews. What would make them any different?
Beryl watched her reflection gaze back at herself before sighing. She didn't have an answer either. Thoughts of the unknown danced through her mind, whether they'd survive, if they could even make it through that graveyard of forsaken ships and debris first. A darker thought echoed painfully in the back of her mind, rather who would survive.
It was inevitable that some wouldn't last as long as others. Beryl felt her lips tug in a slight frown, she'd grown quite accustomed to the various crew-mates that lingered and lurked where they felt the most comfortable on the ship. They were hard to ignore, really. Each individual person was just so fascinating. Especially Thane.
A childlike smile quickly flashed in the shimmering reflections gaze, one that even illuminated the eyes, but it was gone before Beryl could fully focus on it. Lately, the times have been so volatile that even she couldn't keep up with it. Everything just seemed to happen so fast, and crashed down even faster.
A shudder, poor word choice. Or maybe it was the ships temperature? They always seemed to turn it down in the observation bay, especially during the night cycles. Maybe Samara liked it cooler, who knows. Beryl narrowed her eyes slightly, if they could adjust the temperature when ever they pleased why did they stick Thane in that little room away from everyone else? It just didn't seem fair to her...
"Trouble sleeping?"
Beryl jumped slightly before looking up at her reflection with a concerned frown. Brown eyes scanned the observation bays reflection for the source of the voice out of habit. It was rare that anyone could get a jump on her, even if she was this deep in thought, but the tone of voice was dead giveaway.
A presence to her right caused her smile, sure enough, a figure stood partially hidden in the fleeting light of the large glass pane. Most would feel startled, Beryl felt herself relax immediately. Only one other person on this entire ship could sneak up that successfully on her.
"What gave it away, Thane?" Beryl turned slightly to face him, parts of her face illuminated by the void of space while the rest was shrouded by her hood.
He sauntered closer, face coming into view with the aid of the cosmic hues from outside and he simply chuckled. Beryl tilted her head, usually when she does this its childlike and almost whimsical, but not now. She was concerned, something seemed...empty in Thane's chuckle.
Thane stood besides Beryl and gazed out at the rusted relic of the Omega Four Relay. Beryl watched him, picking out little details from his face that flickered the longer he watched the harsh red glow.
"Thane?" She questioned, brows echoing the concern in her tone.
He only looked down, not facing her, rather facing the reflection of the two. Maybe it was the lights from the stars but it looked like...like he was crying.
Beryl felt her heart sink instantly, she'd never pictured someone as strong as Thane to be crying. She immediately reached over and lightly grasped his shoulder. Hoping to pull him out of whatever it was that was causing these tears.
"I'm not at peace, siha." Thane admitted, voice hoarser then normal with forlorn tones choking his speech.
Not at peace? Beryl's mind raced, he had said the same to Shepard when discussing his strained relationship with Kolyat. But, that had been resolved, she had seen to it that Thane found Kolyat...he had seemed fine after that.
"Beryl," Thane turned to face her fully, his face was wet with tears and Beryl even felt like crying, he placed both hands on her shoulders, "I'm afraid to die."
His tone was filled with shame and it tore into Beryl like no pain ever had. It hit her right in her heart because at this moment she realized that she, too, was afraid to die.
Neither could ignore the thoughts that ate at the back of their minds, the rusted flame burnt a hole into the two from outside, the inevitable was coming fast approaching. The end was nigh.
Maybe it was an impulse, maybe it was because this very well could be the last time she'd ever see him again. Or the last time he'd ever see her... But, she kissed him. And it wasn't just a little peck that they'd share before a side mission that the other didn't join, it was passionate and spoke louder then anything they could of said to one another.
Once they broke apart, Thane held Beryl close as she rested her head on his shoulder. They both watched the glow snicker at them as they waited. The mission they'd been hand picked for was getting closer and closer...but then again so were they.
"Thane," Beryl's tone was strong despite the growing dread that filled her.
He looked down at her, pushing stray hairs from in front of her face, "Yes, siha?
"Be alive with me tonight."
"Close enough to lose.
Close enough
to lose your heart."
