There wasn't much to argue over and Ophelia decided not to say much else on the subject. She just had to trust that Aceline would be fine. It wasn't as if they wouldn't be seeing each other again, after all.

There seemed to be more concern on the mention of her attacks. Why wouldn't there be? She wasn't even sure if things like panic attacks were addressed in this time.

"They come, they go," she explained, shrugging her shoulders, "unless one is particularly bad, I just live with them."

It had been amazing that she hadn't had one at this point. Then again, she hadn't been thinking much about home or what would happen to them. Now that Aceline would be gone, she worried thoughts like that would worm their way into her head.

"As long as I'm calm and, more or less, don't think too much, I'll be fine."

That was always the trouble of it. Distractions helped, provided she could focus on them. She wondered briefly if this 'Misfortune's Child' thing would make things worse. Ophelia would have to take the into account as days went on.

----[x]----

Glancing down at her, she didn't seem pleased with his words. While this was not unexpected, he had to wonder why. What did he say this time to make her sour so much?

She grumbled again, glancing elsewhere. Eventually, she did explain what she wanted. He hummed slightly in response.

"Then I will do my best to restrain from such things," he reassured, "if that makes you happy."

Aceline was obviously the proud type. She didn't like to be treated like a child and he would do his best to avoid that.

They continued walking more or less in silence. He hoped Aceline's mood would improve over time. Vali wasn't all that bad and his family wasn't either. It would just take some time to get used to.

"You still do not look all that pleased," he pointed out, sparing a quick glance around. It wouldn't be long now, returning home, "is there something else I've done?"

Vali normally wouldn't extend this much patience. Still, he had to sway this girl. He merely had to extend that patience.

When Ophelia answered him the reply was a blunt thing, barely giving him more than he needed to know at that. He frowned deeply at that. If there was no way to make sure that they would not come round at all much less at a bad time then Cyril wasn't sure how they could see to it that she remained safe. He knew how to fight, true, but if she panicked and grew further distressed in any such times...

He shook the thought from his head. There would be time enough later to figure something out, it wasn't as if anyone knew what Ophelia was just yet other than those on their side. Plans could be laid out just in case in that time.

"It sounds like it can be quite the troublesome affliction," Cyril murmured thoughtfully, "I would like to hope we can avoid any of that in the future."

Seconds passed as Cyril lead them around the area. It wasn't too far out, close enough that Ophelia could dash back inside the church for safety if she needed to. Very few were brazen enough to carry out crimes in what they deemed a holy place. Cyril counted their lucky stars for that.

Finally he gestured to Ophelia and wondered, "Tell me, is there anything that can be done to make your stay more accommodating?"

It wasn't as if she would be leaving anytime soon. Even the other deacons and regular churchgoers seem to realize that in the past few days. While this would not be something he'd extend to everyone he could do what he could for Ophelia.

----[x]----
At the very least Vali seemed to take her complaint into consideration. Whether or not he'd do as he said he would had yet to be seen however. Aceline supposed they had all the time in the world to find out and so dropped the subject hastily. There wasn't a need to go bickering down the street and attracting attention.

Instead of that she grew lost in her thoughts, wondering what kind of people consisted of Vali's family. It was almost worrisome, especially if they were going to be keeping an eye on her too. Vali seemed to be someone of high standing after all and she'd grown up low class as it was, even if the times were different. She had no doubt that she'd probably unintentionally step on some toes.

It was about the time when she started to wonder how far he lived from that church again, attempting to ignore her worries, did Vali speak up again. Almost reluctantly she tore her gaze from those around her to him instead, brow furrowing.

"As of the moment? No," she answered simply, turning back to those around her again. Even then she could all but feel his eyes boring a hole in her and she sighed. It looked like he'd be pestering her for answers at this rate... "You wouldn't be happy either if you didn't have a penny to your name and essentially taken from your only friend."

Vali could make of that what he wanted, Aceline wasn't about to elaborate further after that blunt of an answer. Instead she took to hoping that his home was close. It was hot out and these itchy clothes didn't make it any better. Even if the air inside would be staler she'd at least be out of the direct sunlight.

Ophelia knew it would be concerning for him. She should have mentioned it before. While she hadn't had an attack yet since coming here, that didn't mean it wouldn't happen.

Out of the corner of her eye, she caught him shaking his head. It was a brief thing, one she barely paid mind to before she glanced elsewhere. It was busy here though no one seemed to cause trouble.

"It can be," she replied, "they're very tiring as well."

The last she had one she slept through the entire day and managed to stay asleep throughout the night as well. She'd never been one to spend her time sleeping that much unless she was ill or just exhausted.

When he asked if there was anything more he could do for her, she glanced up at him. Ophelia pondered over it for a long moment. It wasn't as if there was much here, not when she was so used to things in her own time.

"If you have any books, that would be nice," she said, "if anything, those might be a nice distraction."

Reading would help when she needed it. That hobby had always been a bit of a fail safe to clear her head. It was only an added bonus that it might give her an opportunity to learn as well.

----[x]----

Aceline was quiet, mulling things over. Vali wouldn't begrudge her the chance to do that. This was another large adjustment for her, it seemed, and she wasn't pleased with her position.

Not many would be however. He could at least sympathize with that much. Vali just hoped given time, she would come around to the situation.

When he asked if there was anything more he could do, he was met with a quick reply. It was easy to tell that she had soured though, Vali mostly brushed it off.

"Well," he said, turning his attention elsewhere, "the opportunity to ask remains."

If anything, she had that much. Vali could only give her so much in her current position. She would just have to learn how to live with things like this.

Time passed rather slowly for the two of them. The walk was a lengthy one but eventually, he paused. He motioned to his home, sparing a glance down at her.

"Here we are," he finally said, "I do hope you find yourself a little more comfortable here then you were at the church."

Yet again Cyril found himself hoping that they would not need to deal with Ophelia's panic attacks or at least not in any moment where it might hinder them. Any number of things could happen with a Child of Misfortune around after all, especially violence towards them. If this happened during one such time...

He shook the thought away, turning the conversation to another topic entirely. There was no using brooding over it just yet, the day was still younger after all.

"Books, hmm? I am sure we have some to spare around the church for the time being," he answered, thinking about it. There were several of them but if she was such an avid reader it would not keep her preoccupied for long. "It might be something we'll have to delve into stocking up on."

He worried about the price of such things however. Books were not cheap and copies could be scarce. Cyril didn't mention that for the time being. Ophelia was still opening up to him, he'd rather not have her shying away because she felt she was asking too much. Cyril would find a way to get her these books in time.

"Anything else?" he prodded.

----[x]----
Aceline did her best not to scoff at his reply. What good was asking questions when she'd lost everything she called her own? All she essentially had now were her glasses and she had the feeling that if she didn't need them they would have been taken from her too. She couldn't help feeling that Vali's response was a little callous, in a way. It was a feeling she tried to ignore for the time being.

The walk was long and in silence after that point. Aceline didn't mind it for the time being, if anything it gave her time to brood over everything without Vali attempting to pursue a conversation. Perhaps he had his own thoughts to entertain in that time.

Soon enough Vali came to a halt, gesturing to a building before them, it was only then that Aceline drew out of her musings. She blinked up at the large home, brow furrowing a bit. It was bigger than she'd expected and again she worried what kind of a family he had that she'd have to be dealing with from now on. She wasn't a fan of noisy places and being in them all the time after all.

She shifted, a little uncomfortable with the idea of living in such a big place for who knew how long. Vali seemed proud of what he called home and even sounded as if he really did hope she'd find this place more accommodating than the church. It took Aceline a moment to realize that Vali was waiting on her to say or do something even as she continued to stare up at the large house, taking it in.

"It's... not what I expected," she said finally, picking her words carefully, "well... after you..."

The issue of the panic attacks was pushed away for the time being. With their lack of medical knowledge on the subject, Ophelia could do little about it. Really, she could only wait and hope that an attack would hold off.

Instead, it took another turn. She wondered if there were even any books within the church. Ophelia could imagine there wouldn't be many but she had little idea about that much.

"That could be nice if there are," she responded. Ophelia didn't want to ask for too much.

When he asked if there was anything else she could think of that would preoccupy her time, she had to think again. Ophelia would have to pick up old hobbies of sorts to preoccupy her time.

"Paper and some ink," she replied, "something to write with, if that's alright."

If anything, she could draw. She hadn't touched that hobby in a long while but it would pass the time. If she couldn't sleep at night, it would help.

"If that's not asking for too much, I mean," she added after a moment.

----[x]----

Vali could only wait on Aceline. Whatever was on her mind left her quiet for a long moment. She studied his home as if unsure before speaking up. Vali resisted a scoff at her words.

He strode forward, entering his home. It was a rather quiet place, always was. His family wasn't large. This was why he fought so vehemently to protect what was left of them.

"There aren't many here," he pointed out to Aceline, "so you've nothing to worry about in terms of dealing with people."

In that regard, he was a little grateful. The misfortune children were not seen a good light. Due to that much, his small family would be perfect for the situation.

Vali was about to open his mouth to speak again when a another pair of footsteps caught his attention. He lifted his head, finding a younger boy trotting up toward them and smiled slightly.

"You are finally back," he said, "Is this the girl that supposed to be living with us now?"

Vali nodded in response to the boys words. He motioned to Aceline, ignoring the curious glances her way. "This is Aceline," he introduced, "Aceline, this is Sorin. He is one of the few that you'll be sharing this home with."

He studied her features, wondering what she thought of the situation. If anything, she merely looked a little awkward. It was a strange change of pace, having seen such confidence from her before.

"She's very strange," Sorin pointed out, "Where are you from?"

Cyril was quite sure that there were books that would be to her liking somewhere in the church, he would just need to do a bit of digging around. Perhaps later tonight he would do just that. He didn’t mention that however, no use getting her hopes up so soon. He had no idea of what might have been tossed or given away anymore by the other deacons.

“Paper and ink we have plenty of,” Cyril told her a moment later, “many records have been written and kept in the church walls.”

Most of those records were unimportant things, at least unimportant to anyone not working within the church itself. At least Ophelia would have something to occupy herself with if he could not get her any books in a timely manner. Perhaps she might even grow more at home within that dusty old place if that was the case.

“Many would have asked for more,” he pointed out, easing her worries at least a little.

It was quiet again for a time and Cyril took to listening to those around him. It was the best way to find any trouble ahead of time, too many people were not smart enough to keep their plans to themselves. Then again speaking in crowded areas was also a good way to make sure it was harder to hear anything from afar as well. It was easier to figure out who might be eavesdropping.

For the time being there was nothing of interest to be heard though he still kept an ear out. No telling when that might change. For the most part Ophelia didn’t mind the silence either.

----[x]----
Vali didn't waste any time in striding forward, leading them inside this large place. Aceline had no choice but to follow after him, picking up her pace to do so. Inside the area looked furnished well, no doubt more testament to how wealthy this family was. Aceline awkwardly glanced around, unsure about even standing where she was, feeling as if she was just dirtying the place up. She'd never been in such a nice place before...

Vali hinted at the number of his family and Aceline found herself blinking up at him, brow furrowing. A small number of them? She would have figured he'd have a larger family, especially given this kind of place they called home.

"I see," she answered thoughtfully. At least that was one less worry to scratch off the list.

Whatever Vali was about to say was interrupted by a rushed pair of feet, a little boy coming to a halt before them. He didn't look very old, maybe nine or ten at the oldest. He seemed to have no problem in asserting himself in front of strangers, in fact the little boy seemed right at home with Aceline's presence. She seemed to be dismissed for the moment, instead the boy—Sorin, according to Vali—took to asking about her to Vali first.

When Sorin's attention was back on Aceline she crouched down to his level even as he pointed out quite bluntly that she was weird. In a way she supposed that was true, truer than any of them knew at this time.

“I‘m from far away; I don‘t think it‘s even on any kind of map yet,” Aceline answered carefully.

Sorin seemed to take that answer into consideration, his brow puckering as he did so. As this went on Aceline glanced up at Vali, a little curious now of what else she could come to expect of this family. They all seemed to know she‘d be staying with them as it was already.

Ophelia was glad to hear at least one thing they would have an abundance of. Paper and ink might have been such a meager thing back home but here, she wasn't sure.

"I'm glad to hear that," she replied with a small smile.

If anything, that was a relief. The walk was doing her some good as well. At least, having the distraction was a great help. Aceline being gone would still affect her however.

He pointed out the fact that others would have asked for more to accommodate them. Ophelia wasn't really sure what all existed in this time so she had a lack of items to think of.

"Maybe in time, I'll find other things that I'm interested in," she replied.

In the quiet that followed, she spared a brief glance around. She tried to keep her eyes averted more or less however. Ophelia didn't want to cause any panic with the way her eyes were now.

She really did wonder why people were so paranoid over things like this. Red eyes might have been an ill omen to them however. This was a very superstitious time, after all.

----[x]----

Vali took a step back, allowing Sorin to get acquainted with Aceline. The boy was young and curious. He would prod for answers, no doubt. For the moment, it remained unseen on how he would react to her later on down the road.

"Her home is very far away," Vali confirmed, "and Aceline has very little to her name. I expect you to treat her kindly, Sorin."

Vali watched as Sorin's expression contorted as if he was insulted. Vali's lip twitched into a slight smile at that.

"Of course!" Sorin replied, "Just because she's strange doesn't mean I'm going to treat her badly!"

A chuckle left Vali as he shook his head. He was glad Sorin didn't seem to be afraid or Aceline. He took relief in that much.

"That is good to know," he answered.

"Well...you should probably tell mother soon." Sorin pointed out, "She will want to know."

"We will stop to see her as soon as I have Aceline settled in," Vali confirmed, "do not worry. The least you can do is at least let her know for me, hmm?"

The boy nodded brightly before giving a brief wave. With that, he trotted down the hall again, going off to deliver the message. For the moment, that would be the best.

"He's a good boy," Vali pointed out, "albeit rather young and reckless. Do not let him bother you if he becomes persistent."

She did seem pleased that they at least had something for her to occupy her time with. Cyril just hoped he would not exhaust the entire supply of paper and ink too quickly. While he knew they had plenty for the time being he had no idea what Ophelia wanted to do with them and how quickly she'd exhaust the allotment. He supposed in time he would find out.

He spared a nod as she spoke of finding other things that interested her. Cyril once again found himself wondering how her life differed from what it was now. They had no reason to not believe her despite her claims of where she and her friend came from no matter how fantastical it sounded.

"I am sure there is plenty you'll find in time," he agreed lightly, "you seem as if you'll be persistent in the endeavor in any case."

At the very least he hoped that was the case. If she merely sat around and sulked or waited for things to be handed to her then nothing would be done. Good things passed by those who merely sat around and waited after all.

"Speaking of, perhaps you have somewhere in mind that you would like to visit while we are out and about," Cyril offered, gesturing around them.

----[x]----
Whatever questions Sorin might have had about her home were interrupted as Vali backed up her claim. She found herself grateful for that, it was harder to brush off questions from a kid after all and she didn't want to give away too much information. Ophelia had done enough of that already...

It was as little surprising that Vali was already telling people to treat her well. She glanced up at him, curious again of what he was after. Maybe he thought she still had information about the Ottoman Empire's eventual fall though if that was the case he'd be sorely mistaken.

Sorin had already darted off, waving at Aceline before he did and leaving her alone with Vali yet again. She rose back to her full height, still nowhere near as tall as Vali was. She took to brushing out the wrinkles in her too-itchy clothes as she spoke up this time around.

"I don't think that'll be too much of a problem," she answered, still a little unsure of what she'd been expecting here. So far it wasn't at all to those expectations though.

It was a matter of waiting for Vali to lead the way now, she wasn't nearly confident enough to just go strolling around in such a nice home as it was and she had no idea what places were considered off limits, if any.

Whatever Cyril was thinking of was a mystery to her. Ophelia didn't prod for his thoughts. From what she discovered, doing so often got here no where.

She nodded in response to his words. If anything, his tone sounded lighter. That helped, knowing a lot of the concern had passed. She could worry about her attacks when the time came.

"That much, I can manage," she responded, trying to lighten her own tone.

Her gaze wandered around again. She hadn't seen much of it, especially so since they arrived her at night when Vali found them. From there, she mostly stayed in the church.

"I don't know much of this place," she said, "I've only seen the river and what's beyond that briefly. Where would you suggest?"

She was genuinely curious of the area Ophelia just didn't know where to start. There were many places to see, no doubt.

----[x]----

Aceline shot him a glance that he ignored. Whatever he thought of his words was left unmentioned for the moment. He did want her treated well, knowing all too well of how the misfortune's children were treated throughout history.

Only when Sorin had run off did she get to her feet. Her statement was quite simple. He only spared a nod in her direction.

"You handle children well, it seems," he pointed out briefly, "Sorin seems to have taken interest in you."

With that said, he started forward again. The halls were empty aside from decorations or furniture here and there. They didn't need much but his home still looked presentable.

"There is not much that I would advise against here," he explained, "though, when Sorin's father comes back, you'll want to speak with him. He may have some things to go over with you, where you can go and the like."

Vali often times knew the man to be a stubborn old one. He would no doubt want to keep Aceline out of his work if he could help it. Vali worried a little on his reaction to Aceline as well.

"He may not expect your...confidence," Vali warned, "so do be careful on how you act around him."

He spared her a glance, watching her expression. She didn't seem pleased with what he said but it was unavoidable. Aceline would have to adjust a little at a time with the people here.

It was a relief that Ophelia appeared to understand the sentiment of looking for things to do for herself rather than expecting them to be handed to her. Cyril didn't have that much time in the day after all and none of the other deacons would be willing to do that either. A few might help her find a book or two to borrow, assuming she was careful with them, but otherwise she was just another person they had to perform their daily work around.

"I am glad," he admitted, just in case she would think he was ignoring her if he said nothing.

From the corner of his eye Cyril could see her adopt a thoughtful expression at his next question. Perhaps Vali did have the right of it, in a way. Making Ophelia more comfortable might be more beneficial in the long run.

He took a moment to clasp his hands behind his back, continuing their leisurely pace. They were slowly making their way away from the church square though Cyril wouldn't be taking them too far out. No, there were too many variables right now and he couldn't be sure that Ophelia could defend herself if she had to.

"I am afraid that any places I might recommend are too far out for my liking," Cyril mulled out loud, "not until I can be sure that you can properly defend yourself if something were to happen anyways."

As he'd spoken Cyril had taken to scratching idly at his neck, something he sometimes took to doing when he expressed his thoughts to others. He let his hand drop back to his side a moment later, glancing down at Ophelia once more to gauge her reaction to that comment.

----[x]----
Aceline offered a small shrug in answer to him. She supposed it wasn't a stretch that she was all right with children. She had lived in a household with a six-year-old before moving in with Ophelia so she supposed it was something that came over time. "I suppose I've had practice," she murmured.

When Vali took off down the hall, his pace even enough for her to follow without much trouble, Aceline followed suit. Something told her she wasn't about to be let out of sight, not yet at least so if she had strayed behind Vali might have just stopped and waited anyways. No sense in dragging things out she supposed. As they walked she took things in carefully though Vali chose to speak again soon after leading her down the hall, drawing her attention to him again.

She hummed in thought at the warning. The idea that her confidence might put people off in this era felt heavy on her shoulders. 'Just another thing to hide, I guess,' she brooded, a little glum at the very idea. Hiding things like that was so tiring and, in her view, unnecessary.

"Well," she started, pausing for a moment as she struggled to find something to say, "it's not like I have much of a choice. I'm just a guest, kind of."

Glancing up at him again she mulled over his words nothing the ones that he'd chosen. One specific phrase caught her attention the most however. He'd said "Sorin's father" not just "father", it left her a little confused. Was Vali only half-related to Sorin or was Vali not close to his father? Maybe it was something else entirely. The battle against Templars and assassins would mean family and other loved ones could easily get caught in the crossfire, maybe it was his way to try to distance himself to protect them...

"You said 'Sorin's father', is he not yours too?" she wondered after a moment, the thought nagging at her far too much for her to let it go.

Ophelia wasn't expecting much out of the church. If she could find something to do to preoccupy her time, she would. Even simple observing was something of a comfort to her and it was a fascinating thing to see how people were in this era.

His words were brief ones though she was finding that was somewhat normal. Ophelia didn't mind that. Sometimes silence was for the best.

Ophelia waited patiently for Cyril's answer. He seemed to be thinking it through. She already had an idea of not straying too far from the church.

When he did answer, she hummed briefly in response. She wasn't a fighter, never had been. She knew a few tricks but had never really put them to practice either.

"I don't know anything about fighting," she replied. There wasn't any need to lie about that. If she had, she could have very well put herself in harms way. "I've always been passive at heart though I doubt that's much of a surprise."

They continued along slowly, no real destination set in mind. Ophelia's gaze would flicker about on occasion but she always ended up looking away when someone nearly met her gaze.

"Are red eyes really that frightening?" she asked, albeit quietly. The answer seemed obvious but a part of her couldn't wrap her head around it. There was something missing about this 'misfortune's children' business. She just didn't know what yet.

----[x]----

Aceline didn't have much to say in regards to his comment. Then again, she was becoming rather quiet as of late. He couldn't begrudge her that. Things were very different for her now and that showed.

He allowed her time to brood over the warning. It wasn't much, she would see the man for herself in time, but he could at least tell her how best to act. Vali worried that her attitude might cause some issue.

"You've your freedom to say as you please," he answered, "I can only advise you here and there on certain people or actions."

Vali knew she would view this as a gilded cage of sorts. In some regard, it was. That did not warrant him to control her thoughts or actions. She was a confident woman and while some might not appreciate that, he found it interesting.

He hummed shortly when she spoke up about what he'd said. In some regard, the man was his father. In others, he had slightly distanced himself.

"More or less," he answered after a moment, "I do what I can to protect them, even if that means distancing myself at times."

His family was at stake here and he would not let them suffer. If Vali could help it, he would keep them safe, even if it meant putting his own life on the line.

Cyril couldn't help but to scoff in amusement at her assessment of herself. It had been easy to tell which of the two women was a fighter after all. No one who gave information that quickly was someone who aimed to fight in any case. He shook those thoughts away a second later.

"I do believe you've begun to state the obvious now," Cyril pointed out simply. He hoped that wouldn't be much of a habit however. He was an observant man, he had to be, and would pick up on such things in his own time.

In the silence that followed after Cyril took care to watch her from the corner of his eye. He could see her glancing around and often ducking her head or hurriedly looking somewhere else. Only when he paid closer attention did he find out why. He hummed in thought at that. She did not have long enough hair to hide her eyes behind, however much it might have bothered her to do so lest he might have suggested that route...

"Hmm?" He blinked down at her, barely aware he'd taken to scratching idly at his neck again. Forcing his hand back to his side he mulled over the answer to that question. "It has more to do with the stories behind those with red eyes."

Cyril shook his head to silence Ophelia when she opened her mouth to say something more. He had no doubts that she was about to ask what the stories were. Now was not the place or time for such things, out in the open like this.

"There is time enough later for you to hear about them," he told her.

----[x]----
Aceline hadn't answered right away though Vali did, assuring her that she could speak how she wished. Her frown deepened a little at that. While he said that Aceline was aware that she didn't have much choice in the matter. If she acted out too much she could very well just be moved elsewhere to somewhere more akin to an actual prison.

"If you say so," she answered eventually. It was all getting confusing as to what she was supposed to do and not do anymore.

There would be time to brood about that later, when she was alone for the night she decided. She was grateful for the change in topic and that Vali had at least answered her question as well. If she had to live with these people she'd like to know what the situation was after all.

She hummed in thought at that, a brief sound as it was. So, her last assumption had been correct then. It'd be weird to consider this Vali's family if he continued saying things like that though. In the end Aceline supposed it didn't matter, it wasn't any of her business.

"I see," Aceline murmured, "sounds tiring."

Many things were tiring she was finding, at least to her. Then again she'd always had trouble getting restful sleep as it was. She kind of worried what it would be like now in this time without technology to make people more comfortable or over-the-counter sleeping aids.

Ophelia had stated something that was obvious though that wasn't so abnormal. Cyril caught on quickly. She was a pacifist at heart. Having no experience in fighting, she worried about if she'd have to pick up the trade or not.

That conversation seemed best for later however. If there was something she would need to learn, the most she could do was her best.

Her gaze downcast again, she tried to brush her bangs a little closer to her eyes. Her hair was short and she dreaded having to grow it out. Still, given the situation, it seemed for the better.

"Stories?" she echoed after a moment. Ophelia didn't get far in those explanations. Cyril had quickly mentioned it might not be best for out here.

"Will you tell me later, then?" she requested, "I'd at least like to have an idea or something about all of this..."

If it helped her cope at all, then it would be for the best. Whatever changed in her and Aceline was worrisome in and of itself. Who knew what she would have to keep an eye on later on down the road.

----[x]----

Vali was terribly aware that the trust between them was very little. This wasn't something surprising to him. It may take quite some time before Aceline warmed to him or anyone on the Templars side. She had little freedom and she was aware of that.

He would try to remain patient. For the time being, that's all he could do. Aceline was stubborn, she wouldn't sway easily. That would be the continually problem, he was sure.

The walk was rather slow, letting her take in the area. Things would become familiar for her a little at a time.

"Well, you seem optimistic," he replied after a long moment.

He heard her hum briefly at what he explained. For the most part, when he glanced at her, she simply looked tired. Had he slept much in the past few days?

"There is quite a bit that is tiring," he confirmed, "but it is all worth it in the end."

Whether or not Aceline understood that, he couldn't say. She seemed to stick with the assassin's beliefs. Vali had people he needed to protect and he would do anything he could to make sure they were safe.

"Regardless, I'd certainly hope things calm in the end," he muttered after a moment. Taking a turn down a hall, he lifted his hand to motion toward a room, quickly changing the subject. "This is where you will be sleeping. I hope it is enough."

As he expected Ophelia was already asking if he'd tell her those stories at a later time, away from curious people who might eavesdrop. Though the stories existed not many cared to share them except in hushed whispers. Cyril couldn't begin to understand what had first caused such a fear of these people in society as a whole to begin with but it was enough to keep people wary and even to go as far as to prosecute children of misfortune when they were found.

"Perhaps, if another hasn't already told them to you by that time," Cyril said simply, "you will come to know many others, I am sure. Not all of them will be friendly, mind you."

He would let her mull over that for awhile. She couldn't very well remained cooped up in the church all the time and though Cyril would pass along whatever information she gave there would be times when someone might wish to speak to her personally. Occasionally Cyril might need to relocate Ophelia to keep her safe in the future depending on what might happen as well.

For the moment that all didn't matter. Those things would be dealt with in time, plans would be made ahead of them over the days to boot. Ophelia would find out about all of that when it was needed and not a moment before.

"It is nothing to get worked up over, I assure you." The sentiment might not do much but Cyril figured it would be best to say it all the same. One never knew until one tried at any rate.

----[x]----
Vali took a moment to answer, maybe taking that time to pick the best way to reply. When he did he'd chosen the sarcastic route, his tone rather dry. Aceline offered up a shrug at that and said, "I prefer to think realistically."

Their walk was a slow one, perhaps Vali was trying to let her get acquainted with the place. It was something that Aceline appreciated. A place this big would take time to get used to, to learn where everything was. Part of her was irrationally worried that she'd get lost just trying to find the kitchen later. She didn't bother to express those worries, seeing no need to. This was especially true with the conversation already playing out as it was.

"I think that's more of a matter of opinion," she said simply. What might have been worth it to him might not have been something that another would fight hard for at all, after all. She wondered if he realized that or not.

Vali soon came to a halt after that, gesturing to the room he'd lead her to. The door was already propped open, maybe on purpose though Aceline couldn't say for sure. Inside it looked as nicely furnished as the rest of this place did, the colors all of a richer nature—dark browns and reds mingling with beiges. It was funny, in a way, Aceline had always associated green with Vali.

Carefully she stepped inside, as if afraid she'd dirty up the floors, to peer around at the decor here. It wasn't a badly decorated room, that was for sure. A few painted vases were placed along a wooden shelf here and there and one large on off in the corner to fill space. The bed didn't look very fancy but then Aceline's definition of the word would have varied greatly from what this time and culture provided for it. She was sure it was a nice bed given that.

If anything, she had the reassurance that she would learn more about the children of misfortune. Whether it was from him or someone else, she didn't care. She just wanted the information and what to expect, if they had that much at all.

"That'll do then," she replied, "As long as I'm hearing them from someone."

While she didn't expect them all to be friendly, she took that into account. People feared these misfortune children for whatever reason. She was sure she couldn't hide her eyes from everyone.

"I won't worry about it right now," she replied, "It's not like there's anything I can really do about it. Not unless there's some way to change my eyes back to brown."

Ophelia wished that was so easy. Back home, something like this could just be taken care of with contacts. It was a shame she couldn't do that here as well.

----[x]----

Aceline's words were rather flat. This didn't so much surprise him. She wasn't pleased with the situation and being separated from her friend only made that worse. In the coming days, the arrangements might be even less favorable for her.

"I suppose that's a good quality," he answered, if only to fill the silence.

He was quiet even after she spoke again. If that's what she believed, then he couldn't change it. He could only hope that his plan of sorts would work out in the end.

When he stopped at her room, he allowed her to glance around and study it. This would be her place for many weeks and he hoped it was enough. Vali would do what he could to keep her happy. That in and of itself might have been a difficulty.

"I hope that it will do," he finally said, "All things considered, it is better then being trapped in a time room."

She might not have realized where the others originally wanted to put her. That was still an option if Aceline didn't cooperate in time.

"If you would like, you may write your friend on occasion," he continued, "I'm afraid you will not be heading back to the church on as many occasions as I said. I simply didn't want further arguments from your friend."

Cyril had no doubts that eventually Ophelia would hear of the tales. It would simply take time, however much of that was the question. It wasn't exactly necessary that she knew of them however only that she take caution around people. It would be difficult, especially so within Constantinople. There was little that could be done about that outside of leaving altogether and that wasn't in the cards from the looks of it.

It was a relief when she agreed not to grow concerned about such things at this moment. With the news of these panic attacks of hers it would be best to keep her as calm as possible for as long as he could. It wasn't as if Cyril had any sort of inkling as to how to solve that problem quickly if it arose after all.

"There is plenty of time to speak of such matters, I would have figured you would want to indulge in lighter affairs for the time being," Cyril mentioned, "or have I been mistaken?"

Just minutes ago she had wanted to calm herself and now she was attempting to gather information on the very information that was the root of her current problems. It was a rather strange turn of events especially this soon after the fact. He kept that to himself however.

He waited for her answer then, feeling no need to rush her. It wasn't as if there was anything at stake here much less it being entirely important. This time Cyril was merely out to sate his own curiosity on the matter.

----[x]----
While she inspected the room and it's furnishings Vali remained near the doorway. She didn't have to look at him to know that he was watching her, Aceline could feel his eyes on her as it was. It was a feeling she tried to ignore. Even still the prickling feeling in her back it brought about wasn't one that she was fond of, making the endeavor difficult.

She shook her head when he spoke up again, more in disbelief rather than a denial that the room was unfit. 'This room alone is bigger than my old living room,' she reflected. Rather than admit to that she kept it to herself. Aceline was sure that it was more than obvious she wasn't from any kind of wealthy or even well-off background anyways.

"I think I'll live," she answered instead. A beat of silence passed before she tacked on, "or I won't."

It sounded like Vali scoffed at that thought Aceline paid it only a slight amount of attention. No, it wasn't until he spoke again did she turn to him. Disbelief was written on her face, that much she was sure about. Vali didn't seem fazed by the look she shot him, at least not outwardly. Aceline liked to pretend it had some hidden effect on him, if only for her own ego.

"If you want my trust and cooperation you should start by not lying or being misleading," Aceline pointed out scathingly. As if it were only an afterthought she next said, "You're not making a very good case as to why I should trust you."

Ophelia did what she could to calm her mind on the issue. There wasn't much she could do however. When something got lodged into her head, it normally stayed there for long periods.

She glanced elsewhere for a time, trying to pick out something of interest. This place was still foreign to her. It was a little fascinating to see how different people were compared to those from home.

"I don't know of many 'lighter affairs' that could be attended to," she answered simply.

If Aceline was still around, she could have done something. For the time being, Ophelia had no idea when she'd see her friend again. It wasn't as if she knew anyone else or even Cyril so well for that matter.

Not more then ever, she just wanted to go home. Fantasizing about being in some story or game had always been an escape. Living it now? She wasn't sure if she could handle it, especially so without Aceline with her.

----[x]----

Aceline took her time to look around the room. Whatever was on her mind, he could only assume. She didn't say much, merely shaking her head. Vali took that as an answer for the room being fit enough.

When she spoke, she still sounded hesitant and glum. Vali knew that this kind of attitude would stick around for a long while. She would come around in time.

"You will have to," he answered simply, "I am sure you will be fine."

The look she shot him was of little surprise. What he had claimed back at the church and now were drastically different. She no doubt was not pleased.

"Did you want your friend to panic?" he retaliated easily, "I, much like yourself, caught that very easily. Causing any more distress to the situation was not going to do anyone any good."

She not might have trusted him but he still felt he had some point. For the time being, they would simply have to agree with their disagreements on the matter.

Cyril gestured about their surroundings, at the many buildings and people, before he said, “Why there is plenty to speak about, even just your surroundings can be a topic to explore. I see you glance here and there surely you are curious. Ask your questions and I’ll answer best I can.”

If nothing else it would help to keep her calm for the time being. Cyril couldn’t begin to say how long that would last when the realization that Ophelia’s friend would not be stopping by as often as had been indicated after all. He’d rather keep the peace for as long as possible.

“Or perhaps you merely wish to walk in silence?” he wondered.

Trying to judge what she wanted by her expression was difficult when Cyril still did not know much about Ophelia as a person. He had gleaned some of the more obvious things over the days they’d spent together already but it was not enough to say he really knew her. It made things a little difficult from time to time.

In the end of things Cyril could only guess and do his best to keep Ophelia content. She didn’t seem to be as high maintenance, in a sense, as her friend and for that Cyril counted his lucky stars.

----[x]----
Her joke seemed to have fallen on deaf ears but then she had stated it rather dryly too. It might take some time for Vali to get used to her sense of humor bouncing from sarcastic to occasionally the dry sort. In the end it didn’t matter much for the time being, not when another topic had come around.

Vali’s answer to her accusation didn’t calm her any. He didn’t know Ophelia like Aceline did even if he’d had a bit of time to pick up on the more obvious things about her personality. For a second or two they merely stared each other down, neither balking. Aceline took the time to plant her hands on her hips trying to at least appear a little more confident.

“And what’ll you think will happen when she figures it out? She’s not dumb,” Aceline argued simply. Silently she added, ’And she bottles things up…’

She didn’t give Vali any time to answer instead sighing and letting her hands drop back to her sides. Despite being stubborn and hardheaded Aceline wasn’t the type who liked conflict like this. Usually she just silently endured whatever bothered her and only spoke up about it occasionally before dropping it again. Now was no different.

“Whatever. You and that deacon friend of yours can deal with whatever happens, god knows you think you know it all,” she scoffed, “all I know is that I’m hungry.”

If nothing else this would change the topic and leave Aceline feeling a little less uncomfortable with it all. She’d worry about Ophelia later, when there was time to. For now she had to worry about this big place and getting lost in it much less dirtying it up.

Ophelia was quiet as she spared quick glances around. People were strange here, foreign. She couldn't find herself quite as comfortable out in the open. It might have been the hostility so many had shown the day before however.

She rubbed her arm, trying to shake the panicky feeling in her. It bore it's way deep and wouldn't be easily quashed. Things like that never were for her.

Cyril was already listing off an number of topics that could be talked about. On occasion, she'd glance at the things mentioned. What could she really learn from this place?

"No...that's not it," she muttered when he asked if she'd merely wanted to walk in silence, "I just don't really know what I want."

Ophelia was confused. She couldn't shake that from herself. So blindsided by the decisions that had been made, she wasn't exactly feeling comfortable. Aceline was the only thing familiar she had. Having her taken away made Ophelia feel less than safe.

"Maybe you could just...enlighten me on the history of this area?" she asked. She didn't know much about it so that seemed to be the best place to start.

----[x]----

Aceline still appeared calm despite what he had claimed of her friend. True enough, he'd seen the panic in the other one. She was the more sensitive of the two and the more open one. While this might have been difficult on the both of them, it was for their best interest.

He huffed a little, shaking his head when she countered his argument. There was little to be done. The woman would have to live with the circumstances she was under.

"Smart or not, she will have to cope," he answered her, "Between the two of you, she has been cooperative and easier to deal with. What is done is done."

She didn't appear happy with the answer though who would have been? Vali wasn't heartless. He could sympathize with their distress. He had his job however and he would obey orders.

Aceline changed the topic shortly after. Vali couldn't help but scoff at her. Regardless, he motioned toward the woman to follow. If she was hungry, he could find her something.

"Come then," he answered, "Perhaps we can find something that will make you happy."

She was fidgeting. Cyril hadn’t needed to glance her way to know this, he could see it from the corner of his eye. There was a second where he had to resist shaking his head about that for fear of making Ophelia draw away from him. Without her friend here to bolster her it was a very real possibility.

When he offered to walk in silence with her she had fidgeted all the more, claiming that she didn’t know quite what she wanted. Cyril cocked his head to one side, eyebrow raised. If she didn’t know what she wanted Cyril had little idea of how to keep Ophelia happy and to open up to him. This was becoming troublesome for him though he kept that thought to himself.

“Constantinople has much history, too much to be told in a single afternoon.” Cyril paused, scratching at his chin for a second in thought. “It is quite a city, however, and never seems to stop bustling. It goes by many names as you will soon learn…”

This was a start, he figured. If she wished to learn then Cyril would impart some knowledge that came to his mind along their walk. Perhaps she might grow less skittish this way if she had something to mull over.

“Tell me, Ophelia, what sort of a place have you hailed from? You seem unfamiliar with city life,” he pointed out.

----[x]----
Neither she nor Vali seemed likely to back down from this argument. Aceline could hear him scoffing, a shake of his head following thereafter. She tried not to let this bother her but it did, a little anyways. She still didn’t like being separated because she was being difficult but it didn’t seem like she had any say in this whatsoever.

Aceline resisted rolling her eyes at his quip. Of course she wasn’t happy with any of this, how could she even begin to be when she was in such a place like this? This large place, more akin to a mansion than a simple house, wasn’t the kind of place Aceline ever thought she’d step foot in in her life. It just wasn’t in the cards for her.

“Well, you’ll get points for trying at least,” she muttered dryly. Nonetheless she followed after him.

The walk was a fairly long one; Aceline didn’t know how people could stand such a big house like this. It felt so unnecessary, yet here she was following after Vali without a word. She took the sights in again, glimpse all manner of paintings and furniture and rugs to name just a few. All of them were rich in color, complementing each piece around it.

The walk was quiet though soon enough they’d arrived in what could only be the kitchen. Inside were several people though not nearly as finely dressed as Vali or his little brother had been. The woman who stood out was the exception to this and she seemed to be direction two of what could only be servants in what they were doing.

It was only when Vali spoke up, catching this woman’s attention did she turn and smile.
“Vali, there you are! I was beginning to wonder when I might meet your charge after Sorin ran through exclaiming that he’d seen our new house guest.”

If her uncertainty had bothered him, he didn't make mention of it. In some regard, Ophelia was grateful for that. Anymore thoughts already weighing on her shoulders would push her over the edge. She didn't want to get to that point.

He started to explain a little bit about the area. There was history she would have to look into at some point. Customs and the like were all foreign to her. She knew very little of this place and at least wanted to be informed.

"It seems as such," she commented noting how busy the place was, "I'm not sure how I feel about that."

Growing up mostly in the country, she was wary of crowds and buildings with too many people. It was an odd phobia for her to deal with. Too many people just caused discomfort.

He was quick to ask about her home however. She blinked up at him briefly before lowering her gaze elsewhere. Looking up too long would risk someone seeing her eyes.

"There wasn't much in my home," she answered, "It was a tiny village surrounded by hills and trees. The summers were too hot and the winters were too cold but I liked it there. There weren't nearly as many people as this either, so it was always very quiet."

Ophelia went into minor detail about the area. She didn't touch on things like technology even though Cyril had hold of her cell phone. Those were entirely different things to deal with. If it kept she and Aceline safe, Ophelia would worry about how far she could say about those things later.

----[x]----

There was no further argument after that. Both of them had made their point and it seemed they wanted to leave it lay. Vali was very aware of her attitude. She was going to be difficult to deal with. If he had to, he would remind her that she could have been forced into far worse conditions.

The walk through the halls was a quiet one. He merely waved her retort off when she did speak up once. It seemed a rare occasion now as it was. This didn't surprise Vali. In time, she might cotton to him and the Templars cause.

In silence, the walk seemed longer than it should have been. Upon reaching the kitchen, Vali was not surprised to see the few people moving about. His mother was easy to see among them.

Already, she was coming toward the pair, mentioning the lack of news on Aceline. "Forgive me," he finally replied, sparing a small smile, "I was merely showing Aceline to her room."

He spared a glance Aceline's way, judging her expression. His mother was a bit of an uptight one. If anyone could guide Aceline in anyway, it would be her.

"This is Aceline," he finally introduced, motioning toward her. "Aceline, this is my mother. When I am not here, I suppose you will mostly likely be answering to her or my father."

From the looks of it, she appeared unimpressed by that thought. Vali pushed it aside for now. In time, she would have to adjust to their ways.

While Cyril talked Ophelia had taken to listening quietly. He still caught her glancing around as they walked, perhaps taking it all in though she never tried to stray from his side. This was good, it gave Cyril less to worry about if she kept like this. She definitely was the calmer of the two children of misfortune they’d found.

It was quiet between them for a short while as she mulled that over. Only when they’d gotten into the heart of any large crowds did Cyril notice the way she seemed to flinch away from people, attempting to keep her personal space as large as she could. With this in mind Cyril tried to accommodate this and steer them around such large groups of people.

“You will grow used to it in time,” Cyril assured her.

He’d asked about her home after that though Ophelia did not answer right away. Cyril glanced at her, taking in her thoughtful expression. Her brow had furrowed and she took several long moments before launching into an explanation.

With the new insight about Ophelia and her old home Cyril mulled over this. She seemed like the type of woman who enjoyed the simpler things by the sounds of it. Perhaps she’d be easier to help make content over time. All that needed to happen was to get to that point in time, however.

“It sounds like it was a quaint place,” he noted after a while. Conversation might help keep her mind at ease.

----[x]----
While Vali spoke to who appeared to be his mother, Aceline took the time to observe her. She was a tall woman, her dark hair pinned back in an elaborate bun making it impossible to tell how long it was. There was an intensity in her dark eyes that seemed to have been passed down to her oldest son. It was easy to see the familial similarity between her and Vali.

Aceline blinked, snapped out of her thoughts when Vali introduced her. There was a second where Aceline almost held out her hand for a handshake before she stopped herself. That wasn’t common in this time much less for women, that much she knew about. Aceline couldn’t even be sure if handshakes were common way of greeting each other among men in this culture either.

“It’s nice to meet you, ma’am,” Aceline said finally.

She couldn’t be sure of Vali’s reaction to this simple statement though she guessed he might have expected her to be snappish. At least that was her best guess. She’d been pretty rude with him that day though she liked to justify it that she’d had a reason to. ’Maybe I could try being nicer…’ she thought briefly.

”And a pleasure to meet you as well, dear. If my son finds himself away and you need to find me please just ask around for ‘Crina’, the servants will point you in the right direction,” Vali’s mother advised. She had an air about her of confidence, one that Aceline wasn’t quite expecting—perhaps that was due to the times she had found herself in and how many women were supposed to act.

“Uh, yeah… okay,” Aceline managed to say. “I’ll keep that in mind.”

It felt awkward being in front of someone with such a confident air such as Crina. Vali was another matter, he’d been a little rude to her at times and so it was easy to forget he was someone of upper society. Crina, not so much, she seemed to exude that about her person.

Ophelia was careful as to where she stepped. She didn't want to be too close to those around her. One wrong bump or glance could hint them on what she was. While she hated that thought, it was something she'd have to get used to.

"I hope so," was all she was able to say back. Ophelia wished for quieter places however. These bustling streets were not familiar to her.

After she had explained her home, Cyril mulled the details over. He looked thoughtful over the description. His comment was simple though it true. Her home had been a peaceful place.

"It was," she said, "I miss it already. I suppose I always will."

As far as she knew, there was no going back. It hurt to think about, making her heart race. She shoved it aside. Too many thoughts might build up, causing worse conditions. A panic attack out here wouldn't be favorable.

They continued walking on, no real desalination in mind, it seemed. Cyril might have had hopes this would settle her thoughts. These things weren't so simple however. Long after a distraction, they would simply worm their way into her head again.

----[x]----

Vali had studied Aceline from the corner of her eye. She had almost looked like she was ready to approach his mother. Instead, she stopped herself, her hand falling to her side. Whatever confidence and snappish attitude that was there previously was now gone.

Vali nodded, pleased by what she had said. She would find that coming off as rude with his mother would not be wise. The woman had a way about her.

"I am sure you will take care of her just fine," he added after a moment.

If Aceline ever calmed, became a little less bitter about the situation, she might find a friend in his mother. For now, he could only wait and see what might happen. Aceline merely appeared awkward now.

"You are free to look about, if you wish to," Vali advised, "We did come this way to grab you something to eat, no?"

He couldn't be sure how much she had been eating through the passed few days. Portions were small in the church and if she had any problems with her nerves, she might not have been eating enough. She was already a scrawny girl as it was.

Though Cyril reassured her that she would grow used to Constantinople’s business given time Ophelia did not sound too sure. He had to resist sighing at that. No matter what he said or did it was doing little to keep her focused and calm. He was beginning to wonder if anything would aside from bringing her friend back to the church. That could not be allowed given Aceline’s influence over Ophelia.

Instead of dwelling on this Cyril asked about the home she’d been pulled away from. It sounded like quite the quaint little place and Cyril honestly had a hard time imagining it. He’d been in the city for so long that this was normal for him.

“There is little that we can do about that but go about things the best that we can,” Cyril pointed out. It was all he could say on that matter. “Perhaps you would prefer heading towards the Golden Horn instead. There are fewer crowds about the docks at least.”

Many guards took to patrolling the area and there were fewer stalls there from which merchants sold their wares. If this helped to make her more comfortable it might help to clear her mind in time as well. At least that was the hope.

“The air there might do you some good as well. You look rather pale,” Cyril noted, gesturing to her face as he did.

----[x]----
From the corner of her eye she caught Vali nodding, distracting her from studying Crina further. Brow furrowed, Aceline glanced at Vali. From the looks of things he seemed content that she’d taken a politer route with his mother. She resisted a scoff at that; she didn’t have anything against Crina and so didn’t feel a need to be contrary with her.

Crina shot Vali a rather amused look, eyebrow raised at his comment.
“I will think that we’ll do just fine when you’re away, I’ve plenty of practice taking care of you and your brother after all!”

Aceline couldn’t deny that it was a little funny to see someone railing on Vali like this, especially so when it was his mother. It seemed like she was the bold type, able to hold her own. At least that was the impression Aceline was getting from Crina.

She was quiet as she stood aside, clasping her elbow in her hand and peering between mother and son. The longer they talked the more Aceline could try to get to know Crina without risk of doing or saying something stupid. It wasn’t until Vali spoke to her did Aceline snap out of her thoughts, blinking at Vali.

“Well, yeah,” Aceline answered. Even so the idea of traipsing around this big kitchen was foreboding to her. It was nowhere near as advanced as modern kitchens but it was still much more than what Aceline was used to. The tiny kitchens she’d always known weren’t anything to look twice at. Even in this time period this kitchen was obviously pretty high class.

”Come now, there’s no reason to be hesitant on the matter. This home is as much yours now as it is ours,” Crina assured her. It did little to ease Aceline’s nerves.

“Uh… right…”

Ophelia swiped at her forehead. It was too hot here but the nights were very chilly. In some regard, she appreciated those cold nights. It had helped her get through several days, get a comfortable sleep.

His words rung true though she hated to admit that. She would merely have to get along without her home. This would take time. She hated the idea of just disappearing on her family. It left guilt weighing down on her.

"I suppose that's true," she answered. In time she'd just have to adjust, especially so without Aceline.

He suggested going near the Golden Horn. She recalled the place from weeks before. As long as they weren't getting on the ship there, she would be fine. Some clearer air and lesser people would be nice.

"I would like that," she replied, sparing a small smile, "Thank you."

If she was pale and it was so noticeable, that wasn't a good sign. She worried about her heart skipping beats. Ophelia just needed to calm down. It was the only thing she could do to keep an attack from coming on.

----[x]----

Vali had waved off his mothers words rather easily. He had no doubt the woman would do well keeping Aceline in her place. His charge would learn quickly that at times, she would not be answering to him. He, for all intents and purposes, would be the more lenient one between his mother and father.

"I am sure," he answered lightly, "She is a bit of a handful, you will find. I worry a little that father will not be so pleased."

Despite that, Aceline was quiet. Perhaps she seemed out of place here or maybe she was being polite. Vali didn't pretend like he knew what was going through that girls head.

He spared her a glance and a small smile. What his mother said was true. This place would be her home for months to come. She would learn to get comfortable at some point in time.

"You look as if you are ready to bolt," he commented, "No one will bite you, I swear it."

After some time, he hoped that she would understand. For the moment, he pushed it aside. He needed her to be comfortable, to cotton to him. Only after that might she decide to turn to the Templars side.
