Charlie finally quieted a little, sitting down. She found herself a little glad, letting her hand fall back to her side. Honestly, if it kept on, she wasn't sure how she might react.

She ran a hand through her short hair, it already feeling a little greasy. They didn't have much ways in terms of a bath and she wasn't pron to swimming out in open water. Regardless, she hoped to get a bath soon.

She waved off his words rather easily, instead turning her attention on finding something to draw with again. She handled his things with care. Stolen or not, they did belong to him now and she didn't want to break anything.

Charlie seemed to have other things in mind however when he put his feet up. A statue nearly tottered over and she moved to dart for it. When it didn't fall over, she relaxed.

She glanced away after, starting her search again. Honestly, the way things were looking she doubted she would be able to find anything. Charlie had some very pretty things but none of them seemed to lean toward art. Most of them looked quite rare in fact but were dirty. She couldn't begin to fathom why he'd taken them if he didn't want to take care of them. Perhaps it was a pirate thing or merely for show. If anything, that latter might have been the case.

In time, her face cooled a little but her stomach was still twisted in nervous knots. If the necklace had said anything else, she wouldn't have cared. She dug herself into a might fine hole now. She could only wait to see the results.

----[x]----

Ah Tabai nodded when she replied. It seemed she had little way to help in a medical sense though he didn't mind that fact. He couldn't blame her for the lack of knowledge. He might find her strengths later o, when things were so desperate.

He raised a hand as if brush any nervousness off easily. There were other things to be done, after all, repairs and the like. She could help there.

"Come, we will find something else that can be done," he replied, motioning toward her. "There will be repairs that will need to be done."

He started leading her about Tulum. While the area wasn't heavily damaged, though there were places that would need to be patched up. It would be best to take care of these things while they still had day light to burn.

It didn't take him long to find a few taking care of repairs. Ah Tabai motioned to Karissa, sparing a small smile. She seemed anxious to do something, rifle still in hand.

"Here we are," he started, motioning toward the area. "It is best we get started as soon as possible."

Ah Tabai planned on lingering unless he something drastic needed attended to. He did a little bit of everything to keep this place well. This was no exception. He would do whatever he was able to take care of Tulum in it's current state.

Already, others were instructing Karissa where she would be needed best. Ah Tabai spared a nod, moving to get started as well. Thankfully, the pirates hadn't done as much damage as they could have.

Charlie didn't know how long they stayed like that. Only once did he get back up, brushing crumbs off of his clothes as he sought out an oil lamp. It had been dark when they'd first got here but as the evening wore on and passed it was much too dark to see by. Charlie didn't quite fancy the idea of going to sleep this early either.

The idea to root through Mia's clothes was still at the back of his mind though he didn't act upon it for now. Mia would probably hang off of him or try to rip out whatever she had hidden in them from his hands. He'd rather not have that much of a fuss to deal with.

It was quiet as they sat there though neither seemed to mind. If nothing else Mia was able to calm down and keep rooting through his things. There wasn't much he personally valued above all else and so he saw little need to have her stop. It kept Mia occupied and occasionally she seemed fascinated by the odd thing here or there. If it kept her happy who was he to stop her? Less complaints to hear about later anyways.

At some point he'd taken to bobbing his leg up and down to pass the time. He'd be lying if he said he wouldn't rather be out around Havana, preferably the pub. He couldn't just leave Mia here and he doubted she'd stop fidgeting in a pub. It was troublesome, that was for sure.

----[x]----
She'd started fidgeting with her necklace nervously. If she couldn't help bandage people up then what was left? It must have been all over her face and demeanor that she felt his way for Ah Tabai had held up a hand as if to put a stop to that feeling entirely. Karissa let a small smile spread over her lips briefly in silent thanks.

It was only a moment after that Ah Tabai was gesturing for her to follow mentioning repairs along the way. She glanced around what was nearby as they walked. Tulum didn't have much in the way of fancy homes or monuments but it was still home to everyone here. These huts didn't look like they'd been touched but then the pirates had been able to get this far inland before they'd been driven back.

"Repairs I can do," she confirmed, trailing along after him, "just point me in the right direction."

The further back towards the shore they went the more damage was visible. A frown tugged at the corners of her lips, had the pirates followed the ship she was on here? If that was the case it was a worrying thought. Karissa was hesitant to bring the thought out loud though.

Only when she'd come across a group that needed an extra pair of hands did Karissa put the rifle down. She laid it carefully on the ground so that it would not fall and go off or anything. She just hoped that in the last dregs of daylight no one would trip over it. Everyone looked careful enough around here that she felt it shouldn't happen.

For the most part Karissa followed instructions, unsure of how building materials were used in this time. Sure, she'd helped her father with small construction sites but that had been with brick and concrete and the like, Tulum had none of that at their disposal. It was definitely a learning experience, seeing and helping with the rebuilding however minor some patches were.

For a long while it was quiet but Mia didn't mind. She'd taken to poking through his things, so lost in her own thoughts that she barely noticed him get up and move at any point. This was somewhat normal, having often lost herself in her own head when she was working.

At some point, she glanced at him, watching as he bobbed his leg. He looked bored and perhaps he was. Up until she and Karissa had appeared, he might have had other things to do. He was growing restless after these couple of weeks but never mentioned it.

"What would you be doing now if I wasn't here?" she inquired, studying some little trinket. She tended to that layered over top the little thing before she carried on, "you look like one who would frequent a bar so you should do that. I don't mind, not like I haven't been in one before."

She and Karissa had gone when they could though Mia never drank. She wasn't so much for that aspect as she was just the general atmosphere. Whether Charlie believed this or not would remain to be seen, however.

Mia lifted her head, glancing at him. He'd shot her a look and Mia snorted slightly in amusement. "I'm not a saint, you know," she teased afterward, "sometimes Karissa felt like she needed a drink, so we'd go to a bar on occasion."

It wasn't like she felt right about him giving up his normal routine just because he had to watch her. Mia had no intention of darting off or leaving, the biggest 'threat' being the assassin's to him.

----[x]----

Repairs came along slowly, Ah Tabai noted, as he tended to other things. It was unavoidable the lack of sunlight didn't help. During the day tomorrow, the people here would feel a little less restless and willing to pull together. Some were worried about loved ones being hurt as well.

Karissa aided in what she could even if she still appeared a little awkward. If anything, the extra hands helped, whether she was aware of that much or not.

The evening wore on and torches were lit to help chase away the dark. Daniel had been around to see Karissa once or twice, aiding in what repairs they could manage in the darkness. When it was deemed too dark to carry on, they called it a night.

Ah Tabai moved forward, catching a glance of Karissa wiping at her forehead. She looked a little warm, the humidity no doubt getting to her.

"Are you hungry, mi'lady?" he inquired, motioning toward her, "With all that has happened, I do not believe you have had a chance to eat."

They had been interrupted a fair few times. If she wasn't hungry than a little water could do her good. He'd rather not see her collapse of heat exhaustion or anything of the like.

"You look a little tired," he pressed, a lightness in her tone, "I apologize, I did not mean to put you through that much work."

Charlie wasn't sure how long they sat like that. Mia kept fiddling around with his collection of things though she didn't seem to linger too long on any one thing. He didn't so much mind this as he minded the fact that he had nothing to do now. He could just bother Mia some more but enough was enough for one day and even a guy like him was aware when that time came.

Eventually she'd turned around and spoke to him again. He raised an eyebrow wondering what a girl like her had to do at a pub of any sort. Maybe they were different where she was from though Charlie found it hard to imagine a place to drink at that wasn't rough 'round the edges.

"That right, poppet?" he wondered aloud, "whatever you need to tell yourself! Still, I'd rather not get my ear chewed off 'cause I took you someplace unsavory-like."

Really, even if he thought he'd be able to keep her out of trouble with the other drunks Charlie knew someone'd hear word about it and lecture him for it. He'd rather avoid the hassle and the time that would be wasted on that. In the end of things Mia wasn't cut out for that place no matter what she said. Got rather rough there, 'specially when Charlie was workin' up a fight of his own every now and again.

"Don't go givin' me that look now!" Charlie scoffed, noting the way Mia had taken to eyeing him. He shook his head, waving her off. "Much as I hate to admit I got people I answer to 'round these parts."

He rolled his shoulders then to work the muscles a little loose. He'd been sitting in one place for so long that he was beginning to cramp up a little in places. Maybe he should get up and pace around a bit.

----[x]----
It hadn't been a long endeavor considering the time it was when things had calmed. Night had quickly fallen and even with the help of torches it wasn't enough light to see by for building repairs. Karissa was shooed away though she wasn't too offended well aware that anything they'd try to do now could end up being harmful.

She puffed out a sigh, swiping at her forehead. It wasn't too hard to ignore the sheen of sweat when night had fallen and she found she rather liked how warm it was. She'd always preferred it to the cold and now she'd found herself in an area that was always hot. She couldn't have gotten a better situation with the weather if she'd tried.

Ah Tabai's voice reached her ears, drawing her attention to him. Her hand still hovered near her forehead for a second before she lowered it, turning more fully to him as he neared. At the mention of food Karissa became all too aware of just how empty her belly really was. To be truthful she'd forgotten about food almost entirely since those pirates had attacked and for good reason.

"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't," she said after a moment had passed.

Blinking she was taken aback by the his next words. It wasn't like she could just sit around and not do anything, that just didn't seem right. Even if it hadn't been in the plans to have her help around so soon Karissa still felt as if she'd belonged for that time when she had been.

"It's fine, rather be put to work than sitting around on my hands all night," Karissa assured, holding her hands up as if to shield herself from any rebuttals he'd have to this.

Mia swiped at her nose, sniffling again. Honestly, maybe it wasn't the sudden change in weather that brought about the sniffles. All of the dust in the air could have caused it and then some. She didn't mention it. Clearly Charlie had little intention to clean and she wasn't about to do it herself, afraid that reorganizing the place would cause a loss of something important.

She pushed herself to her feet, trying to ignore any pain that shot through her knee. It was stiff and protested when she moved. A bit of walking with quickly fix that.

She waved his words off easily, used to it at this point. Honestly, she knew nothing of how bars worked here so maybe it was for the best. Nearly everyone seemed to brandish a weapon and Charlie seemed the type who'd pick a fight if he was in the mood.

"Something tells me you'd be out looking for trouble anyways," she commented, starting to pace a little bit to work her knee. She could see him shrug out of the corner of her eye, unsurprised by the motioning.

Mia eventually stopped pacing, shooting him a quick look. It wasn't long after did he protest, a scoff escaping him. She resisted a roll of her eyes. She was growing used to what he said or at least the brushing off bit. The teasing could be hard to handle sometimes.

She strode closer to him, reaching out and quickly taking his hat from his head. The leather was a little bit of a foreign feel to her, most of it 'fake' in her time. It was obviously worn well and had some damage though not so much so to warrant getting rid of.

"I suppose that's not surprising," she replied, placing the hat atop her own head now, "you're quite the pretty blond, you know?"

She grinned widely though she did mean it. His hair fit his face and why he hid it under a hat, she could only assume. It really wasn't a question she'd ask knowing it might have just been the style of the time.

----[x]----

Karissa looked as if she'd done quite a bit of work throughout the evening. She didn't seem too bothered by the heat regardless of this. In fact, she seemed quite content. Wherever she was from, she must have preferred warm air over the cold.

She took a moments to think it through, it seemed. For all he was aware, she was tired and would have wanted to sleep. Instead, she took up the offer appearing a little relieved by it.

They started off, Ah Tabai listening to conversations around them. There was little worry over another threat or at least those from pirates. If they did return, they'd be prepared for it. Extra guards were already positioned here and there, keeping an eye on things throughout the evening.

His gaze fell back on Karissa when she finally spoke. Offering a small smile, he spared a nod, "That is good to hear," he answered, motioning toward her, "many appreciate it. The extra hands were a great help."

Ah Tabai fell silent for a moment as he led them on. They hadn't exactly finished their conversation earlier as it was. While a decision had been made, he still had a great deal of questions.

"I do not suppose you would mind it if we continued our conversation from earlier?" he inquired before he placed his hands behind his back, "we were rather rudely interrupted."

He wouldn't push if she felt she was giving too much, he would drop the subject for a short time. Pushing her wasn't going to get him any results. If anything, what she had said, while shocking, was relatively interesting and he wished to know more. If she wished to enlighten him a little more, she would.

"Please do tell me if I am pushing too much, mi'lady," he informed, "it is not my wish to add any unwanted stress." She had enough as it was, with the worries of her friends safety, and he would rather avoid being a factor in adding anymore.

Charlie could hear Mia sniffling every now and again though he wasn't sure why; maybe it was all the dust around. If that was the case then she could do something about it, Charlie wasn't out to protect her from ridiculous things like dust after all. That she could handle herself, he was sure, and even if he did there wasn't much fun in it for him.

When she tried to get him to go out to the local tavern and let her tag along Charlie quickly shot her down. She looked thoughtful for a moment—after she'd shot him a look, naturally—before deciding with him on not going. He scoffed and waved her off yet again, of course he would've found some trouble.

"You say it as if it's a bad thing," he answered lightly.

Pacing was what she took to next though he had no idea why she did this. His place was cluttered, small as it was, and there wasn't a lot of room to pace around in the first place. Nonetheless she was doing just that, her steps quick much like that of a caged beast.

Without warning she'd stopped, eyeing him. Charlie raised an eyebrow, waiting for her to say something. It didn't take her long before she'd reached out to snatch his hate from his head, his hair falling into his face. Annoyed he pushed it back just in time to see her drop his favorite hat on her head. She looked entirely too pleased that she'd done this, throwing a compliment his way soon after.

"You're tellin' me things the world over knows, poppet," Charlie shot back. She was out of his reach and he wasn't about to get up and chase her around the place just to get his hat back. Instead he held out an expectant hand. "Now, my hat."

----[x]----
As they walked Karissa's eyes kept straying around them until Ah Tabai would say something and her attention turned back to him. If she wasn't so new to this place it would not be the case though she had a feeling Ah Tabai might guess that was the case. Whether or not he'd actually grasped the scope of how utterly new everything was to her, not just the sights, had yet to be seen.

"Glad to hear it," she said, smiling in return. She hadn't felt like she'd made too much of a difference but then she'd just been running around and doing what she was told compared to others who didn't need much direction.

They passed those who had also begun to settle down for the night, resting and passing around food and drink. Others still were cleaning up smaller messes presumably so no one would trip over them in the night. The torches that had been lit were already set around what must have been usual areas, shadows flickering and morphing in time with the flames. These shadows were eerie to Karissa though she said nothing of it, in time she might grow used to that sight.

Ah Tabai spoke once more, drawing her attention away from the dancing shadows. Still, Karissa had trouble tearing her gaze from them, a little mesmerized by the way they moved despite the creepy feeling it gave her. When she did manage this she blinked up at him for a long moment before it sank in what he'd asked her.

"Oh! No, that's fine," Karissa finally answered, "better now than later."

At the very least that's how she thought of the situation. If she kept it all to herself it might end up turning people against her later, at least those that mattered might. She'd rather not be turned away because of something she could have prevented. There were allies here, Karissa would rather keep it that way.

Mia had halted in her pacing, instead toying with the charm that hung from his hat. It was a strange little thing, dangling there. When she actually payed attention to him over the weeks, she had watched the charm sway as he walked or moved.

She hummed lightly in response, "well, for you maybe it isn't," she jested, "I'm about as violent as a butterfly."

It was true and Mia had a feeling he was already well aware of that. After all, she was willing to give up the Eden Piece to avoid a violent conflict and never tried to fight or escape from him in the passed weeks.

She glanced at him, tipping her head slightly. Annoyance had crossed his features, a rare sight since she'd come to know a cheeky grin or smirk on his lips. He was a confident one however and quickly shot a reply back, holding his hand out for his hat.

Mia moved forward, knelling down in front of him. She took the hat off her head and place it in his hand. If anything, he looked a little pleased that she relented but she wasn't sure what he might do next.

"Well, you certainly know how to take a compliment," she answered, her hands dropping to her knees. She rocked back on her heels, balancing her weight out a little better and putting less pressure on her knee. "What do we do, then?"

If there was something to do, he'd know more about it. Charlie had a pitiful amount of books that she'd gone through already. Unable to locate any art supplies in the dark, she had little to do but she didn't just want to head to bed either. A lot of her nights were ending up like this and she wasn't quite so pleased to be alone.

----[x]----

Her gaze continued to drift about, taking in everything that she could see. Even in the dark, she seemed fascinated by this place. Only when he spoke did she turn her attention back to him.

A smile had tugged at her lips, fitting her face a little better than the worried expression that had been there earlier. He couldn't blame her for feeling anything so negative. Anyone would be worried or downright terrified. If anything, Karissa was handling it all well.

She didn't seem to mind the work that had passed and would no doubt come the next day. If that was the case, Ah Tabai wouldn't prevent her from helping. Already, she had enough on her shoulders so perhaps she was looking for a distraction.

Eventually she answered his question, seeming to find it difficult to tear her gaze away the activities and people milling about. She still needed to get a feel for this place and he could only assume what her home was like, what made it different?

"I am glad to hear it," he answered, nodding his head, "I am merely curious as to what I should expect in this...story."

Ah Tabai found it difficult to call of this a 'story' of sorts but regardless, he had know of anything that might aid them. If there was some way to turn things in their favor or prevent something, he would take it.

"No doubt, it will take time," he pressed, watching her expression. It was thoughtful once more, perhaps hesitant, "if you are not afraid of sharing it."

He paused nearer a fire, villagers passing out food. It was mostly a simple meal of dried meat and bread or fruits that had been gathered. If the pirates hadn't attack, things would have been running a little bit smoother. They would recover with time, he knew. The blows never lasted that long, Ah Tabai had found over the years.

Why she was so fascinated by his hat he couldn't say. It was still annoying to have it tugged from his head like that without warning. Typically he didn't like people touching his stuff anyways but it wasn't like he had much choice with Mia in his house. It was one thing, however, to have her inspecting the things about the house and another to have her just take things off of his person like that, however teasing it was. Charlie could be a possessive man about things, after all...

"All the more reason not to drag you about there, poppet," he reasoned.

It was quiet for some time after that. Any noises from the city outside didn't reach inside but then it wasn't like anything exciting was happening all over Havana either. If he was lucky he might have a skirmish with a drunken sailor or find an assassin to tussle with but until then things would be quiet for Charlie, he was sure. He was on a job to keep Mia safe and out of assassin hands, after all.

Eventually she wandered back to him, placing his hat back on his head instead of his in hand. He waited a moment before he reached up to situation it back into place properly. It was a little big on him but he wasn't about to give it up because of that little fact.

"We sit," Charlie told her, "not much doing about Havana at night that goes without any trouble brewing."

Guards were always on their edge at night and any little thing could set someone off if they were touchy. Charlie wasn't quite up for getting Mia into a scrap because of that. Perhaps if she'd ever learned a bit of defense and he could be positive that she'd hold her own until things cleared out if trouble brewed.

He waved a dismissive hand at Mia's expression. She didn't quite seem to like the idea of sitting around like thisif that sour look was anything to go by. "I'm sure there's something in all this stuff to keep your mind off things for awhile."

He couldn't be sure what all he had in the house anymore. A lot of what he picked up he forgot about in some corner or drawer. When he managed to get a ship he'd move a lot of it into the captain's quarters. No need to leave valuables back in one place where anyone could break in and steal them, after all.

----[x]----
Ah Tabai didn't seem to mind her wandering attention span for the time being. In time Karissa was sure she'd grow used to all this but for the time being she wanted to take it all in as soon as she could. He was a patient man, that was for sure, or maybe he just felt indulgent considering the situation. If that was the case she was a little thankful for that.

She hummed in response when he mentioned he wasn't sure what to expect from the things she'd be telling him soon enough. It wasn't like there was anything she could say to prepare him for any of it either. Was he aware of that? Karissa couldn't say she knew.

"Lots of things, I guess," she finally said, "there's not a lot I can say or do to soften any kind of shock value though."

These things were said with a simple, very matter-of-fact tone of voice. There was no reason to sugarcoat things when she was already committing to helping the Brotherhood out as best she could anyways. If there was any sort of butterfly effect with what she'd share there was little she could do to stop it. Just being here could very well be enough to send things spiraling into something new.

Karissa blinked, glancing back up at Ah Tabai when he spoke up again. He seemed to be aware of how difficult a 'story' it would be to tell; had he guessed what she hadn't been able to say before those pirates had arrived? It seemed unlikely but Karissa couldn't be sure. It wasn't like Ah Tabai had shared many of his thoughts on the matter, maybe he was waiting until she'd told him everything she could.

"It's not so much being scared so much as it is being nervous about believability," she defended lightly before she'd turned away to study those around the fire he'd stopped them near. Simple foods were being passed around to everyone and from the looks of it this might have been at least a semi-normal occurrence. Maybe everyone here liked to remain close due to their way of life and the fact that any of them could be sent off and not return.

Her attention was turned more fully to food when someone handed off a share to her. It wasn't much, some fruit, a bit of bread and dried meat but it would keep her stomach from growling so loudly for the time being. With that she'd be able to focus a little more fully on the matters at hand anyways.

Charlie seemed annoyed with her taking his hat. She didn't like that look on his face, much preferred the easy going expression that was normally settled on his features. She felt better when she placed it back on his head.

"Well, at least you're looking out for me," she replied, letting her hands lay onto her knees. Whatever pain lingered in her right one, she ignored for the time being.

She was quiet for a long moment, merely listening to the sounds outside. There was a hustle and bustle about this place that she wasn't used to. Even after the weeks that had passed, she still hadn't gotten used to the noise.

Mia pushed herself up just long enough to sit on the couch beside him. It wasn't a large thing though she found a lot of furniture in this time was. It wasn't as if she minded, getting comfortable where she was.

Sitting didn't seem very productive but what could she do? It wasn't like there was a lot that she could do, not like back home where she would have been comfortable. Late nights were normal for her, at least when she didn't have to work.

"Okay," she replied after a long moment. She nodded toward him next before she continued, "let me draw you."

If she could dig something up, that would give her something to do. Charlie was a handsome young man, when she let herself admit it. If he caught onto that, well, she'd probably hear about it in time.

----[x]----

Karissa took a long moment to speak up, answer his questions. He was patient and allowed her to think things through. If there were a lot of details to go over, then he would wait as long as he had to.

When an answer did come, he hummed in response. Ah Tabai nodded in understanding and silently agreed. There would be no softening the shock value but nonetheless, it was an advantage. If it was something they could use, then they would.

"I suppose that is true," he replied carefully. "At least you take precautions. Some might not have admitted that much, mi'lady."

Ah Tabai stood close by, watching her for a brief moment. She tended to whatever meal to fill her stomach. With all of the ruckus, it would probably be a bit of normalcy for her.

He lifted his head a little more when she spoke up again. Listening quietly, he mulled over the words carefully. No doubt, she worried about what he might have thought and what others might think. If someone learned that all of this was a simple 'story', well, he wasn't sure what they would think.

"I understand," he assured with a nod. "It will remain between myself and you, if that is any reassurance."

That was the least Ah Tabai could offer. If he was asked about how he got the information he did, he could create some kind of answer to push away any others trying to dig deeper. It was the least he could provide.

Charlie scoffed lightly at her words. Was it just him or did she sound like she hadn't expected him to take care of her? He shook his head, remaining silent on the matter. It was no big deal considering he knew better. He had his orders and he intended to keep them, failure wasn't an option.

For a long moment they sat in silence like that. Or rather, he sat while Mia remained on her feet. Charlie couldn't imagine what was going on through her mind, she'd still expressed very little about her friend or worries of her. For all he knew she might be hiding what her friend could potentially be planning now that she was whisked out of Havana.

He shook those thoughts away. Charlie was absolutely sure that if he pushed for answers like that he'd only drive Mia away, that would be harmful to the Templar cause. They had one of them and for the moment Mia was cooperating, Charlie would rather not be the cause for that to change.

Eventually Mia plopped down on the seat next to him, looking as if she had some sort of a great idea in mind. Instead she asked to draw him, sounding as if this was the most natural course of action for the night. Eyebrow raised, Charlie studied her for a moment before he shrugged.

"Well, if you feel you must, poppet," he said, gesturing towards the room, "there's some things to use I'm sure... somewhere."

The last time he'd used paper had been a few weeks ago and he always seemed to be moving it around. He wasn't even sure where he'd left any drawing supplies. At the look he was shot Charlie merely grinned at her.

----[x]----
More and more Karissa was finding that she wasn't sure of what Ah Tabai might say to the things she did or had to tell him. Still, she'd already promised help and she couldn't just back out now, she'd feel guilty about it later if she did. She'd liked the assassins long before this, she wanted to do something to aid them, even if it was just information that might end up changing everything later. Karissa could only hope that the changes would be for the better.

"I think most people would have just thought they were dreaming or something," Karissa answered. Truthfully, if it hadn't been for Mia being with her and the fact that she was feeling everything she might have even entertained the idea for way longer than she actually had. Even now that idea was still more sensible then what really happened.

Silence settled over them in the following few minutes. If it wasn't for the hushed conversations around them and the sounds of the nocturnal animals and insects it would have been a little awkward. As it was there was plenty for Karissa to listen to as she ate the meager meal she'd been given.

When she finally did speak back up, voicing one of her concerns on the matter Ah Tabai looked to be mulling that over for a moment or two. Karissa could only wait, wondering what was on his mind. In that time she finished off her meal, brushing her hands off on her pants. By that time he'd finally spoken up, offering a solution on the matter. It was definitely better then everyone knowing about it and her odd situation. Besides, if he needed a bit of proof later she had kept her wallet and everything in it, tucked away at the pouch on her belt.

"Probably might be best," she answered, "I'm already a target because of what happened in Havana anyways."

Around them people were still tending to themselves and their meals. Conversations were all over the place and so Ah Tabai's and hers was lost in the mix. It didn't seem like any of the other assassins were listening in anyways.

Mia didn't try to guess what was on his mind in those few short minutes. It could have been many things but his lack of speaking made her wonder if it had something to do with her. She didn't know and she wasn't about to push the subject.

She was still unsure of how to go about explain everything as well. While she had claimed she was from another time entirely, that had been a small lie. Essentially telling him that she and Karissa were pulled into a story just didn't seem wise.

At least he hadn't asked about her in a while. Mia worried when he would and why she wasn't expressing worry about Karissa. She couldn't just up and tell him that she knew Karissa would be safe, however.

Those thoughts were pushed aside when Charlie spoke again. She shifted before got to her feet again. His house really was a disorganized mess but really she'd been no better with her room back home.

Several minutes of rummaging her and there produced some parchment and fountain pen. She nearly knocked a few things over trying to find these things and took relief finding that the pen at least worked before she sat back down.

"Do you just throw whatever it is you have places and then forget about them?" she asked, only sparing the briefest of glances as she started to draw. She didn't care for the pen but it was better than nothing. "Because that totally seems to be the case here."

It wasn't as if she hadn't done the same before though, she normally took to the opposite. At least when she didn't clean, she could find everything she was looking for.

----[x]----

Ah Tabai couldn't say what was on her mind but it was no doubt quite a lot. Throughout the day, she was joyful to quiet and thoughtful. He couldn't find reason to blame her, there was a lot at stake here.

Her words were simple ones. Ah Tabai nodded in agreement. It was a reasonable assumption to make. Whatever drew her to the conclusion that she was not dreaming, he didn't ask. Maybe it was simple feelings or maybe it was her friend.

He had to wonder about that friend of hers as well. If taken by the Templars, would she part with any knowledge or sway to their side? It happened in the past, people who had favored the assassins abandoning their cause for what they believed to be better with the Templars.

A moment of hesitance passed before he shook his head. "If you do not mind me asking, mi'lady," he started carefully. He studied her expression. She was waiting on him to speak but he wanted to go about this carefully. "Do you believe your friend might sway to the Templars if persuaded?"

He could only wait for an answer to that question. Karissa was mulling it over and he worried he might have pushed a little too far. It was hard to say however. Karissa would know best and he at least wanted her to be prepared for possible outcomes.

"It seems you caused quite a ruckus there, from what I was told," he agreed carefully. "But I have heard off and seen worse. Your being reckless was a lack of choice in that situation. At least you made it out without injury, that much is to be thankful for."

Anyone would understand that much. She was not as well trained as the assassins and running as they did had been their best bet. It drew a lot of attention but at least one of the two was safe with them now.

Mia had already stood up by the time she spoke, glancing around at the cluttered mess that made up Charlie's home. He shrugged and gestured around the room. The way the place looked spoke testaments to how cleanly Charlie was with his belongings. Dust covered a lot of things and he hardly spared the time to actively clean anyways.

"Mostly," he agreed, "see no point in being all organized. Only gets messy later."

Charlie imagined that'd be especially true out on the sea. Surely a bad enough storm rocking a ship side to side would jostle more than a few things about in the captain's cabins. Why try to be organized when that would do no good later on in his life? Charlie didn't see the point in wasting that sort of time.

"Don't tell me that you're the overly cleanly type, poppet," he groaned suddenly. It would make sense with all this mention of how he kept his house.

Heaving a sigh he took to rubbing the back of his neck. By this time Mia had found a few things to suit her needs and was making her way back to sit down. From the way she shot him a look she didn't seem to appreciate his complaining about her possibly behavior. Charlie waved it off, unconcerned by this for the most part.

A moment passed in which he settled into his seat a little more comfortably, propping his feet up onto the nearest table. He still had his boots on despite having no plans to leave for the night, sooner or later he'd kick them off. For the moment he was content even as Mia started her little project.

----[x]----
While others left them be it gave them time to chat about less compromising things though it was very clear that Ah Tabai was curious about the story she had to tell. Even now Karissa worried about him believing her, she didn't want him to think that she was making things up or touched in the head. With any luck he might be able to at least take it with a grain of salt.

She'd finished off the piece of fruit she'd been given before Ah Tabai spoke up again. Perhaps he'd taken the time to mull things over himself while those around them ate and tended to wounds. It was far too late now to do any repairs anyways and surely some of the more serious wounds needed a second looking at anyways.

When he spoke up Karissa blinked up at him, taking a moment to register what she'd been asked this time. Frowning it took a moment to actually answer. While she knew Mia had only been looking out for them it was a little shameful to Karissa to have to admit what had happened. But then it wasn't like Mia was a fighter either, preferring the path of least resistance. Karissa had to keep reminding herself about that fact.

"Don't think badly of her but," she paused then, folding her arms over her chest. It was still hard to fess up to even if Karissa hadn't been the one to do it. "she did try to fork over the Piece of Eden originally..."

Ah Tabai seemed to brood over that, looking troubled about it. In truth it worried Karissa as well though she tried not to let that show, there was a lot on her mind however and even with the excitement of meeting Ah Tabai and seeing Tulum it weighed in on her. It was a little embarrassing when he spoke next, drawing her out of her thoughts, however. She hadn't thought she caused that big of a mess but maybe she had.

"I'd like to think I'd have been subtler if I'd had the chance," she defended.

Mia raised a brow, shooting him a look at his short taunt. She shook her head, her focus turning her attention back to the paper. He was looking for ways to tease her, or at least that's what she assumed.

"Not really, no," she replied. The scratching of the pen filled the silence briefly. "My ma liked a clean house but my room was always a mess."

Work tended to leave her pushing cleaning aside. On her days off, she indulged in other activities. It drove her mom nuts at times but if anything, Mia at least helped out around the house.

"I won't be cleaning your house, if that's what you think," she joked. "I wouldn't even know where to start in the first place."

She saw him shift slightly, getting in a comfortably position. Until either of them got tired, there wasn't much of a need to head to their rooms for the night. She would try to keep herself preoccupied until than and after, given her lack of sleep most days.

"So what might be the plan tomorrow?" she asked if only to keep conversation going. "Or are you more of the 'spur of the moment' kind of guy?"

Mia could only assume most things with him. For all she knew, he'd be bombarding her with questions he hoped to get answers to again. Mia was still apprehensive about telling him things, unsure of where to start. It was difficult and she could only provide so much, she felt.

----[x]----

It was quiet for several long minutes. The crack of fires and voices occasionally broke that silence when he focused on it. They were familiar sounds to him. Now that everything had calmed down, some were moving to turn in for the night while others were staying up later.

Karissa seemed to be mulling over his question carefully. A particular look crossed her expression. Ah Tabai already had an idea of what the answer might be and it didn't look like it would be a good one.

When she did speak, her first words confirmed his thoughts. It was only when she actually confessed what her friend had attempted did he understand.

"I see..." he muttered in response. "I will give her the benefit of the doubt."

For all he knew, she was only trying to help. Ah Tabai could only assume, not knowing the woman like Karissa did. Still, she didn't look proud to admit what her friend had nearly done either.

"I just want you to be prepared," he carried on after a moment. "The Templars have a way with persuading others. I can not say I know your friend, so perhaps you will extend faith for her."

Until he got word about the other woman, they could only assume. Still, he had to think about what might happen as well. Ah Tabai would rather not see the two being on opposite sides, as enemies, in the end.

A short chuckle left him a moment after however. She shuffled nervously after his statement. In the heat of the moment, she probably missed what had happened in Havana.

"From what I have heard, it was quite the event," he replied good naturedly. "Things could have been worse, however, if other Templars had been in the area."

Despite her answer Charlie wasn't so sure about it. The way she'd picked at his things and eyed the dustier items made him doubt her claim. All the same he kept his mouth shut for the time being. There really wasn't much point in trying to push her buttons when he wanted to just kick back and relax in lieu of being able to go out to the nearest tavern.

When she spoke up about not cleaning his house no matter what he thought he offered a shrug. "Weren't tellin' you too, luv," he said simply.

Mia found her way back, picking past all the clutter to her seat. By that time Charlie had made himself as comfortable as he could manage without outright moving to another location. If doodlin' was what kept her busy and content then Charlie had no qualms with letting her draw him of all things. If nothing else it was a little flattering.

Several minutes passed before Mia spoke up again. He glanced at her, eyebrow raised; she hadn't been asking about many plans as of the time she'd been under his watch. Was she wary of what they might ask of her? Charlie had noticed that whenever it came to topics of herself, her friend or where they came from she'd tried to shy away from the topics.

"Depends on what Havana has to offer tomorrow," he said simply, looking as if this was the most obvious answer, "or if the grand master sent anyone to talk to you yet or not."

From the corner of his eye he could swear Mia had tensed though he hadn't paid so much attention that he could be absolutely sure about it. Charlie shrugged it off, sooner or later she'd tell them what they needed to know.

----[x]----
While Ah Tabai at least wouldn't judge Mia for her decision on the matter with the Piece of Eden it still didn't sit right with Karissa. She didn't want to hear that Mia had gotten hurt but just giving in to what the Templars wanted didn't sit right with her either. It left her conflicted on the entire matter and she found she hated thinking about it too much because of that.

His warning was one Karissa was already familiar with though it only settled into place in the pit of her stomach. She had no doubt that Mia would do what she could to keep herself safe but at the same time that would mean giving the Templars a leg up on the assassins. She didn't want to see that happen if she could help it.

"I know," she admitted quietly.

If nothing else the topic had dropped from there, at least for the moment. Instead talk about how her little excursion in Havana had gone replaced it. Ah Tabai chuckled, the sound rather light-hearted considering what they were speaking about and what Tulum had just experienced. All the same it was a sound she liked a lot and she smiled back in response.

"At least luck was on my side then," Karissa pointed out.

A moment passed between them in silence again. There were still so many out and about in Tulum, probably just happy that for the most part everyone was all right. Karissa would have been lying if she said she wasn't relieved by that as well; things could have been much worse off then they had been. Still, she'd rather get things done and out of the way if she could help it tonight. Karissa was convinced that the longer she sat on the information she knew the more stressed she'd be.

"If there's not too much else to worry about now, would we be able to go somewhere where I can tell you that story now? I'd rather get it out of the way when we can," Karissa said.

Mia was quiet, much preferring it that way in the first place. Her mind would have normally been whirling with worries around this time, having holed herself up in her room the past couple of weeks. With something to focus on, it wasn't so bad.

Aside from the sound of pen meeting paper, there wasn't too much conversation between them. Mia bit her lip on occasion, squinting as if that would help her while she drew.

When he did finally speak, her stomach churned again. She didn't know what the best thing to do in that situation was. Stay silent and hope for the best or cooperate even if it meant giving the Templars the upper hand. Her mind whirled, trying to find the right answer.

Mia had to tell herself to calm down, push those thoughts aside, when her heart felt like it was beating abnormally. She'd survived this long without any panic attacks, she wished to keep it that way.

"I see," she finally answered, albeit quietly.

She couldn't think of much more to say and instead focused on calming down. The thought of meeting the grand master soon left her nervous and jittery however and the heat certainly wasn't helping matters.

'At least Karissa's safe, she thought, a hard frown tugging at her lips. 'but what am I supposed to do?'

----[x]----

Karissa took a long moment to mull things over and Ah Tabai didn't interrupt her. She was a smart woman, she knew what was at stake here and no doubt that troubled her. Ah Tabai doubted any words of solace would help.

He let her think it through, a few long moments passing before she replied. It was a short one and that hadn't surprised him. They would have to change the subject, focus on something not so grim.

Eventually, that topic had cropped up and if anything, she smiled again. It was a nice thing to witness, having seem more troubled expressions on her features since meeting her.

"That seems to be the truth," he replied a little lighter, sparing a nod.

Another beat of silence passed and she seemed to be mulling over something again. Ah Tabai waited, not wanting to interrupt her thoughts. Perhaps they were important or perhaps he was merely being cautious.

He nodded in agreement before he motioned for her to follow. They would return to his home and speak if she was willing to share. Ah Tabai couldn't deny feeling a little anxious to hear what she had to say.

"Of course, mi'lady," he replied. "I am sure we have much to speak of as it is. I can not deny being a little curious of what you have to tell as well."

If anything at all, that might take her mind off of a few things for the evening. Would it just replace previous worries with new ones? Ah Tabai couldn't be sure. He didn't know Karissa terribly well as of yet and couldn't say exactly how she handled her troubles. At least, in the end of things, she was being open with him.

It was easy to tell that what he'd said bothered Mia on some level. He spared a glance at her but otherwise didn't act on this observation. For all Charlie knew it might just make her grouchy and he'd rather not get snapped at. For the moment he'd leave the topic alone until it became a problem.

Whatever was on her mind was a mystery to him and he left her to it. Occasionally he could hear people passing by his house but for the most part it was the fountain pen scratching over paper that kept the quiet away. Occasionally he'd glance at her only to be given a look. It wasn't so much annoyance so much as it was to remind him to sit still for her.

It was once such time where he got this look did he heave a sigh and run a hand over his face anyways. "You're killing me, poppet," he'd said only to be waved off.

Nonetheless they remained like that until Mia would undoubtedly grow bored. It wasn't like Charlie was about to go back on what he'd said and take them out, not tonight. First he had to make sure Mia could at least hold off any offenders whether they be assassin or drunkards. Considering she didn't seem the type to take to fighting Charlie could only wonder how such things would end up.

Though it wasn't usually how he'd spent the night it was certainly comfortable enough. Mia didn't seem to mind the quiet though maybe she was so lost in thought that she had no time to complain. Finally he reached over to poke her. That serious look didn't suit her much especially so when she took to gnawing on her lip every so often.

"Oi! Not getting too lost there are we?" he prodded.

----[x]----
The conversation had been short, riddled with long stretches of quiet between them. If Ah Tabai was bothered by these lapses where Karissa grew lost in thought he didn't act or say anything on the matter. She was grateful for this, rushing her wouldn't do either of them much good, especially with the situation as it was now.

Finally she asked to get the story telling over with; the sooner the better, she figured. Though Ah Tabai agreed it didn't make Karissa feel very relieved, instead she still had to worry about how he'd take the 'story'. While he'd taken things well so far what she had to say might seem fantastical and she'd rather not be accused of making things up if she could avoid it.

All the same Ah Tabai led her off, presumably to his home. It wasn't anything to look twice at here, just another of the same little buildings she spotted before though perhaps Ah Tabai preferred things like that. If nothing else they'd speak freely here and without any possible eavesdroppers. It would be difficult enough just explaining things to one person.

Once inside she hesitated briefly, having to steel herself before she'd start. Ah Tabai was waiting and obviously curious on the matter.

"I already said how all of the assassin and Templar business is just a story where I came from and while that's not a lie it's not exactly the whole story," she muttered, having to force herself to speak up louder when next she started, "your little Piece of Eden, well... it seems to have sent Mia and I back in time..."

Karissa smiled sheepishly at that as if it would somehow make it easier to believe. It was only a moment before she was reaching for the pouch at her belt, fishing for her wallet. It had the assassin symbol on it as well but it was the ID inside that she needed. While she fumbled, attempting to tug it out she would explain.

"It's become or... will become common practice for everyone to have identification, see?" she said, holding out her ID. It had taken a few tugs to get it loose from her wallet but it would hopefully be enough to give her words believability. Karissa gestured down at the date of birth on the license before continuing on, "Date of birth, 1991. I'm not even supposed to exist right now."

Mia withdrew into her thoughts, only occasionally glancing up when Charlie shifted. She'd glance up at him, waiting on him to settle down again before she would continue drawing. This mannerism continued, even after Charlie had complained.

She swiped at her forehead, feeling hotter than she did before. Panic attacks normally resulted in this and she tried to ignore it though she wished she could take a cool bath. That would at least help quash the attack a little, even if it wasn't nearly as bad as the first one she had.

Despite the long minutes, studying his face and drawing, she couldn't escape her worries. A part of her just wanted this all to be done and over with. Meeting the grand master and trying to explain what she knew, it would be best if it just happened painlessly and she got on with her life, wherever she might end up.

It was at some point Charlie had taken notice to her withdrawing again. He reached out to poke her, much as he normally did, and drew her out of her thoughts.

Mia blinked, halting in her work. For a moment, she didn't register his question. "W-what?" she said and shook her head. She swiped at her forehead, fountain pen still in hand. "No, I'm alright...I think."

She couldn't exactly say that was truth, she never had an attack in this kind of heat before. Regardless, she told herself it would pass and ignored whatever look he shot her way.

"Really, I promise," she carried on. It wasn't as if this was entirely foreign to her, after all. She knew it wasn't a life threatening ailment, just an annoying one.

----[x]----

Karissa remained quiet even as they walked back to his home. He didn't move to break this silence, allowing her time to herself. That seemed to be for the best, given the moment. Ah Tabai didn't know her breaking point and pushing would do her no good.

The walk seemed shorter than it really was. He had spared a few glances around Tulum, noting who was still out and about. The panic had settled and an air of normalcy returned to his home. He was thankful that no worse had come out of the attack.

Once inside his home, he halted and turned to her. An air of anxiousness still seemed to cloud her. Ah Tabai offered a small smile, if only in reassurance. He wasn't sure if it helped her or not but she eventually started to speak.

He paused, listening to her words. They were hesitant and forced ones but nonetheless, she was managing. Ah Tabai listened intently even as she started fishing something out of her pocket. The object notably had their symbol on it as well but it seemed that wasn't what she wanted him to see.

Ah Tabai took the odd offered object, carefully studying it. The material was foreign to him and her painting, or at least he thought it was a painting of her, was on this odd little thing. He turned it this way and that, fascinated by what it was. Indeed, the year she had mentioned was plastered right onto the object.

"The Eden pieces are said to do a great number of things," he replied finally, "but I have never read of a case such as this one. Pulled through time, it sounds as if it is the work of a fine weaver of tales. However, given the light of the situation, I have little doubts that it is a possibility."

He wasn't sure what he saw dance on her expression. Doubt, relief, anxiousness? It seemed like a mixture of all three and more. Ah Tabai offered the object back, the silky surface a foreign thing to him. He wasn't sure how he felt about the odd object.

"If you know of us and the Piece of Eden then you know there is little need to be nervous, mi'lady," he brought up, sparing a small smile. "I have no intention of calling you a liar. There are great possibilities here and they all need to be considered."

Mia took a moment to gather her thoughts or so Charlie assumed. She blinked up at him like an owl for a long minute before she stammered out an answer. His eyebrow raised, waiting to see if she said nothing else. When she didn't he tipped his head back, observing her further.

"You think?" he echoed, "How do you not know if you're all right?"

Her pencil was still now, leaving only silence for a long stretch of time. Charlie took the time to really study her face and her eyes, trying to discern what she'd been brooding about for so long. She'd steadily grown more and more serious as she'd drawn and it had caught his attention after awhile. If she'd share what it was Charlie would have a better of idea of what had her so serious now.

When she didn't answer his new question but instead asserted that she was fine Charlie offered a shrug. If she wasn't going to open up he couldn't exactly force her. No, they needed her to open up to them willingly, even if she hadn't met the grand master yet and had come 'round to their side. Charlie was confident she would in time, even if her friend was smuggled away by the assassins.

"If you say so, luv," Charlie muttered.

He took to bobbing his foot left and right to pass the time, a little anxious to be up and moving. Still, he wasn't about to just up and leave or take Mia out with him to his usual haunts. He reminded himself to see what she was capable of at some point, wondering if she was capable of defending herself.

----[x]----
Ah Tabai had smiled at her, perhaps urging her on silently. It hadn't been long after that did Karissa manage to start talking and then she found it a little hard to stop. The sooner it was out, she reminded herself. If this was out of the way she wouldn't have to worry about it quite as much. Ah Tabai merely waited even as she fished for her wallet and held out the ID at the end of her rambling.

Several seconds passed as Ah Tabai looked the card over. Whatever he thought of it Karissa couldn't tell, not by his expression at least. He was clearly mulling over what she'd said though anything else was a mystery to her. All she could do now was to wait for him to say something. That wait left her feeling anxious as if she were sitting on pins and needles.

Eventually he turned his eyes to her, speaking about the Piece of Eden. Though he said he believed her Karissa wasn't sure how he could, even to her it sounded like something she'd just made up on the spot. The Pieces of Eden were powerful but Karissa had to think that even those things had a limit to what they could do, wouldn't traveling through time be one of them? She shook the thought away for later.

Karissa blinked, startled at the mention of having nothing to worry about from then. She quickly shook her head, perhaps a little hard then she intended. "N-no, it's not that! I'm more worried about how large the target on my back might be," she admitted, "I only know a few things, in practice, about self-defense and fighting, y'know."

It was something she hated to admit but just sitting back and pretending otherwise wouldn't do her any good. With Mia on the other side who knew if they'd still be searching for Karissa as well? She'd rather be prepared. 'Besides, I kind of want to help out on the field too,' she continued to herself. Perhaps that was a thought she'd express later on though for now it remained private.

Mia could feel his eyes on her. She shifted uncomfortable. The racing of her heart was enough but the staring only made her uncomfortable. He'd questioned her words and it hadn't been a big surprise.

"Yea, I think," she answered carefully. She paused in her drawing, setting it on her lap and heaved a sigh. She regretted the action coughed, evening out her breath. "It's just a panic attack. It'll pass. I'm just not certain of it because I've never dealt with one in this heat."

It wasn't as if she had to deal with one like this, after all. Normally, she had immediate access to a cold bath or just stepping out into cooler air. That wasn't the case here.

"The heat just makes it feel worse," she explained further, "which is why I really like the cold. At least I could step outside. That always helps."

She shrugged her shoulders then, unsure of how to go on. At least this way, she couldn't be accused of not opening up a little, even if it was just concern on a medical issue. There wasn't a lot she could do about it.

"Sooo, could you please stop staring at me?" she asked, trying to fit some playfulness in her tone. It was hard when her heart was racing so much. "It's getting kind of creepy."

----[x]----

Karissa remained silent, allowing him plenty of time to mull over things. It wasn't something he could simply judge over all at once. He would have to take some time during the night and next few days. In a way, she might have expected that.

She shook her head in response, explaining things clearly. Ah Tabai nodded in agreement. Karissa was a smart one and she caught on quickly. That was good, given the circumstances.

"You are correct in your assumption," he answered, "the Templar's are in a desperate spot. They will be looking for you and will do what they can to keep your friend on their side."

The worry was there and wasn't difficult to miss. Both she and her friend were in danger. It wasn't as if it was entirely their fault however. Despite what had happened, both had tried to defend themselves in means the means they knew best.

"As for general combat, that can be accommodated," he carried on, "that is if you are interested in learning, mi'lady. You seem rather eager in aiding our case, if I may point out."

Ah Tabai wasn't going to deny her a chance to learn how to fight. Given her position, it would be a good thing. The Templar's would be searching her out as it was. Learning to fight, knowing that she could protect herself, would lift a weight of concern on his part.

Charlie huffed a little, unsure of what to make of all this panic attack stuff. It sounded like nothing to him but then what did he have to get frantic about? All the same he'd turned his attention away, something of a difficulty considering there wasn't much else to do.

"Whatever you need, poppet," he muttered, reaching for his nearby glass. It wasn't filled with anything he really wanted but water would tide him over he guessed.

The night passed slowly after that, excruciatingly slow really. She never stopped drawing as it was, the scratching of the pen on the thick paper almost annoying after some time. Charlie didn't say anything on that, he'd rather not have her snapping at him again for something so small. Even then it was boring for him.

Eventually Charlie headed off to bed, shooing Mia off to her room as well. He'd rather not have her out and about in the living room on her own when she was panicking or whatever it was that was bothering her. If nothing else he'd keep his bedroom door open that night, just in case. He could be a light sleeper if he had to be and that night would be no different.

"Just come callin' if you need somethin', you hear?" he called out behind him as he kicked his boots off and tossed his hat on the nearest table. Whatever Mia said he'd wave over his shoulder in response whether or not she was glancing his way.

----[x]----
Karissa didn't say much at first, well aware that what Ah Tabai said was true. Templars would want her on their side even if they already had Mia, no doubt the idea that the assassins might have leverage from Karissa would be enough to drive them to either take her or dispatch her entirely. The latter was the one she was worried most about.

When she remained silent Ah Tabai took it upon himself to carry the conversation forward again. The offer to train with the others, even if it was just to defend herself later, was at least something that would be familiar to her. Though it was only a little what she did know had always been thanks to her older brother.

"Now that's an offer I like to hear," she cheered, a smile slipping over her lips, "so, does that mean I should call you 'Mentor' now?"

If she wasn't mistaken there might have been amusement on Ah Tabai's face from that question. She felt a little pride well up in her chest at that. All the same she wouldn't be mentioning much of what she thought about Ah Tabai to anyone else. No, a harmless crush wasn't anything Karissa was going to be toting around for everyone else to talk about if she could help it.

"But uh, before all that would it be possible that I could get a bath?" she wondered, perhaps a little sheepishly. Karissa ducked her head a little, toying with her hair—it was greasy to the touch. "It's been way too long and I'm not used to all this conservative bathing stuff."

Whether or not she got a bath after that wouldn't matter much. The night had settled hours ago anyways and she'd be off to get as much sleep as she could. There were still repairs to try to help with in the morning on top of any other sort of thing that might come her way. She was sure there was a lot to Tulum that she'd barely had time to see as it was.

Conversation was very little after that. Mia focused on trying to calm down rather than making conversation. It was hard to do. Once an attack happened, it passed on it's own time without the aid of medicine.

At some point, Charlie decided to call it a night. She ended up back in her room with little to do but doodle. Until the attack passed, she wouldn't be getting sleep.

Leaning her back against the bed, she quietly stared at the flickering flame of the oil lamp. She was nervous about this meeting with the grand master, didn't know what to expect or what to say. Karissa knew the important stuff, Mia didn't and she worried what kind of position that would put her in.

Mia shifted uncomfortable, repressing another cough. Part of her wanted to run off and the other half was too afraid to. Chances were Charlie would be listening in if she tried anything as well.

She drew her knees toward her, wrapping her arms around her legs. Resting her head against them, she closed her eyes, trying to think of something else.

----[x]----

The worry had melted away into some form of joy after he had offered training. She appeared excited and by her words, he could say that there was relief there too.

He shot her an amused look, as subtle as it was. The training would be a benefit and would fill her days with something to do. No doubt she would need the distraction as it was.

"If you wish to," he answered, a short chuckle passing his lips.

After the initial excitement passe, she'd ducked her head, leaving him curious for a brief moment. Another question cropped up, a simple request, and he wouldn't deny that much. She'd been on that ship for a while after all.

"Of course," he answered, sparing a nod. He motioned for her to follow him before they would set off.

Ah Tabai showed her to the place where she could bathe. From there, he bid her a good night. Someone would show here where she would be staying. He hoped she would fare well through the night. She would need the rest for the coming days.

Charlie didn't expect much most days anymore. They were quiet in Havana, no assassins stirring up trouble for him to have much action. With Mia to watch over it wasn't like he could just set sail out to sea at any day he pleased either. No, the grand master wanted her nearby in case of any kind of trouble being kicked up or information needed from her.

At one point they'd gone to meet with Grand Master Torres and while Charlie figured things had gone smoothly enough Mia might have disagreed. She'd gone in antsy and jumpy and had come out only slightly better off. Charlie couldn't begin to fathom what her worries were about, it wasn't like they were lockin' her up and torturing her for information.

That day had them wandering around Havana again in search of something to do. He still steered them away from the tavern even if he wanted a drink and a good brawl badly. No point in letting Mia get a whiff of that kind of life, not yet anyways. She was still as jumpy as a hare as is.

"Come now, love, surely you've got some ideas as to what you want around Havana," he prodded, reaching out to nudge her arm gently.

What he'd observed most days was that Mia preferred to follow his lead. While this wasn't exactly a bad thing, at least for him, it didn't leave him with much of a clue as to what she'd prefer around the city. All he really knew was that she liked the beach but dreaded going out further into the water at any point. What all the fuss about that was Charlie hadn't asked.

----[x]----
It was a quick affair to be shown where she could take a bath at, after which Ah Tabai left her to it. She took her time washing up before she found someone to show her where she'd bed down for the night. After that there was nothing to do but to attempt to sleep.

The days after that passed rather quickly. True to his word, Karissa began to train with the other newer assassins that resided in Tulum these days. The humidity made it difficult for her, hard to breath in it standing still. Oftentimes she had to step back and catch her breath and only when someone coerced her to. In a way, it was a little embarrassing to be the only one having such trouble.

During the times she wasn't training or learning something new from any number of the assassins Karissa took to wandering around Tulum, especially around the beach. Though the beach was as craggy as parts were sandy it was still a place Karissa liked, wading in the shallows or sitting just out of reach of the waves. She still had yet to go swimming but then again no one had had any spare time to be out there with her either and it seemed like a lonely venture not to mention dangerous without a partner. Karissa didn't know where the tides pulled strongly after all.

It was here that she spent her time that day, reflecting over the weeks that had passed since coming to Tulum. There still hadn't been any word about Mia's whereabouts or situation either. She tried to shake that thought away. There was enough to worry about in Tulum without stressing about what happened to Mia on top of it. No sense worrying if she couldn't do anything about it she thought.

Gazing out at the deep blue water, Karissa turned her thoughts to more pleasant ones, wondering when Ah Tabai might have a moment for her again. Some days he sought her out as she wandered Tulum or while she was training with the others, oftentimes sharing stories as she'd promised. Much of what she had to share Karissa worried when straight over his head however, it was hard to explain things from a time with technology so different from now.

She rolled her shoulders, feeling the hot sun beating down on her back and shoulders. It wasn't something she minded, not after the initial sunburn that'd plagued her over her shoulders the first few days out at sea anyways.

The days seemed to pass painfully slow. Mia wasn't getting used to the heat and that made it hard to sleep at night. Her nerves being shot was enough, all of that mixed with homesickness and Karissa's well being.

The meeting with the grand master had finally come and gone. That was a little relief on her nerves but it wasn't much. If anything she knew she wasn't going to be hurt or worse. She was an asset though she didn't think she was much of one.

She swiped at her eyes, trying to rub sleep out of them. She'd always been one who needed good sleep. Unable to get anything normal, it was taking it's toll, she was well aware.

Mia spared him a glance when he reached out for her, asking where she wanted to go. She offered a small shrug in reply. "I don't really know a whole lot about this place," she answered.

What did people do to pass time here? Aside from the norm she saw like drinking or a man 'enjoying' the company of a woman. Occasionally she could hear music but those were normally in taverns as well and Charlie was steering clear of those.

"What do you do for fun?" she asked instead. She didn't feel very enthused but maybe that mood could come about.

----[x]----

The weeks had passed quickly. Karissa had taken up training with the other assassin's though she had her troubles. She didn't due too well in the humidity. It took a little time before he became aware that she came from a place where it was cooler for nearly six months of the year. Knowing that, Ah Tabai informed a few others to keep an eye out for her.

When she wasn't training, she wandered or sought him out. She was able to share a great many things with him and in turn, he shared stories as well. Karissa always seemed rather interested in what he had to tell.

He had gotten word that Karissa was hanging around the beach again. She'd done this quite frequently though never actually took to swimming. Perhaps she was staying on the side of caution on that matter.

Ah Tabai wandered toward the beach himself, only sparing passing greeting to the guards nearby. She was there, near the waters edge. A thoughtful expression was on her face, one he'd noticed quite often.

"Lovely day, is it not?" he asked, watching as she turned her attention toward him. She looked a little startled at first before she settled. "I would have assumed you start swimming the moment you had a chance. You were so excited on that cliff when we first showed you."

It was a light prod and perhaps she was a little embarrassed. There was nothing to be embarrassed about however. A little banter here and there was nothing harmful.

Charlie didn't have to glance at Mia to know she was eyeing the buildings and people around them. She always was, really. It seemed to him that no matter what she saw and experienced here there wasn't anything that made her happy in any sense of the word. It left him at a loss as to what to do here in Havana.

He resisted groaning when Mia asked him what he liked to do again. It wasn't necessarily the same question but he would have thought it was a simple answer to pick up on too. It wasn't like he was complicated or some such—least he didn't think he was.

"I would have thought that'd be obvious, love; sailin', brawlin' and drinkin'!" he crowed, grinning at her as he did so.

Catching sight of the look on her face it was clear that Mia didn't share these likes. With that out of the way for good it just left Charlie with the ever present reminder that he didn't quite know how to deal with entertaining Mia in any way. She liked to draw and look at the ocean, what more could be done from that? Even those things didn't seem to keep her occupied enough anyways.

"You know we're walking around Havana so that you can find something to your liking, right?" he pointed out. It wasn't as if he'd said it out loud before, maybe she just thought he was out and about for something else. "I'm not doin' it for my health, love, gotta keep an eye out for yourself sometimes too!"

He offered her a shrug after that statement, maybe to ease whatever annoyance flared to life in her at that. Mia didn't seem to be a fan of his pointing out obvious things to her.

----[x]----
Karissa wasn't sure how long she sat out there on the beach that day, ignoring the way her shoulders burned from the direct sun. In a way it was comforting with how sore her muscles still got. Training rotated daily so depending on what was being taught to her and the other newbies Karissa sometimes came away with stiff muscles the next day, that day was no different.

Ah Tabai's voice reached her, causing her to blink up at him as he neared. The thoughts she'd been mulling over were shoved to the side for later, instead eager to speak more to Ah Tabai. She learned a lot from his stories, whether it be about the history of the assassins or of his own people.

She smiled, shaking her head as she turned to gesture out at the ocean. "That's still on the agenda, assuming I can find a partner with the time. I'm not overly fond of running into something nasty that I can't see hidden in the seaweed."

Glancing back at Ah Tabai then Karissa caught the inquisitive look. She supposed he wouldn't have known even if she was wearing glasses. It wasn't like glasses were widely produced in this time yet and swimming wasn't a huge hobby anyways.

"I'm near-sighted without my glasses, and wearing them underwater isn't exactly something I'd recommend—kind of distorts things, I guess you'd say. Not to mention the headache that comes with it," she explained. A moment passed as she nodded her head, a thoughtful look crossing her features before she grinned at Ah Tabai. "Unless Mentor wishes to accompany me."

She didn't have a whole lot to say to his response. Honestly, it was obvious she just wondered if there was something different. That wasn't so much the case not leaving her too surprised.

"I see," she replied quietly.

Mia wrung her hands before they fell back to her side. His explanation was simple, and again, obvious enough. She knew they were out for her not for him. Still, it was hard to find things of interest in a time when most women spent their days as house wives. That and the lack of technology was another matter entirely.

She offered a slight shrug before she said, "teach me something than."

Mia wasn't finding a whole lot of interest around Havana. In fact to say she liked it other than the sights would have been a lie. The heat was driving her up a wall and made her feel sick half the time. If learning something new offered a distraction she'd take it.

----[x]----

He spared a small smile in her direction when she finally looked at him. Whatever was on her mind was left unsaid. There might have been quite a bit after the weeks that had passed. No word on her friend would be nerve wracking, no doubt.

He strode forward a little more, listening as she spoke up. Karissa seemed a little happier with his company. She always smiled, even after she was so deep in thought. It hadn't gone unnoticed though Ah Tabai said nothing of it.

"At least you know to stay on the side of caution," he answered easily, "you have mentioned you had little experience in the ocean before, I believe."

He halted nearby, glancing out at the ocean. It wasn't often he took in the sight anymore. It was always here, something that he'd long since been used to. For her, it seemed to have the opposite effect.

She spoke again, drawing his attention. The glasses perched on her nose were odd ones, not like the ones he'd seen before. Regardless he listened without interrupting.

"I can not imagine that would be comfortable," he answered, sparing a nod, "losing them out here would be troublesome, no doubt."

His brow rose when she requested swimming with her. Regardless, it was slightly amusing and he spared her a small smile.

"I suppose I could extend some time," he relented easily, "that is, of course, if mi'lady does not mind it."
