At the stables and introduced to Balthos Ilana immediately set to work on approaching the horse. Garret watched, nearby in case Balthos acted up too badly for her to handle. It seemed she knew what she was doing however, moving slowly and halting whenever Balthos grew antsy.

Garret nodded in approval though Ilana was not looking his way. She knew a thing or two, already moving to inspect the horse and complimenting the beast as she did so. It seemed she hadn’t been lying after all.

He smiled at her, nodding to Balthos as he spoke. “About sixteen, give or take a few months. He’s well taken care of given my penchant for travel.”

At the very least that much was true. The brotherhood’s work left him moving all over the frontier and within the cities and colonies planted within it. Occasionally his horse had been in danger but he’d been lucky that Balthos had never acquired such an injury that he’d need to acquire a new horse.

“If you can handle him a moment I will fetch the saddle bags I left here,” Garret stated.

Only once Ilana gave her approval of this did he move away, easily locating his bags an the supplies within. He gave a cursory glance through the bags to make sure nothing was stolen or low on supplies. They would be fine for some time and Garret knew how to hunt. They would not run low out in the wild unless an emergency happened.

Hoisting the bags into his arms he headed back, ready to load down Balthos. It would make the horse testier but at the very least the movement would be good for them all.

Hakkaku stubbornly refused to back down this time. Something was clearly bothering Kōga enough that he wasn’t even fawning over Kagome like usual. Granted she hadn’t been around today but that alone would have usually been enough to send Kōga into an anger enough to start accusing InuYasha of things.

Ginta was clearly just as worried as Hakkaku was as he was quick to pitch in too. They were far enough away from InuYasha’s group that it wasn’t like there was anyone else around to overhear but all the same Kōga seemed to get sheepish. Hakkaku waited, hoping that Kōga wasn’t going to try to hand wave it away like he and Sachiko had been doing all this time.

Several seconds passed in silence and Hakkaku half-expected that Kōga wouldn’t answer at all, maybe he’d even run off ahead of them like always, leaving them unable to catch up until he stopped or doubled back. It seemed the thought didn’t cross Kōga’s mind though as he eventually spoke, admitting to what had happened.

Hakkaku blinked, a little taken aback by that. He and Ginta had suspected something had happened but not a near kiss! He glanced at Ginta offering a quick shrug. It sounded to Hakkaku like Kōga’s affections might have shifted from Kagome to Sachiko at some point though when it happened Hakkaku couldn’t say.

“But if it’s just a mistake why are you two acting like it’s something worse?” Hakkaku wondered, honestly confused. Part of him wondered if Sachiko was a little hurt b the idea of it being a mistake though there was no asking her now. “Maybe you should have talked to Sachiko about it…”

Ilana smiled a little proudly knowing that she had guessed right. Balthos was still a rather young horse. He had a lot of years ahead of him. She just hoped he would be treated right in those years.

"Of course," she answered him, taking hold of the rope that bound the horse.

She waited patiently with Balthos, occasionally running her hand down his neck or back. She wanted to make sure his back was still good and not injured. Any weight on an old injury could easily be a problem.

It didn't take him long to return with the packs. He was already placing the saddle bags against Balthos. The horse tried to move back, seemingly not at all pleased about them being against his back.

Ilana did what she could to hold him still, bracing her muscles for it. She patted his neck to help calm him.

"How far will we be going?" she asked Garret, glancing up at the man. He hadn't quite told her where they were headed, after all.

Kōga crossed his arms over his chest, glancing elsewhere. He should have known he wouldn't be rid of this problems as much as he wanted to try. Instead, it came up again through his friends. There was little he could do about it now.

What he said seemed to surprise the two of them. That wasn't so much of a big problem for Kōga. In fact, he expected that surprise. What was suggested next left him uncertain.

"It's...not that easy," he tried to defend.

"Why not? You seem to always think highly of Kagome and never nearly kissed her," Ginta retaliated. In fact, he looked a little frustrated as well.

Kōga wasn't prepared for this sudden interest in all of this. Of course, he'd been dodging questions for days now. Now that they knew, he wouldn't hear the end of it. He rubbed the back of his neck again.

"What am I supposed to say?" he asked then, waiting for one or the other to answer, "She might not even want to be around me or even be here."

Sachiko had a home and friends no doubt. Just because her family was gone didn't mean no one wouldn't miss her. She probably had people waiting for her back in her country. They needed her more than she needed him.

Ilana was definitely in a cheerier mood now that she was able to handle a horse. If that was all it took than perhaps this wouldn’t be so bad. It at least meant that she had something that she liked to occupy her time.

It was a quick matter to retrieve his saddlebags and to return to begin loading them on Balthos. Ilana did her best to steady the horse, patting him as she did when he wasn’t trying to tug himself away from her. While Garret didn’t mention it out loud it certainly made things easier with another pair of hands to subdue Balthos while he tended to the saddle and bags.

He glanced up at her when Ilana asked how far they would be heading. It was quiet only momentarily as he made sure everything was snug on Balthos before he actually answered.

“It will take a week’s worth of travel to reach Darren’s current residence,” he stated. “He doesn’t tend to stay in places for longer than a few years.”

The explanation was unnecessary but would at least explain his choice of words on the matter. It was an odd habit that Darren picked up, a little paranoid even when he wasn’t being exclusively targeted by noted Templars. It would probably be only a temporary relief for Darren to know the angered Templar that had been trailing after him was now dead.

Hakkaku nodded alongside Ginta’s comment. “Yeah, you usually just leave Kagome with InuYasha anyways and do your own thing,” Hakkaku pointed out as well.

For a second or two Kōga didn’t respond. Hakkaku was sure he was getting frustrated though. Hakkaku was determined not to back down however, it was just as frustrating standing by and letting this happen now knowing what they did. Not a lot of talking had happened in the passed week or two since this incident.

Kōga’s rebuttal stuck to Hakkaku only briefly before he shook his head. That sounded to him like Kōga might be scared. Saying that out loud was sure to get Hakkaku hit though. Kōga wasn’t overtly violent, not in recent days anyways.

“Why do you say that?” Hakkaku interrogated, his frown deepening. “You didn’t talk to Sachiko about what she wanted. I don’t think any of us did…”

It was quiet again for a few beats after Hakkaku pointed that out. Several times he and Ginta had tried to get Sachiko to open up to them but the topic of what she might have wanted had never cropped up. Hakkaku shook the feeling of guilt away for the moment.

Shifting a moment or two, Hakkaku glanced at Ginta. They didn’t know when Kagome would be back from her country and would take Sachiko away. It could be hours or it could be days but if that was the case then they’d never find out what Sachiko might think about all of this.

Balthos was a strong horse no doubt growing that way from the work he did. Ilana was grateful he wasn't the flighty type however. If he was skittish with the saddlebag, she would have spoken less with Garret and focused more on the horse.

The information Garret parted with at least gave her an idea of what they were doing. A weeks worth of walking sounded like quite a bit however. She did a lot of walking in her time but never throughout the entire day nor for a week straight.

"It sounds like a long way," she commented out loud, "I hope I can get used to it in time."

She didn't expect him to understand those words. Not here and now at least. In time, she would part with more elaborate information regarding her home if she needed to.

"Your friend sounds as if he's the flighty type," she brought up instead, "That must be a lot of moving for him to jump from place to place every few years."

Ilana knew it must have been easier in this era though. She was well aware that if someone wanted to simply disappear, it was entirely possible. Lack of technology and keeping a census could ensure just about anyone disappearing easily. Most would probably just come to the conclusion that a person was dead.

Kōga wasn't sure of how to react to all of this sudden insistence. Neither Hakkaku nor Ginta were this adamant this often. They normally stuck with what Kōga thought was best and nothing more.

Now that they were more or less saying his thoughts were wrong, Kōga found himself caught off guard. He blinked at the two, feeling a muddle of confused emotions run through him.

"We did try to talk to her," Ginta pointed out. "But really, returning her to her country was your idea Kōga. Maybe she didn't want to do that at all."

Kōga paused, thinking in through. He had jumped on the idea of returning her home. At that time, nothing so drastic had happened however. She was just a strange girl from a strange country.

Kōga glanced at his two friend, uncertain for a long moment. He was well aware of what they were suggesting.

"So what? You think we should go back and ask her?" he guessed after a moment.

The pair looked dumbfounded as if that was the obvious choice. Kōga heaved a heavy sigh, ruffling his own hair in frustration. Was this really the right choice to make.

"Alright, okay!?" he finally said, "We'll go back, see what she wants."

Garret hummed in answer, if only to show he was listening. He made quick work of double-checking that everything was in its proper place and not too tight or heavy on Balthos. Only then did he reach out to take the reigns from Ilana to lead the way. The city’s gates were just yards ahead of them from this stable and once they were out on the dirt paths Ilana would have less to worry about in terms of people finding out about her odd hair.

“He takes only what he holds dearest to him or needs,” Garret further explained. Usually what that entailed were his equipment and weaponry as well as any supplies he’d need to travel and live in the next place he took residence in. Many were of abandoned houses, still yet to be owned by others.

Starting them off at an even pace Garret did not bother to glance around at those that passed them by. He did make sure to check if Ilana was keeping up easily enough, Balthos’s hooves mixed with their footsteps this time around.

“We will walk a few hours before we rest,” he told her. At least they would so long as nothing held them up or something unexpected came up along the way.

Ilana seemed to be able to keep up easily enough though Garret would keep an eye on her. Perhaps over the day she might slow and he’d have to make arrangements to accommodate as such. If Balthos wasn’t so loaded down with the saddle bags then he might have very well had her ride him as Garret walked.

Hakkaku and Ginta waited for Kōga’s answer. He didn’t seem like he knew what to say or do now that they were arguing against him. Usually Kōga’s decisions were final as he was their leader but this time it just felt wrong to, like a bigger mistake was being made by just letting him walk away from all this without talking to Sachiko.

Eventually Kōga turned to them both, repeating what was obvious to at least Hakkaku. It might’ve been the same for Ginta since he didn’t say anything right away either. Instead the two of them stared at Kōga.

Hakkaku couldn’t help but to smile a little when Kōga finally relented to head back and talk to Sachiko. Sure, it might cause a ruckus with InuYasha but it would be for the best; Hakkaku couldn’t shake that feeling.

They dutifully followed after Kōga, noting briefly hoe he was walking a little faster now than he was before. Still, he wasn’t running ahead but Hakkaku figured it would be best to figure things out one thing at a time. Kōga acting like this with Sachiko was a curious thing as it was when the guy was so sure of what he wanted before in his life.

When the horse was loaded up and secure, they started walking. The sound of hooves hitting the ground was a rather comforting one. She liked to listen to it, filling whatever silence remained.

Garret's words were simple enough. Whoever this friend of his was, it seemed like he'd done this moving plenty of times. She wondered why someone would need to move so much. Ilana didn't ask however.

"I see," she replied, "I suppose that would be easy to do. That's not so simple back home."

There was a big difference in such little things that it amazed her. Knowing what she did about the future to come, this was still a little overwhelming. It all left her mind whirling at times.

"I think I can manage that," she answered him after a moment, "If not, I'll say something."

Ilana was aware that her limbs would start complaining from the constant walking for a while. She wasn't accustom to walking long distances without rest. The one time she did, she swore she'd never make an attempt again. Of course, cars were moving passed her at the time as well.

Kōga retraced their steps, taking in the scent of the air. The group might have moved but they were still close enough. Finding Sachiko again would be easy enough. Despite this, Kōga wasn't sure what to say to her when they did catch up to the group.

Naturally, there was confusion when Kōga stopped them once again. He motioned for Sachiko to follow after. They would talk in private for the time being.

Turning a corner, Kōga heaved a heavy sigh. He shifted his weight awkwardly, trying to find the right words. Eventually, he crossed his arms over his chest, trying to clear his thoughts.

"So I...we came to the conclusion that I was...making decisions for you," he finally said, "And because of that, these two pestered me into turning back..."

Kōga paused nervously, ignoring the confident looks his friend shot him. He cleared his throat, feeling odd. Normally, he was the confident type. Now, he just felt uncertain.

"So...I want to know. What do you want?" he asked, "Do you want to go back to your country? Or do you want to stay here? I want to know. We want you to tell us."

If she was happier here, maybe it was better that she didn't leave at all. Kōga knew that he hadn't really gotten into her head when it came to her needs. He might have been ignoring them all along. For that, he felt a little bad.

Ilana eventually commented again about her home life before she’d arrived here. The Piece of Eden that she’d toted with her was stuffed in the pack still slung over Garret’s shoulder. It was another of her off hand comments that left Garret with little to imagine about what she might’ve meant.

He didn’t comment on it for now. Perhaps when they were on the road it would come up again.

When the topic was broached about their travel time and when Garret expected to break for a lunchtime meal, Garret nodded again at her answer. Ilana was quick to prove that she didn’t overestimate herself, a fact that Garret appreciated. He couldn’t very well keep an eye on her from herself all the time.

“If you would that would be appreciated,” he noted simply.

With that out of the way Garret fell silent. Perhaps Ilana would like the time to think or to observe her surroundings now that they were passing the city’s gate. If that was the case then she would have plenty of time to do that on their trip to Darren’s. He didn’t mention that however.

Balthos was at least moving along with them easily enough. There was little to startle him and make him antsy and Garret hoped that would remain to be the case. There were many things more Garret preferred than to deal with a stubborn horse that acted up.

They walked awhile, InuYasha and Shippō often bickering while Sango and Miroku tried to keep the peace. Occasionally questions were asked of Sachiko though they were simple things, ones that Sachiko could answer or dismiss easily. All the same she didn’t feel very friendly with these people, aware that it was all a little awkward with her tagging along and waiting for this Kagome.

That awkwardness only doubled upon Kōga’s return, Ginta and Hakkaku trailing along behind him and looking a little confident about something. It seemed like why they were here would be left to the later two to explain to InuYasha and the others as Kōga led Sachiko away.

Curious, Sachiko followed after, attempting to ignore the nagging questions and the lingering awkwardness. The way Kōga seemed sheepish was enough to make her wait him out patiently. It surprisingly didn’t take him long once he’d stopped, shuffling from foot to foot for a second.

Sachiko blinked, grasping her elbow in her hand as she listened. It was the first time she’d really been asked her opinion on this matter after all. For a second or two she debated on explaining it all or being simpler on the matter. Eventually she sighed, steeling her nerves and opting for the simpler answer. Explanations could be given later, if things weren’t so awkward.

“Honestly? There’s lots of things I miss but… not enough that I want to go back,” she admitted.

Whatever happened next, Sachiko couldn’t be sure. It was strange enough that Kōga, Ginta and Hakkaku had come back just to ask her this as it was.

There wasn't much to say after that. At least, Ilana didn't think so. She focused on the sound of Balthos hooves hitting the cobblestoned roads. There was a little chatter about as people woke for the day. They wouldn't be sticking around long enough to hear the news that floated about however.

She once again wondered about Garret and his strange doings. His friend picked up and moved quite a bit as well. Part of her wondered if there was more of a reason for that.

Ilana didn't ask however. Maybe this wasn't the time or place. Every time she did try to pry, his answers were guarded. She wondered if it was best not to bring up that sort of thing.

She shook it from her thoughts, instead focusing on the area around them. The townsfolk passed by. Eventually, they left the town, coming to the gate that would bring many others in.

From there, they followed a simple path. It was almost strange to see so many trees and foliage rather than paved roads or cars. There was almost a peaceful sense about it.

"Everything's so different," she brought up at one point, "I wonder if I'll ever get used to it..."

Kōga waited quietly for her to say something. On occasion, he would shift awkwardly. He wasn't good at waiting things like this out. Whatever she had to say, she obviously was putting some amount of thought into it.

When she did answer, Kōga felt surprise run through him. She didn't want to return to her country. He figured anyone in her situation might want to.

Kōga rubbed the back of his head, fingers meeting his hair. If he had asked from the start, none of this would have happened. He wouldn't have had to track down InuYasha's group.

"I...didn't know," he finally said, "I should have asked..."

"If we'd all asked in the beginning, you wouldn't have had to," Ginta added, a guilty expression overtaking his features, "We're sorry Sachiko...

Kōga sighed. He really had gotten them all in a bind. It took as simple as asking to fix all of these problems. Of only he had done that sooner.

"So what do you say?" he inquired, "If you don't want to return to your country, what do you want to do?"

They didn’t get far outside of the city and into the actual wilderness before Ilana was commenting on their surroundings. No one was around them on this dirt path, leaving them to listen to the sounds of leaves rustling in the wind or wild birds. This seemed enough to catch Ilana’s attention, as this was what she commented on.

Confusion welled up in Garret at the comment. This was normal in this place so what was normal for Ilana? In a way, Garret was almost afraid to ask. It certainly would be hard to wrap his mind around anything other than this in this part of the world that he’d seen.

“Is that right?” he wondered. “I am sure that in time you will.”

That’s all it would be, time. She’d soon learn what would draw attention to her given her odd situation and how to avoid that attention. Likewise seeing such things, while she might enjoy them, would become the usual for her on their travels. At least, it would, assuming she remained at his side. Garret couldn’t be sure what Ilana would do once she found out about the brotherhood.

In time he would find out. With that reminder to himself Garret pushed that thought out of his mind for the time being.

“At least you sound like you enjoy this change,” Garret pointed out. Balthos snorted as if in response himself.

Hakkaku and Ginta remained dutifully behind Kōga as Sachiko brooded on her answer. Occasionally she spotted Kōga shuffling in the silence that stretched out after his question. Eventually she did answer though, relieving the three of their curiosity on the matter.

”Yeah, we should have made time to see what you though,” Hakkaku agreed after the other two.

Sachiko blinked at the three, a little surprised about that. Silently, she shook her head unable to bring herself to speak up again just yet. She was at fault as well about all of this but Kōga had been so adamant about getting her home that she felt like she shouldn’t. Maybe if she had all of this could have been avoided.

The next question wasn’t so surprising though it still left her quiet for a minute or two. It wasn’t like she had a home here either or anybody else to go to. Maybe the thought that crossed her mind was an obvious one but would they want her tagging along with them?

“If it wouldn’t be too much of a bother, would it be all right if I continued to travel with you three?” she finally asked.

They were familiar to her, after all. Despite whatever weirdness she caused it seemed to be a rare thing. Since the boar demon that had confronted them nothing else had happened, or if it had then she and the others hadn’t even noticed. Whatever she was doing it was human but it wasn’t like she was some demon either.

She shook the thought away as Hakkaku and Ginta seemed to perk up at her question. It was clear that the two supported that idea though both waited, glancing at Kōga for his answer.

Ilana could hear a lot of birds singing in the trees. There were some songs she didn't recognize. It wasn't for lack of trying. For all she knew, there were so many that the songs were mixed together.

She blinked at Garret when he finally did speak. He seemed surprised by her words though, why wouldn't he be? He didn't know the future to come.

"Not all change is good, at least not back home," she finally replied, "So yea, I'd rather see this era than the one I'm from."

There were some things she didn't agree with when it came to her country and it's attitude to cutting down trees. She was by no means an extremist. That didn't mean she liked the idea of deforestation either.

"There are things I'll miss though. There's a lot of things that I've grown used to. It'll be hard to break old habits and wants," she finally plowed on.

Ilana was aware there was little she could do about it. For now, she could only try to stay on the side of optimism.

Kōga waited quietly for her to speak up again. She took her time as if she was brooding over it carefully. Whatever she wanted, he could at least try to give her. It was just a matter of speaking up about it.

When she asked to continue on traveling with them, he wasn't so surprised. A part of him expected that answer, after all. If she didn't want to return to her country, she didn't have much else left.

"I don't mind it," he replied, "What about you guys?

He saw Ginta shake his head in response. A smile had stretched over his lips. The both of them looked rather pleased with the outcome.

"Of course we want you to come with us!" Ginta replied, Things wouldn't feel right if you didn't.

Kōga had to agree a little bit with that statement. Now that things had more or less changed for them and they'd grown closer, there would be a hole in their group without her. He didn't admit it out loud but he did feel that it was true.

"If you really want to stay, we'll have to figure out a few things," he brought up after the agreement, "A change of clothes, a weapon even. We need to make sure you can defend yourself in some manner if one of us can't help you."

Garret was not surprised by her answer. He was well aware that many things were not good even if they did endorse a change or came about because of it. The Templars wanted a change for the worse, after all. This he kept to himself for the time being however.

“I see,” he murmured. He wasn’t sure what else to say to her now.

It was a little odd to hear how she might like to remain here, away from her own time. Already Ilana was expressing her feelings about things she no longer had and people she couldn’t see anymore but wouldn’t that have been enough to want to go back? He shook his head. Perhaps it was best if he did not voice his thought on the matter. It wasn’t like the Piece of Eden, hidden away in his pack, had sent her back when she’d touched it again.

No, speaking up on that matter might make her a touch sensitive. Garret would rather avoid that when their acquaintanceship was still so new.

“Perhaps you’ll find something new to replace such things,” Garret offered instead.

At the very least it would be true. Overtime she might learn new habits and pick up hobbies to replace ones that were no longer accessible to her. It was all a matter of time and letting her experience what she could when they could.

”It’ll be great to have you with us,” Hakkaku agreed, nodding along with Ginta.

It looked like the two of them couldn’t wipe the smiles from their faces. Their words and enthusiasm were enough to draw a smile from Sachiko though it was a shier one than theirs. It felt nice to be so wanted and to be included in their group after so many weeks of traveling with them. It left her with a warm feeling.

When Kōga spoke up again, mentioning things that needed tending to, it did little to stop her from smiling. Instead she rocked from side to side as she waited for him to finish. It was a lot to think about but it was all basic things too. It was really just a matter of finding the time and means to see to them.

She nodded in agreement. Her own clothes were dirty, the shirt torn from when she’d needed a rag to clean Kōga’s burns. It’d be nice to get into a fresh change of clothes, even if they weren’t ones she was familiar with.

“That’s reasonable,” she agreed. A moment of hesitation passed before she decided to voice her next thought. “If it’s possible, I want to try to figure out what I did that day, with that other demon, too.”

It hadn’t been something they’d talked about at all. It had happened and that was that, there had been other things to worry about at the time. It had almost gotten forgotten in all of it.

Sachiko shook her head, as if to chase away the thoughts. Only then did she glance over her shoulder to where InuYasha and his friends remained, perhaps still curious about why Kōga had come back to talk to Sachiko. “What do we tell them?”

For the most part, the conversation was simply enough. Ilana tried not to focus on anything that might bring her down. Family and friends would come to mind. She couldn't shake them when they entered. Ilana didn't want to break down if she could help it.

She hummed a little in response to his simple words. There wasn't much more to say. She found he was the blunt sort and his words were normally short. She wondered if the man would become more talkative in time.

Ilana shrugged her shoulders in response to his next words. They were simple ones. It was hard for Ilana to say if that would be the case or not. After all, technology was far greater then than it was now.

"Maybe," she answered, "It's hard to say."

She did want to return home and fought the urge to think about it. Despite that, she knew it was a risk to even touch that thing again. It could pull her into another time all together. Up to his point, she'd been lucky enough.

"I'm just trying to remain optimistic," she finally said, "Which can be harder than I expected."

Things were starting to get hashed out slowly. Sachiko didn't seem too bothered by any of this. In fact, she seemed to agree rather easily. Kōga didn't quite mind that. By all means, if she wanted to stay, she could and would.

What she had to say next caught him off guard a little. He rubbed his jaw, a little unsure of how to respond to that. Whatever she had done to that demon beforehand was still a large mystery to them.

"I don't really know what that was..." Kōga mentioned, "If we can figure out what it might have been, maybe you can look into it deeper."

Kōga couldn't quite say. He'd never encountered something like that before. She really was a strange woman, having surprised him over and over again.

"You know, there are witches around," Ginta pointed out, "Maybe talking to them could open some doors for you?"

Kōga hummed in thought at that. It was really their only lead. Sachiko needed some answers on that and soon, no doubt. She probably wanted to know what was going on herself.

"We'll keep it in mind then," he replied, "If Sachiko is alright with that."

He would do his best include her thoughts before making a decision. If she didn't like something, he wouldn't go along with it. That seemed to be for her best intentions, after all.

Ilana didn’t take long to admit that she was just trying to look on the brighter side of things. He had to admit that it was a little admirable that she was doing that much at least. It would have been a very easy thing for her to begin growing depressed because of her losses and the way that she had no idea what to expect next.

“Do not worry, in time you will find things to keep you busy,” Garret assured her. At the very least Balthos would be a handful alone.

Being busy would give her little time to brood about such things in any case. Perhaps that was all she needed. It was still hard to say after only a few days had passed. During their travels he could more freely learn about her however.

“Perhaps you might like to pass some time just talking?” he offered.

While he led Balthos Ilana had nothing to occupy herself with otherwise. Perhaps he should have asked what she might like to do or knew how to do before they set out. For now he’d have to just try to wing it a little and see what stuck. ’Surely it can’t be too difficult,’ he assured himself.

All he could really do was wait for Ilana to agree or not. Perhaps she might suggest something else or just grow quiet.

When she’d brought up that strange incident it was made apparent that the three also hadn’t a clue as to what she’d done. Even still Ginta provided an option to explore later on, provided they could find one of these witches. Sachiko blinked at Kōga as he spoke up. It seemed her opinion on the matter was important.

“I don’t mind. If it helps figure out what happened then,” she said. Silently she added, ’Assuming we can find any who’ll help.’

At the very least they had a goal in mind now. If whatever happened was some kind of power that Sachiko could harness then maybe she wouldn’t be so weak if they ran into more demons. Really, she’d be surprised if they didn’t run into some other kind of threat. This time seemed to thrive on it to an extent.

”Maybe we should worry about that after everything else though,” Hakkaku pointed out. “Just in case it takes a long time to find one.”

Sachiko nodded. The very idea of a fresh change of clothes was enticing alone after all. She missed hot baths however though wouldn’t mention that. Maybe she’d just risk trying to clean off in a river or something, provided it was clean enough to.

Ilana walked nearby, keeping up with Garret well enough so far. Of course, they'd only just started out. Within an hour or so, she'd start to feel it in her legs and knee.s She wasn't too excited for that to happen just yet.

She nodded though knew it was something easy to say. Ilana knew it would take a while to come to terms with it all. She was trying to take it in strides at the given moment.

"That might be for the best either way," she commented easily afterward.

Too much time on her own meant too much time thinking. If she didn't keep busy somehow, she'd break down. For a time, she wanted to avoid that. As irrational as it was, she still had trouble simply crying in front of others.

The suggestion of simply talking came up. She spared him a glance, unsure of where to start with that. It wasn't as if she could provide many topics of her own time.

"I'm afraid I don't know what to talk about..." she replied after a long moment, "I suppose...I really don't know much about the area? Is there anything I should be looking out for?"

Kōga nodded in response to her answer. At least they had a plan for later on. She needed to figure out what had happened anyways. He was at a loss for answers to that as were his friends.

"Then that's what we'll do," he told her.

Of course, Hakkaku suggested that particular bit to be tended to later. Kōga couldn't help but agree. They needed a change of clothing for her first. She couldn't walk around like she was now.

"We'll have to figure something out for some clothing," he replied.

"Well...you know...she's kind of a part of the pack now, and all..." Ginta pointed out. It didn't take long for Kōga to guess what he was suggesting.

He rubbed the back of his neck, glancing back at Sachiko. Would she really be alright wearing furs of their fallen brothers? Kōga couldn't quite say himself. Maybe it was best to test the waters on that one.

"What he means is when our brothers die, we wear their fur to honor them," he explained, "If you're not alright with that, we can always find something else."

Though Ilana didn’t seem averse to holding a conversation she was quick to mention that she had no idea what to do about a topic. It was easy to see that he had yet to really open up. In a way that wasn’t too surprising. Eventually she did ask about the area itself however, giving garret something to reply to.

He thought about it for a moment. The immediate area wasn’t often a dangerous one. It wouldn’t be until much later in their travels, further into the wilds of the frontier, would any real danger be expected. Still, having Ilana informed might be for the best either way.

“While not too common a sight, there are bears and wild cats that can be found and should be avoided,” Garret mentioned after a while. Once again Balthos seemed to try to interrupt him by whining briefly, tossing his mane. Garret ignored him and carried on. “They shouldn’t be around in the route that we’re taking however.”

A moment later, Garret glanced over his shoulder to glimpse Ilana’s expression. She looked a little wary at the mention of the dangerous wildlife. ’As one should be,’ Garret reasoned. Taking animals lightly could easily lead to one’s downfall after all.

“I would not worry about it. We will be keeping a wide berth of such things,” he assured her.

If InuYasha and his friends were getting impatient to find out why Kōga had come back to speak to Sachiko they hadn’t come to express it yet. Perhaps Sango or Miroku—the two calmer ones of their group thus far—were keeping InuYasha and Shippō in line. Sachiko couldn’t say for sure though eventually someone would have to go and explain what was happening and that Sachiko wouldn’t be needing Kagome’s help after all.

For the time being that didn’t seem to be important however. Besides, Ginta’s comment caught her attention, distracting her.

She blinked, a little surprised at the inclusion. She wouldn’t have thought she was that important to them to be so included that she was part of their pack. That warm feeling returned, a feeling of belonging joining it. All the same it didn’t do much to explain what Ginta was getting at.

Her attention turned to Kōga when he started explaining. It was a simple answer though it was enough. It at least explained why the three wore such similar outfits.

“No, that’s fine,” Sachiko answered with a shake of her head. It would be a little weird wearing real furs but she’d manage. “I’d be honored to.”

Hakkaku and Ginta seemed to get happier about her answer though she couldn’t be sure about Kōga. He seemed a little reserved since he’d come back, a little more so than usual given what had happened over the past few days. A little part of her kind of hoped he’d wanted her to stay too.

”Well, that’s one problem solved then!” Hakkaku said with a smile.

If he understood why she didn't have much to talk about, he didn't say it right away. Ilana could only do and say so much when he was so guarded. Why he was like this, she could only really assume.

Eventually, he answered her question, mentioning the wildlife around her. She cleared her throat nervously, glancing around the area briefly. She knew better however. If there was trouble, the horse would hear it first.

"I've seen a bear once," she pointed out, "Thankfully it was rather far away. They normally didn't come into town but they were becoming more common back home."

Ordinarily, they wouldn't wander into such places. Now, they wandered in, picking through garbage. The wildlife changing so much startled quite a few residence.

"It made for a good story afterward though," she carried on, "Wouldn't want to meet a bear face to face however..."

Sachiko looked surprised by his words. It was only a momentary thing however. She seemed alright with the idea of wearing the furs of their fallen brothers. Kōga nodded in approval, sparing a small smile.

"Then that's what we'll do," he told her, "Should you tell the others or not? I'm sure they're waiting."

If anything, Kōga could just rudely speak up and take Sachiko with them. That would put hostilities back where they normally were. He didn't want to upset Sachiko if she was offended by such things, however.

"It might be better if we smooth things over," Ginta replied, "InuYasha's probably annoyed..."

Kōga waved off those words easily. He didn't have much reason to think highly of InuYasha or his annoyance at the time. If he was annoyed, that was his problem. So, instead, he turned to the group in the distance.

"Sachiko decided to stay with us!" he shouted out. He turned, barely sparing a wave, "See you later!"

With that, he and his small band would follow after. He laughed a little as his friends scowled him for his rudeness. If they expected anything else, they were far mistaken.

It took a second or two but eventually Ilana answered him. While she didn’t sound enthused about meeting a bear or wild cat face-to-face she did seem to have caught a glimpse of one in her life. What led to that sighting Garret couldn’t say though whatever had led to it had left an impression on her. He hummed briefly, a habit he took to many days.

“Is that right?” he replied. He couldn’t say what sort of place she lived in before but it didn’t seem like bears were a common sighting there. “If we take care we won’t be meeting any bears personally.”

He joked a little when he made that last comment though to those who didn’t know him personally for long it might have sounded rather dry. If Ilana wasn’t aware of the humor, that didn’t matter to him much. In any case, it was a response that would keep the conversation going.

Garret paused for a moment as Balthos tugged on the reigns. He glanced back to see the horse attempting to wander off the dirt pathway, tossing his mane briefly. Garret tsked, tugging lightly to reaffirm their pathway. Though Balthos didn’t respond right away he did eventually right himself and follow after properly though he noticeably did not look happy about it.

Only when they were moving again did Garret say anything more. “For the most part you will glimpse deer or rabbits.”

She couldn’t be for sure but Sachiko liked to think that Kōga was happy about the choice she made. At the very least he was smiling and nodding at her. Perhaps he really did want her around, what with his approval of her wearing his own tribe’s garb. In a way, that thought made all the previous awkwardness that had lingered lessen a bit.

“Ah?” Sachiko blinked, her thoughts chased away for the time being. She glanced back to where InuYasha and his friends were before she answered. “I don’t see why not.”

Ginta seemed to agree to that, remarking about InuYasha’s irritability. It didn’t seem like this was the best idea to Kōga, or maybe he just wanted to pick at InuYasha somehow. She’d heard a few stories about the two arguing from Ginta and Hakkaku while trying to find them. Either way Kōga had cupped his hands around his mouth and shouted to the group before turning and jogging off.

”H-Hey! Kōga, wait up!” Hakkaku cried, starting after him.

Sachiko had enough time to realize what had happened before hurrying after, easily catching up with Hakkaku and Ginta at least. Kōga had quite the head start and was quick on his feat though he wasn’t moving anywhere nearly as quickly as he had with that boar demon so many days ago. Sachiko wondered just how fast Kōga could run, especially so since Hakkaku had once mentioned that Kōga usually just ran ahead of he and Ginta most days only to find them later.

Up ahead she could hear Kōga laughing. It was a light sound, one that left Sachiko feeling a little lighter too. Behind them Sachiko could swear she heard InuYasha’s voice yelling something about rude, scrawny wolves but couldn’t be sure about it.

“Kōga!” she called ahead, already feeling like she didn’t have enough air in her lungs. “I am not a runner!”

Ilana nodded in response to his question. She recalled seeing it rummaging through trash cans. She'd seen quite a few things in her town however. Deer ran around mostly.

"It ripped off some stuff from a low roof," she explained, "The home owners weren't to pleased."

If anything, they would be wary of meeting dangerous wildlife if they could help it. Ilana was a panicky type. She would rather ran than fight. Due to that, she wasn't very reliable.

"I don't mind deer," she replied, watching Balthos briefly. She made sure to keep an eye on his ears. He'd hear trouble first before they did, "I'd rather them than anything else."

With that, she fell silent again. At a loss of what else to say, she merely took in the sights. The area really was pretty. The world looked so untouched, it was a little amazing.

"I take it you hunt out here?" she inquired after a moment. Most frontiersmen did. They made quite a profit on skins much less needed to feed themselves.

Kōga couldn't help but laugh a little as they went. He felt lighter now that everything had been put to rest. At least now, things could be placed behind him. He didn't worry so much now.

When they were a distance away, he slowed his pace. He glanced back at Sachiko. She was out of breath, trying to catch it. Kōga shook his head, a grin tugging at his lips.

"You're going to have to get used to it," he pointed out, "You'll have to learn how to run with us!"

It was true enough. They were used to moving quickly when they needed to. In time, Sachiko would be used to that. She was merely human, he was well aware. In time, she'd learn how to move along with them.

"Come one, Kōga. Take it easy on her," Ginta urged.

Kōga finally gave a nod in agreement. He wasn't about to make her run a marathon. They'd just have to take it in strides, really. Sachiko would get a hang of it in time.

"Alright, alright," he said, "We'll walk a while. Don't worry about it, Sachiko! You'll get it eventually!"

Garret chuckled a little when Ilana admitted to liking the idea of seeing deer over bears on their travels. She wouldn’t be disappointed, as Garret would probably hunt a time or two after they set up camp. Skins could be kept to sell and the meet could be used for their own meals.

“That I do,” he answered. “It is an easy way to get paid as well as keep oneself fed.”

That and it let him hone his skill with firearms. Using them against Templar targets was too noisy and drew attention quickly. Garret liked to avoid that when he could while he tracked them into towns and cities. Out in the wilderness was another matter entirely…

“How do you feel about a bit of hunting?” he wondered after a moment.

Ilana hadn’t said anything against it but she didn’t seem inclined to try it herself. Perhaps she had no interest in it or could not stomach the idea of hurting an animal herself. If that was the case then Garret would not force her but if she showed an interest it would give him something to teach her along the way. It was an idea at least.

He waited for her answer then, making sure that she was keeping up and that Balthos was not trying to wander off the path again. He had that habit, spotting something he wanted to munch on—whether it be grass or just weeds—and then would try to get to it. It sometimes left Garret having to spend minutes at a time coercing the horse to follow once more.

It didn’t take long for Kōga to laugh again before he slowed. They hadn’t run far but it sure as hell felt like it to Sachiko. She wasn’t an active woman, the most she had done in recent months was whatever her part-time job had her do otherwise she remained home mostly, absorbed in video games or on the computer. It seemed like now she’d have to get into shape just to keep up.

Kōga was poking fun at her but at least Ginta and Hakkaku were defending her. Perhaps they knew how she felt, being left behind so often and trying to catch up. Whatever kept Kōga from just darting ahead and doing his own thing, Sachiko couldn’t say. Perhaps it was her being there and being rather defenseless that did it.

”Humans can’t run as long as most demons can after all,” Hakkaku pointed out after Ginta.

This seemed to be enough to get Kōga to concede though he still teased and taunted her a little. Sachiko heaved a heavy breath, trying to compose herself now that they were walking again. Her legs burned alongside her lungs and she hoped it wouldn’t be long before that disappeared.

“You’re one to talk! I heard all about how you run ahead like the Flash and leave Ginta and Hakkaku behind all the time!” Sachiko accused though it lacked any bite to it. She was too busy trying to catch her breath for that to happen.

Hakkaku rubbed the back of his neck, chuckling a little nervously.”Ah, its not so bad. Usually we stay out of trouble that way…”

She glanced back at him when he chuckled. That seemed like a rare sound honestly. Ilana was glad that he was capable of such things however. That was nice to know.

"I could imagine that would be the case," she replied after a moment.

He asked her about hunting herself. Ilana shook her head in response. She had tried it when she was younger and had no interest. When her brother brought a deer home, she'd gagged and rushed off. She had no taste for such things.

"I've no particular interest in hunting myself," she answered him, "I've tried when I was younger but it's not something I have much taste in."

For the most part, she simply hated waking up early and simply waiting. She grew too antsy to do that. Ilana felt better when she was moving about. Hunting required a patience that she didn't have.

Kōga waved off the words easily. He knew very well what humans were and weren't capable of. They would simply have to buffer for her for a short time. With time came experience. She'd get a handle on it sooner or later.

"She'll get used to it in time," he said simply, "We'll walk a while now."

If anything, that could give her time to catch her breath. Running was something of an enjoyment to him. He hoped it would be the same for her with a little time. She just needed to get used to it.

"They don't mind!" Kōga argued back with a little bump in his tone, "They're just used to it!"

"Come on Kōga! We don't enjoy getting left behind!" Ginta argued back, "One day, you're going to be too hasty and get hurt!"

Kōga shook his head in response. He didn't mind the idea of rushing in once in a while. That made things fun, after all. If he couldn't have it that way, what other way could he go about fighting?

"I'm just having some fun," he pointed out after a moment, in a teasing manner "Come on, don't ruin it for me!"

When Garret offered to teach and take Ilana hunting she didn’t wait long to deny the request. Something told him she’d do just that but he’d figured it wouldn’t hurt to ask. It was all he really could do for the moment until he knew her better. Perhaps she realized this as well.

“Then I won’t entertain the idea any further,” he promised. “Though I’ve little other expertise to share out in the wilds like this.”

At the very least that comment would let her know what to expect, if only a little, from him out here. He was a no nonsense man an would focus on getting them from point A to point B as effectively as possible. Still, he’d need to take care of Ilana’s needs as well, something he wasn’t sure what to expect. She didn’t seem like the type to know how to survive out in the frontier like this much less to walk for miles on end in a day.

He shook the thoughts away. Now was not the time for them. Ilana had yet to complain though they hadn’t gotten far either. Garret wondered how long it’d be before she was asking for a quick break.

That thought too was pushed away. Instead he turned to glance at Ilana as he spoke again. “Perhaps you have something else we might speak of for the time being?”

Kōga didn’t seem at all fazed by Sachiko’s scolding him. In fact, he seemed to find it a little funny, even hand waving away the fact that he ran off ahead of his friends more times than not. Ginta and Hakkaku didn’t take it so lightly, arguing against Kōga’s statement. Sachiko wasn’t surprised to see it didn’t bother Kōga then either.

”Yeah! What are we supposed to do if you get hurt and we can’t find you?” Hakkaku pointed out.

Sachiko heaved a sigh, shaking her head. Her feet already hurt with all the walking they did, she couldn’t imagine running and jogging everywhere too. If Kōga started running at his fastest she had no hopes of keeping up much less knowing where he’d get off to. That thought worried her when she recalled what had happened with the fiery boar demon.

“If you like running off so much, why aren’t you now?” she wondered instead of arguing further. It seemed like a moot point anyways.

She spotted the way Hakkaku and Ginta glanced at each other though couldn’t be sure why they did. Everyone seemed happier, more relaxed now than when they’d dropped Sachiko off with that last group for a while. Why the change, she couldn’t say.

”It’s just because Sis is around now, isn’t it?” Hakkaku guessed.

“Sis?” echoed Sachiko, blinking between the three men.

Ilana nodded her head in response. Honestly, if she had any taste in the skill she would have picked up long ago. She lived in a rural area where hunting was widely accepted. It actually helped the area given deer could over populate.

"I fish, if that helps," she answered him, "Often catfish and small bass. My dad wanted to get me into fishing at night for larger catfish."

If anything at all, that was a little more along the lines of something normal here. She could find a few things in this time that she could make hobbies. Still, a pang ran through her realizing that she wouldn't see her father or mother again. She had memories and nothing more.

She blinked, broken out of her thoughts momentarily. Ilana spared him a quick smile. Another topic would have been nice even if she was at a loss as to what to talk about.

"Well, you haven't told me much of yourself yet," she pointed out, "What brought you out here, Garret?"

Ilana wasn't sure she would get a reply to that. In some way, she hoped that he would open up a little more. She really was curious. It would give her a fine distraction as well.

Kōga laughed a little in response to Hakkaku's concern. They were often double teaming him to get their point across. He saw nothing wrong with that. For now, he felt light and wanted it to last.

"Ah come on!" he replied, "Don't you have a little more faith in me than that?"

Of course he was merely teasing them. It was nice to know that he could do as such again. He had been feeling so weighty that it left him down. Kōga wasn't used to such things.

"Because that would leave you behind," he replied as if it was obvious, "And I don't want to do that."

Who knew what kind of danger might come about. If he wasn't close enough to defend his friends, he feared the worst. He didn't want to see her or his friend hurt.

"Don't lie. You just don't want to see sis hurt," Ginta pointed out after Hakkaku.

Kōga felt his cheeks warm a little as they said that. He knew what they were implying, having done the same with Kagome. It seemed the focus shifted on Sachiko now.

"So what?!" he defended, "I just don't want to see anyone getting hurt!"

He nodded when Ilana mentioned being able to fish. At least she knew something that would help get them food. If they ran by a river or lake then Garret would be sure to stop for as long as they could afford, to see what he could do. Perhaps it might be something she was looking forward to now.

“I am sure we can make a small side trip for a bit of fishing if we aren’t held up,” Garret noted out loud.

After that it had grown silent again, at least as silent as it got in the frontier. He could even hear Balthos’s hooves upon the dirt road. If the horse was stamping his hooves as he walked he was doing it loudly. Or maybe the dirt road was so packed down it was easy to hear the steps. Garret couldn’t say for sure and didn’t bother to glance at the horse to find out.

Ilana seemed to need a minute to respond to his next question though Garret didn’t wonder why. This seemed to be a common thing when he did as such.

“Hmmm,” was his only reply when she did finally ask her question. For a moment longer he was quiet. “Many things though I suppose I am allured by the call of the frontier.”

If that last half of his answer made no sense to her Garret wasn’t sure how he’d be able to explain it. It was just a feeling he had, enjoying the frontier over that of the cities being built.

Kōga’s answer as to why he wasn’t running ahead of them now was one that could be easily misinterpreted. In fact, Sachiko was aware that her heart skipped a beat at first in response to it. It was a feeling she quickly shoved away. It helped to do so when Ginta and Hakkaku were participating in the conversation.

Still, Sachiko glanced between them all. It sounded like something might have been said without actually saying it though Sachiko couldn’t say for sure. Maybe she’d just imagined it.

“But you’ve left Hakkaku and Ginta alone before, don’t you trust them to be strong enough?” Sachiko wondered. It was easier to ask that then to wonder what Kōga was getting agitated about. Surely just a few questions weren’t enough for that.

”Maybe Kōga’s getting overprotective,” chuckled Hakkaku. A moment later he was looking as if he was ready to flinch or duck away from a hit that may or may not come. This didn’t surprise Sachiko, having witnessed Kōga hit the two once or twice for implying stupid things.

Sachiko hummed thoughtfully. What had they done or talked about between leaving her with InuYasha’s group and coming back for her? It must have been something for this good mood to rise and for what was obviously something being implied. Sachiko didn’t want to think about what that thing was, though she wasn’t too sure why.

Ilana found relief in the fact taht he agreed to something as simple as fishing. If that was the case, she would have some kind of hobby to fall back onto. It would very much help them along the way as well.

"No rush," she answered, "I still have a lot to learn about it anyways."

She never had much of a taste for fish nor gutting them. If she had to learn, she would simply try to bare with it. That was the best thing she could do in the end.

He finally answered her, humming briefly beforehand. She found he did that quite a bit, as if he was in thought before he spoke. His answer was simple. She could see some appeal in it however.

"I suppose I can see why," she replied, "What about the native tribes? Have you come across any of them?"

She was well aware that some of those tribes weren't at all peaceful and for good reason. Still, she didn't want to meet any hostel people if she could help it.

Kōga rubbed the back of his neck, awkwardness overwhelming him. This wasn't something normal for him. In fact, he wasn't quite sure how to respond to all of this. He could take teasing but when it regarded things like this, he wasn't sure of what to say.

"W-well sure I do!" he responded, his words feeling rushed, "They're perfectly capable!"

It wasn't them he was so much worried about. Sure, between them all he was the strongest. Given who she was however, he knew that she would need to be looked after.

"I think you've backed him into a corner, sis," Ginta pointed out lightly, "That doesn't happen too often!"

"You guys aren't helping!" Kōga shouted back, his face feeling hot, "You guys are enjoying this way too much!"

He scratched his cheek, snorting slightly. Kōga couldn't quite complain in the end. He would rather things be light as they were now. Kōga found himself feeling a little warmer knowing that things had returned to normal, if not felt better.[/color]

Garret wondered just how good a fisher Ilana was. He was a better hunter than a fisher and wondered if Ilana would best him at the latter. If that was the case maybe it was a situation where he’d learn more from her than vice versa. He shook the thought aside. Like many things, he would find out in time.

“We will see what you know when the time comes,” Garret replied easily.

Another tug at the reins made sure that Balthos didn’t try to stray again. Doing this usually kept the horse going in one direction longer than if Garret didn’t. If Ilana worried about this method she hadn’t mentioned it, or maybe she hadn’t noticed him doing it.

“Hmm?” He glanced back at Ilana when she asked her next question. Curiosity was easy to see on her face. It was only when Garret turned back did he answer. “I have run across one. Usually I run into a group on a hunt rather then their tribe.”

Perhaps she worried about it, about whether or not they’d be hostile if they ran into any Indians. Garret would keep her safe. Perhaps she was worried due to not knowing his ability. At the very least that reasoning made sense to him.

“You need not worry, Ilana,” he said though did not elaborate as to why.

The more that Sachiko questioned Kōga the easier it was to see that he was growing flustered quickly. This was a strange thing to see, even after they almost kissed he hadn’t been like this. This only made her more curious as to what he was hiding or if there was even anything wrong. Ginta and Hakkaku didn’t seem to worry too much about it though.

She blinked at Ginta as he commented on the situation, sounding a little amused. A moment later she glanced over at Kōga again. Was he refusing to look back at the three of them for a reason?

“Ah? I didn’t meant to if I did,” Sachiko admitted, perhaps a little sheepishly.

Hakkaku was shaking his head before she even finished, a quiet chuckle escaping him. “Something tells me that Kōga won’t mind in the long run. Right, Kōga?”

Sachiko shook her head, perhaps a little amused at that comment. It was more than clear now that Ginta and Hakkaku were implying something and that it was enough to catch Kōga off guard. She wondered what it was before dismissing the thought. Maybe it was best if she didn’t know.

“Maybe we should just focus on getting to… wherever,” Sachiko offered. “I’d really like that change of clothes as soon as possible.”
