| She blinked up at Nier when he asked about her drawing skills. She offered a little shrug in return and said, “I wouldn’t call myself an artist but-“
Weiss cut across her, the insult not at all very veiled. Reks heaved a sigh at that, tossing the book a glare. It seemed even when he might be trying to be friendly he couldn’t help but to be rude in return. She briefly wondered if he was even aware of that or not. She shook the thought away as quickly as it had come.
“Why would I be lying?” Reks shot back.
Weiss didn’t get the chance to answer befor Nier had taken it upon himself to mention that Yonah might like to see a few drawings here and there. Reks didn’t see why not, especially so since she was going to be babysitting the young girl. She’d see a doodle or two in time considering the fact that Reks liked to do a little every day if she could help it.
“I’ll keep that in mind,” she promised. Her growling stomach interrupted any reply she might have gotten.
Nier was already rising to his feet as he answered her about getting bite to eat. Reks appreciated that, not wanting to wait long if it could be helped, and followed suit. Weiss didn’t seem to have much to say now though that seemed to be a common thing; Weiss seemed to be talkative only when he felt like it and not a moment too soon. Reks didn’t mind that too much, at least not now.
----[x]---- It didn’t surprise him much when Cerise pursued the topic of his reaction, honestly he kind of expected it. Perhaps she was the type who was unable to let things go or perhaps her curiosity got the better of her. Hilary didn’t know which one it was but in time he might learn. In the end of things it didn’t matter which one it was however.
Hilary merely waved a dismissive hand her way, not bothering to glance her way. It might just encourage her to broach the topic further. He didn’t see a point to that, not when there was little he could tell her. He had no clue where her loyalty would lie if she found out about the fight between Templars and assassins, after all.
It had grown quiet for some time, the crunching of the apple and the shuffling of papers. He wasn’t really looking at his old notes anymore but he was debating on either keeping them or throwing them out. He had no reason to keep them and clutter up more space in his drawers.
“Hmm?” He glanced towards Cerise, eyebrow raised. “I would have thought it might be obvious, you were the only one up there who wasn’t colored.”
Had she really not noticed? Perhaps she hadn’t, frightened as she’d looked up on that bidding stage. No one of her skin color would have been up there like that without a reason and Hilary was intent to find out. The slave trader had to have had a reason for it, however insignificant it had been…
He shook the thought away for the time being. There would be plenty of time to find out over the coming days.
Hilary waved another dismissive hand Cerise’s way at the look on her face. “Put it out of your mind, worrying about it will do you no good. No matter my reasons I haven’t brought any harm to you so I would think you’ve no reason to worry.” | |

| Reks didn't seem to hold onto much pride over the fact that she was an artist. Perhaps she was bashful or maybe it was something else. He didn't have question to ask why.
"Weiss, be nice," he prodded once again.
The two seemed like they would be arguing quite a bit. Reks might get used to that in time. Weiss liked to pick at just about anything, even when it came to false accusations. Of course, that didn't mean he wasn't good in some either.
He ignored whatever comment Weiss threw back in favor of starting down the path. She needed to eat and take a bit of a break if she could. It didn't take them too long to enter a small place.
Nier sat down, motioning for Reks to do the same. "Get whatever you'd like," he stated, leaning forward, "you look like you need something, skinny as you are."
That was the concerning thing. She really was a scrawny one. How she managed to survive out there, Nier could only assume.
"Don't worry about the bill," he pointed out a moment later, "I can take care of it just fine."---- [x] ---- Despite her prodding, he wasn't giving up anymore information. She might just be pursuing a topic that would go no where. Finally, she decided to let it drop all together. In time, things might become clearer.
She finished off her apple, sighing slightly. It was such a nice taste. The fruit was so sweet, sweeter then those at home. Despite being pulled into another era, she supposed there were some good things.
When he did finally come up with a straight answer, she lifted her head. When she thought back to that time, Cerise realized she hadn't quite paid much attention to those around her.
"Was I really?" she asked after a moment, "I guess I didn't really notice..."
The topic seemed dismissed as well, Hilary speaking up about the fact that he hadn't brought her any harm. She nodded slightly to those words. True enough, he hadn't done anything to her. She hoped things would remain that way.
"Sure," she replied, "Yea...you're right. I'll try not to worry about it so much." | |

| At Nier’s warning to be polite Weiss started off on some tangent though it was ignored for the most part. Something about ‘seeing here’ but past that Reks didn’t catch much else. She did hear him huff after a few seconds when it was clear neither Nier or Reks was paying him any mind though.
Reks followed after Nier despite the fact that her feet still felt a little sore. She must have hurt them more than she’d thought with her mad dash from that shade earlier in the day. She was just lucky she hadn’t twisted her ankle or something too.
It wasn’t a long walk, not that she’d expected one either; this place was small, everything cluttered together. Only Nier’s home, that large building on the hill and the fountain seemed to be spaced out from the rest of this village. It made getting from place to place a little easier, if one could dodge around the people who milled about the cobblestone paths at least.
Inside what appeared to be a little restaurant of sorts, or at least what passed for one in such a small place, there were many others. Some were cleaning while others were just sitting about and enjoying a meal with each other. From the looks of it this seemed to be the designated busy time for this slice of day. Reks was drawn from this observation as Nier spoke up.
“A-Are you sure?” she wondered, feeling like she was asking a lot of Nier now. “I don’t need a whole lot or anything…”
If anything she’d gotten used to a small meal or just snacking through the day. Her family had never been wealthy and in later years it had resorted to scrimping by the end of the month. It seemed like this was the type of place that often had people doing the same thing.
----[x]---- It was quiet for a moment after Hilary mentioned what Cerise’s predicament compared to the other slaves had differed a little before she finally spoke. Hilary couldn’t help himself, he turned to her and raised an eyebrow to silently ask how she had never noticed. Even when the bowels of a ship became dark she would have been a beacon compared to those around her in chains. She was even paler than Hilary was who saw much sun during his work around Havana.
He shook his head, deciding not to say anything on the matter. Wherever she was from it was a place that was truly ignorant of the way things were in the rest of the world. In time Cerise would learn.
Eventually she agreed to drop the subject though Hilary wondered when the topic would be broached again. Cerise’s answer had sounded rather hesitant as if she still held onto the thought regardless.
“My, where has the time gone?” he noted, glancing out the windows. The sky was darkening in the east already.
He had no doubt that Cerise might remain up late into the night with how long she’d napped after arriving at his home. If that was the case Hilary might just doze on and off through the night, just to keep an ear out on any telltale noise or to wander down the hall one or twice on the lookout. He still couldn’t be sure of Cerise’s intentions now that she was away from that slave trader.
“It feels as if I’ve gotten nothing done,” Hilary mentioned when Cerise hadn’t said anything right away. At the very least it would keep her occupied from whatever troubling thought might be on her mind. | |

| Nier had ordered a drink for himself and whatever Reks decided on, the waiter would bring. He was showing her an act of kindness for everything she'd be doing in the future. Watching after Yonah would be a job at times, he was sure.
"Of course," he replied, sparing her a glance, "Don't worry about it. It's no trouble, I promise."
She was a polite one it seemed, taking into account that others were paying for her meal and allowing her to stay in their home. In that sense, he was a little grateful. He'd rather see someone like this then one that was ungrateful.
Taking a long swig of water, Nier sighed. It seemed his day was cut short but he didn't quite mind. It gave him time to wander and look for jobs he could tend to at another time.
He glanced back toward Reks when she seemed satisfied with her order. She still looked a little bashful about it however.
"After this," he started, if only to break the silence, "we can head back home and you can rest. Something tells me you're probably tired."
After running from the shade, injured as she had been, it was a wonder she didn't want to sleep that all off. Maybe she needed to settle her mind before that. Nier assumed that was the case.---- [x] ---- Cerise rubbed her eye, still feeling wary. Despite the sleep, she knew she wouldn't feel well rested for a while. The nap earlier was just another case of nearly passing out. Exhaustion still ebbed through her.
She blinked up at Hilary's expression only offering a shrug in answer. Her attention hadn't been on much other than the bucket that had been provided on the ship. Of course, she hadn't mentioned how sea sick she'd gotten either.
It wasn't something that she pursued. There was no point in starting an argument. She was mentally drained as it was. Instead, he mentioned the time.
Cerise's gaze wandered to the nearby window, catching the colors of the sky. She wandered a little closer to that window, studying the sky, wondering what it would look like closer to the sea.
"By that, I assume you're normally a busy one," she answered, glancing over her shoulder at him. From what it sounded like, that was the case.
As he had said, he went about this place often. Cerise could only assume what work he got done during those days. What kind of work might involve explosives, after all?
"Will I stay here if you go off somewhere or do I follow?" she inquired. That was something of an interesting point. She wasn't sure if he exactly trusted her yet, after all. | |

| It hadn’t taken long for someone to come and ask for what they wanted. Nier had ordered himself a simple glass of water before assuring Reks that it was fine. It was still a bit weird to let him pay for her meal when this wasn’t a date; still it wasn’t like she had any kind of money to pay for it…
“Well, if you’re sure,” she relented. There was no use in denying that she was starving.
At least the things offered to her seemed familiar in some sense or another. Many things had ingredients she could recognize listed on the little handwritten menu if the dish itself wasn’t entirely familiar—and many of them weren’t. That was something of a relief among it all, the things that grew in this world would at least be the same as where she’d come from. In the end she went with something with chicken in it, at least that she knew she’d be able to stomach.
Reks had taken the time to glance around at the handful of other people in this little restaurant when the man who took their order had left, assuring them it should only be a few minutes. They all dressed so much differently than what she was used to; some of the younger women seemed to wear nothing but shirts and panties while many men were decked out with several belts or little baubles on their person. It was strangely decorative in a deceptively simple way.
Nier broke through her thoughts and she turned to blink owlishly at him for a second or two. When she realized what had been said she shook her head, more to clear her head than anything else.
“That would probably be a good idea,” she agreed. The wound didn’t throb as bad as earlier but it still hurt and would for some time. Sleeping would help take her mind off of that and everything else for the time being.
----[x]---- When he’d mentioned how late it had grown this seemed to have caught Cerise’s attention. Hilary watched as she wandered over to the window, peering out at the sky. There wasn’t much to see from here, buildings in the way of the ocean and a good chunk of the horizon where it and the sky met. Still, it seemed to be enough to keep her attention for the time being.
Finally she spoke up, noting what he’d said. Hilary offered a little shrug. He couldn’t deny being a busybody but it wasn’t like she’d know just how much that was true on a normal day until later on.
“Perhaps,” he said simply. When asked about what she would be doing tomorrow Hilary thought about it for a moment or two. “I may have an acquaintance or two who might be willing to let you stay with them for the day though there are no set plans just yet.”
If she did need to trail along after him while he worked at least now was a good time. As far as Hilary knew there were no replacements for Rhona on the assassins’s side here in Havana meaning it would be relatively quiet. He shook the thought away before he dwelled to long about the deceased woman. There would be time enough for that later in the night when things had grown quieter still.
“It is nothing to worry about, all will be sorted out in time,” Hilary assured her, waving a dismissive hand as he did.
He rose from his seat then and rolled his shoulders. He was starting to feel stiff from sitting all day but there hadn’t been much else to do either. Tomorrow he would change that and find things to do if nothing needed immediate tending to. | |

| Reks seemed to accept his offer with no other argument. He spared a smile at that. Nier was glad that she decided to let him pay. She needed to eat, after all.
"I'm sure," he reassured once more.
It would take some time before any food arrived. Nier noticed her studying the people around her. Her expression betrayed her at times and she rose a brow at some of the women's attire. He didn't point it out.
Instead, he focused on idle conversation. It seemed the shades were becoming a concerning topic. Nier knew this was true, especially so with the way he carried Reks in today.
"Good, then we have a plan," he replied. He spared a glance toward her, "Hows your arm?"
She hadn't made any complaints about it. If that was the case, Nier was glad. He couldn't begin to think about how to deal with infection. He wasn't knowledgeable in that field.
"I hope it's not in too much pain. I could only do so much earlier," he continued a few moments after.---- [x] ---- The sky really did look pretty from what she could see of it. She wanted to see more of it, maybe another time. Perhaps it looked prettier near the water.
"Do you do any work near the water?" she asked after a moment, sparing him another glance, "Could I follow you there if you do?"
While she got sea sick so easily that didn't mean she couldn't enjoy the view. She wanted to see it with her own eyes. Despite the bleak situations, she saw some opportunity in this.
She hummed slightly in response to his words. So she might be seeing other people when Hilary was away. She wasn't sure how she felt about that yet. Of course, she wasn't out to extend a lot of trust either.
"Okay, I think I can deal with that," she finally said, watching him rise from seat. For a moment, she took the time to study how he was compared to her.
"I think I'd like to call it a night, if that's alright," she finally said, pushing herself away from the counter, "enjoy that bed a little more..."
It beat sleeping on leaky boards surrounded by people she didn't know. Miserable ones at that, as much as she hated to admit it. | |

| As she’d taken to studying the people around them, Reks again took to toying at the new tears in her sleeve. She was careful not to prod at the bandaged area itself even as her attention was mostly elsewhere.
The place was small, the walls made of stone and the furniture all made of wood. The darker corners were light up by tall candles; the sunlight that streamed in from the windows could only reach so far. All the same it was lit up enough for everyone to see without any real trouble. Still, it was much darker to Reks’s eyes after having grown accustomed to living with electrical lighting.
“It sounds like we do,” she agreed lightly, still watching those nearest to them. Reks tore her gaze away from them all to turn back to Nier, pausing in her ministration with her hoodie sleeve. “It’s better than it was earlier, especially when I’m not thinking about it.”
Reks didn’t mention the fact that much of the injury probably needed stitches to help prevent massive scarring. From the sounds of it there was no doctor that lived here locally and she’d rather not have Nier put himself out that much for her. She could deal with some ugly scarring anyways.
“So, what do you typically do?” she wondered.
----[x]---- It was odd to hear someone asking about if he worked near the shore or not. Did he look the type to? He had to wonder about that. Shaking the thought from his head he leaned forward to rest his chin on his clasped hands.
“I do not. My business is conducted throughout the city not by the shore,” he told her.
It was easy to see the way her shoulders sagged at that and Hilary resisted shaking his head. He wasn’t so sure what was so great about a trip to the beach of all things when there were much more exciting things to attend to but then he was always one who preferred a bit of trouble and action as well. Hilary had to remind himself of that sometimes.
Eventually Cerise claimed she wanted to get back to sleep. If that was the case then Hilary wouldn’t keep her up much longer. She looked better than she had before her nap but she did still look like she needed rest.
Hilary gestured the way she’d come in and said, “Far be it for me to keep you up longer than you wish. I trust you remember which room is now yours?” | |

| If he let himself admit it, she had a nice smile when it was there. It was a faint looking one, easy to miss. Perhaps there was some reason to that. In time, Nier might learn.
He felt some relief when she claimed her arm was feeling better. He'd done something good then. It looked like she was on a fast road to recovery.
"Good, I'm glad I'm good for something other than fighting or hunting," he replied, "Just tell me if it takes a turn for the worst."
For a moment, there was silence. Neither seemed to mind that fact. Honestly, she had a lot to take in and Nier would leave her to that. A little at a time would be best so she might not overwhelm herself.
When she turned her attention to his job, he hummed slightly. He did quite a bit around the village but he couldn't set on one really. He did so much already.
"I do quite a few odd jobs here and there," he answered, "Anything the villagers need, I typically will do for them and get paid. It keeps Yonah and I afloat. The villagers are kind and offer work whenever they can."
That's what made this place so great. So many people sympathized with his and Yonah's needs. They offered what they could when they could. For Nier, there was nothing he could do to pay them back.---- [x] ---- The disappointment must have been apparent on her features. Cerise did want to see the ocean. Perhaps in time she would. She'd just have to find a time and place.
"Alright," she replied, "Maybe I'll see it some other time. When I'm not throwing up in a bucket or anything like that."
Hilary seemed to leave it at that. Cerise might see it and she might not. So close to the water as it was, she figured some time she would. After all, she knew in this era most people would be traveling by ship.
When he asked if she recalled her way to her room, she spared a smile and nodded. "I do," she finally said, "Thank you."
With that said, she left the kitchen behind, started the climb back up the steps. It was darker in the hallway now so she picked her way through carefully. When she reached her room, she shut the door behind her.
Cerise heaved a heavy sigh, laying on the back. She would stare at the ceiling for a long time trying to sort her thoughts. Eventually, she drifted off into a deep sleep once again and wouldn't be disturbed until morning. | |

| If she wasn’t mistaken it looked like her answer had taken a bit of weight from Nier’s shoulders if the relief on his face was anything to go by. It really was weird knowing someone so concerned about her when they’d just met a few hours ago; that wasn’t taking into account the whole situation. Weiss hovered nearby, seemingly looking here and there but otherwise remaining silent.
She scoffed in good humor at Nier’s reply, ducking her head a little as she did. Only when she’d reigned in the small grin on her face did she glance up again.
“I’m hoping it won’t come to that,” she said finally.
Eventually she asked Nier about his job and it hadn’t taken him long to answer her. She nodded, mulling over that new bit of information. Weiss was mentioning something about meddling in other people’s lives and the look Nier shot the book was enough to draw another small smile from Reks. It went mostly unnoticed.
“Sounds like you keep busy,” Reks noted.
The conversation had been cut short when Reks’s order had arrived. She spared enough time to thank both the guy who’d brought her food over and Nier for paying before she began to eat. In a way it was a little embarrassing to be the only one eating but she reasoned it was fine, Weiss wouldn’t need to eat anyways and Nier seemed content in talking to Weiss during that time.
----[x]---- Cerise had gone to bed leaving Hilary alone for some time. This wasn’t anything that he minded, he was typically alone in this house, when he had business to conduct with others he went to preordained meeting spots or to their homes. Very rarely did he ever see company here. As such he saw no need to head to bed just yet.
He took the time to tidy up his home a bit, making it easier to find things he might need later on. It was best this way; he’d known that since he was younger. There wasn’t much that needed doing but it at least gave him time to brood. He found many things on his mind but at the forefront were Rhona and Cerise each for varying reasons.
Eventually he too had wandered to bed, finally kicking his shoes off and draping his coat over the back of a chair. Once he was ready and changed out of his day clothes Hilary wasted no more time in laying down and sleeping. Whether or not he had any dreams that night he couldn’t say come morning.
When the morning sun had risen Hilary was already up, washing his face. He hadn’t heard anything through the night and so he assumed Cerise had slept through without trouble. If not then she had not come out of her room.
He went about his day as normal, letting her sleep. If she wasn’t up yet he didn’t need to rouse her, Cerise could use the rest anyways. Perhaps she’d be more informative today with her mind clearer.
’Perhaps things might turn around in more ways than one,’ he mused. It lacked much confidence behind it however. | |

| Nier relaxed a little more when she smiled. She had a lot to adjust to be at least it seemed like she was managing that much. He found relief in that, hoping the days would continue on like that. He'd rather see her well, after all.
"You and me both," he replied, his tone light, "I'm not much of doctor after all. It's a wonder I manage to patch myself up at times."
Nier waved Weiss's words off, snappy as they were. Nier was doing what he could to help people. If they needed it and wanted it, he'd gladly spare the help. Some couldn't get out, after all.
"I've done what I could for others," he argued, "whether they end happy or not.""Yes and some have not been so cheerful," He couldn't exactly argue with that but he left it be. He paid for the food that arrived and allowed her to eat. No doubt she needed it. A little rest would do her some good afterward.
"We're doing what we can," he continued after a moment, "and if I manage to save one life, that's fine by me."
Whether he was referring to Reks condition or not, he didn't say. Perhaps she might think that. It was her and many others that he'd helped in the past. He was glad to be able to aid them, proud even. He found nothing wrong with putting his nose in the business of others.---- [x] ---- Cerise slept well that night. The occasional dream shook her awake but she managed to get right back to bed afterward. She was far too tired to worry about any bad memories she might have.
She woke once when the sun hit her eyes. Rolling over, she tugged a pillow over her head and tried to drift back to sleep. At one point she heard Hilary's footsteps pass her door. He didn't move to wake her. In some manner, she appreciated that.
Cerise remained that way for a long enough time. She dozed on and off, comfortable where she was. The bed beat the ship ten fold.
Eventually, she pushed herself up. Brushing her bangs from her face, she got to her feet and wandered to the door. There was no point in laying in bed all day.
She rubbed the sleep out of her eyes as she made her way down the hall and down the stairs. She could hear Hilary somewhere. Following the sounds, she found him in that front room they'd been in the other day.
"Morning?" she greeted, "or is it the afternoon?"
Cerise honestly wasn't sure. She had no clock to tell her the time now. She could only assume at this rate. | |

| As she ate Nier and Weiss spoke, mostly about Nier’s supposed meddling into the lives of others. Reks said nothing on the matter and instead focused on eating so as not to keep them waiting long. If nothing else she felt like she was learning more about these two as they talked.
Reks glanced up from her plate when Nier mentioned saving people. She found she didn’t have much to say to that. What could she say?
The rest of her meal passed in silence. Her mind was still whirling with everything that had happened today and how she might find a way home. Reks hoped there was a way to go home. Her friends and family must know she was missing and if they didn’t they’d have to soon. She might not always have been the closest to all of them but she missed them already…
Shaking the thought away she finished up the little dish she’d ordered, pushing it to the side. Nier didn’t waste much time before he got up, waiting for her to follow suit before they left. It felt chillier outside after being in around people for so long but Reks didn’t pay it much mind. To be honest she was too tired to be worried about it.
The walk back to Nier’s house was in silence and Reks took the time to observe the place again. It was a quaint place, that was for sure, with chickens and pigs running about in the more open areas while children ran around barefooted by the fountain. At the very least these people seemed happy with what they had.
“I take it people just kind of wander indoors whenever, huh?” she wondered out loud once they reached Nier’s house.
----[x]---- The sun had risen by the time Cerise emerged from her room though it still hadn’t reached noontime yet. If it had then Hilary would have taken it upon himself to wake her; he didn’t have time to sit around and do nothing while he waited for her to wake all day, after all. While things were quiet Hilary had no idea how long that would last.
He glanced up when Cerise’s voice reached him, spotting her looking bleary-eyed but otherwise awake. He spared a brief smile and a nod in greeting before he said anything in return.
“It’s still morning, if it had neared noon I would have woken you,” he informed her. He wasted no time in rising to his feet and gesturing to the nearby kitchen. “You might want to eat something before we head out. I have a few documents that need dropped off early today.”
Hilary would follow Cerise into the kitchen where he was once again reminded that he needed to do a bit of shopping soon. He’d already eaten, never having been one who wanted to eat a lot in the mornings. Come lunch and dinnertime his appetite would be larger however to compensate.
“You will grow acquainted with some of Havana today as well,” Hilary said.
She had started to root around for something to eat. He was out of many basic foods but surely she’d be able to find something to fill her belly for the time being. He’d be able to get something or other later or maybe anyone who was with her would be able to. | |

| Reks didn't comment on the conversation though perhaps that was for the best. Some things she just didn't need to know about. In time, she might learn more of what he did around the area.
When she was finished, they started their walk back. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught Reks looking about again. She was taking things in a little at a time.
Taking the path home was a simple task. She was at least observant of that. Heaven forbid there be an actual emergency with Yonah. Reks would have to know her way around if worse came to worse.
"That's just about it," he replied to her question, "People turn in whenever they want. Drink whenever they want as well. There isn't much of a 'time of day' for anything. We just do as we please at any time."
That might have been strange for her. With no night, the people had accommodated to what they could. It really wasn't so strange for them but for her, where she had a 'moon' and 'stars' in a dark sky, it could be.
"Don't worry about it too much," he continued as he opened his front door for her, "If you get tired, sleep. No one will disturb you."
These were just things that she would adjust to in time. At least, Nier hoped that was the case. It wouldn't be easy, he was sure. By the sounds of it, Reks had left a lot behind. He wasn't sure his home would ever compare to the one she'd lost. ---- [x] ---- Cerise spared a small smile in return. Honestly, waking up to a friendly face was somewhat of great thing. She'd seen worse at this point and had hated it. At least Hilary seemed the cheerful sort at times.
"Alright," she answered. She wouldn't ask about these documents. For all she knew, they held some kind of importance.
He followed after him into the kitchen where she was free to route around for something to eat. There wasn't much. Cerise figured he might not be accustom to guests. She finally settled on a bit of bread and an apple to tide her over.
"I can't say I mind that," she replied, "It feels like I haven't had a walk in a long time."
The first day she woke up here didn't really count. She didn't take in sights, flew passed them in a panic. After that, it was just the ship.
"Is Havana big?" she inquired after taking a bite out of her apple, "What's it like here?" | |

| As they went inside Nier answered her, telling her that everyone went about their day at their own pace. She supposed that made sense when there was no night time to make people duck in at the same time. That might have been to their advantage with such monstrous things like shades running around.
Reks shook the thought away.
“I think I might take you up on that idea,” Reks said, ignoring the throb in her arm for the time being. If she managed some sleep she’d at least be able to ignore it for a little while. “Do you have an extra blanket and pillow I can use?”
Now that she had a meal in her belly she was fully aware of just how tired she really was. Her legs didn’t ache nearly as much as when she’d finally stopped running but they’d be sore later and the injury never really stopped hurting. The pain merely dulled in small increments so long as she didn’t jostle her arm around too much.
Her bare feet padded along the floor as she yet again glanced around. The front room wasn’t big nor did it seem to open up into any other rooms other than the staircase Yonah had appeared from earlier. In one corner was a bed while in a farther corner from that an old-timey oven stood. Shelves lined a wall or two and the little wooden table they’d sat at earlier stood on its own nearer to the edge of the room.
Turning to Weiss as Nier rooted around for what he had, Reks inquired, “So, what, do you just tag along with Nier all the time?”
----[x]---- While Cerise had rooted around what little was left Hilary left her to it, leaning against the doorjamb. It didn’t surprise him that she’d be eager to stretch her legs a little. Trips out at sea were not short affairs after all and with cramped conditions to boot she would have had a rough time of things, putting it all lightly.
“In that case it will all work out for the best then,” he noted simply.
When she asked more about Havana Hilary gestured for her to eat. The least time spent wasting it here the better. Normally he would have been out the door by now if it hadn’t been for Cerise. Perhaps if she proved trustworthy and capable he might not have to worry about it in time; that was assuming that she had anything to give to the Templar cause anyways.
“It is a large city and bustles with all sorts,” Hilary told her. The statement wasn’t very informative but it answered her questions for the time being. “You’ll see for yourself during the day.”
He waited then for her to finish but tried not to rush her. Impatience was part of his personality when he was ready to get the day going or when a plan of his was being held up in any manner. It didn’t matter how large or small the hold up was but it left him on pins and needles until he could start. This time was no different.
Hilary managed to restrain himself from pacing across the kitchen at least. In that regard it was something of a little victory. | |

| Rek's appeared thoughtful for a moment. Nier let her think things through at her own pace. It was the least he could do. All of this was going to take time. He didn't want to rush anything.
Inside, he spared her a nod in response. "I'll find something now," he replied, "It shouldn't take me long."
He left her to her own devices aware that Weiss was lingering nearby. The book hadn't much to say throughout the day. He might have been holding back to avoid arguments. At least, that's what Nier liked to think."I do not 'tag along'," Weiss responded in his usual snappish tone, "Nier needed my aid in saving his daughter. We are attempting to discover a cure for her illness." The word 'attempting' hurt a little. They were doing all they could. Time wouldn't be on their side if things got worse. Nier tried to shake the dark thoughts from his mind in favor of grabbing Reks a pillow and blanket.
Making his way back, he nodded toward her. "I'll show you where you can sleep," he said, motioning for her to follow. It wouldn't take him long to lead her off into another room. While it was bare, it at least had a bed.
"You'll have to forgive what little is in here," he noted, "I haven't had guests in a long time."
Regardless of that, Reks did not complain. She looked too tired to really attempt that anyways. Only when she was sure that she was comfortable would he leave her to sleep.---- [x] ---- Cerise listened to what little Hilary had to explain about Havana. No doubt she would be witnessing it first hand. Rattling on about it now seemed pointless. The information was enough. As long as she wasn't being knocked out again, she couldn't find reason to complain.
"Sounds like a place to be," she finally replied.
Cerise was a little grateful for that. If it was a larger place, the chances of something happening again wouldn't be so high. The island she had been on was small. It was no wonder no one was out to help the strange girl.
She spared a glance at the odd marking again as she ate. It was dark against her skin. Once more she wondered what it meant. She tried not to think about it, favoring finishing the apple and starting on the bit of bread.
She finished shortly after. Hilary was quick to start them off then, perhaps a little impatient. If he was, he didn't make mention. He had to schedule things around her a little and that obviously cut into routine.
Outside, the air was warm but fresh. Cerise found no reason to complain about the heat. Not after being stuffed in the ship for so long. She left her hoodie back in Hilary's home, finding no need to keep it on now.
"Where to, then?" she asked, following after. His stride was longer than hers. The first few times, she struggled to keep up. Hilary really did seem to want to get moving quickly. | |

| It wasn’t so surprising that Weiss was a little snappish when he answered her, perhaps offended on some level. In a way it sounded like he thought he was more of the leader than the follower between the two though Reks had no way of knowing if that was true or not. She shook that thought away.
“Sounds like tagging along to me,” Reks pointed out. “Either way, good luck in that endeavor.”
Her attention turned back to Nier as he returned from one of the other ends of the small room. The blanket and pillow he handed her were worn though by how much Reks couldn’t be sure yet, she didn’t have the time to inspect either before Nier lead her to a small door off to the side. It was hidden to the side of one of the shelves. While the front room was stuffed full this little room was rather bare with only a little bed inside. Nier was quick to apologize for the lack of furnishing.
Shaking her head Reks said, “Don’t worry about it. I would have settled for sleeping on the floor.”
She missed whatever Nier’s response was. Instead she’d gone to crawl into the offered bed ignoring how thin the mattress was. It was most likely fairly old though it was better than having nothing at all, that was for sure. The blanket too was old and probably better off used as a sheet than a comforter though it wasn’t cold enough for Reks to be worried about that.
Settling in on her left side she tried to keep from jostling her wound as she’d done so. It was a bit of work but she managed it, cuddling into the blanket and pillow soon after. Many thoughts flooded her mind in the time it took her to fall asleep though she did her best not to dwell on many of them.
----[x]---- Thankfully Cerise finished her breakfast quickly and wasted little time after he answered her. Hilary hadn’t seen a need to keep the conversation going now, most days he was so busy that he had little time for such things anyways. It would be strange to have to do something of the sort so early in the mornings. Already Cerise seemed like the talkative type at this time.
The air felt cooler now than it had been the day before but it would quickly grow hotter as the sun rose. Hilary took silent relief in this slightly cooler morning air while it lasted. He was already heading down the porch steps and down the pathway before Cerise spoke again.
“To an acquaintance’s,” he answered simply. The name would not matter much to her in the long run, that much he was sure of. This man was merely one that Hilary used to pass on letters to the grand master with ease after all. “After that I need to make a few rounds about Havana.”
She didn’t need to know the why, in time she might find out after all. Until such a moment Cerise would be left in the dark about it. Hilary saw no need to rush things just yet.
“If it needs to be done then I will find an old friend to keep you company,” Hilary noted after a moment’s thought. If things started getting rambunctious or he needed to do something more for the Templars than that would be done. | |

| Time passed as it usually did for Nier. When Rek's was settled in he started tending to work that he left unfinished. Until Reks knew her way around, he wouldn't stray far from the village. Yonah was delighted by that fact.
Business went about as it usually did. On occasion, Nier was stopped to be asked about Reks. No doubt people were curious of her. She stuck to herself when she wandered and Nier couldn't blame her for that much.
When he returned to the village square, he received pay for the jobs he'd done. That money would be used later on. It was only after did he start back home.
Reks was still asleep when he arrived. He made a point to keep quiet as to not disturb her or his daughter. Despite this, Weiss began to speak, his tone hushed, "Do you really think it's wise to leave a stranger in your home with your daughter? It all seems fool hearted to me."Nier waved the old book off, leaning back in his chair. "Reks seems harmless," he argued, "and I admit Yonah needs someone to call friend. So I'm hoping this will work out for the best.""Yes, well, 'seems' harmless is very different from actually harmless. It's not as if you know her well. But I suppose I won't be changing your mind anytime soon."If anything, Nier couldn't argue that. There was something about Reks he liked. He was putting his trust in her. He held some amount of faith that she wouldn't abuse it.---- [x] ---- Cerise enjoyed the fresh air. Even a light breeze was a comfort, carrying a salty scent. It would take some time to get used to it but she knew she had much to adjust to. Time was the only thing she really had for the moment.
Hilary's answer was a quick one and didn't hold much detail. Cerise didn't question it any further than that. It wasn't as if it was her business. She merely liked to know a little of where they'd be headed.
"You sound as if you're a rather important man," she commented after he made mention of 'making rounds. She very well knew that was a term used mostly for those who had something important to do or protect.
Cerise placed her hand over the mark when she caught it out of the corner of her eye again. She resisted a sigh. It would take a long while to get used to that too.
Her attention pulled from it in favor of his words. He'd leave her with someone he knew? Cerise was extending some amount of trust in him but someone else? Perhaps it was merely best to remain a little wary.
"How long would you be out and about if that's the case?" she inquired.
Cerise was full of questions. Until she settled into a routine, she'd would continued to ask. She hoped Hilary wouldn't get annoyed by them. In some regard, she was curious. In another, it was a distraction from her thoughts. Home was far from her now and as much as she didn't accept it, it left a deep pang of sadness running through her. | |

| Reks had no idea how long she managed to sleep though she was aware that she did wake herself up on numerous occasions. Rolling over to the side she was most comfortable on was inevitable and ended up jarring her wound badly. Once she was rested she checked the bandage through the torn sleeve, noting that blood had stained the bandages already. She heaved a sigh at that; at this rate it’d never heal quickly, she was sure of it.
’I wonder what time it is,’ she thought if only to stop from dwelling on other things. She wasn’t quite ready to fully come to terms with the reality of what might have happened to bring her here.
She could hear hushed voices in the other room though Reks couldn’t begin to make out what was being said or by whom. Before she wandered out there to find something to do Reks took the time to run her fingers through her hair, trying to tame it. She at least wanted to look presentable to some degree even if her clothes were torn, dirty and rumpled and her hair might need washing soon. Once that was done she headed out of the small room she was offered to see Nier and Weiss speaking in hushed tones.
There was a quiet moment that followed where both book and man glanced at her. Feeling uncomfortable under their combined stare, Reks shuffled her feet about. Finally she said, “I’m not interrupting anything am I?”
Feeling something like a child Reks took to toying with her sleeves while she waited for an answer. She wasn’t comfortable with this place yet nor how things worked here and it would take some time until she was. Because of this she felt like she was in the way even if she might not be.
----[x]---- Cerise seemed to have been listening while he spoke, however simple his answer was. He caught her glancing here and there as he lead them down the wide pathway as they walked. This would be beneficial; if she could learn the layout f Havana quickly he’d have less to worry about in the future if she was important in some way.
He gestured her way when she answered and said, “Perhaps I am.”
The answer was most likely unsatisfactory to her but it was all Hilary was willing to give. He would not be bringing up the Templars for some time unless instructed otherwise. For all Hilary knew she might very well have some ties to the assassins that needed inspecting and severed first.
From the corner of his eye Hilary spotted her fussing with her marking again though he didn’t comment on this or act as if he noticed. Instead he kept on heading down the path to his acquaintance’s. Cerise was keeping up with his pace for the time being despite his stride being longer and quicker.
“Hmm?” He glanced at her, taking a moment to think over the answer. “Several hours at most. If it comes to that whoever will be watching you will do so in public places.”
The reassurance had come only after Hilary had noticed her worried look. She seemed to be the type who wasn’t adept at hiding what she felt and in this situation that would be advantageous for Hilary. Cerise didn’t seem to want to mention any of her worries just yet but then it hadn’t even been a full day that they’d known each other either. | |

| Nier had hushed the conversation after that. Weiss would ride the subject as much as he could to prove a point. Nier was more than used to that fact by this point. It didn't bother him too much.
He lifted his head when he heard Reks voice. She stood there, looking awkward and rather unsure of things. Nier cleared his throat, shaking his head.
"Nothing at all," Nier answered, "Weiss was just complaining.""Bah! I do not complain! I was just pointing out your lack of using your head!"Nier snorted, shooting a quick look at the book. Weiss didn't seem to appreciate it, quickly retaliating with several complaints. Nier sighed in turn.
"You'll wake Yonah," Nier finally replied, "Anyways, how did you sleep Reks. Feeling any better?"
Nier could only assume how her wound was. If it was more painful, she hadn't mentioned it yet. He hoped that wasn't the case. If he needed to fetch a doctor he would but he knew that the both of them would rather avoid resorting to that much.---- [x] ---- Havana seemed to be a lively place even so early in the morning. Maybe it was the difference in era. People got up earlier and started their days. Hilary seemed to do much of the same.
His answer was much like the other ones. It was almost as if he was making these things into riddles. Cerise didn't try to understand or unravel them. In time, maybe he'd become clearer.
"You certainly act like you are," she observed, her tone a little light.
She could honestly see it a little though perhaps it was the way he was raised. She couldn't quite say. What kind of person was he to hold himself so well and yet do so much with destructive explosives?
When he finally did speak up about how long it would take him, she nodded briefly. A few hours might seem like a long time for Cerise. She could only follow after this 'friend' of his through that time.
She didn't focus on that for long. Hilary had continued, as if easily catching onto her worries. Maybe he did. Cerise wasn't exactly good at hiding how she felt.
"I-I'm not worried!" she protested, "I'm not, I swear." | |

| From what Nier said nothing of much importance had been happening though Weiss was clearly indignant about the claim that he’d been complaining. Reks shook her head at that. Weiss clearly was a prideful person, of sorts. If nothing else it made them an interesting duo.
“I see,” she answered though it seemed to go unnoticed. Nier had taken to scolding Weiss for getting too loud.
Reks wondered how noises carried in this small, stone house of his and if Yonah had even heard Weiss or not from down here. She wouldn’t be surprised with how tiny the house actually was. The fact that it even had three rooms was a shock in and of itself, from the outside it looked more like it would have just been something like a one-room school.
She shook her head when asked about her sleep, or could it be classified as a nap? Though Nier had said time didn’t matter much here there had to be a way to keep track of it all. Surely they still had dates and the like, that sort of thing just didn’t go away.
“A little,” she admitted, reaching up to clasp the bandaged area lightly, “I think my bandages need changed already though…”
It probably wouldn’t surprise him that she’d rolled over on it several times in her sleep, waking herself up with a jolt when it happened. Because of that Reks saw no need to mention it out loud; it would be easy enough to deduce she thought. Maybe while they reapplied bandages to it she could find out what all that babysitting Yonah would entail.
----[x]---- Hilary chuckled when she mentioned how he acted. There was no reason for her to know what exactly he did, that held true especially now. The thought was shaken away as soon as it had come; Hilary was growing increasingly aware of how often he was thinking about that as he did so. Recurring thoughts at least kept him busy and his mind off of other things however.
When he gave her an answer to how long things might take given any possible difficulties arising she was quick to snap back at him. Another little laugh escaped him. She was obvious and it seemed she was not proud about that fact.
“If you insist,” he told her, amusement lining his voice. From the way she took to pouting she was well ware of it.
The conversation was drawn to a halt when Hilary approached his acquaintance’s home. He gestured for Cerise to wait at the porch steps, she had no reason to hear any words exchanged. He did not want her piecing anything together unless it was necessary. Not yet anyways.
The exchange was a quick affair anyways even if it made Cerise impatient. A few greetings were given and Hilary fished out the letter to the grand master from his pocket with instructions for it to be delivered immediately. With that done there was nothing more to be said and Hilary joined Cerise yet again before leading her off once more.
“We’ll make a few rounds about Havana and hope nothing goes wrong,” he informed her. | |

| Nier was glad that she didn't hear that conversation. There was no point in her worrying about staying here. He put his trust in her and for the moment, that's the -best thing that he could offer.
Despite this, she still looked a bit awkward here. In time, he hoped that she would relax a bit more. He knew that it would take a long while to adjust.
"Don't mind what Weiss says. He's just proud," Nier taunted. "Proud and cautious are not the same thing!" he protested but mostly went ignored again.
Nier's attention turned mostly toward the answer Reks gave. He hummed briefly in response already getting to his feet. He fetched fresh bandages to re-wrap her arm. He worried about the rate of the bleeding now.
"Let me see your arm," Nier advised as he moved to sit down again."If the bleeding has not stopped perhaps it is best to consult a doctor," Weiss suggested, hovering nearby.
Nier glanced up at Reks wondering what she might say to that. She didn't want to trouble anyone anymore than she had. Would she protest a doctor as well?---- [x] ---- Hilary seemed amused by her words. She couldn't begin to wonder why. Maybe it was something that was important to him or how he acted. She could really only assume, barely knowing the man as it was.
When she denied her worry, he merely laughed at her again. His words were light when he spoke. A pout overtook her features afterward. If he could read her so easily, she worried a tad a little.
Hilary finally stopped at this acquaintance’s home. She remained on the porch, watching as people went by. There was something comforting about watching them, a sense of normality despite being stuck in another era.
Before she delved into anymore of those thoughts of her home and family, Hilary was beside her again. She glanced up at him easily following after. His words left her curious.
"What could go wrong?" she inquired, glancing up at him, "It seems like a pretty quiet place, honestly."
Cerise didn't know what to expect in this era so perhaps that made her naive. She was learning through observation but she hadn't seen much yet. For the time being, Cerise could only rely on Hilary. In some sense, she felt too weak knowing that. | |

| Reks glanced at Weiss as he snapped in response. ’Cautious about what?’ Despite the curiosity on the matter Reks didn’t have to think hard about it; most likely it as about her. She was still amazed that she was being left to babysit Yonah when they were all still just strangers. Even Reks had to wonder about Nier with that decision he’d made.
Reks didn’t get a chance to comment about it when the topic turned to her wellbeing. Nier was already fetching bandages and moving towards the only table in the room; Reks followed his lead, gingerly tugging her arm from the jacket sleeve.
“I think it’s just because I rolled on it in my sleep,” Reks defended, not quite ready to have someone run down a doctor for her. Unless it got infected then she’d bite the bullet. “It’s fine.”
She didn’t miss the way Nier glanced at her when she answered. In all honesty Reks was just glad that the wound wouldn’t need cleaning again just yet; that could wait a few more hours at least. Still, it felt like it was on fire again and glancing at the injury proved that it was deep. Yet again she was well aware of just how scarred it would end up when it finally healed.
Before Reks could say anything else Yonah’s voice reached them from the staircase again. This time the young girl didn’t hold anything though she looked just as curious as before.”Hey, Dad? Do we have anything sweet to eat?” Yonah wondered, her gaze straying towards Reks’s arm. Reks caught the way Yonah’s nose scrunched up and she glanced away quickly from it.
----[x]---- There was note of curiosity in Cerise’s voice when she wondered what might go wrong on his rounds. Despite himself Hilary shook his head recalling all of the times many a shoot out had happened between his men and the assassins. Then again this morning was still quiet, many people still inside or having ducked into their places of work.
“The day is still young, just wait until early afternoon when the hustle and bustle is at its busiest,” Hilary told her. “Many things may happen within Havana—good or bad.”
Glancing at her it seemed that Cerise wasn’t so sure about that. Granted she had arrived closer towards the time when many might be winding down for the day. Any glimpses of Havana she’d had on the way to his home had been brief yesterday and no trouble had been seen along the way. In time she would learn of it all.
“In truth many hours into the night can be host to many activities,” he mulled out loud. Taverns stayed open late anymore and many people came and went from them or milled about friends porches and the like.
If Cerise was worried she needn’t be, everything that happened in Havana were things that Hilary were able to handle. There was no way of her knowing that however and he was well aware of that tidbit. In a way he would keep it like that. He might have held himself proudly but a bit of surprise later might be good for her. | |

| Nier found relief in the fact that she couldn't question anything any further. He didn't want to offend her by the conversation beforehand. Nier was aware that Weiss had a point. For now, he'd leave it at that.
Gingerly, he took hold of the injured arm. Indeed, it was still in bad shape and would be for some time. The wound would leave behind a nasty scar to boot."You certainly are confident about that," Weiss pointed out, "I wouldn't suppose you know much of what someone in the medical profession would."Nier shook his head. He was no doctor but he wasn't going to stress Reks seeing one. As long as she felt fine, there was no need. Infection hadn't settled in and she wasn't ill.
Carefully, he started to peel the old bandages off. It was at this point did another voice ring out. He glanced up at Yonah who was already quickly looking away. Nier couldn't blame her for that.
"Something sweet?" he echoed the words, his gaze barely lifting from his work, "There may be something. You might have to poke about. I've got my hands full for the moment."
He wouldn't be handling anything until his hands were washed of the blood. Yonah knew that much very well, having seen it before. She couldn't stomach things like this and for that, Nier was thankful.---- [x] ---- She blinked up at him as he spoke. Cerise had no reason not to believe those words. He knew Havana more than she did. For the moment, she was completely foreign to everything here.
While it seemed quiet here, from the sounds of it now, the city held it's own share of secrets. Cerise could only wait to see that much, taking his word for it. Who knew what might happen when she wasn't expecting it.
"I wouldn't have imagined it getting so bad," she stated in return, "but then again, I'm used to the quiet life."
Living in a small town where crime and ruckus was little, Cerise was accustom to that life. Having been pulled into another, she was aware she needed to adjust to the times, whatever they were that was.
"So what sort of things could go wrong?" she inquired after. She spared a glance around, noting the few people out and about. It just seemed strange that something could happen here.
Hilary had stressed that it could however. In some regard, she would put faith in those words. She wasn't exactly sure what she would did if something did go astray. Cerise didn't exactly know much in the ways of combat. | |

| Weiss sounded dubious about her assessment and Reks could only shake her head in answer. She wasn’t a medical professional, that much was obvious but she liked to think that she knew her body well enough to know what she could handle. At the very least no one was forcing the idea of finding a doctor yet.
Yonah’s arrival from upstairs halted any further conversation about the injury while she waited patiently for Nier to say something. He barely spared a glance up before he’d started back on Reks’s bandages though he wasn’t ignoring his daughter by any means. Reks listened silently, seeing no need to interrupt the two. Weiss seemed to share the sentiment.
Yonah bobbed her head in answer, trotting over to where they must have kept some food. Nier blocked most of her view and so Reks couldn’t see if Yonah found whatever she was craving.
For a long moment it was quiet. Weiss hovered nearby, as he always seemed to, twisting too and fro, presumably to better look at whatever had his attention at the time. Reks could hear Yonah shuffling things about on the other side of the room as the task of re-bandaging Reks’s injury continued. Nier seemed to be taking his time to make sure the blood-soaked clothe wasn’t stuck to the wound.”Do we have any stuff to make cookies? Popola taught me how to make some awhile ago!” Yonah wondered as the shuffling sound ended. Reks could only assume that she’d found something to eat when at the sound of soft wooden ‘thunk’ of a blade on a cutting board was heard.
Reks glanced at Nier when he didn’t answer right away, catching the look that crossed his face. She had to bite her lip to keep from laughing at that.
----[x]---- Hilary’s suspicions about Cerise not knowing city life were confirmed when next she spoke. He could only shake his head at that. Naivety would be her downfall at this point if she did not wizen up about Havana soon. There would need to be some precautions taken until such a time occurred.
“You might be surprised. There are all sorts that gather in Havana,” Hilary told her. It was a simple answer but there was too much to explain in great detail and much of it could be rather subtle. If one didn’t know what to look for one could miss it all entirely unless it happened to someone first hand.
For a second Hilary mulled that over. An example or a reminder might not hurt; at the least it would keep her more cautious. Hilary couldn’t say how adept she was at spotting a threat or even to defend herself against any such things.
“Let us not forget what you endured before we met,” he reminded finally. He felt a twinge of something in his gut at the look that crossed her face at that though Hilary managed to shove the feeling aside. He continued on to say, “But enough about such things for the time being, perhaps we might be able to make a stop and find you more suitable clothing.”
This would at least help her keep her mind on something else and draw focus away from her. Perhaps hiding her tattoo would help matters as well.

| Yonah remained preoccupied with finding whatever it was she wanted. Nier wasn't sure what he had stashed away. There could be a number of things, honestly. He felt Yonah would be better prepared this way when he was gone.
Instead, he tended to the wound. He made sure to block Yonah's view of the bloodied and mangled arm. The young girl couldn't stomach that kind of sight.
In the silence, he started to re-wrap her arm as if this took great concentration. The only noise that distracted him was that of Yonah moving about.
It wasn't until his daughter spoke up did he stop completely. A look crossed his expression, one that Reks must have caught. She looked to be struggling not to laugh.
"I think there's some in the lower cupboard," he informed, keeping his tone light, "Popola's been teaching you quite a bit. But I'd rather you stick inside, you know."
While she wasn't the best cook, he knew that Popola was doing what she could to guide the girl, give her something to do. Still, the way his daughter cooked, Nier didn't expected too much improvement in that field.
Nier tried not to focus on that now in favor of wrapping up Reks' arm. When he was sure the bandages were secure, he pulled away.
"That should do you some good for a while longer," he stated simply, pushing himself up from his seat so he might wash his hands.---- [x] ---- If she had to guess by the shake of his head, Hilary wasn't too impressed by her words. Why would he be? She was a small town young woman who wasted her time trying to keep herself entertained and her mind steady. Her home hadn't been much but it was still home.
She didn't know what she expected from what little conversation there was but it certainly wasn't those next few words. All at once, her chest felt tight, stirring with emotion that she would have rather forgotten about. She shot the man a look.
"That's a low fucking blow," she snapped in return.
With that said, she fell into silence, ruffling her hair as if that would shake the thoughts away. She got it, being careful was a given here. She knew she had to be now.
Still, she didn't appreciate the comment. It was like rubbing salt into a fresh wound. He got his point across, that's all that mattered. Now she just wanted to bury that bad experience.
Hilary was already suggesting putting that aside. Cerise couldn't agree to that more though she didn't vocalize it. If he hadn't gotten the hint by now, she wouldn't anytime soon.
"That's fine," she muttered, her tone flat, "if it helps."
She knew it would. In a bit of a prideful manner, she just didn't want to comply easily. She could be difficult, easily, when someone pushed her buttons the right way. | |

| If Yonah had noticed her father’s pause she didn’t react to it. Instead Reks could hear things being moved around again for a short time before Nier did speak. While he did this he seemed to be taking his time in bandaging Reks back up, probably worried about getting the bandage too tight or something. If that was the case then Reks was grateful, it already stung and throbbed as it was.
”It was when Popola and Devola came to see me,” Yonah pointed out. As if it were an afterthought she added, “Promise!”That was about the time when Nier finished, moving to trash the used strips; Reks took the time to tug her jacket back on again. If Nier heard her thanks he didn’t respond to it. While this was being done Yona took it upon herself to come sit at the table with Reks, smiling up at Weiss before placing a plate of watermelon slices before her.
“Popola a friend of yours?” Reks wondered, glancing towards Nier.
It was Yonah who answered. “Yeah, she takes care of the library here and bring me books to read when Dad’s gone. Sometimes Devola comes too.” She paused then to push the plate towards the center of the table, silently offering some to Reks. ”Maybe they’ll come over again soon.””I don’t see why not,” Reks replied, reaching for one of the proffered watermelon slices.
----[x]---- Cerise’s reaction to his reminder didn’t go unnoticed. From the corner of his eye Hilary could see the way she stiffened, nearly stopping in her steps. Hilary did not stop to let her catch up if she fell behind or to glance at her. He didn’t have to as a few seconds later she was snapping at him and he could feel the glare burning holes in the side of his head.
He merely waved a dismissive hand. The fact that she’d asked about what dangers might be here had been enough to convince him that Cerise had been more willing to forget than to learn. If it meant getting her angry with him for a time to make sure she was cautious then so be it.
“I believe it will keep attention from you, yes,” Hilary said simply, unruffled by how she’d begun to sour.
Perhaps Cerise was even unhappier when he didn’t not snap back or seem deterred in anyway. Hilary wasn’t one who would be stopped by such things. It wasn’t as if Cerise was close to him anyways and so it wasn’t particularly hurtful when she snubbed him.
If Cerise’s sulking would continue on through the day or not Hilary would find out. If nothing else he’d know what to expect now when her moods were low. With some experience under his belt Hilary would better learn how to avoid them altogether at some point.
“Come now, such a sour look does not suit you,” Hilary noted, if only to break the silence as they walked. | |
