Matilda sighed, leaning forward to rest her elbows on her knees, hands clasped. It had happened again that morning, having to stop and lean against the wall to avoid crashing into anything as it did. What was it with those strange visions about some Native American kid? For the past several years she'd had them and no one had been able to tell her why, even medications had done little to make them go away.

With a groan she buried her head in her hands, the ache in her temples throbbing in time with her heartbeat. Hopefully Lalia would be home soon, it was about that time in the day, and she'd be able to talk about something and take her mind off of the visions. Her headache made it impossible to try to do the same with video games, making her sick to her stomach when she tried.

'I'm just nuts, that's it,' she decided, maybe a little bitterly.

Minutes passed like this, the sun slowly making its path through the sky above. Clouds helped to cool things off but only briefly. Matilda had taken to sitting on the pouch in the shade, enjoying the occasional cool breeze. Soon enough Lalia would be arriving from work, the evening drawing closer and closer. Matilda wasn't too bothered by this, her parents out enjoying a distant relative's birthday party. Matilda hadn't been particularly close to the relative in question to want to go.

Glancing up and catching sight of the older woman, Matilda raised her hand and waved to her, calling out as she did so. "Lalia! How was work?"

Lalia heaved a heavy sigh, brushing her bangs out of her face. In her arms were a couple of books and bird feed. Work had been hectic as it normally was during the summer. It rarely slowed down, leaving her a little drained of dealing with people.

'Wonder what Matilda's been up to,' she thought, sparing a quick glance around. She dodged around a couple that seemed oblivious that the side walk was for anyone to use.

The sun was setting by the time she caught sight of the apartment complex she lived in. She lifted her head, hearing Matilda call out to her.

"Something wrong?" Lalia asked first. Matilda normally didn't wait so long for her. If she needed something, she normally came to the door first. "It was a long day. Really busy but that's the season."

She tipped her head a little, studying Matilda. The younger girl looked exhausted. This wasn't something new in all the years Lalia had known her.

"You didn't get sleep again?" she guessed, a hint of concern in her voice. "The same dream again?"

Lalia hadn't wasted much time before approaching Matilda and asking if anything was wrong. Matilda shook her head though said nothing, instead listening as Lalia mentioned how busy it had been again. This wasn't a surprise, with school out the kids often went around to the library where it was cooler indoors, at least some of them did.

Before she could say much Lalia had beat her to the punch. Matilda must have looked worse than she felt if it was that easy to tell. There was a pause as she leaned back, wondering how to explain it this time. It wasn't anything new except for the when...

"I wasn't asleep this time when I had it," Matilda admitted finally. If she was entirely honest in the last six months this had begun to get progressively more common. "The kid was heading somewhere still."

Glancing up at Lalia it wasn't hard to see the concern on her face. Matilda tried not to be bothered by this but like always it felt like she was putting Lalia out by mentioning it. It wasn't a secret that the older woman often put others ahead of herself, at least those she knew anyways. Matilda had always been one of those people ever since Lalia had started babysitting her when she was younger and her family had first moved here.

"The meds don‘t do anything to stop them,” Matilda said reluctantly, well aware of what question would be coming next. In fact she‘d long since stopped taking them because of that.

Matilda was a little hesitant when she spoke. Instead, she waited on Lalia to finish before she said what was on her mind. What she had to share worried Lalia.

Her eyebrows knitted together in confusion. She was seeing the boy out of her dreams now? Was that even possible? Lalia believed in a great many things but she'd never heard of something like that before.

"Has this happened before?" she inquired further. "I think this is the first time you've mentioned it to me..."

What was more, where was the kid trying to lead her? The dream had always been the same in the past. He was trying to take her somewhere but neither Lalia or Matilda knew where. Lalia had even dug into Native American myths and legends in hopes to find an answer. She had come up fruitless in the attempt.

Lalia placed a hand on her hip, leaning her weight on her left leg. "Don't take those things anymore," she said, "they're not helping and they can't be good for you if you're still taking them when nothings wrong in here." As she said this, she pointed at her head.

Honestly, Lalia had known Matilda since she was young. Babysitting her through the years, Lalia had never really seen anything wrong with her. She was a little distant but most kids growing up in this era were.

"Unless you've already stopped?" she asked then, shaking her head. "There's never been anything wrong with you. Your parents shouldn't have put you on those things anyway."

She sighed through her nose, trying not to let it bother her so much. Lalia didn't have a great opinion of Matilda's mother.

"I wish I knew what this Native American kid was trying to tell you..." she mused, shifting her weight a little as she stood. A few people passed them by but Lalia thought nothing of it.

Matilda leaned back further, resting her back on the wall. It didn‘t help much, she still felt a little hot and queasy. Maybe talking to Lalia now wasn‘t a good idea, her head throbbing particularly badly. She took to pressing the palm of her hand over her forehead, attempting to dull the pain. The Excedrin had yet to kick in.

“Nope,” Matilda lied, a simple thing really. She‘d long since gotten used to bluffing over the years, hiding what she could in fear of being bullied or thought she was insane.

She waited then, just watching Lalia. The older woman looked troubled, like she always did when this topic came up. It wasn‘t like they had any kind of answer as to why this had happened and was still going on. It wasn‘t like the dreams themselves were harmful but it was Matilda‘s need to figure them out that left her feeling ragged. She‘d heard of recurring dreams but these weren‘t always the same one, many times the boy in these visions was just going about his day and just as often he seemed as troubled as Matilda was.

A shrug was her answer to the medication topic. This too was a common occurrence as much as Matilda hated to admit it. “Stopped takin‘ ‘em months ago.”

Matilda merely gave another shrug when Lalia wished she knew what this was all about. Wishing was going to do them much good, much like the pills hadn‘t done a thing to help Matilda. In fact they‘d only served to make her go through the side effects for nothing.

She was glad that there wasn‘t anyone home with her tonight for a long while. At the very least she‘d be able to rest in silence, unless one of the other apartment‘s residents started causing a ruckus. For the most part everyone was left to their own devices in this complex though.

“Well, you should probably get something to eat,” Matilda noted. Before Lalia could say anything more Matilda had reached over, grabbing a bundle of magazines, envelopes and a rather large package and clumsily placing them on her lap. She felt rather weak all over with this headache. “I just came out here to get the mail and kinda... sat here...”

Lalia frowned, a little uncertain of what to say to Matilda. The young woman was having troubles, more so than anyone really deserved. At her age, it was more than just a little difficult. Lalia couldn't imagine what it would be like.

If anything, she knew now that Matilda had stopped taking those meds. They never helped in the past aside from some of them making her sleep. Even then, it was a minimal help.

"Good," was all she managed to say.

Matilda didn't have much to say and instead told Lalia to get home and eat. She shook her head slightly, starting down the path into her home.

"Come over if you need anything," she informed, "you know you're always welcome."

With that said, Lalia headed up to the apartment. She fumbled with her keys, unlocking the door and pushing her way in. It was quiet and she was thankful for it.

She went about her normal routine, flipping the lights on and walking to her room. She needed some comfortable clothing. Something shifted, catching her attention. Before she could react to it, something covered her mouth and nose.

Lalia screamed and kicked but a firm arm kept her from being able to break away. She couldn't hold her breath any longer and was forced to breath in whatever was on the cloth covering her mouth. Darkness slowly overtook her vision just a few moments later.

Groggily Matilda nodded, glad that it was at least an option. All the same she was planning on just falling asleep as quickly as possible for the night and hope her sleep wouldn't be plagued by that kid again. It wasn't as if the dreams and visions were particularly frightening or disturbing but they did leave her feeling drained for some reason.

"I'll try to call later," Matilda called after Lalia though she'd already headed to her apartment.

Matilda followed soon after, pushing herself up on her feet and having to stop momentarily as a wave of dizziness washed over her. It really hadn't been the best idea to sit out in the heat for so long though there was nothing to do about it now but to get inside where it was cooler. At the very least she made it inside without much further incident.

Once inside the apartment her family called theirs, Matilda flopped down on the couch, tossing all put the package onto the table. The TV nearby shed some light in the living room, the curtains drawn closed for the time being. Carefully she peered at the box, her name printed as the one to be received though she had to wonder why Abstergo was sending her anything.

'No use wondering, I guess,' she thought with a sigh, reaching over for her father's pocket knife. He'd always left it on his table for all sorts of things. Opening packages was one of those things.

Tearing the box open she peered inside, unsure of what she was even looking at. It was buried in packing peanuts though it looked to be like some kind of a green colored rock, broken off from something more ornate and larger. Really, the thing looked like it should be in a museum not being sent to some teenage girl.

Nonetheless she picked it up carefully, ready to inspect it closer despite her headache. Curiosity made her want to know more as soon as possible, besides maybe there was a letter hidden in the packing peanuts somewhere to explain this nonsense. When she touched the thing a strange tingling raced up her fingers through to the rest of her body. Before she could even begin to wonder what was going on her vision blacked out and she knew nothing else for a long while.

.Weeks had passed since the incident in her apartment. Lalia was taken away, forced under some kind of experiments. From what she recalled, she had some gene in her, something that was important.

Whatever it was, she'd been exposed to some strange objects. What had happened changed her forever. She remembered passing out. Everything seemed normal for a week until she started having strange visions. Another few days had passed before she noticed her eyes were turning red.

She panicked and without her medicine, had trouble calming down. Even now, she could feel her heart beating irregularly. Her throat was tight, making it even harder to breath in the stuff van.

Due to these 'positive results', she was being transferred some place else. They didn't give her a lot of information. They never did, instead leaving her in the dark to assume what would happen.

Lalia folded her hands, trying to ignore how they shook. She wasn't sure how many hours had passed so far. She tried to even out her breath, to ignore the attack. It was hard to do when she constantly felt sick to her stomach.

Thinking about it in that regard, she hadn't had a single calm moment since the kidnapping. Her nerves were shot and she was exhausted. Whatever they wanted with her, she just prayed they'd be through quickly.

¸„.-•~¹°”ˆ˜¨ [ ❊ ] ¨˜ˆ”°¹~•-.„¸

Connor wandered the streets, glancing this way and that. He was still trying to get used to the people here. More than half the time, it looked like they were trying to get used to him as well. He rarely missed the looks shot in his direction or the concerned whispers.

The day would have been like most others. Training to become an assassin was Connor's first priority. He needed these skills so he might hunt down the man who aided in burning his home, resulting in his mothers death.

Something strange happened however. His eyebrows knitted together as a bright flash erupted in the city. Many people stopped to look. He heard a few men speculating it was an explosion of some kind, trying to calm their children or wives.

Connor spared this idle chatter little mind, picking up his pace so he might discover the source of the strange light. As he drew closer, he found more people moving away from it then toward it.

"There was a strange girl there," one man had proclaimed, "looked half out of her wits and just wandered off! I'd never seen anything like her!"

Curiosity tugged at Connor hearing that. He picked up his pace into a jog, hoping to catch up to this 'strange girl' the man had been talking about.

He finally found the area the light had come from. It took a little bit of asking to find out where the girl had went. There were very few willing to give him answers.

Eventually, he caught up to the girl. Her clothing was strange and she looked disoriented. She looked around so dazed and confused. Connor tipped his head, curious of this girl, who she was.

"Are you lost?" he asked carefully, a little hesitant. He didn't want to scare her off. "What is your name?"

Shaun tapped his finger along the steering wheel, waiting. From what they'd been told the transport van would be heading this way, some woman inside. If the intel was true then they were about to see a misfortune's child for the first time in centuries.

They'd been waiting for a long while now for sighting of this van, putting aside getting to a safe place to set up Rebecca's Animus for Desmond. Right now this was just as important as finding whatever else Abstergo was after. A misfortune's child could help them get the tables turned on the Templars, assuming they could get her away from them.

"How long have we been sitting here?" Rebecca wondered.

"Long enough," Shaun scoffed, glancing around. In the back of the van Bill and Desmond waited quietly. At the very least they hadn't been spotted by anyone that would give them trouble. Still, it was dangerous sitting out here like this. Shaun felt too exposed.

He perked up, spotting a black van rounding the corner. "There it is!" he called, starting up their own. They'd need to follow these guys to a good location and when they stopped, get them by surprise. With any luck there wouldn't be too much of a fuss.

What Shaun didn't expect was for how long this would take. Hours seem to pass as they followed after before the van did pull to a stop in a nearby parking garage. He wasted no time in pulling in after them. The ensuing chaos would be enough to leave Shaun shaken and antsy for some time even as they pulled open the other van's doors nad urged her outside with them. Desmond could only hold them off for so long.

"C'mon! We'll get you out, promise!" Rebecca was urging her, reaching for the woman's hands to help her out.

----[x]----
Matilda didn't know where she was or why she was here. She stood out like a sore thumb, that much was obvious. She was just glad that she was wearing a pair of loose pants instead of shorts like she'd intended on changing into. At least this was she wasn't showing too much skin when everyone here seemed to be dressing way more conservatively, even old time-y.

Many people were looking at her, whispering behind their hands and gesturing at her. None of them really seemed to want to approach her though and Matilda was glad for that. She'd rather not be heckled when her head hurt so badly and it was hard to really walk straight.

However far she walked Matilda couldn't be sure. The cobblestone and dirt paths were rough on her bare feet but Matilda continued to push. At least, until a cautious voice called out to her, causing her to stop. Leaning up against the rough wall beside her she turned, brow furrowing at the boy that stood there.

For a moment she could only stand there, staring dumbly at the familiar boy. His skin was several shades darker than her own, hair a dark black with a single braid hanging on one side. 'How...?' Matilda wondered, briefly theorizing that she might be dreaming. That was until a painful throbbing reminded her of that headache of hers.

"You're that boy," she muttered to herself, confused about what was happening. Shaking her head, Matilda pressed her hand to her forehead, squeezing her eyes shut. Loud enough for the boy to hear her she answered, "Matilda."

She could swear she heard him come closer, his foot steps rather quiet compared to those noises around them. This place seemed to be right out of time and she feared why that was or how she'd even gotten here or why the boy from her dreams was standing in front of her now.

Lalia laid her head back against the cold metal of the van. Hours must have passed by this point. She had lost count of all of the twists and turns.

Eventually, the van did draw to a halt. She lifted her head, her eyebrows furrowing when the people driving didn't come around to open the doors. They were armed and they liked to let her know it. Instead, she heard the sounds of a struggle outside.

Her heart thudded hard against her chest. She stood up, not really sure what to do. The doors swung open and instead of finding the normal people guarding her, there was a woman there. She shouted for Lalia, promising to get her somewhere safe.

For a long moment, Lalia didn't know what to think. She remained rooted to the spot, her thoughts running a million miles a minute. Eventually, she forced herself to take the woman's hand and move forward, hopping out of the van.

"Hurry up!" she heard an older fellow bark, "We have the girl Desmond, let's move!"

Lalia didn't get to look or see who was speaking to whom. She was already being led to another van and ushered inside. She just hoped that she wouldn't be led to a place worse than the one she'd been in.

¸„.-•~¹°”ˆ˜¨ [ ❊ ] ¨˜ˆ”°¹~•-.„¸

Connor tipped his head to one side curiously. This girl was familiar in a nagging way. He had to think back to recall where he'd seen her. He remembered dreams, faint as they were, about this girl.

Connor blinked, a little shocked that he was looking at her now. She was flesh and blood and not a dream. When he saw her on those odd nights, he believed that they were nothing more than dreams.

He couldn't linger on those thoughts long. She answered him, giving her a name. Matilda was an odd name but he didn't put much stock into it.

"Matilda," he echoed, taking a few careful steps forward. He was careful to make sure that she wasn't startled by him. "What did you mean by 'you are that boy?'"

It was a big assumption on his part but maybe she had seen him too. Connor couldn't put a whole lot of stock in that theory however. Up until this point, he'd only believed this girl was a dream.

"My name is Connor," he introduced, using his new name rather than his given one, "it is good to meet you Matilda. You look tired. Perhaps I could help you?"

Shaun helped to get the woman to their van with Rebecca, the woman moving slowly as it was. If she really did have red eyes Shaun hadn't had the chance to see yet but then things were chaotic, Desmond holding off the few guys trying to get the woman back from them.

"Come on!" Shaun urged, helping her up into the back of the van.

Rebecca was already slipping into the passenger seat by this time.
"Desmond, Bill! We've gotta go!"

Shaun turned the key, the engine roaring to life again by the time the other two men were scrambling into the back of the van. The doors had just barely slammed shut before Shaun was pulling out, heading back onto the road. No one seemed to have seen the fiasco or heard anything or if they had they'd called the police when no one was paying attention or where they couldn't hear them.

'No one better have caught sight of the license plate number...' Shaun brooded. From the corner of his eye he spotted Rebecca leaning back, peering at the three behind them. She might have been smiling though Shaun couldn't tell and he was going fast enough that he wasn't about to take his eyes off of the road.

"Sorry about the fuss. I'm Rebecca, what's your name?" Rebecca greeted, acting as if nothing had gone on that was unusual.

"Oh, that's great, Rebecca, just act casual! Give the girl room to breath, would you?" Shaun got swatted on the arm for that.

----[x]----
The boy walked a few steps closer to her, repeating her name and asking about what she'd muttered to herself. His steps were as deliberate as his words sounded, maybe English wasn't his first language. Matilda just shook her head, unwilling to explain it and sounding crazy. She already looked the part as it was, different from those around her with how she was dressed.

"It's nothing," she mumbled dismissively.

Despite the headache she observed the boy now that he was in front of her. He couldn't have been older than thirteen, his face still boyish with baby fat. Though he was a lean thing he didn't have any sort of muscle definition to lend any credence to an older kid.

He gave his name soon after, asking if she needed assistance. Matilda didn't respond right away, still unsure about all of this. How she got here and why or how this boy was an actual person were still concerns for her and she wasn't even sure if she'd get answers to any of those. The people around here all seemed alarmed by her. Judging by the size of this city it couldn't have been hidden away from the rest of the world but a place in the States that was so steeped in history like this place seemed to be would have been more widely known she'd think.

Finally Matilda said, "If you think you can help..."

She wasn't sure what a kid his age could do but then Matilda wasn't sure of much right now either. Everything was crazy to her, unable to make sense of any of it. It didn't help that it was hard to walk with this headache, feeling a little too hot already. The chilly air—was it morning?—didn't help to cool her off any either.

Lalia couldn't even start clearing her head as the van she'd been transferred into pulled out of the parking garage at a high speed. Her heart thumped hard against her chest and her throat felt tight all over again.

"That could have gone in worse ways, the younger man in the back with her spoke up. She only spared the briefest of glances before averting her gaze downward. The people who held her often paid a lot of mind to her eyes. She was a little afraid of lifting her gaze because of it.

"In case you haven't noticed, we're not out of the woods yet," the older man said, only earning a scoff out of the other. "I don't suppose you could focus a little more on the road?"

The conversations were moving so fast, something far from what she was used to now. In the last few weeks, Lalia hadn't done a whole lot of talking to anyone. So when a question was directed to her, she nearly missed it.

"I uh...My name is Lalia," she finally answered, albeit a little quietly. Her throat felt a little strained with the effort but she tried to ignore it.

¸„.-•~¹°”ˆ˜¨ [ ❊ ] ¨˜ˆ”°¹~•-.„¸

Matilda didn't answer his first question. He tried not to be bothered or demand any answers from her. She looked like she could buckle under her own weight any time soon and he'd rather not put anymore stress on her now.

"Alright," he answered carefully.

He studied her again. She really was the girl from his dream. Connor wasn't sure what to make of all of this. He wasn't even sure if there was any sense to make in it. Eventually, he simply shook his head.

She didn't deny his offer to help if anything at all. She seemed open to it, if a little skeptical sounding. Connor spared a nod in response.

He motioned toward the way he had come. "We are heading out of the city," he explained, "my mentor and me, I mean. He may be able to provide you a place to stay."

Connor wasn't so sure of that. Still, it was worth a try. Achilles might not agree right off the bat so it would take a little time. Regardless, he started to lead their way, hoping that Matilda would be able to make it the distance.

Shaun scoffed, shaking his head. Of course he was paying attention to the road, what else would he be looking at? When they were in a rush he wasn't about to fool around even if Rebecca was twisted around in her seat to talk to the woman they'd rescued.

"We'll be fine with yours truly at the wheel," Shaun answered, perhaps a little sarcastically, "if Rebecca was at the wheel then you'd need to be concerned."

He grunted as Rebecca swatted at him again and shouted
"Hey!" This didn't faze him much, even when she'd turned again waiting on the woman to speak up. Finding out her name might be for the best, they'd all been in a rush to get her and then get a move on. They were on a time limit after all whether or not they actively thought about it.

"Lalia then," Shaun said, barely having heard her over the road noise, "I hope you're not a waste of our precious time."

The edge of the city was coming into view and soon enough they'd be out in the country, by that time they could breath easier. Shaun hadn't heard any sirens or saw any flashing lights, a blessing really. It was amazing that they'd not been pulled over unless someone else had been station here to keep an eye on them. Shaun wasn't sure who it would be considering how spread thin the assassins were in this time.

"Don't let him bother you, he's always an ass like that," Rebecca excused.

"Who,  me? You have me mistaken for someone else," Shaun argued.

----[x]----
If the kid, Connor, was bothered by her dismissing his first question he didn't show it or act like it. Instead he'd waited for her to answer the other ones, looking as if he wanted something more. Perhaps he was just as confused as she was. If that was the case Matilda would feel a little less bothered by all of this, but only a little.

Matilda wasn't too sure of this mentor of his but if there was someone older, someone who could actually do something then it was a start. She wasn't unaware of the risks however. Just because Connor might be willing to help didn't mean whoever was watching over him would be.

"Lead the way," Matilda urged quietly, gesturing for him to do just that.

It didn't take Connor long to start them off, glancing back at her as he went. Was he afraid she'd collapse or just run off? Matilda wouldn't be able to manage the latter if she even wanted to.

Though it was cold Matilda felt too hot as it was and she worried that she might have a fever on top of everything else. Her bare toes did start to tingle however, the cold getting to them quickly. She tried to follow after Connor as quickly as she could manage though it was hard when she had to keep stopping as a wave of dizziness or nausea would wash over her.

Eventually Connor's steps slowed and Matilda glanced up, catching sight of a darker-skinned man nearby. He seemed to have been waiting, glancing around the crowds that passed by the wagon he stood near. His gaze finally landed on them, a skeptical look crossing his features. It was only when they drew nearer did the elderly man speak up.

"What is this? I would have hoped we'd get through our trip to Boson without you sticking your nose into things."

Lalia ignored the comment, offering a bit of a shrug in response. It wasn't as if she knew a whole lot of what was going on. "It's alright," she answered quietly, "a little dry sarcasm doesn't hurt anybody."

"Do you always have to come off as an ass when you meet someone new, Shaun?" the one beside her spoke up again. There was a hint of sarcasm in his voice. Maybe they were all used to each other. Lalia couldn't say. "I'm Desmond, by the way. And that's William though everyone just calls him Bill."

Lalia could only study the faces, no real opinions on them yet. If she was honest with herself, she was as just as suspicious and apprehensive as she was with that other group.

She caught the older man, Bill, tipping his head to get a better look at her eyes. She glanced away, hoping that no one had really caught sight of them. Her eyes made her feel uncomfortable as it was now.

"She's no waste. Her eyes are red. Curious after so many centuries without a sighting of a misfortunes child."

Lalia swallowed, hoping that would keep her throat from feeling so tight. People had been throwing that word around a lot lately. She didn't know what it meant or if it had to do with the visions she had but it got a lot of people interested in her.

¸„.-•~¹°”ˆ˜¨ [ ❊ ] ¨˜ˆ”°¹~•-.„¸

The walk back seemed slow to Connor. He would slow his pace for her when she looked like she was about to totter over. Was she ill? If he studied her, she did look a little pale.

He had to wonder how she got here. What more, why was she the girl in his dreams? It was all very good and he couldn't begin to find any kind of answers.

He would have to think on it later. For the moment, he was simply trying to think of a believably argument to sway Achilles. He wouldn't be pleased with Connor.

Minutes passed by slowly before he caught sight of the elderly man. He noticed Matilda quickly and was already digging into him about it. Connor cleared his throat, glancing back at Matilda.

"It is...hard to explain," he answered carefully, "I understand that this is much but she needs help. Looking the way she does, you and I both know she will not last five minutes wandering about the city."

It wasn't much but he hoped it was enough to sway him. Achilles might nag at him on their way back. Connor could take that much. He was curious of this young woman and in a way, wanted to keep her nearby if only for that reason.

Desmond was quick to hop onto Shaun about his behavior alongside Rebecca. Shaun merely shook his head, waving a dismissive hand at him in answer. If that's what they thought then so be it. Nonetheless he did mutter under his breath, "no one appreciates a little sarcasm anymore."

"No, it's just you we don't appreciate," Rebecca joked.

It was quiet for a moment, the sound of the vehicle on the road the only noise filling that silence in. Now that they were out on the road Shaun slowed some, just so that they were going the speed limit at least. No one seemed to be after them though perhaps that was because Abstergo didn't want to be nailed for kidnapping either. They'd have a target painted on their backs now.

'At least we're heading out into the countryside,' Shaun mused. At least that way they'd be hidden, the van out of sight from other people.

"Well, at least this wasn't all for nothing then!" Shaun chimed in when Bill mentioned Lalia's eye color. He'd been worried that this was a wild goose chase though at least they had something to show for it now.

Whatever expression the girl was wearing must have gotten to Rebecca. She was still twisted around, leaning over the center console in a position that couldn’t have been comfortable so that she could easily talk to the three in the back. Shaun was glad that she wasn’t the one driving if she was this interested in the newcomer.

”Hey, no need to worry, we’re the good guys. You’ll have to go into hiding with us though or Abstergo’s gonna come finding you again,” she was saying to Lalia.

----[x]----
Matilda stood back, just waiting and watching as best that she could. She was unsteady on her feet though and it was hard to keep herself from just sitting on the cold ground while they talked. The man wasn't enthused about Matilda being here that much was clear, especially so when he spoke up about it to Connor.

Connor was speaking up and Matilda spared a glance at the kid, noting now how short he was compared to her. For the moment it didn't seem like it mattered but if she'd have needed a shoulder to lean on on the way here Matilda figured Connor might have had a lot of trouble keeping her upright enough to walk. She pushed the thought away when the old man spoke up.

"You are already becoming a handful," a pause ensued then. Matilda warily watched the man as he glanced at her, leaning on his cane as he did so. Finally the man shook his head and gestured to Connor. "Am I to assume that you will not let this drop, much like your insistence to be trained?"

Matilda glanced at Connor at that though there wasn't a long train of thought about what this man had said. If she was allowed to follow after these two Matilda figured she'd find out eventually anyways. For now she was quiet, just wanting to sleep.

"I don't take up much room and I keep to myself," Matilda pointed out quietly, closing her eyes as the world seemed to sway beneath her.

She heard the man sigh and imagined him shaking his head. When she opened her eyes again he was gesturing to the wagon, looking exasperated as he did so.
"Climb in the back, with clothes like that you'll attract too much attention."

Matilda blinked, a little surprised at the instructions. Nonetheless she did just that, careful of the supplies stacked up in the back. Matilda wasted no time in laying down and throwing an arm over her eyes. She'd worry about everything else when she felt better.

Lalia listened to the idle banter quietly, occasionally running her thumb over her palm. Her hands still shook but not as violently as before. She couldn't really recall a time when her body felt completely still in these passed few weeks.

She was sick to her stomach and she tried not to let the sway of the road bother her. It was hard to settle down after what happened.

"I'd never heard of a 'misfortune's child' up until this point," Desmond had brought up after Bill. Shaun made a comment as well, rather confident about the entirety of it all not being a waste.

"Most of the ones who carried the gene were executed hundreds of years ago,"  Bill explained, "it's hard to believe that one would exist today. This is a lucky break, none the less."

Lalia glanced up if only for a moment to listen. She wasn't sure what to make of that information but it was more than she was told in the last few weeks.

Rebecca had broken those thoughts, trying to offer some kind of reassurance. She was still uncertain but it was better than being locked in a room or sedated in hopes to bring out some reaction among other things those people had managed to do.

"I'm confused," she finally spoke up, her throat still a little hoarse, "I thought Abstergo was just a medical company."

"There's a decently long story behind that on," Desmond answered her, "We'll get to it eventually."

¸„.-•~¹°”ˆ˜¨ [ ❊ ] ¨˜ˆ”°¹~•-.„¸

Connor wasn't sure what he could say to sway him. Matilda stuck out like a sore thumb and he wanted to get to the bottom of what was going on here. Couldn't he see that?

"If I have to," he answered a little stubbornly. Connor felt he hadn't asked for a lot. Then again, maybe Matilda was a lot of Achilles to handle.

He spared a glance back toward her. For a moment, she swayed on her feet, closing her eyes as if that would steady herself. Connor watched her carefully, wondering if she was going to pass out briefly or not.

Her words were enough to convince Achilles. She didn't take long to slip into the back, laying down. Connor moved to the side of the cart, ready to get moving.

"It will be fine," he tried to reassure, "I will keep an eye on her."

Connor wasn't about to let her run off. He was more than just a little curious. When the time came, maybe he would tell her about the dreams as well. For the moment, as ill as she was looking, it seemed inappropriate.

Regardless of this reassurance, Achilles still didn't look happy. For the short time he'd known the name, Connor wasn't exactly surprised. It was enough to just get the man to train him. This was no doubt another annoyance to deal with.

Bill filled Desmond in on what a misfortune's child was. At the very least they'd all be caught up now even if the drive would be a long one. Shaun wondered just what kind of questions this woman might have. From what they'd been told she had no part in this battle between assassins and Templars until she'd been taken in by Abstergo.

Shaun scoffed when Lalia mentioned the company dabbling only in medical supplies and the like. There was so much more to it than that, their company being branded only for looks. It kept people from delving in too deep most times. Shaun just had to wonder what else the company would dabble into to expand the amount of people that adored them and their products.

"There's a lot you'll be confused about," Shaun pointed out.

"But you'll have us to walk you through it all!" Rebecca chimed in.

Shaun glanced in the mirrors, watching for any suspicious vehicles behind them as he turned off of the crowded road onto a less used one. It was the only route here to take them where they needed to go and at least this way it'd be easy to spot someone following them. 'So far so good,' Shaun thought.

"Ah, yes, I just hope your explanations are actually understandable, Rebecca," Shaun sniffed. He grunted when she jabbed his arm with her elbow.

----[x]----
As she followed instructions Matilda could hear Connor and that elderly man speaking more though she paid little attention to what the words were. For now she just needed to sleep and if that boy was real surely she wouldn't be disturbed by any dreams or visions of him anymore. At least, Matilda sure hoped that was the case.

She was dozing off already by the time the wagon started moving, the clopping of hooves reaching her ears. Wherever they were going didn't matter much to Matilda right now, she wasn't even sure that she was in a place in which she could get home anyways. When she was feeling better she'd try to get answers.

However long passed wasn't anything Matilda could guess at. For the most part she slept though a few times she was prodded awake to eat something, mostly by Connor. She'd eventually learned that the older man's name was Achilles and that he was a fairly boorish man though he hadn't done anything to her personally. Whatever had him acting that way wasn't important enough to Matilda at the time to warrant much thought or prying.

Eventually she woke enough to be aware of the bright daylight streaming down and of someone—Achilles by the sound of it—was mentioning arriving at 'the homestead'. Matilda wasn't awake enough to make much of that only that wherever they were going they'd gotten to.

For the time being she merely waited, trying to catch a few more minutes of sleep despite the bumpy ride. Someone would prod her awake when she was needed to move at any rate and she was still trying to get her fill of sleep before anything put a damper on that.

Lalia hadn't been sure what to expect in answer. There seemed to be a lot more going on than she could have ever realized. Her mind was already whirling with what information she could gain, as confusing as it was.

At least they were offering to explain things. That beat being locked down in a nearly completely white room and prodded for these visions that came out of no where.

"That beats the lack of information anyone was willing to give me," she replied, brushing her finger passed her palm again. Anything she asked was either met with no answer or an indirect on.

"You weren't much more than a puppet to them, something to poke and prod,"  Bill replied, "I would have been surprised if they shared anything with you."

Whatever those people were up to, it had to be something of a grander scale. Lalia knew of a few conspiracy theories and it almost seemed like she was forced right into one. She was still uncertain on how she felt about that much.

¸„.-•~¹°”ˆ˜¨ [ ❊ ] ¨˜ˆ”°¹~•-.„¸

The day passed quickly after that. Mostly, it was in silence other than the odd argument that cropped up here and there. Connor was still stubborn and rather adamant about keeping Matilda around.

On occasion, they did stop. It was only then did Connor ever wake her. She was looking a little better as time went on. If she was sick, she didn't let on. She simply kept to herself most of the time, like she said so far.

Time past slowly before the homestead came into sight. Relief washed over Connor at that. He could focus on a little more training and less arguments. There was Matilda to talk to in his spare time as well.

When the cart halted, hopped off, moving toward the back. "We are here, Matilda," he called out, hoping to wake the young woman, "feeling any better?"

There were times when she down right looked like she'd sleep for days if she could. Connor wasn't sure what put her in that state and didn't try to ask. He figured there would be a time and place for that some other time.

At the very least Lalia wasn't demanding to be let out or to get more answers than they had to give. Even they didn't have much knowledge about misfortune's children though it didn't help that oftentimes they'd been seen as something to be feared in the past. It put quite the damper on actually getting answers over time.

"Well not even the Templars have much knowledge on them from the sounds of things," Shaun pointed out, "at least there's that..."

Bill was saying more about how they might have taken to keeping Lalia in the dark though that much would have been obvious. If nothing else they knew how to keep secrets, far from being easily pried by the assassins. It made things hard on them though they wouldn't give up trying.

"How far do we have to go, Shaun?" Rebecca wondered, finally sitting in her seat properly.

"Too long," he answered, "please don't make it a habit of asking every ten minutes."

It was easy to ignore the pouty glare Rebecca gave him. If nothing else she wasn't arguing with him and for now that was a blessing. Rebecca usually took to starting anything she could just to annoy him. He glanced in the rear view mirror again, no one was behind them.

"Everything calming down back there?" he wondered.

----[x]----
Matilda eventually became aware of the fact that the wagon had come to a stop though she still didn't try to rouse herself further. Instead she focused on trying to get more sleep even if she was starting to feel better. For the time being she worried about not getting enough again, trying to get it when she could. It seemed that idea wouldn't last long however.

Someone was trying to get her up, urging her to do so really. It only took a moment to realize it was Connor trying to get her up. Matilda grunted, at least showing that she heard Connor. For a moment she covered her eyes, attempting to will herself up at least. It took some seconds before she actually managed it however.

"Where is here?" Matilda wondered groggily, finally letting her hand drop to peer at Connor. At his second question Matilda shrugged. While she felt a little more restful she still didn't know where she was or why.

"That would be my home, or rather what's left of it for the moment," Achilles answered, appearing shortly after.

Achilles gestured to some house that Matilda couldn't see yet, not until she climbed out of the wagon at least. She was careful of the supplies but still ended up banging her shin on a pile of the lumber. The ground was still cold to her bare feet but it at least wasn't anything like the cold stones back in the city. The building that must have been Achilles' home was a rundown thing, places in need of patching up easy to spot from here. She wondered if the inside was any better or not.

"I see," Matilda said, cocking her head to one side as she continued to study the building, "what should I do?"

From the sounds of it, neither the people who had her before nor this group knew much about what had happened to her. The visions or this 'misfortune child' thing were just as foreign to them as it was to her.

Lalia should have taken some amount of relief in the fact that she was 'safe', so to speak. She couldn't however. Those visions, horrible as they were, would still continue no matter how much she wanted to block them out.

"Calm as it can be," Desmond had replied to who was at the wheel. Lalia briefly recalled the name though it didn't feel important for the moment. On occasion, she could feel a casting glance on her and ignored it.

Wherever they were heading was going to take time. Not that she wasn't used to that at this point. The most she could do was sit back and wait, content in just letting things unfold as they did.

Again, her thoughts drew to Matilda, wondering if the young woman was alright or if she had discovered that Lalia was missing. There were some nights she saw the girl in her dreams. Lalia shook it from her head instead focusing on gathering herself. It would take time and it seemed for the moment, that's all she had to spare.

¸„.-•~¹°”ˆ˜¨ [ ❊ ] ¨˜ˆ”°¹~•-.„¸

Connor studied her as she moved. She was still sluggish though he didn't push her to get going any faster. He had briefly worried about her illness, whatever it was, and what might happen to her. If anything, color was at least returning to her face.

He tipped his head, watching as she sat up groggily. The answer she gave wasn't much. She was able to sit up without swaying, so Connor was able to take that as something.

He stepped back, giving her room to move off the cart if she so wished to. The answer was given rather quickly and she studied the area.

"Maybe we should find you some clothes?" he suggested when she asked what needed to be done. She was still barefoot as it was. That couldn't be good for her, given the state she was already in.

Connor spared a glance toward Achilles, shrugging his shoulders. It was a start and given that she'd be sticking around, she needed something. This was unplanned, of course, but Connor hoped they'd all get used to it in time.

The drive after that was quiet. Shaun didn't mind it much though apparently Rebecca did if the fact that she'd reached for the radio eventually. The station wasn't one Shaun would usually pick but at least it was something even if it occasionally played music that grated on his nerves. No one else seemed to mind it and he'd rather not fuss with the radio as he drove.

Occasionally Rebecca twisted in her seat again, glancing around at those in the back of the van. For the most part everyone was lost in their own thoughts though Bill might have very well been on one of the laptops as well. Just because they were traveling didn't mean other assassins weren't trying to get a hold of them.

Minutes seemed to be longer than they really were. Hell, it felt like hours before Desmond spoke up, pointing him in the right direction. The trees around them towered over the van as they went over the dirt road, out of the way of any sort of main road or town. At least here they'd be relatively safe. It also helped that Shaun had been able to slow the van considerably when they'd hit country roads, able to keep an eye on anyone tailing them out here without much worry.

"Looks like this is the place, huh?" Rebecca spoke up, glancing back at Desmond for confirmation.

"Well, let's get our merry little band into gear, shall we?" Shaun spoke up as he pulled up towards the mouth of a cave.

He wasn't exactly enthused to be spending a long time out in this place, there was no way they knew what waited for them here. Desmond didn't even seem to know what to expect. Shaun made sure to tuck the keys to the van in his pocket as he got out, ready to help unload their gear. He wasn't sure what Lalia would be doing except for following after. She wasn't an assassin and she had no real obligation to help them if she didn't want to.

----[x]----
Matilda could feel eyes on he rand it wasn't hard to guess that it was Connor. For the most part Achilles only spared her attention when he felt like it though from the short times she'd been awake on the way here it seemed like he did the same to Connor anyways. Perhaps the old man was used to being on his own and didn't prefer much company. From the sounds of things this seemed the most likely to her.

At the mention of new clothes Matilda glanced down at herself, picking at a holey spot in her jeans. It bared some of her thigh though not much to be in danger of ripping further anytime soon. Then again with the clothes Achilles and Connor wore and all those people in that old time-y Boston Matilda did stick out like a sore thumb.

"I'd rather not wear a dress," Matilda muttered eventually, "not exactly something I'm comfortable in."

True, she'd been rather adverse to wearing them as a child she did wear a few on special occasions. They were often too breezy for her however and she preferred a good pair of pants or shorts instead. Matilda wasn't too sure if that could be easily accommodated here however.

"There might be something hiding around that you can borrow for a time," Achilles said with a sigh. He eyed Matilda for a moment before rapping her shin with his cane and ignoring the look he received for it. "Picky as you are."

"If you say so," Matilda muttered, resisting rubbing her abused shin.

Achilles turned to Connor then, gesturing to the battered house as he spoke again.
"Might as well show her around then. I'll be needing to find those friends of yours for the repairs."

Lalia wasn't sure how much time had passed on the road. She was getting used to it already. From one transport to another, she'd sat through long rides before this point. If anything, it had given her time to sleep undisturbed.

At some point, Desmond spoke up and pointed Shaun in the direction they needed to be heading. Lalia merely observed, still rather unsure of all of this. What had these people sneaking about was a mystery to her.

"This is the place," Desmond agreed quickly with Rebecca. From where Lalia sat, it seemed like everyone was eager to get moving.

"Good, let's get to work," William's voice rang out. He was already on his feet after the van drew to a halt. Lalia spared a quick glance around as the others followed suit. Eventually, she did the same and exited the van.

Lalia moved to the mouth of the cave, peering in. She felt anxious here for some reason. She quickly blamed it on her nerves, shot as they were already. Something was off here though and she couldn't place what.

She glanced back at the others. They were attending to cases of who knew what. Lalia stepped back a little, shuffling her weight and partly wondered if she should give a hand as well.

Connor studied Matilda again. If she caught onto this curiosity, she hadn't said anything yet. Then again, half the time she wasn't even conscious. Whatever illness had afflicted her, it was enough to keep her sleeping for the duration of the trip.

She seemed to take into account that her clothing was strange. Connor had never seen anything like it before, not among the people he knew. He had seen her though and while he didn't know why, at least some of what was happening was familiar. He just wished he had some answers.

It didn't take long for Achilles to respond, however displeased with the situation he might have been. For the most part, Matilda seemed to ignore it.

"Of course," Connor answered, sparing a quick glance around. There wasn't much here but enough to keep them occupied. "Come on, then."

He motioned for Matilda to follow after all the while, keeping an eye on her. Part of him feared she still may sway on her feet. She seemed to have recovered a little since the time they had met though.

"May I ask where you are from?" he inquired, glancing at her. The curiosity was burning in him, especially so now that the girl from his 'visions', however vague they may have been, had become real.

While Shaun worked to pack up some of the stuff that had been dragged out for Bill to use while they drove he spotted Lalia moving towards the mouth of the cave and peering inside. Rebecca was already handing out some glow sticks for everyone to use, attaching her own to her belt. She'd have her arms full of cargo as well after all.

Only after Shaun snapped his and let it hang from his belt loop did he hoist one of the crates up and start after Desmond. Rebecca and Bill were quick to follow, if they didn't have any problems they'd be able to get things set up in no time. At least that's what Shaun hoped for. This stuff was heavy and he'd rather not lug it around for long if he had to.

"Don't worry, we know what we're doing," Rebecca told Lalia as they passed her. The young woman fell instep with them though she still looked around cautiously at the odd groves and images and graffiti that lined the cave walls.

"Oh, yeah, just wandering on down the rabbit hole and all," Shaun scoffed, "no idea what might be down there."

"Shaun!" Rebecca scolded. He could just make out the look she shot him in the glow from the small glowsticks.

"What?" Shaun shrugged, adjusting the crate in his arms. Ahead of them Desmond was toying with the Apple, staring at what looked like some kind of indent in the wall. Shaun and the others could only wait to see what would happen now even if Lalia didn't seem so sure about the whole thing.

----[x]----
While they talked the feeling of eyes on her was prevalent. It didn't take much to figure out it was Connor seeing as there were only three of them standing there. Matilda didn't respond to this however. She was dressed radically different than anyone else she'd seen yet much less those that had accompanied Connor in those strange dreams of hers. She was probably a big source of curiosity to him.

Though her shin smarted where Achilles had rapped her with that cane of his Matilda didn't put much stock in it. He seemed like a grouchy guy anyways and he really didn't have to keep her around as it was. For the most part she'd just try to take things with a grain of salt here as she tried to figure out what had happened to land her in this situation. Did it have something to do with those visions of Connor?

She was shaken from her thoughts as Connor gestured for her to follow him, leading her towards the large house. For a moment Matilda didn't say or do anything before she realized what was going on, only then did she start after him, falling instep with Connor. He was a little shorter than her, she realized as they walked, but then he was younger too.

"Well," she answered, unsure of the when and the where she was. She couldn't even be sure if the placed she'd lived at was around yet. The thought was unnerving. "Somewhere up north, not quite to Canada though."

For a moment she just studied the house as they stepped up to the door. Connor was already pushing his way inside, waiting for her to follow. The inside of the house didn't look much better than the outside though at least it was holding up. Matilda hoped the guys that would be working on the repairs knew what they were doing though.

"What brought a kid like you to this kind of place?" she wondered in return.

Lalia remained where she was for a long while. It didn't take them all as long as it might have seemed. They seemed eager to get moving and do...well, whatever they needed to get done.

She was the only one overly anxious. It was a nagging feeling and one she felt justified. There was something about this place that wasn't right. Lalia tried to shake it off, carefully taking the glow stick she'd been given.

Lalia trailed behind them, careful of where she stepped. She studied the walls and the strange marks on them. Her heart beat quickly in her chest. Trying to ignore it, she started forward again.

Only when she drew to a halt did her gaze flicker back to the door. She watched, a little curiosity baiting her as Desmond toyed with something in his hand. Eventually, he put the round object into the wall and stepped back.

"Look like this is it," she heard him mutter. Even as the rumbling of these strange doors drown out some of those words, it all seemed to bounce and echo through the cavern.

"Let's get moving then," William spoke up, starting forward already, "we can't afford to waste anymore time."

Lalia wasn't sure of any of this. She was just as lost as she had been in that other place. She swallowed hard before she spoke up, "What is this place?" She hoped to at least get an answer to that.

¸„.-•~¹°”ˆ˜¨ [ ❊ ] ¨˜ˆ”°¹~•-.„¸

Matilda looked to be lost in thought for a long moment. He didn't push her to hurry up or break her of those thoughts. Honestly, he wasn't even sure if he could. She was strange and seemingly in a strange place. What right did he have to break her thoughts, whatever they may be.

Connor started forward and eventually she followed. She caught up with him easily. She must have been a little older then he was, judging simply by her height alone.

Part of him wasn't sure if she would answer him. Eventually she did. He hadn't heard of the place she was describing but he knew how far north was. A lot of people were settling up that way.

"Kid?" he echoed the word, eyebrows raising a little, "what is a kid?"

That was a word he was unfamiliar with. She really was strange to be saying these things. He waited, as if on baited breath, for her to answer his question. When he processed that she had asked him something however, he cleared his throat.

"I am here to train," he answered after a moment, "to become an assassin. Achilles has agreed to train me...though he is rather unpleasant at times."

The Apple was in Desmond's hand, soon to be placed in that large indent in the wall that Shaun could see from where he stood. Even in shadows it was obviously there, made for something specific. Shaun just hoped this wasn't a waste of time, that the Piece of Eden would actually do whatever it needed to and they'd be able to set up shop in a safe location here.

The grind of stone that followed placing the Apple in that indent however left everyone startled, glancing around as dust and small pebbles fell from the cave's ceiling. Shaun couldn't help but to recall his earlier comment of going down the rabbit hole and how accurate a statement it had been. He hardly realized he was quoting 'Alice in Wonderland' though until he'd already finished. No one seemed to hear him either though.

"Well... lead the way, Desmond," Rebecca prodded, sounding a little anxious herself.

Shaun glanced at Lalia as they started forward again into the dark tunnel before them. He was glad that Rebecca had passed out those glow sticks already, the illumination nothing to scoff at in such a dark place. They at least let them see where they were stepping and with anything that could be hiding in there that was a blessing in itself.

"Don't imagine you'll want to be left behind," Shaun pointed out, jerking his head in the direction the others had already headed, "there's no telling what might come shambling about."

----[x]----
It was quiet for a long minute after she asked why he was here. For a moment Matilda wasn't sure Connor was going to answer her at all but when she did it only helped to show just how far back in time she might have been thrown. She hoped she'd find a way to figure out how this had happened, how it was even possible to seemingly travel through time at all.

For a moment she struggled to think of the right word before she finally held out her hands in a mock shrug and said, "it means 'child', both for boys and girls, I guess. It's slang."

He didn't seem too pleased by that answer though Connor accepted it nonetheless. If she was in the timeframe she thought she might in this didn't surprise Matilda. People were considered adults once they hit puberty instead of at eighteen after all. He was probably close to being considered a man as it was, if she had to guess at his age.

His answer for why he'd come here was a little alarming. For a moment Matilda couldn't think of the words to say to that, stunned into silence at the casual way he'd said he was out to become an assassin of all things. Her brow furrowed as she glanced at him, studying his lanky frame and rounded face. 'I'm hanging with some nut jobs, lovely,' Matilda decided silently.

"Might have to get a bit more muscle on you before you get that big, scary title," she teased a little dryly.

Matilda tried to ignore how the floorboards creaked under her as they walked. Instead she inspected the walls, the few decorations that still littered the home and walls though much of it was coated in dust even now. She hoped it wouldn't send her allergies off but with how much was lying around she knew that wasn't going to be the case.
